The DS420 began production in 1968, replacing the DR450 which had been based on the Majestic Major. Unlike its predecessor, it had no Daimler engineering, but was entirely a Jaguar product, utilising the 4.2 litre version of the Jaguar XK straight-six engine. The Queen Mother owned four of these DS240's over her lifetime. Production stopped in 1992.

The Daimler Motor car Company was founded in 1896 in Coventry, Warwickshire.

Joining the BSA (British Small Arms Group) in a merger in 1910 and aquired from the group by Jaguar in 1960. Jaguar retains the rights to use the Daimler brand and name but in 2007 agreed terms with the totally separate Daimler AG the company created when Daimler (Germany) and Chrysler split to share rights to the name.
