Dating from 1948, this was the first post war hearse owned by Ipswich Co-op. The vehicle is registered PV 8784 and is powered by a Daimler straight six engine. It remained in use until the early 1970s and was presented to the collection in 1972.
An engine rebuild and mechanical overhaul were started during 1990s but not finished
One of my real pleasures is my collection of drawings, and that of the Aldridge Transport Museum. Today, I wanted to see the details of the rear hub construction of the 1935 Daimler COG5. So a quick look at Birmingham CT's original boxes of contract drawings, and there's just what I want.
This is the cross-section through the wheel stud area, showing the wheels are located on the coned studs and nuts. Daimler not only used studs with backnuts, but also fitted dowels to stop any risk of their becoming loose.

One of the first Daimler to wear the famous fluted radiator, adapted in 1904, still to be seen on today's cars. The motif developed from the heavily finned water cooling tubes slung externally at the front of every car.
This car has a claimed top speed of 27mph

When the British Daimler Company took over BSA in 1939 they inherited two superb armoured vehicle designs. One was the famous Dingo scout car, which was already in production, the other this armoured car, which was still in the design stage. The two vehicles had a lot in common; they were of welded construction, without a chassis, had four-wheel drive and a Wilson pre-selector gearbox linked to a fluid flywheel. Indeed the armoured car was virtually a scaled up version of the scout car, with the addition of a turret.
Production ran to some 2,694 vehicles and this is an example of the Mark II version which had improved cooling and better escape facilities for the driver. In both versions there was a rear driver's position to enable the car to reverse quickly out of a tricky situation. The gearbox allowed the car to be driven easily in each direction.
Daimler armoured cars saw service in all theatres of war starting in 1941 and proved to be extremely popular. Our exhibit, like many others of this type, remained in service for some years after the war when new features such as the multi-barrel smoke grenade dischargers were fitted.
