garden diary - lemon cucumbers

I wonder if the telephone cord was inspired by these.

Cucumbers and tomatoes.

This is a short fruited Lebanese-type non hybrid cucumber. I got the seed from The Real Seed Company a couple of years ago. Sowed my last four seeds this spring but two seedlings developed stem rot and died. I have one plant in the greenhouse giving the 'Passandra's a run for their money. This one is outside where I'm trying to persuade it to ripen one fruit so I can harvest some more seeds. The RSC didn't have 'Mirella' in its seed listing this year and it's apparently quite difficult to persuade it to set seed. *Fingers crossed*

Lemon cucumbers as they eyes*

... with potatoes

Recipe (serves 2):

- 1 cucumber

- 1 small onion

- 2 tsp. flour

- 150 ml whipping cream

- 250 ml vegetable stock

- 2 - 3 tsp. mustard (preferably a wholegrain rotisseur mustard)

- 350 g fillet of salmon

- parsley

- lemon juice

- salt, pepper

- 1 tbs. vegetable oil

Preparation:

Peel, half and deseed the cucumber with a spoon. Cut into half rings of about 1 cm.

Dice onion finely.

Heat oil in a pan, sauté onions, then add cucumber rings and fry for about 2 mins.

Sprinkle the flour and fry shortly.

Add the whipping cream, vegetable stock and mustard, stir in very well and let stew at medium heat for about 8 mins.

Cut salmon - without skin - into 2.5 cm dices, add to the cucumbers and stew for further 7 to 8 mins.

Season with salt, pepper and lemon juice.

Add finely chopped parsley (dill is fine as an alternative) before serving.

This stew can be served with (jacket) potatoes, pasta or rice.

see if I can remember everything without my notes: green onions, garlic chives, garlic, red pepper flakes, fish sauce?

The cucumber toner is the second part of the system. To protect men’s natural oils, the toner actually works to hydrate skin with age-fighting antioxidant and soothing natural ingredients. The plant extracts contained in the toner leave skin feeling fresh without being over dried and should be used on a regular basis.

A sea cucumber's defense mechanism is extremely radical: it literally throws up its internal organs which, while it may distract any potential attackers, ultimately kills the animal. I don't quite understand it, but we witnessed the act after some fisherman tossed a sea cucumber onto the rocks.

As was told to me..."named after a farmer and a soldier. Has been maintained by the same family since after the war of 1812. Fruits are white, 8" and remain crisp for a long time. Plants are very productive and disease free.

By chance, I was gifted with one of these illegal (I'd imagine) cucumbers to try. The growers who gave these to EP - who then passed one off to me - apparently smuggled the seeds into the country from their village in China. Since it was my first encounter with this species, I was shocked at how sharp its tightly coiled tiny thorns were. Thankfully, I was advised to peel the skins off these cucumbers before consumption, else I would be lost what to do (that's when I was told it was a Chinese cucumber - it's lumpy appearance reminded me of bitter melon - this is far from it!). When I tried the peeled and chopped vegetable, I was shocked again to discover its incredibly cool crisp snap, the melon like sweetness and refreshing liquor that burst from each crunchy mouthful of the vegetable. Wow indeed.

Perhaps my senses were heightened because this was essentially an illegal "growth."

Not the first in my food loving history...

I've experimented to find the optimal size at which to pick these. Some of these are bound to have hard seeds in them, but I had to let them go to see how long they take to reach that stage. It's more an art than a science because some small ones have reached that stage as well.
