Cube houses are a set of innovative houses built in Rotterdam and Helmond in the Netherlands, designed by architect Piet Blom and based on the concept of "living as an urban roof": high density housing with sufficient space on the ground level, since its main purpose is to optimize the space inside. Blom tilted the cube of a conventional house 45 degrees, and rested it upon a hexagon-shaped pylon. His design represents a village within a city, where each house represents a tree, and all the houses together, a forest.

I built this transforming cube months ago, after I've seen the first pics of the black cubes from the Lego Movie. I didn't manage in this first trial to attach all the plates on the robot, one is the base. It works good but my first idea was an eight-faces transforming cube. Next time!!

Yup...my Rubik's Cube addiction continues. :)
Last week when I was making these Little Windows, I decided I would also create a photo Rubik's Cube using Fran's tutorial.
Let me tell you...this was a royal pain. And not because of the tutorial or anything, which was great btw. It's just working with resin and also super glue...can be quite messy.
First I had to find 6 images of the kids to use. Two of Jessie, two of Sydney and two of them together. Easy enough right? Well that's what I thought. But making sure that the picture crops to a square nicely and that their eyes fall within one of the squares instead of in between the squares can be challenging.
Next I had to cut each image into 9 semi even squares and also trim out the areas in between the squares (the black areas). I also opted to trim the corners of each square but I think I cut off to much. Not entirely happy with how it looks.
Adding the resin wasn't too bad, but when it gets on your hands, its sticky and it stinks. Had to wash my hands a few times to get rid of the smell.
Drying is only suppose to take about 16-24 hours, but after the first 24 hours, the pieces were still a tad sticky. I ended up waiting another two days before attaching them to the cube. Even then they were still sticky. Oh well. Hopefully that will go away with time.
I used Super Glue to attach the square pieces to the cube. A few times I got some on my fingers and the pieces stuck to my fingers. There are several pieces that have Super Glue fingerprints all over em. :)
All in all, it was a fun project. But I will never do this again. Too much work. :D Okay I'm off to play with the cube.

The houses in Rotterdam were designed in 1977 in a plan of 55, of which 39 were built.
The houses in Rotterdam are located on Overblaak Street, right above the Blaak Subway Station. There are 38 small cubes and two so called 'super-cubes', all attached to each other.
As residents are disturbed so often by curious passers-by, one owner decided to open a "show cube", which is furnished as a normal house, and is making a living out of offering tours to visitors.
The walls and windows are angled at 54.7 degrees. The total area of the apartment is around 100 square meters, but around a quarter of the space is unusable because of the walls that are under the angled ceilings.
In 2006, a museum of chess pieces was opened under the houses.
In 2009, the larger cubes were converted by Personal Architecture into a hostel run by Dutch hostel chain Stayokay."

This a serie of kusudama cube I designed for a friend of mine that gets married next week. The idea was making a basic module cube on which apply different decoration each decoration intended as a message related to the marriage.... more or less. An other aim was to use for the "message" the rest of the paper left when cutting two square from an A4 sheet.... more or less... I reached both ... many things have to be improved... but I'm quite happy with the result... the only problem is that I cannot stop now to create new decorations so you might see others in the weeks to come.
Each cube is made with six modules made with a 15x15 cm square of regular copy paper (don't ask me what the black copy paper is for, because I do not know)... the central decorations are made with the stripes of paper left. No cuts and no glue. The basic module for the cube is very very easy... I never saw it used before but any reference is welcome....
I've been calculated last week... I need 25 years more of working before I can retire... so for the next 25 years I cannot be precise about my timings in origami but.... be patient .... in a maximun of 26 years I promise I'll diagram it.... if you want to try and can't wait so long... just make a windmill base, flatten it into a square then sink inside two opposite corners. Now you have two flaps on one side and a double pocket and a flap on the other two. Insert the two flaps in the pocket: a flap in each pocket. The flap next to the the pocket stays free (see the picture)... assemble it as a cube. If you like, make any decoration and insert it in the cut before you assemble the cube. If you are in need to suffer... I suppose a stellated ichosaedron can be made but didn't have time to fold the 30 modules... let me know if you do....

Punched this one up a little from the original for the contest. Wanted to shorten the DoF a little and add a dramatic blur to the background.
I work as a Information Technology Tech, so I speed a large part of my day on the phone. Most of that time is boring implementation calls that drag on for hours on end. My little secret to keeping sane is my Rubiks Cube, photoshop...and flickr.
