Cube Housing

"Cube houses (Dutch: Kubuswoningen) are a set of innovative houses built in Rotterdam and Helmond in the Netherlands, designed by architect Piet Blom and based on the concept of "living as an urban roof": high density housing with sufficient space on the ground level. Blom tilted the cube of a conventional house 45 degrees, and rested it upon a hexagon-shaped pylon. His design represents a village within a city, where each house represents a tree, and all the houses together, a forest.
The houses in Rotterdam were designed in 1977 in a plan of 55, of which 39 were built.
The houses in Rotterdam are located on Overblaak Street, right above the Blaak Subway Station. There are 38 small cubes and two so called 'super-cubes', all attached to each other.
As residents are disturbed so often by curious passers-by, one owner decided to open a "show cube", which is furnished as a normal house, and is making a living out of offering tours to visitors.
The walls and windows are angled at 54.7 degrees. The total area of the apartment is around 100 square meters, but around a quarter of the space is unusable because of the walls that are under the angled ceilings.
In 2006, a museum of chess pieces was opened under the houses.
In 2009, the larger cubes were converted by Personal Architecture into a hostel run by Dutch hostel chain Stayokay."

This marvel of architecture is the creation of master Moses Safdie for the exposition Habitat 67 who took place during the World exposition in 1967 (called Expo 67).
A blank cube has a clock face appear, then changes to a clock face on all sides of it, then each clock face has changed into its own unique color.
Another shot of the Rotterdam Cube Houses. Here I've lined up the edges of the roofs just to make the image a bit more confusing than it already was.........

The central idea of the cube houses around the world is mainly optimizing the space, as a house, to a better distribution of the rooms inside."

Kubuswoningen, or cube houses, are a set of innovative houses built in Rotterdam and Helmond in The Netherlands, designed by architect Piet Blom in 1984. The houses in Rotterdam are located on Overblaak Street, and beside the Blaak Subway Station. Blom tilted the cube of a conventional house 45 degrees, and rested it upon a hexagon-shaped pylon. There are 38 small cubes and two so called 'super-cubes', all attached to each other.
As residents are disturbed so often by curious passers-by, one owner decided to open a "show cube", which is furnished as a normal house, and is making a living out of offering tours to visitors.
The houses contain three floors:
ground floor entrance; first floor with living room and open kitchen; second floor with two bedrooms and bathroom; top floor which is sometimes used as a small garden. The walls and windows are angled at 54.7 degrees. The total area of the apartment is around 100 square meters, but a quarter of the space is unusable because of the walls that are under the angled ceilings.

Cps: Jasmine Tea Cube, Opus ∞±1 (from a square) and Jasmine Tea Cube from a Circle
Units: Top Row = 1 square; Bottom Row = 1 circle
Paper: Coffee filter paper
I learned these pretty & useful cubes from oschene and Mélisande* at the OUSA Convention. The cube from a square has no creases on any side and both cubes have two layers of closure folds. These are fun to make and to get a cube from a circle is very interesting! Oschene gave out the square filter paper which was sturdy and folded nicely. For the "circle" cube, I used round filter paper that was very flimsy & soft so it was hard to fold, however, the cube stayed together when I steeped my tea! In the class, the "circle" cube we made out of kami was just as sturdy and with as sharp folds as the cube made out of a square.

I found that cube again, a few days later, in pieces.
Correction! It was an old cube that was thrown away -- not only did this one survive, but it was solved! And by these very hands. Here's proof.
Just a simple shot of the famous bunker of St Marguerite , in Normandy. This bunker was occupied by the germans during the Second World War.

My littlest Rubik's Cube (20mm across) sits on top of my oldest Rubik's Cube (c. 1980, "standard" size, 57mm).
Bonus nerd points if you know why there are triangular cutouts in those two stickers on the big one.
