A misty or foggy view from Big Hill Lookout in Stawell, Victoria, just on sunrise. Straight over my shoulder, the view was equally foggy, but was a cold, blue-gray scene hidden in the shadows of Big Hill.
A re-edit of an old favourite.
Looking North towards the Stanislaus Canyon, New Melones Dam. I often see serious clouds in that direction, following the Stanislaus River upstream towards Sonora Pass.
Thunderstorm started as seen from the left side of this panoramic shot. Soon it came towards my direction and I have to get off the rooftop.
It was the hottest summer ever recorded in Athens (until the next one of course...), but the last 2 days of August tried to "compensate" for it. The lightning activity was great and I had some captures despite the daylight. This storm was a bit dangerous. Minutes after this shot, I took some cover and left the camera out. It recorded this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1drUBDMOP8. Taken on 30.08.2024, in Athens, Greece. Canon 5Dmk4, Sigma Art 14 mm, f/2.5, 1/25'', iso 100, NiSi ND64 nano IR filter.

One of these evenings, while waiting for the comet to appear, there was a tiny green flash behind the hills. This specific kind of green flash is a combo of 3 factors: The main factor which is the usual refraction of visible light through the atmosphere, here with the "help" of light passing over the edge of the hill which obscures the red/orange part of the solar disk and the attenuation of blue/violet light in the Earth's atmosphere (thus leaving the green to appear over the red that is gone behind the edge). Taken on 12.10.2024, in Athens, Greece.

These two flyers were enjoying some great conditions at Stanwell Tops just north of Woolongong on the New South Wales coast. The nearer one's name was Jesse (he was one of the flyers standing on the ground in my last post) who saw me with various cameras and tripods, and he was very obliging with some wonderful close swoops. I only just managed to catch this one and keep it within the frame of the medium format camera.
Original colour slide was taken in July 2009 with a 3D World medium format stereo film camera using Fuji Provia 100F colour slide film. Scanned with a Canon R10 with RF24-240mm lens and Nisi close up attachment.
Happy Wing Wednesday!
More than 30 TLEs were observed during the evening of Nov. 13, 2023 over thunderstorms at SE. Aegean Sea. Parent lightning flash seen below. The dark horizontal patches are clouds. Orion nebula can be seen on top.
TLEs (like red sprites) appear, under specific circumstances, above thunderstorms (e.g. red sprites appear at altitudes of 40-90 km).
I've used a Sigma 85 mm lens at f/1.4, for 1/25'' with 30 k iso.

This is a red sprite event over the thunderstorms south of Crete (on the east side of the Medicane on 28/10) as seen from S. Attica during the night of Oct. 28, 2021. Faint parent lightning flash at the bottom, behind a cloud layer, can be seen as well. I've used a Sigma 85 mm lens at f/1.4, for 1/4'' with 60k iso. Day 255 - 365/2023 - A Never-Ending Journey
--------------------------------------------------------------------
After three stormy days, it was very nice to see the sun glow in the sky this evening.
This sunrise is from convective debris associated with storms that formed in central KS on the NE border before sunrise the day before.

Well, it's that time of year again for Aussie rev-heads. The Bathurst 1000 race is coming up this weekend at Mount Panorama in Bathurst, and I am getting in full couch potato mode ready for three days of V8 racing in front of the telly!
Although I don't normally follow the full motorsport season, I do have a special place for this particular race at Mount Panorama motor racing circuit, having been involved in the TV broadcast of the race many years ago. The broadcast itself actually won a TV Week Logie Award during one of my broadcast jobs there, and despite the presenter Bill Woods mentioning my position in the Logies acceptance speech, they strangely haven't sent me the Logie yet! ; )
This is my 1/18th scale die-cast model of the 2009 winner of this iconic race. This 2009 Holden VE Commodore was driven by Will Davison and Garth Tander, who won the Peter Brock King of the Mountain Trophy for 2009.
Taken with a backdrop of the Grampians Mountain range, taken from the Big Hill lookout in Stawell, Victoria. This shot was displayed on my computer screen with the model mounted just in front and lit with an LED desk lamp set on warm white to blend with the sunset colours.
Perry sandhills at sunset, Wentworth NSW.
Some interesting solid red sand formations in the SW corner of the sandhills.

3 separate squall lines over the SE Aegean sea, were producing TLEs all night long, during the night of Dec. 4, 2021. This one is from that night. Observe the inclination of the tendrils towards the top of the thundercloud. This inclination is dictated by the temporary, intensified electric field close to the cloud. TLEs appear, under specific circumstances, above active thunderstorms. On this night, more than 300 events were recorded. Surely one of the nights to remember. I've used a Sigma 85 mm lens at f/1.4, for 1/25'' with 51.2k iso. More about the Greek Team chasing red sprites and TLEs in general: antisimvatikos.blogspot.com/2019/05/tles-greek-archive-of...

A sunrise image dedicated to our Flickr friend Graham Little who has just sadly passed away.
Graham was very generous with his often humurous comments and support. It was always a great pleasure to share in his own travels with his wife Ingrid as he took us all to many parts of the world, including places most of us will never see, like Antarctica. Through his artistic talents with fractals, he took us to far off worlds with his wonderful imagination and story telling. He shared his local world too with wonderful wildflower shots from the west and he gave us some beautiful sunsets from 90 mile beach where he loved to travel to.
You will be sadly missed Graham.
Nine minutes before sunset. Tropical moisture from the Desert Southwest makes its annual trek over the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Tuolumne County, California. The last thing we need is lightning! Major rain and any snow won't return to this dry climate until November or so.
The Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts is 1,600-seat, 151,000-square-foot (14,000 m2) concert hall located in Carmel, Indiana.
After years of planning, The Palladium, one of three venues that comprises the Center for the Performing Arts, opened on January 29, 2011 and today serves as a venue for various musical concerts and performances. It is located at 1 Center Green, adjacent to the Carmel City Center. The four-fronted, symmetrical design of The Palladium, massed around the domed central space of the single room concert hall was inspired by Andrea Palladio’s Villa Capra, La Rotonda (1566). The Palladium is based upon the traditional shoebox-shaped concert hall with high ceilings and massive, sound-reflecting walls. The facility also features a limestone façade and movable acoustical panels that can significantly alter the acoustics of the hall.
The Palladium was designed by David M. Schwarz Architects of Washington, D.C. with local consultation by CSO Architects as Architect of Record. Indianapolis-based Shiel Sexton Co. Inc. served as construction manager.
The Palladium is home to the Great American Songbook Foundation. The organization's administrative headquarters are located on the Gallery level.
The other two venues that comprise the Center are the 500 seat Tarkington Theatre and the Studio Theatre – a black box with flexible seating.
Steven Libman was the founding President and CEO of The Center for the Performing Arts from 2009 to 2011. While there, he successfully planned and launched the first few seasons and produced two major opening night festival galas with: Michael Feinstein, Chris Botti, Neil Sedaka, Dionne Warwick, David Hyde Pierce and dancers from American Ballet Theatre. He also produced a PBS special with Michael Feinstein seen by 11 million viewers. The special titled "Michael Feinstein: The Sinatra Project" was nominated for Outstanding Music Direction at the 64th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards.
In 2012, Tania Castroverde Moskalenko was hired to lead the organization. She was previously the CEO at the Germantown Performing Arts Center in Germantown, TN. Under her leadership, the Center continued to expand the breadth and diversity of programming offered in its three venues and attained increased funding from individual and corporate sources. In March 2015, the Center announced a significant four-year sponsorship agreement with Carmel-based Allied Solutions.
In August 2016 Moskalenko resigned from her position and Board Chair, Jeffrey C. McDermott (Partner, of the law firm Krieg DeVault) assumed the role of Interim President and CEO. In August 2017 McDermott was officially elected by the Center Board as the new full time President/CEO. McDermott will also remain Senior Counsel to Krieg DeVault.

Panorama just before sunset, with an unusual mid-spring, cool and wet system dipping into central California.
An early morning shot taken on Mount Wellington near Hobart in Tasmania.
This shot was originally taken sometime between 2006 and 2009 in Hobart, Tasmania.
Original colour slide was taken with a 3D World medium format stereo film camera, 80mm lens, using Fuji Provia 100 colour slide film. Scanned with a Canon R10 with RF24-240mm lens and Nisi close up attachment.
The passing stormclouds on the horizon were fillled with light every time the lightning flashed, adding to the peach coloured afterglow from the sunset. The solar powered lamps on the bird-watchinig jetty were shining brightly as were the stars overhead. It all added up to a wonderful light-show!
To the naked eye, all was mostly dark, but the 30 second exposure brought out the light and colours (along with some slight star trails).
