Tutorial: Create A Digital Camera With Wooden Accents Using Photoshop
As designers, we occasionally need digital versions of electronic devices to use in our designs. All to often however, we find that the device we need doesnt actually exist in the format that we need. In times like those, having experience building realistic-looking electronic devices in Photoshop can be a real life-saver. In this tutorial we will learn how to draw a digital camera using Photoshop.
Created using the Sweet Shoppe Design Smart Aleck kit, which was part of the August 2012 Digi Game (www.thedailydigi.com).

Created for Macro Monday's Weekly Theme, November 21. This week's task is to represent in a macro fashion anything “metallic.” Here is the key to my house . . .
We’re creating a Haunted House with lower-school students in our Maker Art class at the Lycée Français this fall.
In this after-school workshop, students are building a fantasy world together, with magical creatures, ghosts, witches and other animated characters inspired by Halloween.
We are combining arts and technology to bring their creations to life: each student will have their own room in our haunted house, and they will learn to build simple robots with motors and Arduino, then play with lights and sounds to tell their stories for our ‘show and tell’.
For our first class, we invited students to plan their Haunted House together, then design their rooms and characters, to be featured inside their cardboard ‘wonderboxes.’ My associate Sarah Brewer showed them how to create their own electronic circuit to light up an LED, using copper tape to connect the LED to the battery.
We teach this class to students in grades 4 and 5 at the Lycée Français in Sausalito, every Thursday at 3:30pm, from September 15 to December 15, 2016.

We are creating a Time Machine at ‘Pataphysical Studios, our art collective in Mill Valley, where surrealism meets the maker culture. Our Time Machine will take you on wild rides through time, to meet characters from the past, present and future.
On a balmy summer afternoon, we gathered in the art garden to create some of its parts: dragons of change to guide you on your journey; an art priestess in her prehistorical cave; a pataphysical flag on a magic pole; a painted gear holding the secret of life; a cactus of the future strolling by in stop-motion.
We then showed our Time Machine to young Dr. Delia, who gave it the two-year old test, pushing all of its buttons to jump back in time to the age of dinosaurs, her favorite scene. I’m pleased to report that we passed the audition. :)
This was also a great opportunity to celebrate our good friend Dr. Rindbrain’s un-birthday, which we kept low-key at his request. Long live the young at heart!
We are recruiting experienced artists and makers to help create the Time Machine through art, multimedia, theater and technology. Please contact us if you are interested and live in the Bay Area. We will give a few private demos in the fall for folks who are ready to get their hands dirty with us.

This image got created by my favorite method to create 3:1 panoramas. Instead of stitching images I just crop a normal ultrawide lens image to the 3:1 format. This worked especially well here. The cropped version is a lot nicer to look at then the original image.
I copied this photo by creating a version in Picnik with 20% local contrast (clarity) added. This version will stay unchanged and so can be safely used as an embedded picture in my blog and for comments in flickr sets, group or images.

Birds. Woodland Kingfisher. Marataba. Marakele National Park. South Africa. Dec/2020
Woodland Kingfisher
The woodland kingfisher (Halcyon senegalensis) is a tree kingfisher that is widely distributed in Africa south of the Sahara
This is a medium-sized kingfisher, 23 cm (9.1 in) in length. The adult has a bright blue back, wing panel and tail. Its head, neck and underparts are white, and its shoulders are black. The flight of the woodland kingfisher is rapid and direct. The large bill has a red upper mandible and black lower mandible. The legs and feet are dark grey. Some birds may have greyish heads, causing confusion with mangrove kingfisher.
However, the lores are dark, creating a dark stripe through the eye (the stripe does not extend through the eye in mangrove kingfisher), and the underwing, primaries and secondaries are black with white underwing coverts (there is a black carpal patch on the white coverts in mangrove kingfisher). The inner webs of the base of the flight feathers are white, creating an indistinct white wingbar (white completely absent from wings in mangrove kingfisher). The breast is white (tends to be much greyer in mangrove kingfisher). The sexes are similar, but juveniles are duller than adults and have a brown bill.
The call of this noisy kingfisher is a loud trill sounding like a nail run down the teeth of a comb
