Waimea Valley is an area of historic cultural significance on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. The valley, being an important place in Hawaiian religion, includes several historical structures including stone terraces and walls constructed during the time of the Hawaiian monarchy. Much of the garden floor was once cultivated for taro, sweet potato, and bananas, with new crops and orchards introduced by Europeans after their arrival.
Formerly known as the Waimea Valley Audubon Center and the Waimea Arboretum and Botanical Garden, the Waimea Valley is a historical nature park including botanical gardens. It is located at 59-864 Kamehameha Highway, Haleiwa, Oahu, Hawaii and is open daily except for Christmas and New Year's Day; an admission fee is charged.
The garden was managed until 2003 by the City and County of Honolulu, when management was assumed by the National Audubon Society. In 2008, management was handed over to Hi'ipaka LLC, a non-profit company created by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.
The garden now contains 35 distinct collections, representing some 5,000 taxa from around the world. It contains one of the finest collections of Polynesian plants in existence, as well as excellent collections of very rare Hawaiian plants, rare and endangered species native to Lord Howe Island, and individual gardens dedicated to plants from Guam, Madagascar, the Mascarene Islands, the Ogasawara Islands, and the Seychelles.
Other major collections include the hibiscus evolutionary garden, araceae, bauhinia, bromeliaceae, heliconia, liliaceae, as well as bamboo, begonia, ferns, tropical fruit, etc.
The garden valley is approximate 0.75 miles in length, with a small waterfall and swimming hole at the valley's high end.

Title: "Words of the Aftermath”

What is your artwork about?
In the center is a free-hand machine embroidered iconic picture of the ruins of the twin towers. Glow-in-the-dark thread was used so in darkness the image appears almost ghostly. Words are all around the image (drifting like the reams of paper floating down after the bombing). The words include feelings, vocabulary, and ideas expressed in the aftermath of 9-11. Many of the words were taken from the letter I wrote to myself one week after the tragedy. Some words are bold and others are faint in an effort to entice the viewer to look closely at the piece? Around the border of the quilt are the names of some of the victims: male and female, common and unusual, representing those who died in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania, and across nationalities. It is quilted in a plain grid pattern designed to evoke strength.
It is simple, somber, and I hope powerful. It was a great honor to make this panel and I'm glad The Dream Rocket Project offered such a wonderful opportunity.
It is a pleasure to continue to see all of the new panels and watch as the panels travel around the country bringing the messages of the participants and the project to many people. And, as always, communicating with you is a joy.

"Georgetown is a historic neighborhood, and commercial and entertainment district located in Northwest Washington, D.C., situated along the Potomac River. Founded in 1751 in the Province of Maryland, the port of Georgetown predated the establishment of the federal district and the City of Washington by 40 years. Georgetown remained a separate municipality until 1871 when the United States Congress created a new consolidated government for the whole District of Columbia. A separate act, passed in 1895, specifically repealed Georgetown's remaining local ordinances and renamed Georgetown's streets to conform with those in the City of Washington.
The primary commercial corridors of Georgetown are the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and M Street, which contain high-end shops, bars, restaurants, and the Georgetown Park enclosed shopping mall. The Washington Harbour waterfront restaurants are located to the south on K Street, between 30th and 31st Streets.
Georgetown is home to the main campus of Georgetown University and numerous other landmarks, such as the Volta Bureau and the Old Stone House, the oldest house in Washington. The embassies of Cameroon, France, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Mongolia, Sweden, Thailand, Ukraine and Venezuela are located in Georgetown.
Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia, also known as just Washington or simply D.C., is the capital city and federal district of the United States. It is located on the east bank of the Potomac River, which forms its southwestern and southern border with the U.S. state of Virginia, and it shares a land border with the U.S. state of Maryland on its other sides. The city was named for George Washington, a Founding Father and the first president of the United States, and the federal district is named after Columbia, the female personification of the nation. As the seat of the U.S. federal government and several international organizations, the city is an important world political capital. It is one of the most visited cities in the U.S. with over 20 million annual visitors as of 2016.
The U.S. Constitution provides for a federal district under the exclusive jurisdiction of Congress; the district is not a part of any U.S. state (nor is it one itself). The signing of the Residence Act on July 16, 1790, approved the creation of the capital district located along the Potomac River near the country's East Coast. The City of Washington was founded in 1791, and Congress held its first session there in 1800. In 1801, the territory, formerly part of Maryland and Virginia (including the settlements of Georgetown and Alexandria), officially became recognized as the federal district. In 1846, Congress returned the land originally ceded by Virginia, including the city of Alexandria; in 1871, it created a single municipal government for the remaining portion of the district. There have been efforts to make the city into a state since the 1880s, a movement that has gained momentum in recent years, and a statehood bill passed the House of Representatives in 2021.
The city is divided into quadrants centered on the Capitol, and there are as many as 131 neighborhoods. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 689,545, which makes it the 23rd most populous city in the U.S. as of 2020, the third most populous city in the Mid-Atlantic, and gives it a population larger than that of two U.S. states: Wyoming and Vermont. Commuters from the surrounding Maryland and Virginia suburbs raise the city's daytime population to more than one million during the workweek. Washington's metropolitan area, the country's sixth largest (including parts of Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia), had a 2020 estimated population of 6.3 million residents; and over 54 million people live within 250 mi (400 km) of the District.
The three branches of the U.S. federal government are centered in the district: Congress (legislative), the president (executive), and the Supreme Court (judicial). Washington is home to many national monuments and museums, primarily situated on or around the National Mall. The city hosts 177 foreign embassies as well as the headquarters of many international organizations, trade unions, non-profits, lobbying groups, and professional associations, including the World Bank Group, the International Monetary Fund, the Organization of American States, AARP, the National Geographic Society, the American Red Cross, and others.
A locally elected mayor and a 13-member council have governed the district since 1973. Congress maintains supreme authority over the city and may overturn local laws. The District of Columbia does not have representation in Congress, although D.C. residents elect a single at-large congressional delegate to the House of Representatives who has no vote. District voters choose three presidential electors in accordance with the Twenty-third Amendment to the United States Constitution, ratified in 1961." - info from Wikipedia.
The fall of 2022 I did my 3rd major cycling tour. I began my adventure in Montreal, Canada and finished in Savannah, GA. This tour took me through the oldest parts of Quebec and the 13 original US states. During this adventure I cycled 7,126 km over the course of 2.5 months and took more than 68,000 photos. As with my previous tours, a major focus was to photograph historic architecture.

How can I make a difference?
In 2008, a group of educators and artists formed the International Fiber Collaborative (IFC) a non-profit organization with a mission to create deeper learning experiences through art, collaboration, and cross-curricular programming for individuals and their communities.
IFC’s current initiative, The Dream Rocket Project, started in 2009 has exhibited submissions in over 105 venues; in 2014 submissions will be connected side by side to wrap a 363’ Saturn V Moon Rocket replica at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL (48’ taller than the Statue of Liberty).
With every artwork received a student has had to ask; what is my dream for my future, and the future of my community and our world? How can students across our nation with many skills collaborate to make a difference? How can creativity and other subjects such as space, technology, science, and leadership inspire innovation? How can I make a difference?

A Little over a year after its implementation, members of the Lydford/Moneague women’s farmer Group have been reaping Pig Production successes beyond the initial projections.
The group of women from the rural Lydford/Moneague communities in South East St. Ann with support from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Jamaica have turned to pig production to support themselves and their families in the absence of opportunities once linked to the bauxite sector.
Under a project that began in 2016, the FAO equipped the group of nine (9) women with financial resources and technical expertise to provide additional employment for women in the community and also expose them to pork production and business Management skills. Since then, the project’s beneficiaries have been commending the FAO for what they say have contributed to the improvement of their income and livelihood opportunities.
Under the project, an 880 square feet piggery unit and adjacent sow paddock was created and the group presented with 15 pigs (three pregnant gilts, two maiden gilts and ten weaner pigs) as well as feed and medication inputs.
Notably, women in the group were also trained in livestock management, land and animal husbandry; animal bio safety and reproduction. The women also received business development training to include marketing and book-keeping.
To date, the group now has 42 pigs and counting and are looking to sustain the positive gains by expanding to agriculture micro-enterprising. Based on the active jerk seasoning and sauce industry in neighbouring Golden Grove and Walkers wood communities, the Lydford/Moneague Women’s Group is assessing ways to move up the value chain for processed pork. There is also an opportunity to engage Community youth through collaboration with the newly opened Jeffrey Ville Agricultural School in Moneague.

It is pertinent to mention here that the capital city of Lombok has a thriving weaving industry. You can find some bright, patterned songket cloths for which Lombok is famous. Each weaver family in Lombok has some generations of weaving expertise and today, everything is used by them, gold, silver, silks and cotton to create dazzling pieces of patterned poetry.
Today, the preschool teachers were in their classrooms, cleaning things up. They vacuumed carpets, wiped down hard surfaces, ...and of course, cleaned toys, in anticipation of the students' arrival. I went into the kitchen and found this scene. Naked women and camo-clad men, heaped in a dish drainer. I suppose the unintentional symbolism is self-evident. As culture creates gender, we create it intentionally unequal . . .and dehumanizing. What we're teaching our children will last a lifetime. Day four for Project 365.

Carroll County Arts Council 2017 PEEPshow - A Display of Marshmallow Masterpieces! Featuring more than 150 sculptures, dioramas, graphic arts, oversized characters and mosaics created and inspired by Peeps®!
This was my submission, "Create..." to the 1st Annual Chain-link Fence Art Exhibition and Competition. Had a lot of fun with this, inspired by chain-link fencing of which I’ve never worked with before, tricky stuff ;) My arms got a work out.
MATERIALS: a 4 ft. x 4ft. scrap piece of chain-link fencing, a found barbeque grill (web), crystals, glass beads, found metal nuts/bolts/washers, metal wire and scrap telephone wire. I wanted people to discover the message in the spider’s web, “create” that would tie into the leading ant’s message of peace, happiness, laughter, love, opportunity, dreams, something(!). It’s good fun if we choose to create positive things for ourselves and the world :)

There was no easy way to get a snap without angular distortion or flash glare. So, i've used FD's toys (finally) to create this collage of all four views.
The painting is just a doodle, more pleasure taken in the application of the paint than anything else. On paperboard, an application of acrylic gesso (in varying thicknesses and textures). While the gesso was still rather damp, i finger painted with a heavy body acrylic (tinted with fluid acrylics) mixed with Golden's tar gel -- what a wonderful feel to that paint! Then fluid gold acrylic with the fluid medium was washed over different sections.

Municipalities will receive $1.1 billion to build core infrastructure that will get Albertans working, support municipal and public transit operating costs and create thousands of good-paying jobs now.
Alberta’s government is providing municipalities with $500 million in additional funding to build shovel-ready infrastructure projects starting in 2020, creating thousands of jobs as part of Alberta’s Recovery Plan. In addition, Alberta will match $233 million in federal funding to support municipal operating costs during the pandemic and $70 million to support public transit operating costs – for a total of $606 million under the Safe Restart Agreement.
“The past five months have been tough for Albertans as we faced the global coronavirus recession, the unprecedented collapse of energy prices, and the COVID-19 pandemic. But Albertans are resilient, and Alberta’s Recovery Plan is a bold plan to build, diversify, and create jobs. This investment will provide municipalities with the funding they need to get through this crisis, create good jobs now, and build the infrastructure that will fuel economic growth in our province for generations to come.” said Premier Jason Kenney in Edmonton on Tuesday July 28, 2020.
The $500-million municipal stimulus program, which boosts municipal infrastructure funding by almost 30 per cent, will create an estimated 2,500 jobs from projects that will begin construction in 2020 or 2021.
Municipalities and Metis Settlements may begin applying for funding to build roads, bridges, water and wastewater treatment plants, and other important infrastructure that would not have been built in 2020 or 2021 without the stimulus.
“Alberta’s communities play a critical role in our economy and we want to help them get shovel-ready projects into the ground immediately to create jobs, drive economic growth and improve Alberta’s competitive position. We’re also asking municipalities to reduce taxes and red tape to make it easier to start up a new business, speed up approvals for development permits and make their municipality a better place to invest. Together, we’ll continue to make Alberta the best place to live and do business in North America.” said Kaycee Madu, Minister of Municipal Affairs.
“Alberta’s government is investing in roads, bridges, water and wastewater infrastructure that Albertans want and need, diversifying our economy and creating thousands of jobs in the process. I look forward to working with our municipal partners to build worthwhile projects that help develop and grow new economic sectors, and create much-needed jobs today.” said Ric McIver, Minister of Transportation.
Even before the municipal stimulus program, Alberta had committed $1.85 billion in Budget 2020 for municipalities including the Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) and $244 million from the federal government’s Gas Tax Fund.
Alberta’s Recovery Plan is a bold, ambitious long-term strategy to build, diversify, and create tens of thousands of jobs now. By building schools, roads and other core infrastructure we are benefitting our communities. By diversifying our economy and attracting investment with Canada’s most competitive tax environment, we are putting Alberta on a path for a generation of growth.
