Womensphere 2016 Summit on Creating the Future: Full Steam Ahead

Womensphere’s Annual Fall Summit brought together over 200 diverse leaders and emerging leaders across sectors, including executives, professionals, entrepreneurs, educators, scientists, artists, student leaders, and leaders from civil society. Convened on the day before the 2016 US national elections, we were thrilled to be able to come together in celebration and strength, to share, discuss, ideate, and collaborate on creating the future to accelerate the advancement of women in all fields.
We were excited to honor Morgan Stanley Vice Chairman Carla Harris with the Womensphere Global Leadership Award for her powerful and creative vision, her longstanding commitment to empowering women and youth of color, and more than a dozen other great reasons. We were happy to bring together ground-breaking innovators, executives, educators, artists, and leaders creating change for women around the world – to launch some very important initiatives. The event offered a forum for sharing and co-designing global and local programs that accelerate the advancement of women and girls in America and around the world.

I create bodies of work that explore subjects such as gender, artifice, and spectacle. Utilizing processes ranging from directorial to anthropological, I showcase exuberantly irrepressible personalities who revel in challenging clichés associated with masculinity and femininity. A sampling of recent subjects include Girls Girls Girls (the world's first and only all-female Mötley Crüe tribute band), Tazzie Colomb (the world's longest competing female bodybuilder), and LACTIC Incorporated (an avant-garde clothing brand that takes the detritus of corporate life and reinterprets it into one-of-a-kind structural garments that challenge the polarization of gender).
With my current project "Life is Drag", I am documenting the most singular and innovative performers of the currently exploding alt-drag and neo-burlesque scenes. I am 3 years into this project and have so far made 250+ portraits, created in my Brooklyn studio as well as during residencies - in 2021 in New York City (The Cell Theater, Bushwig) and in Pittsburgh (The Kelly Strayhorn Theater, Blue Moon Bar, Bloomfield Garden Club), and in 2020 in New England (3S Artspace).
Over the course of my 2 month Wave Pool residency, I worked with 25 performers - including members of Cincinnati based ODD Presents drag haus and Smoke & Queers burlesque troupe, as well as with other performers from the tri-state area.
The residency also included an exhibition featuring this ever-growing archive, as well as multiple live performance events. These photos are from the after party at Good Judy's after the closing reception at Wave Pool on April 30th, 2022, featuring performances by:

- Ceres Cobb

"Life is Drag" was the 2022 Vance-Waddell Residency, and as a part of that I selected a Cindy Sherman photograph and Janine Antoni sculpture from the Vance-Waddell collection to inform and expand on the installation for this project.

Today, the preschool teachers were in their classrooms, cleaning things up. They vacuumed carpets, wiped down hard surfaces, ...and of course, cleaned toys, in anticipation of the students' arrival. I went into the kitchen and found this scene. Naked women and camo-clad men, heaped in a dish drainer. I suppose the unintentional symbolism is self-evident. As culture creates gender, we create it intentionally unequal . . .and dehumanizing. What we're teaching our children will last a lifetime. Day four for Project 365.
Creating your own Xmas cards is much easier than buying them in a store!
I designed this card for the newspaper to send to their various clients, hence the safe and secular "Season's Greetings" instead of "Merry Christmas" (don't get me started on that). They rejected it, so I used it as my own personal card that year.
The snowman was drawn in pencil, inked, then scanned and colored in Photoshop. The 3D text was created in Illustrator with the extrude & bevel filter, then imported into Photoshop where the highlights and icy textures were added.
Backgrounds and snow were created in Photoshop as well.

I created a Chirping Wheel of Time for my friend Howard’s 69th birthday. This kinetic art piece spins a wheel of winged ‘pataphysical talismans, in short bursts of motion that sound like a bird chirping. To illuminate the artwork, a circle of lights all around the wheel cycles through the colors of the rainbow.
The wheel was designed in Illustrator and laser cut on thin birch plywood. I then glued the pieces together and sprayed them, using black for the background, gold for the wheel and silver for the wings. A continuous servo motor spins the wheel, while a NeoPixel LED strip provides the illumination. Both are controlled by an Arduino Uno microprocessor.

So, these are the letters I created by printing text on a sticky A4 and cutting out the letters using the Cuttlebug machine. I copy-pasted the (French) text from a French website and altered the fonts.
Marigny, or Faubourg Marigny, was one of the first "suburbs" or New Orleans, created directly downriver from the French Quarter. ('Faubourg' means 'fake city' -- aka suburb -- in French.)
Created and subdivided in 1805 by the Marigny family, who had their plantation at what is now the downriver corner of Elysian Fields & St. Peter, the current neighborhood is roughly triangular in shape, bound by Esplanade, St. Claude Avenue, Franklin Street (or Press Street three blocks farther downriver depending on who you ask), and the Mississippi River, being bisected by Elysian Fields Avenue.
In the 19th century, the neighborhood had many refugees from the Caribbean (namely Haiti after the revolution there) and later followed by Irish & German immigrants mid-century. For a time, there were a number of "coffeehouses" (a euphemism for brothels)...and actual brothels. All of the streets originally had names like "Love," "Craps," and "Good Men" before being renamed in the 1850s as extensions of the French Quarter streets (Rampart, Dauphine, Royal, etc.) that most locals know today.
Fast forward to the 21st century, and you find a cozy, quirky, more relaxed and intimate vibe in the mainly residential neighborhood. You'll find neighborhood bars, a variety of restaurants, beautiful residential architecture, and a little bit of street art.
The best part of the Marigny (for most) is Frenchmen Street, from Washington Square down to Esplanade. It's not quite a pedestrian street, but it's pretty close. Most every night of the week -- but definitely more so on weekends -- you'll find the street fairly full of people and more full of music.
Having more live music clubs than anything else, you'll have your choice of jazz (at Snug Harbor, the Spotted Cat, or the Apple Barrel) and blues and other soulful music at the other clubs like Bamboula's, the Three Muses, Favela Chic. It's just fun to walk down the street and let the sensory overload wash over you. If you want a break, hop into Frenchmen Art & Books to find great books about New Orleans -- including a book about the history of this neighborhood by Scott Ellis, or Dat Dog directly across the street for some "gourmet" hot dogs that'll probably add an inch or so to your waistline. If you're here on the right night (Thursday-Sunday), you can also pop into the Frenchmen Art Bazaar -- an outdoor art gallery/market, that's open from 7:00 p.m. to midnight those days.
If the French Quarter is a little too chaotic for you, Marigny is definitely the place to be.
This beautiful table was designed, created, and shared by a very talented customer using some of my koi, lily pad and bubble tiles. I love the vibrant colors and use of the rocks and glass. Apparently, it made such an impression on her friends and family that she's had requests to make more :)

Jolly Yellow Coated Japanese Crew - Creating a Cacaphony of Sound - Royal Mile - Edinburgh Festival 2009 - this exuberant group were prepared for the rain with their yellow raincoats and were creating a "delightful" noise with their "high quality" hand crafted musical instruments - they certainly were enjoying themselves!

Edinburgh Festival is a collective term for several simultaneous arts and cultural festivals which take place during August each year in Edinburgh - the Festival has been running for over 50 years and attracts participants ..and audiences from all over the world.

Walking on the public footpath through Saxon Gate Nature Reserve alongside the River Lark, in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, East Anglia
The Nature Reserve was created by conservationist Doreen Tilley. She was involved in the dredging of three ponds at Saxon Gate Nature Reserve and one of them was named the Tilley Pond. Through her efforts, she created a sustainable environment for water voles and great crested newts.
Mrs Tilley played a leading role in the campaign to stop Greene King from building an access road, off Cullum Road, through part of the water meadows.
Although the road was eventually built, her efforts led to Greene King creating an environmental scheme in 2002 which included a pathway through one of the meadows, fencing and planting wildflowers.
Mrs Tilley was named Suffolk Woman of the Year in 2001 in recognition of her work.
