Hundreds of artists, activists, designers and friends of the arts came to kick off the wonderful AfterBurn exhibit in Petaluma. This special exhibition celebrates Burning Man and its roots in the North Bay, by featuring artists who create for and document this annual arts festival in Black Rock Desert.

AfterBurn is hosted by the Petaluma Arts Center and was masterfully curated by our art partner in crime, Freddy Hahne, also known as Dr. Really. They collected a wide range of artworks from the Playa, including our colorful Huracan art car, created by our own Mind Shaft Society, the Ovule by Zoe Fry & friends, giant teapots, musical trees, winged fairies and many more inspiring artifacts, all lined up in front of the smart train station and glimmering in the setting sun.

Many creative minds, dignitaries and old friends gathered for the opening reception on Nov. 23. We captured their smiling faces throughout this uplifting reunion -- including members of Pataphysical Studio, our art collective where surrealism meets the maker spirit. Some of the folks appearing in this photo album include: Loren & Rachel Carpenter, Dana Dworin, Vickisa Feinberg, Fabrice & Phyllis Florin, Janey Fritsche, Stephanie Levene, Joni Maxx, Sue Olivier, Tim Pozar, Howard & Judy Rheingold, Marshall Smith and Ed Zingaro, to name but a few.

We all had a wonderful time honoring Burning Man’s creative culture together. Dr. Really was on top of his game, gave a masterful performance and hosted a fabulous party. We’re very grateful to him and his crew for bringing so many of us together for this very special occasion. AfterBurn will remain open to the public though January 18, 2020, and I highly recommend this unique opportunity to experience Burning Man vicariously through this amazing art collection.

A big win for us at FlickrHQ. Thanks to Sean Taylor Chapman for flexin' some badass design skills.

Today, the preschool teachers were in their classrooms, cleaning things up. They vacuumed carpets, wiped down hard surfaces, ...and of course, cleaned toys, in anticipation of the students' arrival. I went into the kitchen and found this scene. Naked women and camo-clad men, heaped in a dish drainer. I suppose the unintentional symbolism is self-evident. As culture creates gender, we create it intentionally unequal . . .and dehumanizing. What we're teaching our children will last a lifetime. Day four for Project 365.

Folded by me

i came across the create project online and thought i'd join in the action on good friday.

this is a photo i took a while back very near where i placed this on a bench on ealing common. i called it journey into the unknown and this is the text i wrote around the frame:

journey into the unknown, ealing common left for anyone who finds it good friday 2012...

remembering christ's journey into the unknown..

surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering

yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him and afflicted

but he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities

the punishment that brought us peace was on him and by his wounds we are healed...

he was despised and rejected a man of sorrows...

seeing as this was a first of me just placing art as a gift i was curious to see what would happen. three lots of people walked past and didn't even look or notice it. then two women walked by, stopped, picked up the photo, had a conversation passing it between them, tucked it under the arm and walked off. that all lasted around 10 minutes. i hope they enjoy it, it sparks something - but who knows?!

This year's create a monster girls. Together like this you can see how short siren/mermaid girl IS, and also how much mad detail they went into this time around. I mean daaamn these ghouls are detailed. A lot you can't even really photograph. Blob girl has dribbles on her arms and ice has carved facets to her limbs and body. Mummy girl is totally moulded bandages and Gorgon gets a full scaled body, gorgeous. My only gripe, I wish mermaid/siren could sit down or you know.. pose a little better. The way the tail fits on means she's kinda stuck standing or lying down looking awkward.

Governor Murphy signs legislation creating system of licensing for law enforcement with Acting Attorney General Platkin, Senator Greenstein, Assemblywoman Reynolds-Jackson, State Troopers Fraternal Association of New Jersey President Wayne Blanchard, and ACLU-NJ President Amol Sinha on Thursday, July 21, 2022(Edwin J. Torres/NJ Governor’s Office).

A piece of history was re-created today (Sunday 15th Aug 2010) when a replica of the Titanic's anchor was pulled through Dudley and Netherton. The original anchor was cast by Hingley's of Netherton and in 1911 was hauled to the old Dudley train station by shire horses. From there the anchor continued its journey to the Belfast shipbuilders. The Black Country re-enactment followed the route in reverse and was be filmed for a Channel 4 history series due to be shown in the Autumn.

Netherton area is famous for its chain and anchor making role in world history. In 1911 Noah Hingley's of Netherton made the anchor for the ill-fated Titanic which sank on its maiden voyage in April 1912, with the loss of more than 1,500 lives. The 16-tonne anchor was towed to Dudley station by 20 shire horses, taken by train to Fleetwood and shipped across the Irish Sea to Belfast where the Titanic was built.

A replica anchor forged at Sheffield Forgemaster Internatonal Limited was pulled by shire horses from Dudley to Netherton and filmed for a new five-part series for Channel 4 and National Geographic. In "We Built Titanic" engineers tried to rebuild and recreate part of the ship to explore Edwardian industrial and social history.

When today's procession reached Netherton there was a civic presentation ceremony and the anchor was placed on a temporary plinth before it goes to the Black Country Living Museum while a permanent base is created in the borough.

Everyone in Netherton was keen to play a part in this historic event which I am sure will be as as keenly remembered by the people of Netherton as the original procession was in 1911.
