Vaslav Nijinsky was expected to create choreography for and assume the leading role in "The Legend of Joseph," but he was fired in 1913. Diaghilev then turned to Michel Fokine to create the choreography. Leonide Massine was Diaghilev's new protege and Nijinsky's successor, but he didn't hold a candle to Nijinsky as a dancer. So, Massine let his stage presence and acting ability make up for the lack of dancing technique.

Famed opera singer Maria Kuznetsova participated in, and helped to finance, Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes in London and Paris on the eve of World War I. With the help of her friend, the artist and designer Léon Bakst, Kuznetsova won the role of Potiphar's wife in Richard Strauss's ballet “La Légende de Joseph” in 1914. It was produced by Diaghilev, composed and conducted by Strauss, choreographed by Michel Fokine, and designed by Leon Bakst, Alexandre Benois and José Maria Sert, while the lead was danced by Léonide Massine.

It was an important role, and Kuznetsova was certainly in good company, but they were held to a punishing schedule with little time to rehearse. To make matters worse, Strauss was in a foul mood because his lover, Ida Rubinstein, who was to have danced Lydia Sokolova's role, had abruptly abandoned the project. Furthermore, Strauss abhorred working with French musicians, and was constantly at daggers drawn with the orchestra. Diaghilev, meanwhile, had not yet recovered from Vaslav Nijinsky's departure the previous year from the Ballets Russes. Nijinsky had choreographed and created the title role – replaced after his marriage and fall from grace by Fokine and Massine.

Despite the problems backstage and an outraged British press, who found the work obscene, the ballet successfully debuted in both London and Paris that spring. The initial run lasted seven performances. This was shortly followed by a further seven in London conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham, who had loaned the money for the commission to Diaghilev. With the looming war, Strauss never received his fee of 6,000 francs. In 1947 Strauss prepared a Symphonic Fragment from The Legend of Joseph, for reduced orchestra. This was premiered in March 1949 in Cincinnati under Fritz Reiner.

The ballet is based on the biblical story of Joseph who was sold into slavery by his brothers. Of all the brothers, Joseph was loved the most and given a long coat of many colors by his father. Jealousy led the brothers to sell Joseph to serve Potiphar, the captain of Pharaoh’s guard. Joseph found favor with Potiphar and prospered in everything he did, eventually becoming overseer of Potiphar’s entire household. Potiphar’s wife began to desire Joseph and sought to have an affair with him. He refused but she persisted and, after some days of begging for him, she made a false claim against him by charging that he tried to rape her. This resulted in Joseph’s imprisonment. Title: Peace, music, imagination, recycling

Theme Chosen: Peace, music, imagination, recycling / Community

Number of participants: 2 - 6

Materials and techniques used: Colored pencils, and markers

Participants: Taylor, Raina, Cole, Haley

What is your artwork about? Peace, music, imagination, recycling

Artwork 1: Essay by Haley

“I chose the music theme. Music is a big part of my life, as well as many others. My picture displays several of my favorite bands’ logo.

Artwork 2: Essay by Cole

“Recycling is important to me because I want to save the world. I’m bullied in school & my only outlet that has kept me from committing suicide is recycling. I felt like recycling would be a great topic to help me cope with my issues.”

Artwork 3: Essay by Raina

“The girl in my picture is having a serious creative streak. She’s lost in her own imagination. In her imagination, astronaut kittens and rainbow unicorns are tangible. Butterflies watch the wonders unfold from their wings, and it’s possible to bathe in rainbow juice.”

Artwork 4: Essay by Taylor

“I did my project on peace. It could also be represented as world peace or just plain America. I included the 50 states and the 13 colonies.”

How can I make a difference? In 2008, a group of educators and artists formed the International Fiber Collaborative (IFC) a non-profit organization with a mission to create deeper learning experiences through art, collaboration, and cross-curricular programming for individuals and their communities.

IFC’s current initiative, The Dream Rocket Project, started in 2009 has exhibited submissions in over 105 venues; in 2014 submissions will be connected side by side to wrap a 363’ Saturn V Moon Rocket replica at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL (48’ taller than the Statue of Liberty).

With every artwork received a student has had to ask; what is my dream for my future, and the future of my community and our world? How can students across our nation with many skills collaborate to make a difference? How can creativity and other subjects such as space, technology, science, and leadership inspire innovation? How can I make a difference?

Stalker's team take full advantage of the lethal obstacle cast by the Dark Knight and bolt through the tunnel!

Stalker: Hit any Cobras hard and quiet-like! Silent weapons! We don't wanna bring any more attention to ourselves!

Stalker clenches his jaw as his words and the frantic footsteps of his team echo through the tunnel, plainly betraying the intention behind his order. Moments later, Jinx, at the front of the team, hurls herself flat against the wall and signals for silence to her colleagues. The team joins her as she peers around a turn in the tunnel. The others see her look for a minute, then return her attention to the Joes.

Jinx: Stalker was right. We found the communication terminal. It looks small time. There's a pair of Sand Vipers and a Tele Viper and that's it, and they are lost in a world of communication hell. That big ass Devastator

guy outside must be interfering with the signals.

Batman shakes his head.

Batman: It's part of my netting. I've got something else that should scramble their signals even more.

Batman reaches once more into his bat-utility belt, past the bat-shark-repellent and pulls out a pen-like device.

Batman: This will do the trick.

Stalker: Ok, let's take them out quiet and fast. Go!

The team swarms the already panicked Cobras as Batman activates his device! The Cobra computer console displays nothing but static and sparks burst from the helmet of the Tele-Viper as the Joes take the Cobra troopers our with expert precision!

Some weeks ago Robin Scholz made some very nice instructions for a 4 sided kirigami star and meanwhile I found some instructions to make a six sided kirigami snowflake or star. I also found two funny sites where you may make some digital experiences with kirigami snowflakes/six pointed stars.

In the first one you can’t do inner cuts, but in the second one you do, and you even have the option of making free shapes or geometric ones (in polygon mode). Anyway you’ll have lots of fun with both and they surely help you to get a preview of some of the things you can get before start cutting.

Brewery : Box Of The Month - Maenhout

WELCOME TO PITTEM

In search of something new to do or a hobby, Thijs decided to start brewing beer in his kitchen. Soon, from the kitchen he moved to brewing into his shed. Eventually, an old installation was bought from Brouwkot (today Gulden Spoor). With this quite primitive technology the labor-intensive and manual brewing continued for 5 years.
