The United Nations Regional Informational Centre (UNRIC) for Western Europe organized a Europe-wide UN competition calling for advertisements that say “NO to Violence against Women.” The competition received more than 2,700 entries from 40 countries and generated media interest across Europe. The featured advertisement was created by Vladimir Zokic.

I'm holding one of the amazing figures created by Nele Azevedo as part of the Minimum Monumnet art installation Custom House steps, Belfast - 20 Oct 2012 as I place it it begins to melt and part of the water dripping down the steps making this art installation purely transitory as it brings ot mind the victims of Titanic who died after the ship hit an ice berg !

Title: Optical Illusions and My Nighttime Memories

Theme: Your Night Sky, Astronomy

Materials and techniques: Students used a few different materials and technical skills for this project...Materials included pencil, colored pencils, and construction paper. Students learned how to create Op Art, and express a vision in their mind on paper.

Did you enjoy this project? This project took many twists and turns, when initial concepts didn't pan out, and no one was sure how it was going to turn out. However, with a little problem solving and perseverance, we were all very excited about how they turned out!

About: For this project, students learned about Op Art – or optical art, which is abstract, and often gives the impression of movement, hidden images, flashing and vibration, patterns, or of swelling or warping. Students learned about the innovative Op Art artist Edna Andrade and studied her painting 'Night Sea', that told the story of her memory of nighttime as a little girl. Students then created their own traditional and Op Art composition by drawing and coloring a favorite memory they had that took place at night, and adding a zigzag shaped piece of colored construction paper to their compositions. When four of these individual pieces are placed together in a square, they give the illusion of one cohesive artwork telling a story and also creating an optical illusion of a starburst in the center of the composition.

Artist Helen Bodycomb was commissioned to create this work, in accordance with Wyndham City Councils Art in Public Places Policy. The fountain contributes to Councils vision to revitalise the CBD streetscape, and to create an arts precinct opening spatially and symbolically towards the Werribee River.

Aesthetic additions to the CBD Streetscape reflect and enhance the relationship between the commercial precinct and the Werribee River. The selected artworks relate to each other, the environment, and reference the past, present and future of Wyndham.

The design & production team that worked with commissioned artist Helen Bodycomb were:

Rene Schaefer,

Chris Rak, and

PL Fountains.

Mayor Cr. Henry Barlow launched the artwork on 7 December 2000.

The artist and her work

"The tree is a universal symbol of life and knowledge. As such, its root system is the primary channel for its strength and survival. The root sysyem was chosen as the subject for this work because of these meanings and because it is an aesthetically pleasing form that is simultaneously familiar and unfamiliar. It takes the form of a tree but it obviously is not a tree.

The traditional symbolic meanings of the tree include:

* both the giver and manifestation

* the synthesis of heaven, earth and water

* nourishment, shelter, support".

Sculpture feature

The stainless steel sculpture is the central focus of the fountain, taking its form from an inverted red gum tree root system. River red gums proliferate along the banks of the Werribee River. The fountain component of the work features a series of vertical streams flowing from the tree root branches.

The characteristics of the sculpture's design complement the modernist lines of the adjacent Wyndham Community Cultural Centre, thereby celebrateing the interface of build and organic environments. The viewer's eye is led from the Cultural Centre to the River Walk at the end of Wedge Street, to the Werribee River beyond.

Mosaic

The mosaic surrounding the sculpture suggests that the tree is encircled by water. The domed base, whilst seerving as the sculpture's plinth, depicts a radiating series of branches, gently corrugated by a series of three ripples. Patterning and colouring of the vascular branches, emanating from the base of the sculpture, represent the rich and complex indigenous heritage of the region. Water areas of the mosaic were rendered using a range of blue, green and gold hues from the Werribee River.

The design of the mosaic can be read as:

* A watery reflection of the root structure above it;

* A view of the sculpture as a tree seen from underwater;

* A Stylised representation of sections of the Werribee River and its tributaries, seen from an aerial perspective.

I wrote a tutorial for the good peeps at Go Media!

Jeff Finley released a super cool collection of hand drawn occult symbols and other esoteric assets a little while back.

They asked me to explore ways to use the set of vectors, and to write about the result of the said exploration. So I did!

The result is a record sleeve for the fictional band Fiat Lux, which just worked on their Æterna record.

You should go read the tutorial.

How far would you go to be beautiful? Media creates images that aren't possible. I love photoshop, but it creates a fake beauty. I love that beauty, but I don't try to imitate it. I wish other people understood most images in magazines are airbrushed. I'm happy with my looks. I've been feeling confident about them. I believe I am pretty, yet I feel ashamed to say that.
