In a specially created room, Bio Ink research recently entered its second phase – at the studio of the Ars Electronica Futurelab. An experimental setup of chemical substances, test tubes and electronics serves the research team, consisting of Yoko Shimizu, Georgios Tsampounaris, Samuel Jakob Eckl, and Anastasia Bragina, as a factory of innovation. Once again, digital Wacom pens and tablets act as the starting point for the creation of Bio Ink artworks: living messages, created in a creative symbiosis between microorganisms and humans.
This time, however, the idea goes a decisive step further: the researchers can now actively interact with the microbial design process via the chemical reaction chamber and a digital touch display.
During the process of drawing, the system captures digital pen data, such as pen pressure, drawing speed and tilt, and converts them into biological parameters, such as temperature, humidity and biochemical reactions. A chemical reaction chamber then allows the researchers to automatically or manually interact with the living artworks as they grow.

Stalker clenches his jaw as his words and the frantic footsteps of his team echo through the tunnel, plainly betraying the intention behind his order. Moments later, Jinx, at the front of the team, hurls herself flat against the wall and signals for silence to her colleagues. The team joins her as she peers around a turn in the tunnel. The others see her look for a minute, then return her attention to the Joes.
Jinx: Stalker was right. We found the communication terminal. It looks small time. There's a pair of Sand Vipers and a Tele Viper and that's it, and they are lost in a world of communication hell. That big ass Devastator
guy outside must be interfering with the signals.
Batman shakes his head.
Batman: It's part of my netting. I've got something else that should scramble their signals even more.
Batman reaches once more into his bat-utility belt, past the bat-shark-repellent and pulls out a pen-like device.
Batman: This will do the trick.
Stalker: Ok, let's take them out quiet and fast. Go!
The team swarms the already panicked Cobras as Batman activates his device! The Cobra computer console displays nothing but static and sparks burst from the helmet of the Tele-Viper as the Joes take the Cobra troopers our with expert precision!
Remembrance Sunday, 8 November 2015
In the United Kingdom, Remembrance Sunday is held on the second Sunday in November, which is the Sunday nearest to 11 November, Armistice Day, the anniversary of the end of hostilities in the First World War at 11 a.m. on 11 November 1918. Remembrance Sunday is held to commemorate the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women in the two World Wars and later conflicts.
Remembrance Sunday is marked by ceremonies at local war memorials in most cities, towns and villages, attended by civic dignitaries, ex-servicemen and -women, members of local armed forces regular and reserve units, military cadet forces and uniformed youth organisations. Two minutes’ silence is observed at 11 a.m. and wreaths of remembrance poppies are then laid on the memorials.
The United Kingdom national ceremony is held in London at the Cenotaph in Whitehall. Wreaths are laid by Queen Elizabeth II, principal members of the Royal Family normally including the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cambridge, the Duke of York, the Princess Royal, the Earl of Wessex and the Duke of Kent, the Prime Minister, leaders of the other major political parties, the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Commonwealth High Commissioners and representatives from the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force, the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets and the civilian services, and veterans’ groups. Two minutes' silence is held at 11 a.m., before the laying of the wreaths. This silence is marked by the firing of a field gun on Horse Guards Parade to begin and end the silence, followed by Royal Marines buglers sounding Last Post.
The parade consists mainly of an extensive march past by veterans, with military bands playing music following the list of the Traditional Music of Remembrance.
Other members of the British Royal Family watch from the balcony of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
After the ceremony, a parade of veterans and other related groups, organised by the Royal British Legion, marches past the Cenotaph, each section of which lays a wreath as it passes. Only ticketed participants can take part in the march past.
From 1919 until the Second World War remembrance observance was always marked on 11 November itself. It was then moved to Remembrance Sunday, but since the 50th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in 1995, it has become usual to hold ceremonies on both Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday.

Other pieces of music are then played during the march past and wreath laying by veterans, starting with Trumpet Voluntary and followed by It's A Long Way To Tipperary, the marching song of the Connaught Rangers, a famous British Army Irish Regiment of long ago.
The following is complied from press reports on 8 November 2015:
"The nation paid silent respect to the country's war dead today in a Remembrance Sunday service. Leading the nation in remembrance, as ever, was the Queen, who first laid a wreath at the Cenotaph in 1945 and has done so every year since, except on the four occasions when she was overseas.
Dressed in her customary all-black ensemble with a clutch of scarlet poppies pinned against her left shoulder, she stepped forward following the end of the two-minute silence marked by the sounding of Last Post by 10 Royal Marine buglers.
The Queen laid her wreath at the foot of the Sir Edwin Lutyens Portland stone monument to the Glorious Dead, then stood with her head momentarily bowed.
She was joined by King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, who was invited to the Cenotaph for the first time to lay a wreath marking the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands by British troops.
Watched by his wife Queen Maxima, who stood next to the Duchess of Cambridge in the Royal Box, the King laid a wreath marked with the simple message, 'In remembrance of the British men and women who gave their lives for our future.'
Wreaths were then laid by members of the Royal Family, all wearing military uniform: Prince Philip; then Prince Andrew, Prince Harry and Prince William at the same time ; then Prince Edward, Princess Anne and the Duke of Kent at the same time.
Three members of the Royal Family laying wreaths at the same time was an innovation in 2015 designed to slightly reduce the amount of time of the ceremony and thereby reduce the time that the Queen had to be standing.
Prince Charles attended a remembrance service in New Zealand.
The Prime Minister then laid a wreath. The Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, appeared at the Cenotaph for the first time. He wore both a suit and a red poppy for the occasion.
His bow as he laid a wreath marked with the words 'let us resolve to create a world of peace' was imperceptible – and not enough for some critics. Yet unlike the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Battle service earlier this year, Mr Corbyn did join in with the singing of the national anthem.
Following the end of the official service at the Cenotaph, a mammoth column more than 10,000-strong (some 9,000 of whom were veterans) began marching along Whitehall, saluting the Cenotaph as they passed, Parliament Street, Great George Street, Horse Guards Road and back to Horse Guard Parade. The Duke of Cambridge took the salute from the column on Horse Guards Parade.
Time takes its inevitable toll on even the most stoic among us, and this year only a dozen World War Two veterans marched with the Spirit of Normandy Trust, a year after the Normandy Veterans' Association disbanded.
Within their ranks was 95-year-old former Sapper Don Sheppard of the Royal Engineers. Sheppard was of the eldest on parade and was pushed in his wheelchair by his 19-year-old grandson, Sam who, in between studying at Queen Mary University, volunteers with the Normandy veterans.
'It is because of my admiration for them,' he says. 'I see them as role models and just have the utmost respect for what they did.'
While some had blankets covering their legs against the grey November day, other veterans of more recent wars had only stumps to show for their service to this country during 13 long years of war in Afghanistan.
As well as that terrible toll of personal sacrifice, the collective losses – and triumphs - of some of the country’s most historic regiments were also honoured yesterday.
The Gurkha Brigade Association - marking 200 years of service in the British Army – marched to warm ripples of applause. The King’s Royal Hussars, represented yesterday by 126 veterans, this year also celebrate 300 years since the regiment was raised.
They were led by General Sir Richard Shirreff, former Deputy Supreme Allied Commander of Nato and Colonel of the regiment who himself was marching for the first time.
'We are joined by a golden thread to all those generations who have gone before us,” he said. “We are who we are, because of those that have gone before us.' "

Wiener Neustadt, capital of the district under the Vienna Woods (Wiener Wald), owes its origin to the Babenbergerherzögen (Babenberg dukes) Leopold V. and Leopold VI . 1194 Leopold V decided in Steinfeld - then part of the Duchy of Styria - to build a fortified town to protect the local trade route against incursions from the east. He died only a little later, so his son realized this plan and is regarded as the true founder. The Nova civitatis or Neustatt - the name "Wiener Neustadt" or "Viennese New Town" arose only in the 17th Century - is the largest founding city of Lower Austria and was financed from the ransom for the English King Richard the Lionheart.
The generous privileges by the princes created the basis for the economic development of the city . Middle of the 13th Century was built at the southeast corner the castle, in 1279 the late Romanesque church was consecrated. The city was the site of numerous orders, including the Dominicans, the Franciscans and the German Order, as well as a large Jewish community (center on the present Allerheiligenplatz ) with a far beyond the borders famous Talmudic school. A masterpiece of Gothic architecture is the "(female) spinner at the Cross", one in the 80s of the 14th Century built stone Wegsäule (way column) before the northern gate.
A climax experienced Wiener Neustadt under the Emperor Frederick III. (1440-1493) as an imperial residence. The presence of the court and the political prominence led to a lively construction activity. Friedrich III. donated two Canon monasteries and prompted the establishment of other religious orders such as the Cistercians (New Monastery - Neukloster), the Pauline Hermits and the St. George Order of Knights, whose seat was moved in 1479 from Millstatt (Carinthia) to Wiener Neustadt. 1469 allowed the Pope the establishment of an - albeit small - diocese. The city, called by Frederick the 'forever faithful", received from the emperor the right to keep the double eagle (1452), as well as to promote trade a Niederlagsprivileg (staple right -1448), which forced the merchants to offer their goods in the city. The revenues should contribute to redress for damages caused by the fire of 1433.
In the conflicts between the Emperor and the estates of the Duchy of Austria because of the guardianship over King Ladislaus it came in late August 1452 to the siege of Wiener Neustadt, Friedrich III. forcing to release Ladislaus from the guardianship. Towards the end of his reign the well-fortified city finally had to capitulate after a nearly 17-month siege by the Hungarians in 1487 and open the gates to the Hungarian king Matthias Corvinus. The so-called "Corvinusbecher - cup of Corvinus", a richly decorated ceremonial cup, still reminds us of that time. Three years later, Frederick's son Maximilian I conquered the city back.
A few years after the death of Frederick III. (1493), who was pursuing a pro-Jewish policy, the large and for its scholars widely famous Jewish community was disbanded. 1496 Maximilian I ordered the expulsion of all Jews in Styria, in Wiener Neustadt and Neunkirchen. The last Jews left in 1500 their hometown, the synagogue became a Allerheiligenkapelle (chapel of All Saints). 1519 Maximilian was buried in his native town under the high altar of St. George's Chapel. His magnificent tomb, the "Black Mannder", remained, however, contrary to his wishes in Innsbruck. Under his grandson and successor Ferdinand I. Wiener Neustadt 1522 became venue of the trial against the leading members of the Estates opposition, which ended with nine death sentences and as "Wiener Neustadt blood Court (Wiener Neustädter Blutgericht)" went down in history.
In the 16th Century the city lost, only rarely princely residence, in importance. Due to its border location, it had till the beginning of the 18th century to suffer under the incursions of the Ottomans and later the Kuruzzes, but the heavily fortified city never could be captured. The Reformation reached its peak around 1570/1580 in Wiener Neustadt, but was re-Catholicised after the establishment of the counter-reformer Melchior Klesl as administrator of the diocese (1588) in no time. The Baroque period was characterized by a number of monastic foundations, such as the Capuchins, the Carmelites (Karmeliter (m) and Karmeliterinnen (f)), the foundation of the Jesuit College with High School (1666) and the Jesuit residence in the suburbs (1743). During this time, Wiener Neustadt was again the scene of an execution creating a sensation at home and abroad: 1671 were two prominent participants of the "magnate conspiracy", Peter Graf Zrinský and Franz Frangepan, beheaded in the courtyard of the armory.
Of greatest significance for the city became the by Maria Theresa in 1752 as cadet school founded "Theresan Military Academy" in the imperial castle. Under her son Joseph II some for the development of Wiener Neustadt significant changes took place: in 1785 the diocese was moved to St. Pölten, already several years earlier, all the monasteries with the exception of the monastery Neukloster had been canceled. In the premises which had become vacant in the aftermath manufactories have been created. Wiener Neustadt became the industrial center of south-eastern Lower Austria, where the heavy industry dominated. Given its economic importance, the city with the law of 8 August 1866 a municipality statute and thus the law of the country immediacy was awarded.
The in 1842 by Günther Wenzel founded locomotive factory, the in 1899 established Daimler-Werke, headed from 1906 to 1923 by the famous designer Ferdinand Porsche and the term "Austro-Daimler" giving international recognition as well as the in 1909 created first Austrian airfield made Wiener Neustadt to one the most important industrial cities of the monarchy and to the center of aviation. The closing of those factories in the Great Depression of the interwar period left thousands of people unemployed. Under the Nazi rule, the city became the center of armaments production. The aircraft plants delivered in 1940 a quarter of the total production of the Me-109 fighters (Messerschmitt fighter plants), in the former locomotive factory established the "Rax-Werke", building the locomotive tender and from 1943 A-4 rockets. Due to the concentration of industry important to the war economy was Wiener Neustadt in the years 1943 to 1945 the target of a total of 29 air attacks and more than 50,000 bombs. The city was almost completely destroyed, about 1000 people died, not even 20 of the 4000 houses remained intact.
During the occupation time, the longtime mayor Rudolf Wehrl (1945-1965) attempted the reconstruction, which was completed in 1955 for the most part. In the second half of the 20th Century, Wiener Neustadt again became the economic and cultural center of the south-eastern Lower Austria.

Gladstone Gallery is pleased to announce our first exhibition of work with Kenyan born, New York based artist Wangechi Mutu. Spanning a wide range of media, Mutu employs interventionist methods of collage and assemblage to inventively critique the institutions of power and representation that regulate both the aesthetic and symbolic status of the gendered and racialized body. Mining such diverse sources as fashion magazines, pornography, and documentary photographs, Mutu's striking combination of the surreal, grotesque, and seductive reflects the underlying currents of violence and psycho-sexual tension embedded within the legacy of colonial discourse and the American subconscious at large.
This exhibition will feature new large-scale collage works as well as a series of sculptural figurines, which create a dynamic exchange between image and object. Made from ceramic, these moth-like creatures investigate the links between a collection’s indexical condition and the fetishization of its subject. Further exploring the hybridized female forms that populate much of her work, Mutu's variegated surfaces move decisively between dense layers of spliced images, glitter, paint, and beads to the swirling calligraphic markings of snakes and hair that give voice to these dystopic scenes of desire, horror, and excess. Mutu’s formal methods of collage and montage allow for a mixing of photographic genres and styles culled from the mass media—a representational strategy that not only resists binary determinations but complicates and disrupts the very terms upon which we read images. Through the often jarring incongruities between her collaged elements, from the performative sexuality of pornographic poses to the ethno-centric bodies captured under the anthropological gaze of National Geographic, Mutu plays with the effects of displacement by constructing images that are always already dysfunctional, disordered and destabilizing. What Mutu brilliantly establishes in her charged environments and fantastical tableau is a framework that challenges the question of difference and its attending modes of address, suggesting that resolving these issues is, to borrow the words of the theorist Barbara Johnson, “always a function of a specific interlocutionary situation—and the answers, matters of strategy rather than truth.”
Born in 1972 in Nairobi, Mutu received her MFA from Yale University. Mutu’s work has been the subject of solo shows throughout the U.S. and abroad including: Wiels, Brussels; Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin; Art Gallery of Ontario; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and the Miami Art Museum. Her work has also appeared in numerous group shows at institutions including: Gotesborgs Kunsthalle, Sweden; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tate Liverpool, UK; and the Studio Museum, New York.

Individuals & Groups around the world are contributing to a monumental public art project. They have been submitting artwork to be included in a massive cover in which will wrap a 365’ foot Saturn V Moon Rocket at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

Additionally, submitted artworks & their stories are being placed on display in public venues around the United States prior to & after the wrapping the Saturn V. To date we have over 641 groups & schools from approximately 34 states & 17 countries submitting artwork for this wrap & tour. Why this is so important ....
It has long been assumed, ever since the 17th century, that layers/strata observed in sedimentary rocks were built up gradually, layer upon layer, over many years. It certainly seemed logical at the time, from just looking at rocks, that lower layers would always be older than the layers above them, i.e. that lower layers were always laid down first followed, in time, by successive layers on top.
This was assumed to be true and became known as the superposition principle.
It was also assumed that a layer comprising a different material from a previous layer, represented a change in environmental conditions/factors.
These changes in composition of layers or strata were considered to represent different, geological eras on a global scale, spanning millions of years. This formed the basis for the Geologic Column, which is used to date rocks and also fossils. The evolutionary, 'fossil record' was based on the vast ages and assumed geological eras of the Geologic Column.
There was also circular reasoning applied with the assumed age of 'index' fossils (based on evolutionary beliefs & preconceptions) used to date strata in the Geologic Column. Dating strata from the assumed age of (index) fossils is known as Biostratigraphy.
We now know that, although these assumptions seemed logical, they are not supported by the evidence.
At the time, the mechanics of stratification were not properly known or studied.
An additional factor was that this assumed superposition and uniformitarian model became essential, with the wide acceptance of Darwinism, for the long ages required for progressive microbes-to-human evolution. There was no incentive to question or challenge the superposition, uniformitarian model, because the presumed, fossil 'record' had become dependant on it, and any change in the accepted model would present devastating implications for Darwinism.
This had the unfortunate effect of linking the study of geology so closely to Darwinism, that any study independent of Darwinian considerations was effectively stymied. This link of geology with Darwinian preconceptions is known as biostratigraphy.

What Nicolas Steno believed about strata formation is the basis of the principle of Superposition and the principle of Original Horizontality.

'Bedding plane' describes the surface in between each stratum which are formed during sediment deposition.

Meanwhile, if a change in current speed or sediment grain size occurs or perhaps the sediment supply is cut off, a bedding plane forms. Strata separated by a bedding plane may have different grain sizes, grain compositions, or colours. Several catastrophic events, flash floods, volcanic eruptions etc. have forced Darwinian, influenced geologists to admit to rapid stratification in some instances. However they claim it is a rare phenomenon, which they have known about for many years, and which does nothing to invalidate the Geologic Column, the fossil record, evolutionary timescale, or any of the old assumptions regarding strata formation, sedimentation and the superposition principle. They fail to face up to the fact that rapid stratification is not an extraordinary phenonemon, but rather the prevailing and normal mechanism of sedimentary deposition whenever and wherever there is moving, sediment-laden water. The experimental evidence demonstrates the mechanism and a mass of field evidence in normal (non-catastrophic) conditions shows it is a normal everyday occurrence.
It is clear from the experimental evidence that the usual process of stratification is - that strata are not formed by horizontal layers being laid on top of each other in succession, as was assumed. But by sediment being sorted in the flowing water and laid down diagonally in the direction of flow. See diagram:

The field evidence (in the image) presented here - of rapid, simultaneous stratification refutes the Superposition Principle and the Principle of Lateral Continuity.
We now know, the Superposition Principle only applies on a rare occasion where sedimentary deposits are laid down in still water.
Superposition is required for the long evolutionary timescale, but the evidence shows it is not the general rule, as was once believed. Most sediment is laid down in moving water, where particle segregation is the general rule, resulting in the simultaneous deposition of strata/layers as shown in the photo.

The example in the photo is the result of normal, everyday tidal action in a single incident. Where the water current or movement is more turbulent, violent, or catastrophic, great depths (many metres) of stratified sediment can be laid down in a short time. Certainly not the many millions of years assumed by evolutionists.
The composition of strata formed in any deposition event. is related to whatever materials are in the sediment mix, not to any particular timescale. Whatever is in the mix will be automatically sorted into strata/layers. It could be sand, or other material added from mud slides, erosion of chalk deposits, coastal erosion, volcanic ash etc. Any organic material (potential fossils), alive or dead, engulfed by, or swept into, a turbulent sediment mix, will also be sorted and buried within the rapidly, forming layers.

Location: Sandown, Isle of Wight. Formed 06/06/2018, This field evidence demonstrates that multiple strata in sedimentary deposits do not need millions of years to form and can be formed rapidly. This natural example confirms the principle demonstrated by the sedimentation experiments carried out by Dr Guy Berthault and other sedimentologists. It calls into question the standard, multi-million year dating of sedimentary rocks, and the dating of fossils by depth of burial or position in the strata.
Mulltiple strata/layers are evident in this example.
Dr Berthault's experiments (www.sedimentology.fr/) and other experiments (www.ianjuby.org/sedimentation/) and field studies of floods and volcanic action show that, rather than being formed by gradual, slow deposition of sucessive layers superimposed upon previous layers, with the strata or layers representing a particular timescale, particle segregation in moving water or airborne particles can form strata or layers very quickly, frequently, in a single event.
And, most importantly, lower strata are not older than upper strata, they are the same age, having been created in the same sedimentary episode.

Obviously, the uniformitarian principle, on which the geologic column is based, can no longer be considered valid. And the multi-million, year dating of sedimentary rocks and fossils needs to be reassessed. Rapid deposition of stratified sediments also explains the enigma of polystrate fossils, i.e. large fossils that intersect several strata. In fact, the vast majority of fossils are found in good, intact condition, which is testament to their rapid burial. You don't get good fossils from gradual burial, because they would be damaged or destroyed by decay, predation or erosion. The existence of so many fossils in sedimentary rock on a global scale is stunning evidence for the rapid depostion of sedimentary rock as the general rule. It is obvious that all rock containing good intact fossils was formed from sediment laid down in a very short time, not millions, or even thousands of years.

Evolutionists confidently cite multi-million year ages for rocks and fossils, but what most people don't realise is that no one actually knows the age of sedimentary rocks or the fossils found within them. So how are evolutionists so sure of the ages they so confidently quote? The astonishing thing is they aren't. Sedimentary rocks cannot be dated by radiometric methods*, and fossils can only be dated to less than 50,000 years with Carbon 14 dating. The method evolutionists use is based entirely on assumptions. Unbelievably, fossils are dated by the assumed age of rocks, and rocks are dated by the assumed age of fossils, that's right ... it is known as circular reasoning.

Notes: Photographed eight months after the First Battle of Bull Run (July 21, 1861), is this stereoscopic view of the remains of the widow Judith Henry’s house, where she was killed by multiple injuries, including a bursting Union shell that removed one of her feet. The house stood on what is now known as Henry House Hill, and according to certain accounts, it is here where the battle raged fiercest. Five months after this photograph was taken in March 1862, the Confederate army returned, and this same ground was fought over again in the Second Battle of Bull Run, in August 1862.
The scene was photographed by the team of Barnard & Gibson, who took a series of photographs of the Manassas area, after the Confederate evacuation in March 1862. I think it’s possible that the civilian seen sitting here amongst the Union soldiers could be photographer George Barnard; I’m checking into this. Below is an account of Judith Henry’s harrowing last day.

“AN EPISODE OF BULL RUN.
By WILLIAM H. HENRY.
In a portion of the plateau on which was fought the battle of Bull Run, there stands the house now owned and occupied by the aged Mr. Hugh Henry, who has furnished the following interesting incidents:
On that memorable Sabbath—July 21, 1861–nearly thirty-eight years ago, the Henry mansion was occupied by Mrs. Judith Henry, her daughter and two sons. Mrs. Henry was then eighty-five years old and bedridden from age and infirmity. She was the daughter of Louden Carter, Sr., and was born within a mile of where she now lies buried. Her husband, Dr. Isaac Henry, was the son of Hugh Henry, one of the founders of the first Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia, and a conspicuous patriot in the Revolution. Dr. Henry was a surgeon on board the United States frigate “ Constellation," commanded by Commodore Truxton, which captured the French frigate “La Insurgeante,” and had a conflict with “ La Vengeance."
To go back to the scene of our story on that summer day, it was around Mrs. Henry's home that the battle raged in all its fury. General Bee and Colonels Carter and Fischer were killed close to her door and inside her yard. Griffin's Battery was lost and retaken three times in a hand-to-land fight. There every gunner was killed, regiment after regiment coming to the rescue, determined never to yield their guns. There Tyler, Heintzelman and Hunter, with their divisions, battled from dawn to dusk. In the intense heat of that summer-day, many who went forth to fight were overcome in half an hour and compelled to fall back in the shade, dying from sheer exhaustion, their tongues hanging out and their faces black as coal. The bodies of the young and brave lay thickly strewn over the lawn, which was so covered with blood that it resembled a crimson carpet, while wounded horses galloped madly over the bodies of the dead and dying, frantic with pain. The bands were scattered, some attending to the wounded while others sought shelter in the thickets from the storm of shot and shell. There were nearly 30,000 engaged in this butchery all over the Bull Run plateau.
When Ellen Henry and her brother saw that their house was becoming the centre of the battlefield for the contending forces, they carried their mother to a ravine some distance from the house, thinking she would be safer there. As the battle progressed, however, and shot and shell fell around them, they took Mrs. Henry back to the house and placed her in bed again. The house was soon transformed into a hospital, and Mrs. Henry died among the wounded and dying soldiers, killed by the bursting of a shell in her room. Her daughter never left her bedside, and although the house was pierced through and through, both the son and daughter miraculously escaped. In the anxiety for their mother they seemed to lose all fear for their own safety.
That that estimable old lady, who had spent almost a century of a peaceful Christian life in this secluded spot, should die in the midst of such a battle, wounded three times by shots flying through her room, seems a strange dispensation of Providence. Yet even amidst the din of battle, and the groans of the dead and dying, the aged sufferer lived to say that her mind was tranquil and that she died in peace, a peace that the roar of battle and the horrors of death could not disturb.
The house, after the battle, was pillaged and left in ruins—the grounds which had been the scene of two great battles had not the vestige of a house or fence upon it at the close of the war.
There now stands upon the ground a small frame house, in front of which are the grave and monument of Mrs. Henry, with the following inscription:
“The Grave of Our Dear Mother, Killed near this spot by the explosion of shells in her dwelling during the Battle of the 21st of July, 1861. When killed she was in her 85th year and confined to her bed by the infirmities of age. “
