Great Malvern Priory church has the largest collection of surviving medieval glass of any parish church in the British Isles. In fact, only York Minster has more. At the dissolution, the priory and its lands were bought by John Knotsford, a local Sergeant at arms who had overseen the priory's closure on behalf of Thomas Cromwell, but he allowed the townspeople to buy the priory church for use as their parish church.
Malvern's remoteness and Worcestershire's sympathy for the King in the 1630s and 1640s seem to have contributed to the survival of the glass, although it has been removed and then replaced in times of conflict, most recently in the two world wars. Because of this, much of the glass is no longer in its original configuration, but the three windows in St Anne's Chapel in the south chancel aisle, depicting in 33 panels scenes from the narrative of Genesis and the first part of Exodus, are largely in order. There were once 72 of them, filling six windows. Those lost must have included the story of Cain and Abel, the destruction of Sodom and Gommorah, as well as much of Exodus.

Lab created opal ring in sterling silver by Hileman Silver Jewelry. Bright multi-color lab created opal inlay ring measuring 5.5mm wide.
The foreshore was created using 7600 sandstone blocks reclaimed from the site, each numbered and placed in their exact position. The geometry of these large blocks have been laid is beautiful, as are the many colours to be found in them, some of which I tried to capture in my drawing. Status: Scarce spring & autumn passage migrant - occurs while moving from Siberia/Central Europe south to winter in Africa.
Conservation Concern: Green-listed in Ireland. The European population has been evaluated as Declining, due to a moderate recent decline.
Identification: Though a distinctive wader, with a large body, smallish head, long neck and pointed, slightly decurved bill, individual Ruffs vary enormously in size and colour. Firstly males are approximately one third bigger than females (which are known as Reeves) - males being slightly larger than Redshank, while females are close to Dunlin-sized. Leg colour can be yellow, dull greenish yellow, orange or red. Bill can be all dark or show varying amounts of red or orange - often there is a white area of feathering around the base of the bill. Though males in full summer plumage are rarely seen in Ireland, this too is highly variable - the flamboyant ruff collar of chestnut red or black or even white is purely for display at the breeding ground. Occasionally, spring birds on passage may show a hint of these exotic colours, but the most usual plumage of birds seen here is of darkish brown wing and back feathers, each finely edged pale buff, creating a scaly effect, while the underparts are rather plain whitish, with a warm buff or creamy wash. In flight, a slow, almost floppy wingbeat is characteristic and the dark-centred rump with white ovals either side is a helpful identification feature. Not common, but can occur in small flocks in marshes, fields and mudflats - mainly spring and autumn.
Call: Almost silent.
Diet: Feeds on Invertebrates found in mudflats.
Breeding: Does not breed in Ireland. Passage birds seen in Ireland breed in meadows and bogs in Scandinavia and Russia.
Wintering: Small numbers winter on estuaries along the southern coast of Ireland. The majority of the European population winters around the Mediterranean and western Africa.
Where to see: Tacumshin & Lady's Island Lake (County Wexford), Malahide Estuary (County Dublin), Dundalk Docks (County Louth). Other sites for small numbers include Ballycotton (County Cork) and Kilcoole (County Wicklow) are the most regular sites.
Physical characteristics
Male Ruffs are highly distinctive in breeding plumage, although that is not generally the plumage that we see when this Eurasian shorebird visits Washington. The adult male varies in color from dark rufous to light brown with considerable white. It has a thick mane of long feathers around its neck and thick head-feathers that can be puffed out. The female, called a Reeve, is mottled brown-and-buff with orange legs (sometimes olive or green). Females and males in non-breeding plumage appear similar, and both have orange bills with white feathers at the bases. The female is about the size of a dowitcher, and the male is similar in size to a Greater Yellowlegs. The juvenile, the form most likely to be seen in Washington, has lighter, more yellow legs than adults. Its breast is clear buff, and its belly grades from buff to white. The head is buff and mostly unstreaked, and the back is black edged with buff. In flight, the Ruff shows a white 'U' on its tail, separating a dark rump and dark tail-tip.
In fresh water, Ruffs are often seen wading up to their bellies, but in salt water they usually stay above the shoreline, in habitat similar to that used by Pectoral Sandpipers. They walk or run at a steady pace, with their heads up, picking food from the substrate. They also sometimes probe in the mud and walk slowly through vegetation with their heads down.
Habitat
Ruffs breed in sub-Arctic and Arctic tundra meadows in northern Europe and Siberia. They winter primarily in similar open, wetland habitats in southern Europe and Africa, and to a lesser degree in southern Asia and Australia. During migration, they can be found in these habitats as well as coastal ponds, lagoons, estuaries, and mudflats. These coastal wetlands are the Washington habitats where Ruffs are most likely to be spotted.

These artworks were created during a week long visit to work with Mrs. Nadine Fisher (art teacher) and her students at St. Mary’s and Rossville Elementary School from Monday February 6 thru Friday February 10, 2012. In total 550 students had and opportunity to participate from grades K thru 6th.

Kansas students create art for Dream Rocket Project, The Associated Press
Art created by Kansas students will be among those wrapped around a 365-foot replica of the Saturn V rocket at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Ala. A visiting assistant professor at Washburn University helped elementary students from Rossville and St. Mary create 550 pieces of artwork for the Dream Rocket Project. A news release from the Topeka university says the Saturn V rocket will be wrapped with more than 8,000 pieces of art in 2014. Beforehand, all submissions are being displayed in venues such as libraries, schools and museums. A show is planned at the Wamego Public Library in April.

My wife Ginger had to fight with this disease a few years ago and I thank God she won her battle. Now her sister Barbara is fighting with it. She is, as always, in our thoughts and prayers as she deals with any fears and unknowns. She knows God is with her so she's facing it with all the strength He gives her.
I'll be in the Komen Houston Race for the Cure® (Team Live, Love Pink) tomorrow to show support for them both and for all women who have to deal with this terrible disease.

Materials and Techniques Used: The Amelia Island Quilt Guild partnered with the Miller Freedom Boys and Girls Club of Nassau County, FL to create panels for the Dream Rocket. The guild supplied 12.5 inch blocks which were sewn together into panels. The Boys and Girls Club summer campers created artwork using fabric markers, paint, stencils, etc. The artwork reflects the camper’s dreams and represents the mission of the Boys and Girls Club, “To inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.”

Eishtec, the Waterford based customer contact solutions provider, announced today that it is to create 250 new jobs by October 2013 as part of a major expansion via a new custom built facility in Drinagh, Co. Wexford. The event paid tribute to French poet Alfred Jarry, the founder of ‘Pataphysics, who inspired the Dada and Surrealist movements. Many of us read quotes from Jarry and his legendary character, the grotesque Père Ubu. On our makeshift stage, Dr. Fabio (a.k.a Fabrice Florin) and the Queen of the Desert (a.k.a. Priscilla Wheeler) re-enacted Ubu's mad quest for power, comparing it to Donald Trump’s own descent into darkness -- in both French and English. Thanks to all of you who booed, chanted and cheered along with us!
Many of our artist friends from Burning Man and Grateful Dead movements joined our celebration — including luminaries like artist David Best, musician David Gans and many more creative minds. Tip of the hat to our pals to Dr. Rindbrain (a.k.a. Howard Rheingold) for punctuating our performances with his magical drum, Dr. Tout d'Suite (a.k.a. Janey Fritsche) and Dr. Skidz (a.k.a. Marshall Smith) for contributing their fine paintings, to Dr. Helvetica (a.k.a. Kathy Lassen-Hahne), Dr. JudyJudy (Judy Rheingold) and Tory Farms for serving such delicious treats, to Dr. Figurine for bringing her paper bag masks — and to everyone who helped make this community event such a success!
Our experimental event demonstrated how the Golden Gate's military fortifications can be turned into incredible art and theatrical spaces! They're already filled with fantastic graffiti art, and can be quickly repurposed with original paintings, performance art and interactive exhibits to create an experience that’s truly out of this world. We may host more events like these in these exceptional settings.
