The pages are spattered and have turned color with age - but out of the one hundred cookbooks I have in my collection, this one is still a favorite. Notes have been added to the recipe page by my daughters and myself - and it is still used every Thanksgiving.
Amish recipes are usually; "plain and simple." There is no need for exotic ingredients, and that's exactly what Doc and I prefer.
(I bought this book in 1966, while visiting Pennsylvania Amish country. It's an oldie - but a goodie.)
Here’s the cookbook I’ve been using and a shot of the finished Tuscan Bean Soup. I got the book on Amazon for about $22. My best advice is follow the recipes....add all the spices and quantities listed.....this strictness allows for the best flavors on your plate. I also prep all my ingredients ahead of time. This saves so much time at the execution stage.
Tonight’s dinner is Vegetable Paella.

Antique illustrations from our own 1923 edition of Mrs. Beeton's Household Management or Mrs. Beeton Cookery book edited by Isabella Beeton. This book was known as "an extensive guide to running a household in Victorian Britain" that described the arts of making and keeping a comfortable home. This book was a fruitful source for household chores and cookery. The mouthwatering illustrations of delicious food and tasty pastries were designed by skillful artists. We have digitally enhanced these plates into high resolution printable quality. They are free to download under the CC0 license. Decided to have a little fun with a christmas present from my fiancé's cousin. In addition to be embarrassingly funny, it actually has some pretty fantastic recipes. Bon Appétit!
All this artisticness didn't just show up one day...well maybe it did if we were born with it. For me, there was also some inspiration. Not exactly the kind you would find in a cookbook, either. When I had a good example such as my Mom, who was the most amazing cook, it was all I could do to want to learn how, too.
So one day, I asked her if she would teach me how to cook. She said she would and handed me a cookbook. As she handed me the book, she said, "Here...if you can read you can cook".
She gave me all the cookbooks in this picture...guess which one she gave me that day? And can you tell which one I have used the most over the years? It's the same one.
Most of her recipes never came from a cookbook. They came from her heart. There are no duplications. I hope my Mom has a great day today because it is her birthday :-)))

One of the best salads in my Disney World cookbook is "Cinderella Salad"...doesn't my new cinderella garland look cute holding the ingredients ? : D From Daddy(found at yard sale for 50 cents!)
I made Mohawk Baked Beans from the “Blue Zones American Kitchen” cookbook which touts “100 Recipes to Live to 100”. I had to soak 2 lbs. of cranberry beans overnight, then simmer for 1.5 hours, then bake in a very low oven for up to 8 hours. They look nothing like the photograph, more like refried beans - mostly mushy with very few whole beans. The flavor was a bit bland, so if I make them again I’ll be looking for add-ins to make them more flavorful. I have so many left.overs, some of which will go into the freezer. my mother died long ago, but she had a cookbook that I used from when I was a little girl until I got married.
mom and my dad probably got married in the late 30's. her cookbook was published 1942.
when I got married I got my own cookbook, a newer version of the same one.
my sister took my mother's, but last year I ran into an one like my mother's in an antique store.
now I have hers, too.

**I am slip-sliding into 2015. yesterday when I shot this, in tight quarters, I tripped on the heater cord and fell head first into the bookcase. I got a dent in my head.
today after watering and fertilizing in the greenhouse, I tripped on the hose and fell out the door and landed on the wood step. I have a big strawberry mark on my knee.
getting older and older is hell.
