The 360 controller is a streamlined evolution of the XBox S controller. Gone are White and Black, having morphed into the shoulder buttons “LB” and “RB”. “Back” and “Start” have moved to the center of the controller, where they belong, the slots for memory cards are thankfully gone, and there is now a system button, which acts as a power button or brings up the system menu. I also want to point out how much I like the battery handling on the wireless controllers for the 360. When the battery gets low, the controller lights start to noticeably flash, more and more frequently. To charge, just connect the cable and keep playing. If you don’t connect in time and the battery does die, then the game will immediately freeze until you connect the charger or change the batteries, and it will remain frozen until you explicitly resume the game. Some games will even pause themselves. This stands in contrast to the Wii, where the batteries just die and so do you, because the game didn’t stop.

Here we have the controllers and the game cartridge. Why Tetris you ask? I just have always really liked the game. I think it’s the simplicity of the gameplay coupled with the puzzle challenge. It’s almost like a LEGO speed build where you get tossed pieces in a specific order. Hmmm…maybe an idea for a new build contest at a convention!

The grey box to the left contains a big black transformer and a white motor controller also known as a variable frequency drive (VFD) or inverter.

 

The vacuum pump needs 3-phase power to run, but if we connect it to the only feed we have in the space, no one else could use the welder or the band saw. So what we did was rig this up to take regular 110 volt, single phase power, step it up to 220 volts using the transformer, then send it to the VFD. The VFD, or inverter as it's sometimes called, converts the 220 volt AC single phase into DC and then back into AC current. As it does this, it generate 3-phase power and also modifies the duty cycle of the power we send the motor so we can control it to run at 10% speed, 20% speed, 80%, 100%, etc. It also acts as a 'reduced voltage starter' which means it slowly speeds the motor up instead of banging it on all at once (a phenomenon known as inrush current) which draws more amps than it normally uses when it's up to speed and occasionally can trip circuit breakers or damage electrical parts.

I got this off Amazon and my hands were quickly covered in glue off the back of the strip that wouldn't come off with soap and water, nail varnish remover, citrus cleaner or kitchen cleaner! Won't buy this again!
