Among the bird world’s most skillful fliers, Cooper’s Hawks are common woodland hawks that tear through cluttered tree canopies in high speed pursuit of other birds. You’re most likely to see one prowling above a forest edge or field using just a few stiff wingbeats followed by a glide. (Cornell).

Zero Image 2000

Arista 400 Ultra 2 second exposure

First images with a new camera and type of photography. Constructive criticism welcome.

We were invited by priests to visit Koyasan, the birthplace of the Shingon lineage of Buddhism in Japan. We stayed overnight at a temple. Highlights of the visit were walking at night along the Okunoin Cemetery to the mausoleum of Kukai, the founder of Shingon, and participating in a Goma Ritual.

The Goma Ritual of consecrated fire is unique to Esoteric Buddhism, which is part of the Shingon sect in Japan. The ceremony is performed with the purpose of destroying negative energies and detrimental thoughts and desires. In the ceremony, a priest burns wooden sticks in the scared fire. The fire symbolizes the wisdom of the Buddha and the wood sticks symbolize what is to be cleansed and released. The constant beating of the taiko drums and chanting together with the visuals of the ceremony can create a trance-like state and have a deep and profound effect on the participants.

I processed a realistic and a soft HDR photo from a RAW exposure, blended them, carefully adjusted the color balance and curves, and desaturated the image. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.

As I stood leaning against the barrier walls, I couldn't help but notice her walking past me. With a burst of courage, I stopped her with a simple "hi", and to my surprise, she stopped to chat. We struck up a conversation, and I asked her if she would be interested in joining the project. Much to my delight, she agreed, and we set off towards the nearby Hyde Park for a photo shoot. Despite the outdoor conditions being manageable, her cooperation and enthusiasm made the experience even better. We laughed and joked throughout the shoot, and it became yet another memorable stranger encounter to add to my list. Overall, it was an incredible experience and a reminder of the beauty of connecting with new people.

Funny story about this shot. This was taken out in New Jersey. I originally was going to take the shot standing on the rocks, closer to the fisherman. While i was on the rocks setting up my tripod, a humongous rat climbed out from between the rocks. So, this was taken while standing on the beach. I hate rats, LOL!

How

3 exposures, -2, 0, and +2 using a Nikon D300 w/ Sigma 10-20mm Wide Angle

Process

Photomatix Pro for tonemapping

Photoshop CS4, made duplicate layer from original, adjusted Levels, adjusted Curves, adjusted Hue/Saturation, and used Unsharp Mask to sharpen a tad.
