Altered construction work sign. The sign is all bent out of shape, so it was difficult to get a clean shot.........hehehehe!

Arrived few years ago or only few months ago, they all converge to Satwa to find a place where to live, une maison, as it is the cheapest area of Dubai.

As you can see from my photographs work has resumed on the multi-million Greystones harbour and marina development project, with the first of more than 350 new homes expected to be offered for sale by April 2016. Because of the weather I did not photograph the new houses. The project has already seen the old Victorian era harbour replaced by a new structure with south and north piers, a large marina and ongoing work on five new clubhouses for sea scouts, divers, sailors, rowers and anglers. Also included in the project is a coastguard station, a new town square, a 16-acre public park, a new beach and marine-related shops and leisure facilities. It should be interesting to see if the ‘Public Areas’ are truly public and if the remain so for more than a year or two … I say this because there are many signs indicating that Fishing, Swimming or Jumping was not allowed. I will visit again later in the year, assuming that the weather improves.

The dismantling of the Art Nouveau train shed (and of the terminus station) is on its way. Both will soon be replaced with new structures which will look pretty much like the old ones.

This is part of a huge renovation project which started in 1995. The complete infrastructure of the 13.3 km long monorail line had to be replaced after 100 years of service. About 95% of this undertaking have already been finished. As of July 2012 the dismantling and reconstruction of the eastern terminus of the line has begun. This includes the renewal of the train shed with the storage sidings. The shed will be replaced by a modern construction which will be designed more or less in the traditional style. It will be much longer than the existing hall.

I could be wrong but this is/was locally known as the Long Stone. If you search for the “Long Stone” in Google it is most likely that you will find information relating to a local pub rather than this sculpture

The Steine structure was erected in 1986 and was sculpted by Cliodhna Cussen. It was removed for a few years because of construction works associated with the new Luas cross-city tram service. The original installation included a granite inscribed plaque and a bronze plaque on a circular shaft set into granite setts arranged in eight circular bands around the principal granite shaft. The last time I photographed this the bronze plate was missing but the granite setts are still missing.

The stone is erected on a site near which stood a famous Long Stone or Steine / Steyne standing 12-14 feet high and erected by the Viking inhabitants of Dublin in the 10th or 11th centuries.

The River Liffey was much broader then and the stone actually stood close to the shoreline and perhaps marked a landing place.

The 3.35m high granite shaft is carved with two faces, one of which represents Ivor the first Viking King of Dublin who ruled in the 9th century. The other face is that of a nun and commemorates the convent of St. Mary Hogges, which stood nearby in the middle ages.

Here is a photo I took of the ANZAC bridge in Sydney NSW Australia. If you zoom up on the photo you can see the traffic starting to build up.

This station is not yet in service. (The trains pass it without stopping). When it's finished the large renewal project of Wuppertal's unique suspension monorail will (almost) be done.

The new station "Werther Brücke" resembles the original one very closely.

Sacks on the Spree

Right on the corner between Schlossbrücke and Schinkelplatz - opposite the Stadtschloss construction site - 126 white sacks lie in the water, some even sticking out. They are each filled with up to 2.4 tonnes of sand. The sacks are part of the construction work for the extension of underground line 5 and serve as ballast for the Kupfergraben. The huge tunnel boring machine "Bärlinde" will soon be in operation underneath the trench, digging an underground shaft. The distance between the tunnel ceiling and the river bed will be just 6.30 metres. And to ensure that the floor of the Kupfergraben is not raised during the construction work, a supporting pressure with a total counterweight of 233 tonnes must be created.

September 2015 nennen. Mal sehen was dann stimmt!

This is what parts of Parnell street looks like today [13 October 2017]

I live in Henrietta Place and the whole area has been a large building site for many years and at times the impact has been extreme mainly because of the Luas Cross-City Tram Project but there have been a number of other projects and programmes including the new museum in Henrietta Street [the building site was directly outside my bedroom] and the Grangegorman College Campus project. I have just discovered that a new hotel is planned for Bolton street and there may be a new apartment block at Henrietta Place.
