A wild riot of colour as thousands celebrate London's Gay Pride Parade 2011. London 02.07.2011

This Saturday July 2nd 2011 saw the explosion of colour and fabulous carnival/cabaret fancy-dress which is the annual Gay Pride parade passing through the packed London streets as many Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender groups representing special interest campaigning groups, trade unions, the armed forces, police service, christian groups and several of London's gay bars and clubs celebrated their sexuality and diversity, watched and cheered on by tens of thousands of enthusiastic members of the public.

The days celebrations were purposefully snubbed by London mayor Boris Johnson much to the anger and irritation of many, since Mr. Johnson is expected to show support for all Londoners. However, his greatest opponent in the upcoming mayoral elections, former London Mayor Ken Livingstone was to be seen - as always - at the head of the parade, accompanied by human and gay rights activist Peter Tatchell.

Gone was the nervous tension of the original trail-blazing Gay Pride marches of the late 1970's and early 80's, as a new generation of gay people enjoy far greater public acceptance of their lifestyle in what feel like more enlightened times. What is taken for granted now was fought for in the past by courageous activists and their political supporters who wanted to see an end to the homophobic bigotry and institutionalised discrimination which used to be the universal public position towards them.

Having said that, there was a demonstration set up at the bottom of Waterloo Place by a group of so-called Christians from the Baptist Church - some of whom looked like they had been time-warped directly from the 1950's, complete with emotional constipation - who spent the entire afternoon insulting and demeaning all gay people and anyone who accepts homosexuality as a part of the enormously wide spectrum of human sexuality by cherry-picking snippets from the Bible completely without proper context, and generally showing themselves up to be nothing more than a bunch of hate-filled bigots who hilariously claim to love the people they were standing there belittling.

My photos of the Baptists and the crowd's reactions to being assaulted by the pious abuse are already uploaded in my set "Baptists preach intolerance at Gay Pride Parade".

After the parade made its way from Portland Place to Trafalgar Square, the marchers and bystanders alike dispersed into Soho for some serious street partying which lasted late into the night. There was a main stage in Trafalgar Square which hosted a long rosta of minor-league pop and dance acts during the afternoon, though oddly this year there were no big-name headliners, and another Dance Stage in Soho Square which featured a great line-up of club DJs.

It's a beautiful day at the local Star Wars Convention. Unfortunately there are problems with the plumbing in the Convention Center where it's being held that have forced the staff to close the bathrooms. In order to cope with this minor crisis, a Porta Potty has been installed in the parking lot which has been decorated by the convention organizers to fit in with the Star Wars theme.

Quite a crowd of costumed fans have gathered in line around the Porta Potty and tempers are beginning to flare...

Guy in the Vader suit: By the Dark Gods of the Sith! How long has that guy been in there? Is this line ever going to move?

Postpartum physical therapy can be a great way to restore function and strength in your core and pelvic floor muscles. Giving birth places a strain on your body and it is no surprise that many postpartum people experience pelvic pain and discomfort for weeks to months after delivery. Even after the typical 8 week recovery time, many women may require more time or a pelvic floor workout plan to help get them back on their feet, especially women who delivered via C-section.

Although you may never look how you did before your pregnancy, physical therapy post pregnancy can help relieve symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse, diastasis recti, and other postpartum symptoms.

Physical Therapy After Pregnancy

Physical therapy for pregnancy and after pregnancy can help strengthen and restore pelvic floor muscle and joint function, increase body awareness, and also provide education and instruction on how to modify your daily activities to serve you in your recovery. Some of the primary physical therapy options available include:

Pelvic girdle and lumbar spine realignment

Prenatal tissue and joint mobilization

Postpartum external and internal tissue, joint, scar, and visceral movement therapy

Strength training for pelvic floor muscles

Pelvic floor stabilization and core strength exercises

Proper posture, postural strengthening for back pain

Diastasis recti rehabilitation

Body mechanics training and education

At home strategies and education for self-care

How Do You Know if You Need Pelvic Floor Therapy?

The two most common conditions many postpartum people face are diastasis recti and pelvic organ prolapse. Pregnancy and delivery create an imbalance of muscles and ligament tension. This can leave the pelvic floor and abdominals unsupported potentially leading to prolapse or DRA. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you may need to consider physical therapy or movement therapy:

Constipation

Urinary incontinence

Fecal incontinence

Pain during intercourse

Vaginal pain

Rectal pain

Low back pain

Pelvic pain

Diastasis Recti – separation of the abdominal muscles

Pelvic organ prolapse

Pubic bone pain

Pelvic girdle pain

A physical therapist can help you recover from many of these symptoms with the education and therapy options mentioned above. If your physical therapist is specially trained to treat pelvic floor issues, they can help significantly reduce the painful symptoms you may be experiencing while also strengthening your core and pelvic floor muscles.

What Helps with Postpartum Pain?

Physical therapy can be a great way to help women recover from postpartum issues. However, not all exercise routines or core training workouts are created equal. Restoring your body’s function is not something to do quickly or forcefully. Exercise is important, but resting and pacing yourself are far more vital to your recovery than rushing it. Postpartum recovery requires a specific re-training of your body to regain strength and integrity. Long-term functionality is better than getting slim fast.

Exercise

As you begin to exercise postpartum, it is important that your focus be on the major muscle groups affected by your delivery. Short spurts of slow, simple stretches and yoga poses are a great place to begin. Shoot for around 10 to 20 minutes a day of light exercise and stretching. Many exercises can be done during your recovery, but it’s important that you don’t overexert yourself before the 8 week mark is up (and for some women, even longer). As you continue to regain strength and functionality, you can gradually increase your workout time and intensity.

Rest

If I could have a dollar for every person who wished they had rested more in order to spare themselves injury. Rest is so important for healing your body postpartum and ensuring that you do not damage your core and your pelvic floor. We recommend getting back into exercise at least 8 weeks postpartum, but even then, easing into it is key. The “I want to get my body back” sentiment can be very harmful to a recovering body.

What’s the Best Pelvic Floor Exercise?

There is no one exercise that tops all of the others when treating your pelvic floor. However, one of the most important techniques you can implement in your recovery and in your physical therapy is breathing.

Breathing properly is one of the most beneficial techniques I teach my clients in RYC. This pattern of breathing uses ribcage expansion instead of belly expansion for an effective and efficient strategy in restoring pelvic floor function. breathing mechanics are the most important element to any exercise routine. Many people don’t realize that the way they breathe can greatly affect the effectiveness of their regimen. In some cases, improper breathing mechanics can cause a lot of physical harm. Upper lung and rib cage breathing can reduce DRA expansion, pelvic tension, and lower back pain.

What Exercises are Bad for Pelvic Floor?

There are many exercises that can be damaging to your healing body. While in recovery (for at least the first 6 months) avoid strenuous abdominal exercises that apply unnecessary pressure on your belly and midline (i.e. sit-ups, planks, crunches, squats, etc). It is also important that you avoid heavy lifting or twisting in ways that may affect your abdominal wall (i.e. oblique curls, roll-ups).

If yoga is a part of your physical therapy routine, try to avoid yoga poses such as backbends and other spinal extensions as they too increase intra-abdominal pressure.

Diastasis recti is a common condition that can occur during pregnancy and even extend postpartum. DR affects women and men in different ways and during different stages of their lives.

Pregnancy puts a lot of pressure and stress on the core musculature of the abdominal wall. A diastasis recti most commonly occurs due to extended, focalized pressure upon the abdominal wall which weakens the structural integrity of your rectus abdominis muscles (6-pack).This can prevent the muscles from maintaining their shape and, postpartum, you may discover that there is a gap in between your abdominal muscles.

This gap typically creates a slight or significant bulge in the center of your abdomen: a belly “pooch,” as many call it. This gap and bulge can result in a host of varying symptoms. These may range from back/pelvic pain, poor posture, incontinence, pain with intercourse, constipation, bloating, and more significantly a weakening of your stomach muscles and pelvic floor.

There are, however, many ways to help lower the risk of developing a diastasis recti during or after your pregnancy. Although you can’t change the pressure within your abdomen – you’re pregnant – there are a few things you can change. Having a regiment that focuses on good posture, functional moving in daily activity, strengthening your transverse abdominis (your lower abs) and pelvic floor, and eliminating movements and exercises that may make it worse helps lower the risk of a diastasis and aids in postpartum rehab.

Rectus Abdominis Separation is Natural

During pregnancy, the abdominal wall will stretch and separate. Rectus abdominis separation that does not correct on its own (postpartum) is called diastasis recti. 70%-100% of all women will experience abdominal muscle separation during their pregnancy and roughly ⅔ of all pregnant women will have developed diastasis recti postpartum.

Although the muscles tend to return to their natural state, some studies have shown that some women with diastasis recti struggle to close their gap a year postpartum.

When the abdominals separate like this, the uterus, bowels, and other organs have only a thin band of connective tissue (the linea alba) to hold them in place. Although the muscles tend to return to their natural state, some studies have shown that some women with diastasis recti struggle to close their gap a year postpartum. However, there are many things you can do to help prevent and restore your body from diastasis recti.

Dos and Don’ts

During your pregnancy there are many things that you should try to practice and others that you should try to avoid. While carrying your little one, whether it is your first time or your fourth, here are a few things to do and not do.

Dos

Be Careful with Exercise:

We highly encourage exercise and stretching during your pregnancy. However, it is important that you are careful with how you approach various exercise routines while pregnant. Exercises like: crunches, sit-ups, pushups, press-ups, and front planks, can make abdominal separation worse. Talk to a specialist or consider looking at My program for women: One Strong Mama.

Strengthen Your Transverse Abdominis Muscles:

This can be done through proper breathing techniques. Your transverse abdominal muscles help hold your baby in place and assist you in a vaginal delivery. To learn more about exercises to aid you, click here.

Correct Your Posture:

Having good posture greatly aids you in limiting the amount of pressure and tension you add to your core during everyday tasks or even while sitting. As you move daily –whether exercising or at work – you will want to practice working functionally with your diastasis recti. Anytime you bend, lift, twist, etc. think about tightening your transverse abdominis muscles. This reduces the strain your child’s added weight places on your linea alba and can also help reduce back and pelvic pain.

Stretch:

This may go without saying, but as you are moving about and taking on your daily tasks, your muscles will inevitably be strained, sore, or tired at the end of your day. Stretching appropriately and safely can help keep your body functional and reduce and muscles strains or soreness you may be experiencing.

Don’ts

Strain Yourself:

While lifting heavy objects be sure to implement correct posture and be mindful of your core. You should avoid doing any exercises or activities that may negatively strain your core. This can involve the way in which you stand or sit, your bowel movements, and/or any exercises that would normally be okay. Especially when getting out of bed. Try to roll onto your side when rising from a laying down position in order to take the strain off of your linea alba.

Exercises That Add Tension to Your Core Muscles:

Many exercises to avoid during your pregnancy include exercises such as:loaded spinal flexion (crunches), sit-ups, and push-ups. A lot of exercises that are high intensity are likely best avoided as well.

Exercises to Avoid

There are several daily motions and exercises that someone with diastasis recti should avoid. If you have diastasis recti or abdominal separation, you want to avoid adding any additional pressure to your midline. A few exercises of motions to avoid if you have diastasis rect

Most Crunches or Sit-Ups

Full Push Ups (they can strain the abdominal muscles)

Any exercises that could cause your core wall to bulge.

Helpful Diastasis Recti Care Tips

There are many sites and programs that offer many helpful tips and tricks for you as you walk through your pregnancy. On our homepage we offer many varying programs, like One Strong Mama, and exercises tips for you to consider during your pregnancy and postpartum. Below is a taste of what those programs have to offer.

During Pregnancy

Prehab

One of the best things you can do during pregnancy is prehab. I have many long term clients who were able to prevent their diastasis recti from returning with subsequent pregnancies by working their core in a smart, functional way the entirety of their pregnancy. Many report that their core felt stronger than ever with the prehab work that they did. Pregnancy is not an illness, there is no need to halt all exercise. We do, however, want to make good exercise choices. It is very important to exercise your core during pregnancy but not to increase intra ab pressure as you do so.

Our online prehab program, One Strong Mama, is designed to prepare your body for the unique demands of pregnancy, birth, and recovery. Everything you need to prepare your body can be found in this program which combines functional exercise, strength training, posture and alignment instruction, and even key educational tools so that you are given a chance to enjoy your pregnancy without stressing over it.

Postpartum

Diastasis recti is often more apparent postpartum. I usually recommend waiting at least 6 to 12 weeks before checking for a diastasis recti. Here are a few tips that can help prevent and/or heal a diastasis recti.

Rest

If I could have a dollar for every mom who wished she had rested more in order to spare herself injury. Rest is so important for healing your body postpartum and ensuring that you do not damage your core and your pelvic floor. We recommend getting back into exercise at least 6 weeks postpartum, but even then, easing into it is key. The “I want to get my body back” sentiment can be very harmful to a recovering body.

Exercise/Rehab

Once you are cleared for exercise by your medical professional, you want to focus on core building exercises which properly strengthen your core without aiding in diastasis recti development. My program Restore Your Core is designed for any woman with core issues such as: postpartum issues, diastasis recti, incontinence, and constant back pain.

Restore Your Core is designed so that you can use helpful and intelligent core building strategies not only during exercise, but in everyday motion. I help you approach healing and restoring your body in a personal way. I challenge you to train your whole body to move correctly in order to get you stronger and heal properly.

If you have diastasis recti, avoid flat belly programs and focus on function over form. The purpose of these exercises is to strengthen and rebuild your core. Find comfortable movements that prevent your stomach from pushing out and practice proper breathing techniques. The goal is for healing and function–not aesthetics.

Italian Prune Plums are also known as Sugar Plums or Empress Plums (prunus Domestica). More oval-shaped than Satsuma or Damson, they have a deep, purply skin with golden flesh and a freestone pit inside. These wonderfully sweet plums are perfect for baking or cooking (try them in a kuchen pastry or tart), and, as their name indicates, they're also great for drying. Store ripe sugar plums, unwashed, in the fridge.

Prune juice is made by softening these plumss through steaming and then putting them through a pulper to create a watery puree. Prunes and their "juice" contain the natural laxative dihydrophenylisatin. Faster results are obtained by heating the prune juice. Prunes also contain dietary fiber (about 6%, or 0.06 g per gram of prune). Prunes and prune juice are thus common home remedies for constipation. Prunes also have a high antioxidant content.

I made a tart with these plums.

9 April 2013. The collection of "temporary" stalls (see first photo below) has now been removed.

This follows legal action by Network Rail, which owns the station buildings including the forecourt adjoining High Road, Tottenham.

But a large amount of waste still remains on site.

(Please scroll down to the page.)

Several years ago the station was restored and the arches under the station were used for small businesses. Eventually the whole forecourt was filled with DIY structures.

When people talk about old buildings they often use the platitude: "bringing it back to its former glory" But there is nothing particularly glorious about this station. It's simply Victorian and old.

But elsewhere, solid sound old structures are made a little glorious by skilled and imaginative architects and engineers. They value, restore and enhance the old by matching it cleverly with the new. Often using modern materials and technology.

I've always hoped that something like this could be achieved with Bruce Grove Station.

It's hard to believe, sometimes, that I have had the benefit of Ori's company now for nearly twenty years. He was born in the Spring of 1993 and I brought him and his sister home with me, each secured in the palm of one hand, since both refused to have anything to do with the cardboard box that had been provided for transporting purposes by the human contingent of their mother's family, in the late Summer of that same year.

He is not, now, a well cat. He was left prostrate on the living room mat unwilling to either eat or drink, having recently brought back up anything he had tried to consume. Various veterinary visits resulted in a diagnosis of liver failure and acute constipation requiring that an urgent course of treatment be embarked upon. This involved subcutaneous fluids, vitamins, something to help his liver recover some functionality and the administration of a laxative paste.

At first he was too weak to resist much and his treatments did not involve much stress or take very long. I am happy to be able to say that this is no longer the case and he has recovered much of his original stubbornness (see photos passim) and refuses to co-operate even with people who have his best interests at heart. Just as it was twenty years ago, when only one kitten at a time could be deposited in a certain cardboard box, he is being absolutely no help at all. Mrs Eepinho, a hero who puts up with no end of hassle from both of her household males, reports that his latest visit resulted in the vet giving up on putting the paste inside his mouth and instead smearing it on his face in the confident knowledge that he would "clean it off himself" and thus be outdone by his own instincts. This vet is going to get a surprise on his next visit when she discovers his essential medicine stuck in his fur and whiskers.

The hardest thing I've ever tried shooting is a fishes anus!

(Bare with me!)

The betta looked a little swollen when I got him, probable reasons it could be are;

Constipation, this is common as they are normally only fed a flake mix and not insects etc. (typical frozen foods)

The second is intestinal worms, also quite common. Here we have camallanus infecting the betta, it is easy to diagnose as you have red/brownish bristles protruding from the anal vent.

After confirming worms I phoned the dealer, as the course of treatment will finish outside of the 7 day guarantee and I didn't want to replace this fish they've allowed an extension on their policy in this case.

If the fish dies and my water tests are clear, I will get a replacement. (I said the fish is better off here with me, & that was that!)

Your pelvis is vital to supporting your spine and your entire body. At times, the pelvic floor may become overactive or hypertonic. When this happens, the muscles may be overly tight or tense when they should be relaxed. learning to relax and release the correct muscles in your pelvic floor (contracting the muscles as shortly as you would by bulging your bicep – or a long contraction as you would stretching out the bicep). If you have an overactive pelvic floor, you may experience symptoms such as: back pain, painful intercourse, a feeling of heaviness in your pelvic floor muscles, or incontinence.

What Causes a Weak Pelvic Floor?

The most common causes of a weakened pelvic floor usually include:

Pregnancy

Childbirth

Prostate cancer (in males)

Constipation (strain and forceful pushing during bowel movements)

If your pelvic floor muscles are weakened, your body may begin experiencing a lack of support and alignment. Exercises can help strengthen your pelvic floor muscles and restore the proper support and alignment your body requires to function properly. They may also help alleviate pain and other symptoms you may be facing.

How to Strengthen Your Pelvic Floor Muscles

Find Your Pelvic Floor Muscles

Education is one of the primary benefits that we at RYC offer in our programs. Understanding where your pelvic floor muscles are located and how they affect your body can help benefit your recovery. In my program, I help men and women learn more about how their bodies work and how to properly engage and exercise their pelvic floor muscles.

Pelvic Floor Exercises

Exercise can be a great way to heal your pelvic floor. Unfortunately, in many work out programs for postpartum people and others seeking pelvic floor recovery, kegel exercises are the most commonly recommended exercise to use. However, kegel exercises can actually increase stiffness and make it harder to feel your pelvic floor muscles. Avoiding unnecessary contraction during pelvic floor exercises can be beneficial to recovering the strength and mobility of your pelvic floor muscles.

If we want things to shift in our pelvic floor, we need to also shift the habit mode of our muscles. In the case of our pelvic floors, there tends to be much confusion. Is my pelvic floor too tight? Not tight enough? How can I tell the resting tension? How can I fix it? Before we set out to resolve/fix our pelvic floor dysfunction we need to first “know” our pelvic floor. Know what engaging it feels like, what releasing it feels like, and how to control both contracting and releasing it. Only then we can discern what our tendencies are and create new movement patterns and choices.

Pelvic Floor Exercises: Stretching

Below are a few pelvic floor exercises I cover in my program at RYC. These exercises may help you begin to feel the way your muscles work and go way beyond kegel exercises.

Supine Pelvic Floor Stretch:

Lying on your back, keep your knees bent and bring them toward your chest. Slowly extend your knees to the side to stretch the inner groin. Relax your pelvic floor and butt. Hold this position for 5 to 10 breaths and relax.

Supported Slight Backbend Pelvic Stretch:

This is a fantastic pelvic stretcher. Using a pillow or bolster of some kind, gently lower your back to rest on top of the pillow. Once in position, slowly bring your feet together so the soles of your feet are touching. Keep your knees bent, but gently allow them to open sideways. If you feel any discomfort at all in your back or inner thighs, you can use pillows for further support or get rid of the bolster. Hold for 30 seconds or more (roughly 15 to 20 breaths) and relax.

Supported Pelvic Squat:

This stretch is an incredible hip and pelvis stretch. Grab a low stool or a stack of books and with your feet spread wide and toes pointed out sideways, gradually extend your buttocks and lower yourself to the blocks. If you are struggling to balance yourself, it may be helpful to use a wall for back support. It is important that if you experience any discomfort during these stretches that you reposition yourself until you can firmly plant your feet and bend without pain. Hold this squatted position for close to 30 seconds (5-10 deep breaths), stand back up, relax, and repeat several times. Please note, that for some people with prolapse – a deep squat can really irritate and aggravate things due to bearing down, so be sure to only do this one if you feel comfortable that you are not bearing down in a low squat.

How Long Does it Take to Strengthen the Pelvic Floor?

We want to train the pelvic muscles to respond to our actions, exercises and movements. Just tightening it in a shortening contraction is not going to get us there. So… how do we make sure our pelvic muscles are functioning correctly?

Pelvic floor muscle alignment is the first step. Our pelvic floor muscles attach to our pelvis. The positioning of our pelvis affects the tone and length of the pelvic floor. If we are tucked under in the pelvis all the time, the muscles will be held in a more shortened position. Loading them will be very hard. Hence, the alignment awareness step to all of this work.

Next, we need to make sure that there is no chronic holding, tight, tension or hypertonic pattern and if there is, we need to break that pattern using re-patterning exercises (kegel-like ones that are not just squeeze oriented) and often that includes internal work with a woman’s health physical therapist.

We ensure that the pelvis is in optimal alignment. We ensure that the pelvic floor muscle is not held in a tension pattern via re-patterning work. Then, we learn to engage the core correctly. The exercise protocol is to move from simple lightly loaded moves to more complex and challenging moves. If we want to run a marathon, we train for it. The same thing applies here, we need to re-educate our muscles and that process includes progressive training.

Medicinally, early Hawaiians used the juice of uluhe as a laxative for constipation.

In three years living in Barcelona I personally witnessed around 100 crimes (bag snatching and pickpocketing) or the aftermaths (thieves running away with a bag or wallet or victims running after someone who’d nicked these).

Given the sheer number of incidences of pickpocketing in Barcelona, I prepared this decoy wallet with the aim of being stolen.

Disappointingly the wallet was not nicked, although I gave the ladrones ample opportunity, the surest ways to get robbed here; intentionally not paying attention to Barcelona’s three “Don’ts”: Carrying it in my unbuttoned back pocket, in the see-through unzipped mesh part of my knapsack, even going as far as putting it on the table while drinking wine and not looking at it.

The contents are a work in progress and I’m open to other suggestions of items to add to the wallet.

These currently include:

1.Two banknotes, 1,000,000,000,000 and 5,000,000 in currency from the former Yugoslavia.

2.A scarlet letter “T” for “thief

3.As the majority of the bag snatchers and pickpockets are from Morocco and Algiers (in addition to gypsies), a print-out in Arabic of these two sentences from the Koran:

As to the thief, male or female, cut off his or her hands: a punishment by way of example, from Allah, for their crime: and Allah is Exalted in Power. Full of Wisdom.

But if the thief repent after his crime, and amend his conduct, Allah turneth to him in forgiveness; for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

4.A check for £700 (towards a subscription to a beer magazine)

5.A few eucalyptus leaves (they might assume it’s a drug)

6.Fake passport number/name, paypal, bank account information with PIN numbers and a nonsense secret question

7.A 60s advert for a constipation medication

8.An artist’s work showing a face and an a**hole

Please do feel free to make any suggestions. I’ll be taking the wallet to naples in a few months, which I hear also has a lot of street crime.
