*** Took this by chance in my home. This bug was cleaning his own antennas with his legs while I ran to reach for my gear. When I framed him he was starting to take off! I had time only to press the shutter and this crazy dude starts flying away. However, the best surprise I had accured when I uploaded this image to my computer: He was shitting over my porch rail! HAHAHA! What's the chance to happen this? I could catch a cool moment, as a lightning in the sky, a child smiling, a dog jumping...but a ugly freaking bug taking a dump all over my rail is unbelievable! LOL

I photoshopped this only to crop the image. Also used a Mini MagLite Flashlight to illuminate the nefarious insect! :-)

HAHAHA! Qual é a chance disso acontecer?

'TAKE A CLOSER LOOK! BUT HOLD YOUR BREATH! :-)

I found out why the waiting room was so crowded at my doctor's office. Some people just can't resist a bargain.

It’s common to hear that water is essential for your health. Every one of your cells, organs and tissues use water to help with temperature regulation, keeping hydrated and maintaining bodily functions. In addition, flushing out waste from your body, helping your brain function, water acts as a lubricant and cushions your joints. Drinking water is great for your overall health. According to the CDC everyone should drink water daily.

Water and Your Heart Health:

Drinking water is very good for your heart. Your heart is working continually to pump 2,000 gallons of blood throughout your body a day. By drinking water and keeping hydrated, you are helping your heart do its job. Your heart Is able to pump blood more easily when hydrated and allows the rest of the muscles in your body to work much better.

It helps create saliva:

Water is a main component of saliva. Saliva also includes small amounts of electrolytes, mucus, and enzymes. It’s essential for breaking down solid food and keeping your mouth healthy. Your body generally produces enough saliva with regular fluid intake. However, your saliva production may decrease as a result of age or certain medications or therapies.

Water and Weight Loss:

Water naturally has zero calories, therefore, substituting water for soda or juice can reduce your caloric intake. Switching out one 20 oz. sugary beverage for water reduces your caloric intake by 240 calories.

There are no recommended standards for how much plain water one should drink daily because intake varies based on age, sex, weight, and many other factors. It is recommended for an adult male over the age of 19 to consume 3.7 liters of water per day. An adult non-lactating female over the age of 19 is recommended to consume 2.7 liters of water per day. Females that are pregnant or lactating are recommended to consume 3-3.8 liters of water per day. These values include the water you get from food and other (non-water) beverages throughout your day.

It regulates your body temperature:

Staying hydrated is crucial to maintaining your body temperature. Your body loses water through sweat during physical activity and in hot environments. Your sweat keeps your body cool, but your body temperature will rise if you don’t replenish the water you lose. That’s because your body loses electrolytes and plasma when it’s dehydrated. If you’re sweating more than usual, make sure you drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.

Hydration:

Drinking water keeps you from becoming dehydrated; a condition that can cause confusion, mood change, overheating, constipation, and other symptoms. The CDC (Center for Disease Control) recommends, to decrease your risk of becoming dehydrated, that you have a drink with every meal, and drink whenever you are thirsty. An easy way to determine if you have had enough water is to check your urine. If it’s a darker yellow, you need more water. If it’s a pale yellow or clear you’re doing great.

Don’t like water? You can improve the taste of your water by adding a wedge of lemon or lime. This will help you drink more if taste has been an issue.

It protects your tissues, spinal cord, and joints:

Water consumption helps lubricate and cushion your joints, spinal cord, and tissues. This will help you enjoy physical activity and lessen discomfort caused by conditions like arthritis.

maximize physical performance:

Drinking plenty of water during physical activity is essential. Athletes may perspire up to 6 to 10 percentTrusted Source of body weight during physical activity. Hydration also affects your strength, power, and endurance. You may be more susceptible to the effects of dehydration if you’re participating in endurance training or high-intensity sports such as basketball.

Negative effects of exercise in the heat without enough water can include serious medical conditions, like decreased blood pressure and hyperthermia. Extreme dehydration can cause seizures and even death.

prevent constipation:

Eating fiber isn’t the only way to prevent constipation. It’s also important to maintain your water intake so your bowel movements contain enough water. If you don’t consume enough water, magnesium, and fiber, you may be more likely to experience constipation. If you’re already constipated, you may find that drinking carbonated waterTrusted Source as well as plain water can help ease your symptoms.

It improves blood oxygen circulation:

Water carries helpful nutrients and oxygen to your entire body. Reaching your daily water intake will improve your circulation and have a positive impact on your overall health.

It helps boost energy:

Drinking water may activate your metabolism. A boost in metabolism has been associated with a positive impact on energy level. One study found that drinking 500 milliliters of water boosted the metabolic rate by 30 percent in both men and women. These effects appeared to last over an hour.

Looking up through the cooling racks there are pumpkins, cats and bats.

Most of these are going to be for trick or treaters.

But some will be sent to my nephew who is poorly. He has such a bad diet, he won't eat fruit or veg and has ended up in hospital with severe er... digestive problems (thinking of a tactful way to put constipation!). So I wanted to send him something to make him feel a bit better both physically and emotionally. He loves my cookies so I thought I'd take stealth measures to make them a bit healthier. I experimented with my chocolate sugar cookie recipe with half the sugar I normally use, and added 1 crumbled up Weetabix (for the fibre), wholemeal flour, and whizzed up 6 apricots, 6 dates and a cup of mixed seeds (sunflower, pumpkin, linseed & sesame) into tiny pieces in the food processor, and added those too.

They taste yummy actually! I just hope my nephew will eat them without realising they're good for him...

The bend at the hepatic flexure collapses every night or traps an air bubble, preventing BMM (Big Mass Movement, the big motility that comes along every 1,5 hours) to move matter from ascending colon into traverse colon. The ascending colon swells, pain, awakening and insomnia. A fibre restricted diet, eating non-gas causing foods (FODMAP), eating early in the day and having a walk in the evening, together with rotating positions when in bed, prolong the sleep from 4,5 hours to 6 hours. Dandelion

Description

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale ) is a common meadow herb of the Asteraceae or sunflower family. There are about 100 species of dandelion, and all are beneficial. This sun-loving beauty is a native of Greece, naturalized in temperate regions throughout the world, and familiar to nearly everyone. The perennial dandelion grows freely wherever it can find a bit of earth and a place in the sun. Dandelion's nutritive and medicinal qualities have been known for centuries.

Dandelion's common name is derived from the French dent de lion, a reference to the irregular and jagged margins of the lance-shaped leaves. There are numerous folk names for this widely-used herb. They include pissabed, Irish daisy, blow ball, lion's tooth, bitterwort, wild endive, priest's crown, doonheadclock, yellow gowan, puffball, clock flower, swine snort, fortune-teller, and cankerwort. The generic name is thought to be derived from the Greek words taraxos, meaning disorder, and akos, meaning remedy. Another possible derivation is from the Persian tark hashgun, meaning wild endive, one of dandelion's common names. The specific designation officinale indicates that this herb was officially listed as a medicinal. Dandelion held a place in the United States National Formulary from 1888 until 1965, and the dried root of dandelion is listed in the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP).

Dandelion may be distinguished from other similar-looking herbs by the hollow, leafless flower stems that contain a bitter milky-white liquid also found in the root and leaves. The dark green dandelion leaves, with their irregular, deeply jagged margins, have a distinctive hairless mid-rib. The leaves are arranged in a rosette pattern, and may grow to 1.5 ft (45.7 cm) in length. They have a

Lovely magenta tint that extends up along the inner rib of the stalkless leaf. When the plant is used as a dye, it yields this purple hue. Dandelion blossoms are singular and round, with compact golden-yellow petals. They bloom from early spring until well into autumn atop hollow stalks that may reach from 4–8 in (10.2ndash;20.3 cm) tall. The golden blossoms yield a pale yellow dye for wool. After flowering, dandelion develops a round cluster of achenes, or seed cases. As many as 200 of these narrow seed cases, each with a single seed, form the characteristic puffball. Each achene is topped with a white, feathery tuft to carry it on the breeze. Dandelion's tap root may grow fat, and reach as deep as 1.5 ft (45.7 cm) in loose soil. The root has numerous hairy rootlets. Dandelion is a hardy herb and will regrow from root parts left in the ground during harvest.

General use

Dandelion has a long history of folk use. Early colonists brought the herb to North America. The native people soon recognized the value of the herb and sought it out for its medical and nutritious benefits. The entire plant is important as a general tonic, particularly as a liver tonic. It may be taken as an infusion of the leaf, a juice extraction, a root decoction, or a tincture. Fresh leaves may be added to salads or cooked as a potherb. The juice extracted from the stem and leaf is the most potent part of the plant for medicinal purposes. It has been used to eradicate warts and soothe calluses, bee stings, or sores. Infusions of dandelion blossoms have been used as a beautifying facial, refreshing the skin.

Dandelion is a nutritive herb rich in potassium , calicum, and lecithin , with iron, magnesium, niacin, phosphorus , proteins, silicon, boron , and zinc . Dandelion provides several B vitamins along with vitamins C and E as well as vitamin P. Chemical constituents in the leaf include bitter glycosides, carotenoids , terpenoids, choline, potassium salts, iron, and other minerals. The root also has bitter glycosides, tannins, triterpenes, sterols, volatile oil, choline, asparagin, and inulin.

Many herbalists regard the dandelion as an effective treatment for liver disease, useful even in such extreme cases as cirrhosis . It cleanses the bloodstream and increases bile production, and is a good remedy for gall bladder problems as well. The herb is also a boon to such other internal organs as the pancreas, kidneys, stomach, and spleen. The dried leaf, taken as a tea, is used as a mild laxative to relieve constipation . Dandelion leaf is also a good natural source of potassium, and will replenish any potassium that may be lost due to the herb's diuretic action on the kidneys. This characteristic makes dandelion a safe diuretic in cases of water retention due to heart problems. The herb is useful in cases of anemia and hepatitis , and may lower elevated blood pressure. Dandelion may also provide relief for rheumatism and arthritis. Dandelion therapy, consisting of therapeutic doses of dandelion preparations taken over time, may help reduce stiffness and increase mobility in situations of chronic degenerative joint disease. The root, dried and minced, can used as a coffee substitute, sometimes combined with roasted acorns and rye.

Preparations

All parts of the dandelion have culinary and medicinal value. It is best to harvest fresh young dandelion leaves in the spring. The small, young leaves are less bitter, and may be eaten uncooked in salads. Larger leaves can be lightly steamed to reduce bitterness. Leaves gathered in the fall are naturally less bitter. Dandelion blossoms, traditionally used in wine making, may be gathered throughout the flowering season. The deep, fleshy taproot should be gathered in the fall. It takes careful digging and loosening to extract the root intact, although any root parts left in the soil will eventually produce another plant. The root should be washed. Thicker roots should be sliced down their length to facilitate drying. The pieces should be spread out on a paper-lined tray in a light, airy room out of direct sunlight and stored in tightly sealed dark glass containers. Dried dandelion root may be somewhat less potent than the fresh root.

Leaf infusion: Place 2 oz of fresh dandelion leaf, less if dried, in a warmed glass container. Bring 2.5 cups of fresh nonchlorinated water to the boiling point and add it to the herbs. Cover the mixture and steep for 15–20 minutes, then strain. Drink the infusion warm or cold throughout the day, up to three cups per day. The prepared tea can be kept for about two days in the refrigerator.

Tincture: Combine 4 oz of finely-cut fresh dandelion root and leaf (or 2 oz of dry powdered herb) with 1 pt of brandy, gin, or vodka in a glass container. The alcohol should be enough to cover the plant parts and have a 50/50 ratio of alcohol to water. Cover and store the mixture away from light for about two weeks, shaking several times each day. Strain and store in a tightly capped dark glass bottle. A standard dose is 10–15 drops of the tincture in water, up to three times a day.

Precautions

Dandelion acts as a cholagogue, which means that it increases the flow of bile. It should not be used by persons with closure of the biliary ducts and other biliary ailments.

Side effects

Dandelion is a safe and nutritious herb widely used throughout the world. No health hazards have been reported when dandelion is used in designated therapeutic doses. According to the PDR For Herbal Medicine, however, some "superacid gastric complaints" could be triggered by using the herb. Dandelion stems contain a liquid latex substance that may be irritating to the skin of senstitive persons.

Luke had a midnight ordeal at the vets(so did we) after i decided he might have urethral obstruction.. it turned out to be constipation..

not funny :)

--------------

oh well...right after i wrote the above(the other day)..things started looking close to my initial suspicion..he did have trouble peeing after all..i gave him cranberry juice..which was very hard to do..because kitties hate it.. it did help looks like..at least a bit.. after another visit to the vet.. kitty Luke is now on pills and doing fine..hope it will not be anything reoccurring....he/they will be on a slightly changed diet... i learned on Flickr how serious this problem can turn out if they have crystals in the urine (which is still not clear in this case..it might be bacterial)..so it is important to act fast....

the cranberries for kitties are available in powdered form..

-----

they had blood and urine checked two weeks ago..so the vet was surprised..but she said stress can cause those things (well..just a guess)..we are moving and they are definitely noticing..

ok, i just thought cat owners may benefit from this info..i learned many things on flickr :)

.

This is california coffeeberry, Rhamnus californica. Note the purplish stems, the ellipitcal entire (no teeth) leaves that are slightly yellowish. 8 species of Rhamnus occur in California, this is the main one used for medicine, along with cascara sagrada, Rhamnus purshiana, which occurs in Mendocino county and north.

The bark is peeled on the 2nd to 3rd year old stems cut into 2-4 inch pieces and stored for making teas, tinctures. Tradition has it that one should store for up to 8 months to enhance the activity and reduce cramping, but it also works fresh.

Add other ingredients such as orange peel, ginger, yellow dock, burdock, to enhance flavor and reduce bitterness. Yerba santa was added to mask bitterness in pharmacy shops of the early 20th century.

Start with 1/2 cup of the tea before bed time, then go up to 1-2 cups if the effect is too mild. An enhanced bowel movement should occur the next morning.

The herb is also very useful for "draining dampness and heat" according to the system of traditional Chinese medicine. This is determined by looking at the tongue by determining If the coating towards the middle and back is yellow and somewhat thick, indicating pathogenic heat and dampness.

It's going to be his birthday!!! No, it's not an excuse for an orgy of consumerism - aided and abetted by that idiot Corporate SANTA™ urging us to spend and spend [some more] and then eventually to eat as much as you can until you are in a stupor ... Then there's plenty of ads for the systematic relief of indigestion and constipation remedies !!!

HOW TO EAT FRUITS? 

We all think eating fruits means just buying fruits, cutting it and just popping it into our mouths. It's not as easy as you think.

It's important to know how and when to eat.

DON'T EAT FRUIT AFTER MEALS!

FRUITS SHOULD BE EATEN ON AN EMPTY STOMACH.

It will play a major role to detoxify your system, supplying a great deal of energy for weight loss and other life activities.

FRUIT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FOOD. Let's say you eat two slices of bread and then a slice of fruit. The slice of fruit is ready to go straight through the stomach into the intestines, but it is prevented from doing so.

In the meantime the whole meal rots and ferments and turns to acid. The minute the fruit comes into contact with the food in the stomach and digestive juices, the entire mass of food begins to spoil....

Eat fruit on an empty stomach or before meals! People complain, "Every time I eat watermelon I burp; when I eat apples, my stomach bloats up; when I eat a banana I feel like running to the toilet, etc ” This will not arise if you eat the fruit on an empty stomach. Fruit mixes with the putrefying other food and produces gas, hence you will bloat!

Grey hair, balding, nervous outburst, and dark circles under eyes will NOT happen by taking fruit on an empty stomach.

There is no such thing as some fruits, like orange and lemon are acidic, because all fruits become alkaline in our body, according to Dr. Herbert Shelton who did research on this matter. Master the correct way of eating fruits, and you will have beauty, longevity, health, energy, happiness and normal weight.

Drink only fresh fruit juice, NOT from the cans. Don't even drink juice that has been heated up. Don't eat cooked fruits because you don't get the nutrients at all. Cooking destroys all the vitamins.

Eating a whole fruit is better than drinking the juice. If you should drink the juice, drink it mouthful by mouthful slowly, because you must let it mix with your saliva before swallowing it. You can go on a 3-day fruit fast to cleanse your body. Just eat fruits and drink fruit juice throughout the 3 days and you will be surprised when your friends tell you how radiant you look!

KIWI: A good source of potassium, magnesium, vitamin E & fiber. Its vitamin C content is twice that of an orange.

APPLE: Although an apple has a low vitamin C content, it has antioxidants & flavonoids which enhances the activity of vitamin C thereby helping to lower risks of colon cancer, heart attack & stroke.

STRAWBERRY: .. have the highest total antioxidant power among major fruits & protect from cancer-causing, blood vessel-clogging free radicals.

ORANGE : Taking 2-4 oranges a day may help keep colds away, lower cholesterol, prevent & dissolve kidney stones as well as lessening the risk of colon cancer.

WATERMELON: Composed of 92% water, it is also packed with a giant dose of glutathione, which helps boost our immune system. A key source of lycopene the cancer fighting oxidant. Other nutrients found in watermelon are vitamin C & Potassium.

GUAVA & PAPAYA: for their high vitamin C content. Guava is also rich in fiber, which helps prevent constipation. Papaya is rich in carotene; good for your eyes.

Drinking Cold water after meals = Cancer!

It will solidify the oily stuff you have just consumed and slow down digestion... Once this 'sludge' reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. This will turn into fats and lead to cancer. Better to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.

HEART ATTACK PROCEDURE': Not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting. Be aware of pain in the jaw line. You may never have chest pain during a heart attack. Nausea and intense sweating are common symptoms. Sixty percent who have an attack while asleep do not wake up. Pain in the jaw can awaken you.

A cardiologist says if everyone sends this message to 10 people, you can be sure it'll save at least one life.

From the April 2009 issue of Korean Health Journal, the strangest piece of junkmail I've ever received. See set for more.

This makes me giggle every time I look at it!

While most problems are more readily discussed, it isn’t the same with one’s potty concerns. While it may be embarrassing and no laughing matter, only sufferers in silence of the troublesome malady know what it truly means to feel “clogged” up. Constipation is commonly...
