This is the famous (some say, notorious) Boot Hill Saloon on Main Street, Daytona Beach, Florida. All of these watering holes are open year-round, but of course are slammed during Bike Week and Biketoberfest. Boot Hill is one of my two favorite bars on Main Street; the other sits beside it: Main Street Station, which is a bar that used to be a gas station, and they still have the old pumps outside.

Boot Hill's motto is: "You're Better Off Here Than Across The Street," for directly across the street is the historic Pinewood Cemetery!

Here is the link to Boot Hill's web site:

Ya'll come...it's one hell of a fun party!

14 June 2011. A panorama "stitched" from three photos showing the stalls which were then in the forecourt of Bruce Grove Station in High Road Tottenham.

Both the station building (at the rear on the right) and the adjoining shops and building facades benefited from external "heritage" funding to preserve some of Tottenham's historic buildings. This also had the aim of regenerating businesses in the central section of the High Road.

Stalls into Shacks

Unfortunately, Haringey's Planning and Regeneration Department allowed the erection of temporary market stalls in front of the arches of Bruce Grove Station, owned by Network Rail. It seems that "temporary" then become indefinite.

Following conservation of the station building several years ago, the area where the stalls were erected was a publicly accessible courtyard with trees and seating. Behind the courtyard were retail units in the railway arches.

The jumble of stalls completely defeated the intention of the restoration. The station building itself was partly obscured. We lost the courtyard to a mess of ugly, plastic covered shacks. These also undermined the work done to restore and upgrade the nearby building facades. Work which cost many millions and was paid for from both public and private funds.

I'm not suggesting that the original restoration of Bruce Grove Station was ideal. Far from it. An opportunity for a more imaginative scheme was squandered. The conservation was more like constipation with no attempt made or permitted for the sort of modern, 'green', and stylish updating of railway stations - including commercially successful arch units we now see around London and other cities.

The courtyard might have become public space. Instead the pavement remains narrow and cluttered. At the rear of the station in Moorefield Road, a small corner continued to be used as an informal pissoir. (It featured in an Urban Design book as an example of what not to do.*) Former councillor Ray Dodds told me he'd suggested a platform-level office which could attract a minicab business and encourage better use of the station. He told me this was rejected.

By 2011 we had the worst option.

I sometimes wondered if Haringey Planning and Regeneration Department was proud of this degeneration? I was told by that a senior planning officer justified the stalls on the basis that it was "economic activity". Would they apply the same test to a posher part of Haringey? Or is it only in Tottenham that anything goes?

Are you wondering if antibiotics are the best treatment option for Lyme disease?

Antibiotics are the leading therapy option for most infections, but Lyme disease is difficult to diagnose, often missed entirely, or is confused with other conditions due to the conflicting symptoms.

Often, antibiotics aren’t an effective treatment for Lyme & tick-borne illness, and in some cases can make patients worse. After all, treating a complex infection that can consist of multiple pathogens, bacteria, and viruses, and is different with every tick bite, isn’t a simple matter.

According to the New England Journal of Medicine, approximately 10 to 20 percent of people treated with the recommended antibiotics for Lyme disease still have persisting symptoms after they complete treatment.

For many, an integrative approach to healing may prove to be a better alternative.

There is a lot of information out there, but learning about the best treatment options available to you doesn’t have to be difficult.

This guide will walk you through the common antibiotics used in the treatment of Lyme disease, the applications and side effects, plus alternative options to choose from.

Why Antibiotics Are Usually the Go-To Treatment

Lyme & tick-borne disease is caused by bacterial pathogens that invade the body, which can cause a multitude of possible co-infections, and make diagnosis and treatment difficult.

Antibiotics are usually the first line of defense for chronic Lyme disease due to its similarities to other conditions, for which antibiotics are usually effective. This can lead to misdiagnosis. Many medical professionals unfamiliar with the complexities of Lyme & tick borne disease strictly treat chronic Lyme disease symptoms with antibiotics rather than explore other treatments.

Although some treatment methods differ between cultures, demand for antibiotics in the United States also tends to be higher while some countries, such as Germany, use antibiotic treatment as a last resort.

Are Antibiotics Effective in the Treatment of Lyme Disease?

Antibiotic intervention has been effective at the early stages or with acute infections, however, there are no guarantee when it comes to successful treatment and many cases are past the point where antibiotics have a significant effect, especially for those with persistent symptoms.

Lyme and tick-borne illness is caused by opportunistic bacteria that know how to adapt and trick the immune system to stay active inside the body, by using biofilms or other means of defense, they can outsmart antibiotics in many cases.

Some studies have found that while you may experience some subjective improvement while on antibiotics, the symptoms often return after the treatment stops.

When the pathogen survives this treatment, it can become resistant to most antibiotics as well, making that treatment modality ineffective. According to research, some patients exhibited symptoms for an extended period and had received multiple courses of antibiotics without significant improvement.

Long-term antibiotic therapy has been deemed ineffective, and in fact, most medical authorities advise against long-term antibiotic treatment for Lyme Disease for this reason.

Another common reason antibiotics can be ineffective is because patients don’t take them according to their physicians recommendations.

What Antibiotics are Used to Treat Lyme Disease?

There are several common antibiotics used in the treatment of Lyme disease. Some can’t be used in certain cases – pregnancy, children or allergies – but the table below includes the antibiotics, purpose, dosage, and duration for adults.

Antibiotic

Purpose

Doxycycline

Stops the growth of bacteria – not for viral infections. This antibiotic is not used with young children or pregnant women (due to the damaging effects on the fetus).

Amoxicillin

A penicillin-type antibiotic that stops the growth of bacteria – not for viral infections. Can be used with children or pregnant women.

Cefuroxime axetil (Ceftin)

Stops the growth of a wide variety of bacterial infections and is commonly used to prevent infection from certain surgeries. Can be used with children or pregnant women who are allergic to amoxicillin.

Azithromycin (Zithromax)

Commonly known as a Z-Pak. The once per day dosage usually makes it easier for patients to remember to take it. Stops a wide variety of bacterial infections and is sometimes used as a penicillin alternative for those who are allergic to penicillin. It can also be used with children.

Ceftriaxone (Rocephin)

A highly potent antibiotic administered via injection to treat serious bacterial infections. Preferred choice for neurologic Lyme disease.

Cefotaxime (Claforan)

A recommended alternative to Ceftriaxone (Rocephin) for Lyme disease with acute neurological disease, for patients with Lyme carditis or late manifestations of Lyme disease. Administered intravenously.

Treating Children with Antibiotics

A typical treatment for children less than 8 years old would include oral amoxicillin three times a day. If the child is allergic to that antibiotic, cefuroxime axetil would take its place, but only twice a day. Children over 8 years old would take doxycycline twice daily for the same duration of time, and anyone allergic to it would receive amoxicillin or cefuroxime axetil instead.

Treatments usually last 2-4 weeks.

Treating Pregnant Women with Antibiotics

According to the CDC, no life-threatening effects on the fetus have been found in cases when the mother receives antibiotic treatment, however, most physicians will change the normal treatment of doxycycline to amoxicillin, since doxycycline can affect fetal development.

Typical treatment for pregnant women with Lyme disease includes:

Oral amoxicillin

500 mg

Three times a day for 2-3 weeks.

Allergies to amoxicillin can change the treatment to 500 mg of cefuroxime axetil twice a day.

If you’re pregnant or if it’s a possibility, inform your doctor before any treatment.

Can Antibiotics Make Lyme Disease Symptoms Worse?

For some patients, lyme disease symptoms worsen for the first few days on an antibiotic, which occurs because the antibiotics start to kill the bacteria. For others, antibiotics have made their condition worse overall.

This is not to say there is not a place for antibiotics in the treatment of Lyme & tick-borne illness, but rather that we should take a look at the potential repercussions of antibiotic treatment, and consider the treatment preferences of the patient.

All antibiotics and medicines have side effects, so make sure you understand what common side effects you may experience. If you’re having persistent symptoms or are concerned about those you’re experiencing, contact your doctor immediately.

Common Lyme Disease Antibiotic Treatment Side Effects

Any antibiotics for Lyme disease can cause skin rashes, fever or diarrhea, while IV antibiotics can cause a low white blood cell count, and affect gut health. Some antibiotics create colonization or bacterial overgrowth with other antibiotic-resistant organisms unrelated to Lyme because antibiotics kill the good bacteria in our gut along with the bad.

It may be beneficial to use probiotics to restore the good bacteria and balance gut health, but make sure you speak with your doctor before taking anything.

Do Antibiotics Cure Lyme Disease?

As of 2018, there is no “cure” for Lyme disease and no definitive test to see if you are cured. Although some strains respond positively to antibiotics in early stages, one size does not fit all.

The pathogen can also reappear even after this type of treatment because Lyme disease is difficult to categorize, due to its multifaceted nature and treatment specialization in most doctors.

Even if a physician has working knowledge of Lyme disease, antibiotics aren’t always 100 percent effective. However, there are alternative treatment options besides antibiotics, often geared toward management and improving quality of life overall.

Lyme Disease Alternative Treatments When Antibiotics Don’t Work

So, what do you do when antibiotics don’t work? Despite the limited effectiveness of antibiotics, Lyme disease is not unmanageable.

Integrative Medicine

Integrative medicine, a healing-oriented approach that takes the whole person into account, including all aspects of a patient’s lifestyle, has opened up new possibilities for treatment.

These integrative treatments:

Are as non-toxic and non-invasive as possible, using the body’s natural systems to do most of the work.

Don’t have the side effects of antibiotics.

Are based on foundational medicine to strengthen the body’s resilience.

Are usually more patient-centered, focusing special attention on the individual’s needs.

Integrative treatments focus on the full range of physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual and environmental influences that affect a person’s health and provides the patient with more control.

What’s the Catch?

There are pros and cons to everything and integrative medicine is no different. This approach normally has a longer treatment time because these treatments often focus on the disease at its root, making it more of a marathon than a sprint.

This means it’s not the best choice in emergency cases, as opposed to traditional medicine, which is made to work fast. Also, integrative medicine doesn’t have as much research or regulation behind it as traditional medicine, although more is being added as years go on.

Integrative Treatment vs. Traditional Treatment

There’s no verifying evidence that supports traditional being better than integrative, and there are pros and cons to each. However, more doctors agree that when you work with your primary care physician and an integrative treatment approach, you experience a collaborative method working in your best interest.

Studies have found that many patients feel that integrative medicine helps with coping and management of chronic illnesses when conventional medicine offers no cure.

Creating an environment conducive to healing may require a multilevel unifying approach and personalized programs that take into the complicated behavior of Lyme disease.

Using your own body’s natural rhythms as a basis for healing also creates a better chance for relief from Lyme symptoms, which is why Infusio has a five step method to help the body find the balance it needs to manage Lyme, based on a foundational idea that your body can heal itself given the right environment, lifestyle changes, and intervention. This foundational protocol consists of:

Adjusting the immune system responses to restore healthy levels of the immune cells so they can detect and destroy the bacteria.

Re-establishing inner equilibrium for your cells and optimizing the cellular terrain with IV nutrients, minerals, amino acids, and trace elements.

Ensuring the natural detox pathways of the body are working and aid the body in discarding toxic waste.

Using natural antimicrobial treatments to reduce the bacterial and viral loads inside the body.

Providing essential lifestyle, nutrition, and stress management support that restores digestive health, reduces inflammation, and returns the body to a state of homeostasis.

By adding cellular or stem-cell based therapies to assist the body in tissue repair, and by establishing a healthy regulation capacity within this treatment, a majority of our Lyme patients have improved to a point where their quality of life has significantly improved, and their symptoms have diminished enough to manage.

The Infusio Five Steps to Health philosophy which integrates immune system optimization, cell therapy, and cutting-edge treatments even improved symptoms and gave many patients relief when other traditional treatments didn’t.

Main Takeaways:

Antibiotics are primarily effective in early stages and with acute infections, although there is no guarantee they will work at any stage.

Antibiotic treatments are based on certain factors, including age, pregnancy, allergies and stages of Lyme.

There is no “cure” for Lyme disease, yet.

Treatments often work better with a multi-faceted approach, including traditional medicine and a holistic base.

Always research, work with your primary physician and remember that nothing works for everyone.

For those who prefer a more holistic approach, Infusio has one of the most comprehensive Lyme programs available, with cutting edge stem-cell based treatments including exosome therapy, to restore, strengthen, and optimize the body for a long-term recovery.

Pāpala kēpau or Umbrella catchbird tree

Nyctaginaceae (Four O'Clock family)

Indigenous to the Hawaiian Islands

Hawaiʻi Island (Cultivated)

The early Hawaiians used an adhesive gum from pāpala kēpau for repairing bowls.

The milky sap from pāpala kēpau was used for cuts. The cooked leaves were used to cure pāʻaoʻao (childhood disease with physical weakening) and for lepo paʻa (constipation).

Pāpala kēpau are truly fascinating plants with a sad, but interesting, cultural history. A sinistral use for the sticky fruit was to trap native birds. [6] The captured victims provided feathers for the strikingly colorful cloaks (capes), helmets, lei, images and kāhili. Birds such as 'ō'ō and mamo were plucked of their few moulting yellow feathers and set free to grow more for the next season. However, this was not the case with the 'i'iwi and 'apapane which were covered with red- or green-colored feathers and would not have survived the plucking. They were captured, plucked and eaten.

The former generic name Pisonia is named for William Piso (ca. 1611-1678), Dutch physician, pharmacist, botanist, and early writer on medicinal plants of Brazil.

The specific epithet umbellifera is from the Latin umbelliferum, umbel-bearing or shade carrying, from umbrella (altered from umbell), Latin for parasol, and named for the large leaves of this species.

Sweltering bankers thunder grotesquely towards the urgently beeping doors and thrust their bodies onto the pile of flesh and impatience. I can feel the warm breath, from a couple whispering sweet nothings into each others’ ear, ooze down my collar as the closing doors almost decapitate the embarrassingly tall man who awkwardly towers above everybody casting a shadow over the whole carriage. Once the fluster and flurry is over, I find myself, head nestled in the armpit of an angry looking skinhead and a grey old man’s grotesquely gentle fingers wrapped loosely around mine whilst he tries to steady himself. Somehow I manage to isolate myself from this and cut myself off from what is going on around me and this way I manage to feel comfortable with these things happening.

This specific set of rules is quintessentially English and must be closely observed.

••Conversations must not be started with strangers, unless of course something has gone wrong and you want to whinge because that is one of the things the English do best.

••Make sure you are careful when offering your seat to people, you must not offer it to someone who considers themselves still young

••Avoid eye contact at all cost.

••You can tut-tut about rucksacks taking up valuable space, but you are not allowed to do the same for fat people

••Don’t read other people’s literature, but if you must, be sneaky.

••Don’t talk too loudly (unless of course you are a banker, have a 3-G phone, and need to SELL SELL SELL (but only around the City or Westminster))

••STAND ON THE RIGHT WHEN ON THE ESCALATORS.

••Don’t be over-ambitious with closing doors.

••Don’t persist with a faulty ticket in the barriers.

This set of rules however is not a new one. In 1944 a series of posters, designed by Fougasse (Cryil Kenneth Bird), where released presenting on them some of the tube etiquette rules i have previously mentioned for example they urged people to have their tickets ready for the barriers and reminded passengers to stand on the right of the escalators. That is not to say that preceding the 1940’s people where rude and obnoxious and had a total disregard for these rules, because they are a result of a sort of common knowledge and are ingrained into our minds, well at least most peoples.

After investigating the subject of tube etiquette and human behaviour on the tube I decided I wanted to explore and comment on the positions and the proximity in which we stand on the underground.

The cramped and crowded environment dictates the movements you make and places you in awkward and intimate positions. The general rules of personal space in Britain vary substantially as they do for different nations/ cultures. In the UK we are generally quite conservative with casual space being 4 feet and intimate being within one and a half feet from you. But as soon as you take those first few steps down below ground level the story starts to change, as journeys, for the main part, in the western world tend to be measured in time/ distance this means that people are willing to disregard usual rules of social etiquette in order to get on the tube against all costs, to get somewhere quicker.

Intimate space is usually reserved for affection and comforting from partners, pets and close friends and family. The only strangers who are willingly let into this space are health care professionals and prostitutes. However on the tube we seem to be able to share this space with about six other people we don't know - from tourists rushing frantically between London "landmarks" to tick them off their list of what London is meant to be, to blank faced commuters, to vagabonds spreading their story up and down the carriage, and to anxious mothers buying Christmas presents in the late summer sales.

With this set of images I wanted to look at the absurdity of the uncomfortable and awkward positions in which people stand in the tube and the isolation you experience regardless of the crammed carriage and the abundance of life surrounding you. This is exaggerated by de-contextualising the intricately choreographed positions which are suggested by their invisible companions and enclosure. By removing the passengers from where you would usually see them, it helps you understand the underlying humour and oddness of the situation. Its is harder to notice these things when you are cough up in the event itself as we become disconnected in the transient atmosphere of this non-place, voluntarily or non-voluntarily noticing virtually nothing between home and our destination. The dead-pan, and emotionless atmosphere reflects the numbed mind of the commuter, and the cold and lonely feel of the images also reflect that melancholy, and monotonous isolation.

”The English social disease is a congenital disorder, bordering on a sort of sub-clinical combination of autism and agoraphobia (the politically correct euphemism would be ‘socially challenged’).” It is our awkwardness, insularity, obliqueness and “emotional constipation”, which generally make it quite hard to partake in any sort of straight forward communication with another human being without becoming on the over-polite, awkwardly introverted, or sticking our heads into the sand, or the complete opposite and become loutish, obnoxious, crude and rowdy.

This to me is what makes the whole underground phenomenon so amusing in England as opposed to other countries where complete strangers will happily act as flesh pillows for their fellow weary traveller. Sharing such intimate space with strangers is not programmed into “the English way” this can be backed up by a few of these key English phrases: “Oi-what you looking at”; “mind your own business”; “keep yourself to yourself”.

As there train penetrates through the tunnel into the station people make futile efforts to get closer to the door. Suddenly the doors start beeping and jerk open, a slimy mob erupts onto the platform devouring it. As people alight they share not a glance or a word between them. They got what they wanted, now they can leave, no pleasantries expected, they probably wont see each other again, as you shuffle up the stairs feeling damp with sweat and anxious to leave, like some sort of sordid, grimy one night stand.

#constipation #hardstool #digestivedisorders #asafoetida #acidity #belching #burping #digestion

Yes I've done it again, after all this is my best side. Not quite sure how many of these there are now but no doubt there will be more. It's quite surprising how the back can look like that while the front is all manner of squishy. I've seen the effort people put in to making the front look all impressive and buff and no, I'm not ready for that sort of commitment.

I suppose there's the option of the gym but when I think of all those oiled up men standing in front of the mirror making constipation faces while shouting random numbers as they lift weights. I mean who has ever really gotten past ten and a half? I say pah to those people who get to twelve. That's right Pah!

Don't look at me like that with that face of yours. You should know by now that exercise is evil and dangerous and can lead to gratuitous sweating and the need to talk about reps and lifts and lycra and calling everyone "Bro". I say nay to all of that. Embrace the vending machine. The only machine in the gym who is truly your friend and accepts you the way you are.

Believing you may have a diastasis recti can be a worrisome / frustrating experience. However, there is an abundance of information regarding diastasis recti recovery. We at Restore Your Core have designed a program specifically for women who are suffering from diastasis recti or other abdominal/pelvic floor issues. This article will help begin to address what diastasis recti is and instruct you in how to perform a self-test.

What is Diastasis Recti & Its Symptoms?

If you believe you have a diastasis recti, you can perform a self-test or have your PT or OT assess you. Be aware: symptoms of a diastasis recti and the issues that accompany one can differ from person to person.

What is Diastasis Recti?

Diastasis recti is the stretching or separation of the rectus abdominis (6 pack) muscles caused by the thinning of the linea alba (midline connective tissue). Diastasis recti separation leaves your abdominal organs unsupported, and if severe, can expose your digestive organs creating a stomach bulge.

This separation can range from being isolated above the belly button, within the belly button, and below the belly button sitting above the pubic bone. In some cases, the separation emcompasses the entire mid section of the core.

In both men and women, this gap can be created in the midline of your belly anywhere from the pubic bone to the base of your ribcage. During a crunch or sit-up, where one would normally feel tension and closure, there is a space in between.

Symptoms of DR

Rectus abdominis separation can lead to a stomach bulge (aka stomach pooch), pelvic floor issues, unnatural posture, and stomach and back pain. The symptoms of diastasis recti include but are not limited to:

Abdominal Bulge

Abdominal Gaping

Lower Back Pain

Sensation of Bloatedness without Bloat

Incontinence (leak pee)

Poor Posture

Constipation & Bloat

Doming or invagination of the linea alba when when performing crunches or other traditional ab exercises

Difficulty with everyday activities due to a lack of core function.

Unless you have a low body fat percentage or have an overly toned core with a visible 6-pack, it is very hard to diagnose a diastasis recti on appearance alone. The linea alba lies beneath the fat layer of your abdomen, so it cannot be seen. Many people have a diastasis recti for years before learning they have it.

How Diastasis Recti Develops

Diastasis recti is an issue, generally of excess intra ab pressure. That pressure can come from many things like: chronic tense ab muscles, limitations in movement of the torso, chronic breathing patterns like belly breathing and even a pregnancy. Yet, a diastasis recti does not solely arise from pregnancy, like many people believe. Many athletes, body builders, active exercisers, and even inactive people can develop diastasis recti.

Many of the symptoms are the same in men and women with a diastasis, but how they appear can be somewhat different.

Develops

The development of diastasis recti is most commonly associated with women postpartum. However, men and children can also develop diastasis recti if there are underlying core issues such as:

Weakened Core Muscles

Excess Abdominal Pressure

These issues most commonly occur due to injury, improper breathing patterns, core tension, imbalance of pressure within the abdomen, and even over toned muscles (oblique dominance).

How to Tell if You Have Diastasis Recti

The symptoms of diastasis recti are not always noticeable. In fact, many people who have diastasis recti do not know they have it! However there are some symptoms that tend to indicate the presence of a diastasis recti.

Abdominal Bulge

An abdominal bulge is not always an indication of a diastasis recti, yet, it can be a symptom.

This bulge, or stomach “pooch,” occurs when the abdominal organs become unsupported by the rectus abdominis muscles. This can appear as a cone shape or ridge above and within the area located close to the belly button. However, depending on where the diastasis recti has become isolated, the bulge can range from above the belly button, on the belly button (causing the belly button to flatten), or below the belly button just above the pubic bone.

Muscle Separation & Linea Alba Stretching

This is the most noticeable and common symptom of diastasis recti (whether you have significant body fat or no body fat at all). A minor separation (one of 1-2 finger widths) is not a significant injury,, but I advised considering rehab or core building exercises to prevent the gap from widening.

In more severe cases, the separation can be that of 5-10 finger widths. This effect is much more noticeable and can be seen as a crevice or significant gap within the abdominal core. Diastasis recti is also measured by shallowness or deepness. Someone could potentially have a 10 finger width separation but it’s shallow. In this case, exercise and safe core strengthening routines can help restore the core to its natural state.

Diastasis Recti Testing

If you think you have a diastasis recti, you can perform a self-test at home or have a physical therapist assess you.

A self-assessment can be performed as follows:

Lie on your back in a comfortable position. Bend your knees and place your feet flat on the floor.

Place one hand on the midline of your core with your fingers pointing straight down on your abs.

If you need support for your head, place your other hand under your head and neck for support. Slowly lift your head and add minimal pressure to your fingers placed on your core. With no diastasis recti, there is the feeling of a toned wall as you lift your head up. If you feel a gap, or your fingers sink into your core, you likely have diastasis recti. In very obvious cases, you can feel the sides of your core muscles in between that gap on the left and right sides.

Repeat the process for the areas just above your belly button and below your belly button to determine whether or not the diastasis recti is isolated or in your core as a whole.

As mentioned before, a gap that is only one or two finger widths wide might not be a big concern, unless it is deep – but caution is recommended. However, if you discover that you have a gap ranging from 2.7 cms or larger (2.5 fingers or larger) you should consult a PT or OT.

If a self-test determines that you may have a diastasis recti, make an appointment with a physical therapist to assess you further. They will be exponentially helpful in helping decide what the next steps for you may be and how to begin your healing process.

It is not uncommon for many postpartum people to experience complications such as pelvic organ prolapse postpartum. Vaginal and rectal prolapse occur when the supporting muscle and tissue structures become weakened during pregnancy and delivery. Despite common belief, prolapse does not only affect women who have had multiple pregnancies or are outside of the advised age, but it can also affect many postpartum people as well. It can be a surprising and shocking experience for many postpartums to discover they have developed a prolapse after vaginal birth. However, in some cases, the symptoms will resolve on their own as their body recovers from delivering their child or can be managed and healed through exercise and proper postpartum aftercare.

In this article I hope to address the ways postpartum people can manage prolapse after childbirth and how you may experience a full recovery.

How Common is Prolapse After Childbirth?

The truth is, your pelvic floor and uterine wall experience a lot of stress during your pregnancy. In many cases, people will begin experiencing the complications of prolapse and other pregnancy related issues before they deliver their child. A stressful or complicated delivery is not always the culprit for POP or DR. As your child continues to grow within you, the supporting tissues and muscle structures are strained, which can lead to you experiencing complications even before birth. However, it is common for many people to become aware of these issues postpartum. The weakness in the pelvic region can cause some of your pelvic organs (bladder, bowel, uterus) to slip out into the vaginal or rectal walls. Despite many people experiencing resolved symptoms as they continue to heal after their delivery, many may still experience future complications. Some of the most common types of pelvic organ prolapse include:

Uterine prolapse –uterine prolapse involves prolapse of the cervix and uterus down into the vagina

Bladder prolapse (cystocele) -involves a prolapsed bladder into the front wall of the vagina

Bowel prolapse (rectocele) is the prolapse of the vagina into the back wall of the vagina or rectum.

In some cases, these prolapses may coexist. Example: you may experience both a uterine prolapse and bladder prolapse at the same time.

Is it Normal to Have a Slight Prolapse After Giving Birth?

In short, it is not uncommon for people to experience a prolapse after giving birth. As you undergo the many hormonal changes, physical strain and stress, and the weight of your child can weaken the supportive tissues and muscles in your pelvic floor – causing the organs to shift and become misaligned.

Along with the hormonal and physical demands pregnancy can place on your body, a vaginal delivery can also contribute to pelvic prolapse as well. The stretching and straining of the pelvic muscles beyond their limits can significantly compromise the strength and functionality of the pelvic region. Over-stretching can leave scarring and nerve damage resulting in damaged tissues and muscle structures – leading to pelvic organ alignment issues and can cause them to shift downward into the vagina.

There are a host of factors that can contribute to various forms of pelvic organ prolapse. Some of the most common include:

A traumatic delivery

Baby’s birth weight

Pelvic floor muscle weakness

Chronic straining during bowel movements, constipation

Chronic coughing

Multiple pregnancies, deliveries

How is Postpartum Prolapse Treated?

There are many options out there to help you recover from postpartum pelvic organ prolapse. It is important that after your delivery (once you’ve received clearance by your medical professional), to begin a form of postpartum rehab. Offerings can range between physical therapy, physiotherapy, or movement specialists (Restore Your Core). In many cases, you would treat this condition as you would any other physical injury: REST and light movement. You may also need to treat any other underlying conditions that may be contributing to the prolapse. Some options may include:

Pelvic exercises, such as yogic exercises, to help strengthen your pelvic floor muscles

Hydration and a high-fiber diet can help reduce bowel issues

Treating a chronic cough to aid in reducing pressure and strain on the pelvic floor muscles

Avoid heavy lifting or any core exercises that increase intra-abdominal pressure

Stool softeners may help reduce strain during bowel evacuation

Hormone replacement therapy for women post-menopause

Or the use of a vaginal pessary to aid in protrusion issues.

How to Treat Prolapse After Birth

Pelvic Floor Exercises

Pelvic floor exercises are vital to your recovery, especially postpartum. Pelvic floor stretches and exercises are known for reducing the symptoms of prolapse, restoring function to the pelvic floor and core, and realigning organs that may have been affected by the prolapse. If you have discovered you have a prolapse after childbirth, it is important to begin working towards recovery through physical therapy or working out at home. Most postpartum people may begin exercising soon after giving birth (within the first couple of weeks), however, if you experienced tearing or delivered via C-section, you may need to wait longer before beginning treatment.

Pelvic Floor Safe Exercise

Practicing safe pelvic floor exercises are important for a sustained recovery and preventing further injury during treatment. Inappropriate exercises or moving too quickly can increase the risk of injury, overloading the pelvic floor, or causing long-term damage to the pelvic floor. Practicing safe pelvic floor engagement and workouts will help strengthen your muscles and the surrounding tissues that have been damaged during your pregnancy and childbirth, helping restore the natural support system for your vital organs.

Safe pelvic floor exercises include those which are low impact and light exercises: walking, stationary cycling, and some yoga poses. More safe exercises can include core strengthening techniques and movements as well are pelvic floor strength training exercises: more intensive yoga poses, stretches, and workouts. Although exercising is important for recovery, it is important that you avoid high impact exercises: intense core exercises, heavy-lifting, or extensive cardio training in order to avoid making the prolapse worse or increasing other postpartum symptoms.

To learn more about safe postpartum exercises, read our additional blog on Postpartum Exercises.

Rest

Resting can be one of the most difficult things new moms struggle with remembering to do. As you continue caring for your little one, ensuring you are getting exercise and eating nutritiously, can help you make a better transition back into your daily routine. It is extremely important that you remember to rest throughout your postpartum period. Rest is especially vital to your prolapse recovery. As you reach the end of each day (and periods of down time during the day), rest with your feet elevated to help relieve any symptoms you may be experiencing. Rest can significantly promote your overall prolapse recovery.

Bowel Management

Straining during bowel movements and constipation can increase prolapse symptoms. Although I am not a dietician, in many cases, changing your diet and eating high fiber foods can help relieve symptoms of constipation that can reduce the amount of straining you have been experiencing.

Can a Prolapse Go Away on its Own?

For many people, postpartum prolapse can correct itself over the course of your postpartum recovery. Lifestyle changes, exercise, proper diet, and avoiding exercises of movements that may prevent your body from healing are the first steps toward prolapse recovery.

After giving birth, your pelvic floor and core muscles will be in the process of healing for at least a year. Although many people may begin being active again after the first 8-weeks postpartum, often people will continue to face pelvic pain and symptoms of diastasis recti for months after delivering their child. Both your core and your pelvic region have gone through significant changes in order to accommodate your baby. Attempting to quickly get back into an exercise or workout routine can add to your pain and place unnecessary pressure and strain on your core and pelvic floor muscles – especially when they are already weakened.

Every woman is different and the recovery length can change depending on many factors. Healing can take anywhere from a few months to over a year, depending on whether or not there are underlying conditions which may be increasing the pain. While there are no overnight success stories, there are many many success stories of people like you who have healed their pelvic organ prolapse by taking these steps slowly and surely.

A small blue glass bottle of Milk of Magnesia complete with it’s original metal screw-on cap and labels. This bottle is plain without any moulded text or graphics, unlike their earlier bottles. This and the Optrex bottle were found together in a shed clear out. It measures 4 ¾” (about 120mm) high.

Milk of Magnesia was patented in 1873 by Charles Henry Phillips (1820-1882). It is a white suspension of magnesium hydroxide (8 – 8.5% w/v) that works by neutralising excess hydrochloric acid in the stomach producing insoluble magnesium chloride and water. The active ingredient in Milk of Magnesia sold today is the same as it was over a hundred years ago.

This bottle of Milk of Magnesia was manufactured by Phillips Milk of Magnesia Company (part of the Sterling Drug group) in Stamford, England until production there was phased out after 1976. The last blue glass bottles used there was during 1976 whereas today, all the bottles are of blue plastic.

another one of my experiments with flavours, black sesame muffins topped with candied winter melon or white chocolate buttons. lol, now i know why practically no one sells these . . . grey coloured foods just don’t look very appealing! m likes them so i’ll be making a 2nd batch soon :).

“Taking black sesame seeds can heal all the chronic illness after 100 days, improve skin tone on body and face after 1 year, reverse gray hair after 2 years, and regrow teeth after 3 years.” says the Compendium of Materia Medica, the largest and most comprehensive medical writings in the history of Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). This herb is also known as Semen Sesami Nigrum and Hei Zhi Ma and related experiments show that the content of vitamin E contained in this herb is the highest in all foods of plant origin. It is well known that vitamin E can promote cell division and delay cell senescence. Long-term use can counteract or neutralize the accumulation of cell senescence substance of “radicals” and then delay aging and extend life expectancy. Of course, its health benefits are far more than just providing vitamin E. So, what is black sesame good for? Are black sesame seeds better than white ones? How to eat it to maximize its health benefits? All the questions related will be answered in this article soon.

What are black sesame seeds?

Actually it refers to dry mature seeds of Sesamum indicum L., a plant under the genus Sesamum of the family Pedaliaceae. It plants are usually harvested during autumn when the fruits at the peak of their ripeness. And next dry them in the sun, knock out of the seeds, remove impurities, and then dry in the sun once again.

It is flat oval, about 3mm long and 2mm wide. Surface is black and smooth or with netted wrinkles. Tip has brown punctate hilum. Seed coat is thin. Cotyledons are two, white, and rich in oil. It has slight odor, sweet taste, and oil aroma.

Main chemical constituents are up to 55% fatty oil, sesamin, sesamolin, sesamol, vitamin E, phytosterols, lecithin, pedaliin, protein, oligosaccharides, planteose, sesamose, and mall amounts of phosphorus, potassium and cytochrome C, folic acid, nicotinic acid, sucrose, pentosan and large amounts of calcium content. In addition, fatty oil mainly contains approximately 48% oleic acid, approximately 37% linoleic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, arachidonic acid, and glycerolipid of lignoceric acid.

Black sesame seeds benefits

As mentioned above, there are two types of sesame seeds – black and white sesame seeds. Both of them contain almost the same composition. So, what is the difference between them? By comparison, white sesame seed is better for edible purpose but the black version is preferable if used for medicinal purpose. To be specific, as the tonic black one is good at nourishing the liver and kidney and improving hair growth and hair color while white one is expert in relaxing bowel, nourishing yin and moisturizing to the skin. Besides, black sesame has high nutritional value. It also contains extremely valuable sesamin and melanin. As a result, it is widely used in treating hair loss and grey hair, inhibiting the growth of skin cancer cells from UV rays, lowering blood pressure, helping weight loss, improving fertility, and so on. And its pharmacological actions can reflect these effects well.

Modern pharmacology of black sesame seed

1. It has anti-aging effect, which can postpone the aging phenomenon in experimental animals;

2. Linoleic acid contained can reduce blood cholesterol level and prevent and treat atherosclerosis;

3. Linoleic acid can inhibit the adrenal cortex function to a certain degree in experimental animals;

4. Linoleic acid can reduce blood sugar, increase glycogen content in liver and muscle, but decrease glycogen content in large doses;

5. Fatty oil contained can lubricate intestines and relieve constipation.

Proven black sesame herbal remedies

Based on Chinese Materia Medica, it is sweet in flavor and neutral in properties. It covers three meridians of liver, spleen, and kidney. Basic functions are tonifying liver and kidney, enriching blood to boost essence, and loosening bowel to relieve constipation. Key black sesame seeds uses and indications are liver-kidney deficiency induced dizziness and tinnitus, flaccid lower back and knee, premature graying hair, dry skin, intestinal dryness and constipation, less milk during lactation, carbuncle and eczema, leprosy, scrofula, ulcers, infantile scrofula, burns, and hemorrhoids. Recommended black sesame seeds dosage is from 9 to 15 grams in decoction, tea pills, or powder.

This is a nutritional herb that can boost essence and nourish blood. It is neutral, sweet, delicious, and good for food therapy. One of its representatives is Fu Sang Zhi Bao Dan, or Sang Ma Wan, which comes from Shou Shi Bao Yuan (Protection of Vital Energy for Longevity). This formula combines it with Sang Ye (White Mulberry Leaf) for the treatment of dizziness, premature graying, and weakness of limbs due to kidney essence and blood deficiency or liver and kidney deficiency.

Simple but effective black sesame seeds recipes

As you can see, this is a good healthy vegetable for food and medicine at the same time. Here are some useful tips and convenient cooking recipes for your reference.

1. Sesame walnut porridge. Ingredients: black sesame seed 50g, walnut 100g, and right amount of rice. Directions: smash them together, add in rice and water, and then cook congee. This recipe nourishes liver and kidney and has therapeutic effect for secondary brain atrophy.

2. Sesame fungus tea. Ingredients: raw sesame 30g, fried sesame 15g, and fried black fungus 30g. Directions: grind them into powder and fill the powder into a bottle for future use. 5 grams each time for making tea with boiling water is highly recommended. This tea has therapeutic effect on hemafecia due to blood heat or dysentery as it can cool blood and stop bleeding.

3. Sesame honey. Ingredients: honey 15g, black sesame seed oil 5g, and warm boiled water. Directions: blend them well and take them before breakfast. This recipe works for constipation.

Black sesame seeds side effects and contraindications

Good as black sesame seeds are for hair, overdose or misuse may speed up the hair loss rate and lead to endocrine disorders, manifested as oily scalp, withering hair follicles, or even baldness. And because it can cause diarrhea, its oil cake after oil expression is toxic to livestock and can cause adverse reactions such as cramps, tremors, difficulty breathing, flatulence, cough and suppression. Excessive feeding on calf can cause eczema, hair removal and itching. TCM wise, use it with care in the case of poor appetite and loose stool.

You don’t reveal your inner self to many people, because you find it difficult to trust. But once you feel that trust, you would protect the people you love with your life.

Your mother

The moon sign represents the safety (or lack thereof) you received from your mother when you were a baby, how you were fed and nourished.

We give love the way we learned to receive love.

It’s very likely that you had a very difficult childhood, but your strength and perseverance gave you the capacity to rise above circumstances which could crush just about anybody else.

When your trust is betrayed, so you become very suspicious and divided.

During your childhood your mom was always extremely emotional and tormented, unfortunately she was far from happy. She used to hide her feelings and with her you learned to not share your feelings with others.

She didn’t give you much nourishment because she was busy with her own suffering.

You were always trying to read what was going on in your mothers mind, and this made you very intuitive; you can often see through others’ falseness or dishonesty.

Your eating habits

Because everything about you is extreme, you could overeat or just eat nothing depending on what is going on in your life. When an emotional distress upsets you, you are likely to eat a lot to numb the intensity of your feelings. As a result your weight tends to fluctuate as well.

But once you decide to change, you’re very determined and you can transform your dietary habits in an extreme way, like becoming a vegan overnight for example.

Your physical imbalances

Your weaknesses are in the colon, the cells in the body (renewable), hormones levels and digestion, for women the reproductive system.

When you are angry or bottling your feelings you can suffer constipation as well.

How to neutralize the imbalances and optimize your health

You could benefit from using one tablespoon of Chia in a glass of water; drink it daily. Mix well so the Chia doesn’t get stuck. When Chia seeds start to expand, drink. This is a colon cleanser, which helps to absorb nutrition, which isn’t absorbed as well when you colon is blocked, it also helps avoid buildup of waste toxins.

A high fiber diet is important to you, eat lots of brown rice, bran, oats, chia, hemp seeds, nuts, prunes, pears, beans (navy beans are the best) and lentils.

Drink 4 ounces of Aloe Vera before breakfast, which is a good cleanser for your reproductive system.

And drink cranberry juice, sugar free and non-concentrate.

Express your emotions! It’s vital for your physical and emotional health. When you are upset, your immune system fails and you can be prone to illnesses. Sprinkle cayenne pepper in your food everyday for your immune system.

You can fight disease very easily and you have the inner ability to renew your organs and cells like nobody else.

“The only way out of the labyrinth of suffering is to forgive.”

The Fleischmann’s Yeast ad claimed that adolescent pimples stemmed from “sluggish intestinal action” and a deficiency in Vitamin A, both of which could allegedly be remedied by consuming two cakes of Fleischmann’s High-Vitamin Yeast daily. The ad promised visible skin improvement in “30 days or less,” citing over 6,000 units of Vitamin A per serving and anecdotal testimonials from teens.

At the time, vitamins were a relatively new frontier in nutrition science. Vitamin A was known to support skin health, and yeast—rich in B vitamins and some A—was marketed as a cure-all for everything from constipation to “internal fatigue.” However, the American Medical Association criticized such ads for unverified medical claims. The Federal Trade Commission eventually pressured Fleischmann’s to tone down its health assertions.

Modern dermatology does not support yeast as a reliable acne treatment. While nutrition plays a role in skin health, acne is primarily caused by excess oil production, clogged pores, bacterial growth, or hormonal fluctuations. Vitamin A derivatives (like retinoids) are still used today—but topically, not through yeast cakes.

Dermatologists now recommend a range of evidence-based products such as Zapzyt Acne Treatment Gel (that kills acne-causing bacteria); Pharmagel Pharma Clear (that unclogs pores and reduces inflammation); Neutrogena Stubborn Acne Spot Treatment (that targets redness and post-acne marks); and Differin Gel (that promotes cell turnover and prevents clogged pores). For moderate to severe or hormonal acne, dermatologists may also prescribe antibiotics or hormonal meds taken orally.

--------------------------------------------------

The pitch for yeast has evolved from “clear skin in 30 days” to “nutritional powerhouse in a sprinkle.” Today, nutritional yeast (often called nooch) is widely promoted for several alleged health benefits, especially among plant-based eaters and wellness enthusiasts. The promoted benefits include energy boost, immune support, gut health, heart health, pregnancy support, and support for skin, hair and nails.

Rich in protein and fiber and gluten-free, yeast does add a cheesy, umami flavor to vegan dishes. However, more research is needed to confirm health claims.

On my many trips to York I have often passed by the painted sign on this side wall for Bile Beans.

I always visualised Bile Beans as being an inferior alternative to those produced in a delicious tomatoey sauce by Mr Heinz and thought the tag underneath about keeping you ‘healthy, bright-eyed and slim’ was along the lines of the rhyme we all knew from school. You know the one –

‘Beans Beans, they’re good for your heart

The more you eat the more you fart

The more you fart the better you feel

So, eat beans with every meal.’

It turns out though, that Bile Beans weren’t something you had on your toast or with a pie and mashed potato but were rather a quack medicine. They weren’t beans in the way we think of them, as the beans being referred to were actually bean shaped pills.

Bile Beans were the invention of a charlatan and con man called Charles Edward Fulford, a Canadian who had moved to Australia. Fulford had worked for a time in a pharmacists and had obviously seen that there was money to be made in medicine, potions, and cure-alls. While in Australia he teamed up Ernest Albert Gilbert, who ran a stationary business in New South Wales, and they decided to set up as medicine and pill manufacturers. Their first foray into the world of miracle cures was ‘Gould’s Tiny Tonic Pills’. These were purported to cure everything from ‘female weakness’ to ‘influenza’ to ‘lack of ambition’. However, the pills were not a success, so Fulford came up with another formula and a new name – ‘Chas Forde’s Bile Beans’.

Bile Beans were advertised as having been created by Charles Forde, an eminent and skilled scientist. He had carried out research into a natural vegetable substance used by the Aboriginal people to keep themselves healthy and through this research had come up with a wonder pill to cure many ailments. Charles Forde did not exist, both he and his research being made up by Fulford.

Through a huge advertising campaign under the catchy slogan of ‘Bile Beans for Biliousness’ (Yeah, Beanz Meanz Heinz is so much better), the sale of Bile Beans took off and soon they were being sold all over the world. In 1899 Fulford and Gilbert opened a factory in Leeds to produce their quack product and kept on with their huge advertising campaign. Amongst the various claims made for Bile Beans were that they would cure constipation, indigestion, piles, anaemia, headaches, loss of appetite, heavy colds, rheumatism, liver trouble, bad breath, could rid the bowels and blood of impurities and could help you stay slim.

So, what did this wonder drug do and what was really in it you may ask? Well, it would appear that the pills acted as a laxative and according to analysis when they were examined for the British Medical Council, they contained aloin (plant extract used as a laxative), cardamom, peppermint oil, wheat flour and extract of colocynth (colocynth being a tropical fruit also called bitter apple, which also appears to have laxative effects).

As the success of Bile Beans grew, they attracted several imitators. One of these being George Davidson, who was producing a product in Edinburgh called Davidson’s Bile Beans.

In 1905 Fulford and Gilbert sought an injunction against Davidson to stop him using the Bile Beans name claiming the name was a registered trademark that they had acquired. The evidence was then presented to the Court of Session in Edinburgh where it was admitted to the Judges hearing the case that Charles Forde did not exist and the formula for the pill was written by Fulford, who was not an eminent scientist and had made no research into the Australian herbs he claimed made up the ingredients of the pill. When the case had concluded a written judgement was made by the Judges, who ruled against Fulford and Gilbert, stating in rather scathing terms that – ‘…the complainers (Fulford and Gilbert’s) trade was a fraudulent trade, and that no action ought to be entertained by the courts of Scotland to protect it or the name used in connection with it…’

However, despite the ruling against them, Bile Beans continued to be sold up until the 1980s, when the product was withdrawn from sale and manufacture ceased.

Both Fulford and Gilbert became rich men through the sale of Bile Beans and other dubious products. When Gilbert died in 1905, aged 30, he left an estate worth around £31,000 (nearly £4,000,000 in today’s money) and when Fulford died in 1906, aged 36, it was reported that he was worth over £61,000 (around £8,000,000 in today’s money). Given that they both died in their thirties, it would seem that their product didn’t do much good in keeping either of them healthy and bright eyed.

Here's the story - a persimmon tree with not-quite-ripe fruit suffers a broken branch (top of picture) and it would appear that some kind of animal was climbing in the tree to get to the fruit.

Furthermore, that animal left a dropping near the base of the tree.

The location is semi-rural suburbia, but suburbia nevertheless.

What kind of animal? It is a vegetarian, climbs trees, and would seem to weigh 200-300 lbs or so based on turd morphology.

Yikes! A bear in the back yard? In Silicon Valley? Surely not? It is very unlikely but it might just be possible - given the proximity of this backyard to extensive open space areas which connect to the coastal range. The Grizzly became thoroughly extinct in these areas many decades ago, but the smaller black bear is another matter....

These keto tortillas are definitely delicious and perfect to make quesadillas and tacos combined with your choice of meat and veggies.

Servings: 10 tortillas

Ingredients:

1 cup coconut flour

4 tablespoons psyllium husk powder

½ cup softened butter, coconut oil, or grass-fed lard

¼ teaspoons garlic powder

¼ teaspoons cumin

½ teaspoons red chili powder

2 cups hot broth or hot water

Procedure:

1.Add all dry ingredients to a bowl. Mix well.

2. Add butter and/or coconut oil and mix thoroughly.

3. Pour hot broth into the bowl and stir with a spoon until the butter is melted and everything is well incorporated.

4. Roll dough into a log shape. Cut into 8 equal parts.

5. Grease a griddle, cast iron skillet, or frying pan lightly with butter or coconut oil, then heat to medium heat.

6. Shape each part into a ball. On a sheet of parchment paper, take each ball and roll out as well as you can. If necessary, use a piece of parchment paper on top of the dough, as well. If the dough tears, it is easily fixed. Just keep working with it. Your goal is to get it spread out evenly.

7. Grab a medium size pan lid, place it on top of the dough, twist, and lift. You will get perfectly round tortillas.

8. Lift the parchment paper and place the tortilla over your hand, peeling the paper off with your other hand.

9. Continue doing this until all of your dough is used. Don’t forget to use the excess dough to roll together for more tortillas.

10. Put into the hot griddle until the bottom begins to brown, then flip. Cook both sides until nice and browned, remove, and enjoy.

11. Use these to make quesadillas, tacos, and many other recipes!

Pāpala kēpau or Umbrella catchbird tree

Nyctaginaceae (Four O'Clock family)

Indigenous to the Hawaiian Islands

Oʻahu (Cultivated)

To drink, I had the "Larutan Penyegar Kaki Tiga", known in Chinese as 三个脚 犀牛水 Three-Legs brand Rhino Water, so called because of the picture of a rhino on the bottle and the Three Legs as a brand.

It is supposed to be a Chinese herbal drink made with ground rhino horns, but modernised to include orange and honeydew flavours! We used to drink the plain stuff as kids for the sugary heck of it :)

I doubt if the modern version has any rhino horn in it... or at least I hope not!

The preparation is a traditional medicine which gives a cooling effect in body heatness, flu, gingivitis, sore throat, constipation.

Best Natural Treatment For Haemorrhoids

We have a nice crop of wild burdock, that provides us with wonderful, medicinal roots.

MEDICINAL QUALITIES OF BURDOCK

Burdock Root contains a number of medicinal properties that have been used for hundreds of years. Traditionally herbalists all over the world use Burdock Root as a blood purifier. It is the root of the Burdock plant that is harvested for folk medicinal use. The roots are about an inch wide but up to three feet long and are best dug in July. They should be lifted with a beet-lifter or a deep-running plough, due to the long tap root. As a rule they are 12 inches or more in length and about 1 inch thick; sometimes, however, they extend 2 to 3 feet, making it necessary to dig by hand. They are fleshy, wrinkled, crowned with a tuft of whitish, soft, hairy leaf-stalks, grey-brown externally, whitish internally, with a somewhat thick bark, about a quarter of the diameter of the root, and soft wood tissues, with a radiate structure.

Burdock has been used by herbalists worldwide to treat a variety skin diseases such as abscesses, acne, carbuncles, psoriasis and eczema. Burdock can be either taken alone or combined with other remedies, such as Yellow Dock and Sarsaparilla. The beneficial effects of this herb includes increasing circulation to the skin, helping to detoxify the epidermal tissues. Burdock Root has been reported to destroy bacteria and fungus cultures. It is a popular detoxifying agent that produces a diuretic effect on the body which aids the filtering of impurities from the bloodstream. By promoting perspiration, Burdock Root eliminates toxins through the skin. By producing a detoxifying effect, Burdock Root aids blood circulation and produces a variety of positive side effects. As before mentioned, it contains inulin, a carbohydrate that strengthens the liver. The high concentration of inulin and mucilage aids in the soothing effects on the gastrointestinal tract. The high concentration of inulin is helpful for individuals that are afflicted with diabetes and hypoglycemia as it provides helpful sugar that does not provoke rapid insulin production. Inulin, which is very high in Burdock, is a resinoid or camphor-like hydrocarbon that is aromatic, stimulant, expectorant, tonic, stomachic, and antiseptic.

Burdock Root contains polyacetylenes that gives the herb its antibacterial and antifungal properties. It is used as a mild laxative that aids in the elimination of uric acid or gout. It is classified as an alterative, diuretic and diaphoretic. It helps the kidneys to filter out impurities from the blood very quickly. It clears congestion in respiratory, lymphatic, urinary and circulatory systems. Burdock releases water retention, stimulates digestion, aids kidney, liver and gallbladder function. It also functions as an aperient, depurative, and antiscorbutic.

Decoctions of Burdock have also been historically used for soothing the kidneys, relieving the lymphatic system, rheumatism, gout, GI tract disorders, stomach ailments, constipation, catarrh, fever, infection, fluid retention and skin problems. An article in Chemotherapy identified the chemical arctigenin contained in Burdock as an “inhibitor of experimental tumor growth.”

Both European and Chinese herbalists have long considered burdock root's "lightly warming, moistening effect an excellent tonic for the lungs and liver. It reportedly stimulates toxic waste through the skin and urine, improving digestion and is good for arthritis and rheumatism.

Burdock is an aid to circulation because of its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.

A recent study showed that Burdock blocked dangerous chemicals from causing damage to cells, suggesting to the possibility that burdock may help decrease the risk of developing cancer from toxic chemicals.

Some other miscellaneous disorders Burdock Root is good for are:

Helpful in cellular regeneration

Useful in cleansing and treatment of Crohn's disease and diverticulitis

Aids in alleviating distress related to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Useful in the treatment of recovery from Hepatitis

Burdock stimulates the appetite, so modern experts recommend it for anorexia nervosa

Burdock is useful for most of the same needs as Yellow Dock (rumex crispus) and is effective in treating gout and high cholesterol.

Based on many studies with animals exposed to toxic chemicals, the tea very effectively protects the body against cellular damage and abnormal growths. The tea also has powerful anti-inflammatory activity based on studies and reduces liver damage from toxic chemicals. As a mildly bitter-tasting herb, it increases saliva and bile secretion, which aids digestion and cleanses the liver. Burdock root tea can also be applied externally for treating skin conditions.

Health physicians and doctors often talk about preventing #stress. When we talk about stress prevention, it would be worth mentioning that our body is well structured to handle the short term stress. However, when the stress level increases drastically, the problem would have the tendency to convert into a #chronic issue, leading a person to have serious kinds of other #illnesses which are never good to even hear.

When you feel stressed, your #nervoussystem gets directly impacted. In this situation, nervous system instructs adrenal systems to release adrenaline and cortisol. The consistent release of these hormones makes a person unable to think and learn.

Furthermore, higher stress levels cause the liver to release more blood sugar, increasing the risk of type-2 diabetes.

Taking too much pressure from stressful situation can result in faster breathing, short breathing and even #hyperventilation. As a result, the chances of chest infections can increase. Furthermore, faster breathing is perceived by your body as a signal that you are stressed. As a result, nervous system is triggered to release more stress hormones.

And, stress also causes the heart beat rate to increase alarmingly. It means that heart has to work harder, enhancing the chances of heart failure.

Here, it would be worth mentioning that short-term stress is not something to worry about. As a matter of fact, short term stress can boost the #immune-system. However, it’s quite contrary when we talk about long term stress.

Stress can cause dry mouth, indigestion and #gastrointestinal #disorder. #Diarrhea or constipation can also occur as a result of stress because it stimulates the muscles of intestines. Other disadvantages of stress include severe heartburn and ulcer.

The reason of stress

Anything which is bad can cause stress at different levels. If we simplify it, the stress can be resulted due to mental and physical changes which we find hard to anticipate. For instance, environmental changes such as pollution and/or consistent noise can cause great disturbance which we often find hard to cope with. Exposing ourselves to such environmental hostility makes our minds and bodies to work hard to get adjusted. That process of adjustment is attributed to stress. Other kinds of stress include nutritional stress, working postural stress, emotional stress and oral stress.

Oral stress is the kind that basically involves difficulty in biting due to jaw position. As a result, the oral health is devastated.

Stress and its effects on infections

The #cortisol released as a result of short term stress can be helpful when it comes to healing infection and inflammation. However, when the infection turns chronic, the enhanced release of cortisol can be devastating. The immune system gets weaker and body becomes prone to several other serious infections.

Another very dangerous aspect of stress is that it can make the body flush out vital #minerals without which survival of body can become questionable. For instance, release of calcium due to stress can weaken the bones and teeth.

Dried leaves and stems were made into a tea or mixed with niu (coconut) and eaten by early Hawaiians.

Medicinally, pāʻūohiʻiaka was used to treat babies with thrush (ʻea), as a laxative for lepo paʻa (constipation), and for babies with general weakness (pāʻaoʻao). It also was used to help babies and adults with ʻeha makaʻu (frightening pains or aches). The plant was mixed with kalo (taro) leaves and salt for cuts.

Etymology

The generic name Jacquemontia is named in behalf of Victor Jacquemont (1801-1832), a French geologist and botanical explorer.

The specific epithet sandwicensis refers to the "Sandwich Islands," as the Hawaiian Islands were once called, and named by James Cook on one of his voyages in the 1770s. James Cook named the islands after John Montagu (The fourth Earl of Sandwich) for supporting Cook's voyages.
