Health physicians and doctors often talk about preventing #stress. When we talk about stress prevention, it would be worth mentioning that our body is well structured to handle the short term stress. However, when the stress level increases drastically, the problem would have the tendency to convert into a #chronic issue, leading a person to have serious kinds of other #illnesses which are never good to even hear.
When you feel stressed, your #nervoussystem gets directly impacted. In this situation, nervous system instructs adrenal systems to release adrenaline and cortisol. The consistent release of these hormones makes a person unable to think and learn.
Furthermore, higher stress levels cause the liver to release more blood sugar, increasing the risk of type-2 diabetes.
Taking too much pressure from stressful situation can result in faster breathing, short breathing and even #hyperventilation. As a result, the chances of chest infections can increase. Furthermore, faster breathing is perceived by your body as a signal that you are stressed. As a result, nervous system is triggered to release more stress hormones.
And, stress also causes the heart beat rate to increase alarmingly. It means that heart has to work harder, enhancing the chances of heart failure.
Here, it would be worth mentioning that short-term stress is not something to worry about. As a matter of fact, short term stress can boost the #immune-system. However, it’s quite contrary when we talk about long term stress.
Stress can cause dry mouth, indigestion and #gastrointestinal #disorder. #Diarrhea or constipation can also occur as a result of stress because it stimulates the muscles of intestines. Other disadvantages of stress include severe heartburn and ulcer.
The reason of stress
Anything which is bad can cause stress at different levels. If we simplify it, the stress can be resulted due to mental and physical changes which we find hard to anticipate. For instance, environmental changes such as pollution and/or consistent noise can cause great disturbance which we often find hard to cope with. Exposing ourselves to such environmental hostility makes our minds and bodies to work hard to get adjusted. That process of adjustment is attributed to stress. Other kinds of stress include nutritional stress, working postural stress, emotional stress and oral stress.
Oral stress is the kind that basically involves difficulty in biting due to jaw position. As a result, the oral health is devastated.
Stress and its effects on infections
The #cortisol released as a result of short term stress can be helpful when it comes to healing infection and inflammation. However, when the infection turns chronic, the enhanced release of cortisol can be devastating. The immune system gets weaker and body becomes prone to several other serious infections.
Another very dangerous aspect of stress is that it can make the body flush out vital #minerals without which survival of body can become questionable. For instance, release of calcium due to stress can weaken the bones and teeth.

Dried leaves and stems were made into a tea or mixed with niu (coconut) and eaten by early Hawaiians.
Medicinally, pāʻūohiʻiaka was used to treat babies with thrush (ʻea), as a laxative for lepo paʻa (constipation), and for babies with general weakness (pāʻaoʻao). It also was used to help babies and adults with ʻeha makaʻu (frightening pains or aches). The plant was mixed with kalo (taro) leaves and salt for cuts.
Etymology
The generic name Jacquemontia is named in behalf of Victor Jacquemont (1801-1832), a French geologist and botanical explorer.
The specific epithet sandwicensis refers to the "Sandwich Islands," as the Hawaiian Islands were once called, and named by James Cook on one of his voyages in the 1770s. James Cook named the islands after John Montagu (The fourth Earl of Sandwich) for supporting Cook's voyages.

The snakes are immersed in 100% rice wine in special glass bottles and then they are sealed and stored in a cellar for five years. The wines, containing substances necessary for the human body, are high quality tonics. Regularly drinking appropriate quantities of the wines can moisturize your skin, improve your appetite, and strengthen your bones, tendons and muscles. They are used to treat general fatigue, hair loss, migraine headaches, rheumatism, and neurasthenia. The tonic wines do not cause dryness syndrome, such as constipation, thirst, dryness of the throat and nose. People of all ages and both sexes, including pregnant women, can drink them in four seasons. ;))))

Jamaican cerassee is native to Africa, the Middle East and the Mediterranean area. Jamaican cerassee was introduced to Brazil by African slaves and from there Jamaican cerassee spread to the rest of Latin America and the West Indies. Today Jamaican cerassee is a staple in Jamaica, where Jamaican cerassee grows wild. Jamaican cerassee also grows wild in Asia where Jamaican cerassee is used medicinally, and as a vegetable. A Jamaican cerassee tea made of the vine is used for diabetes, hypertension, worms, dysentery, and malaria and as a general tonic and blood purifier. Jamaican cerassee is also very effective to relieve constipation and colds and fevers in children.

The Fullerton Arboretum is a 26 acre botanical garden with a collection of plants from around the world, located on the northeast corner of the California State University, Fullerton campus in Fullerton, California, in the United States.
It is the largest botanical garden in Orange County, with a collection of over 4,000 plants. The Arboretum saves species that are extinct or near extinction and serves as a learning place for agricultural history.
The Arboretum officially was created in 1976, and officially opened in 1979.
The arboretum, which was originally a diseased orange grove, was transformed into organic gardening plots.
A centerpiece of the Arboretum is the Heritage House, which was built in 1894 as the home and office of Fullerton's pioneer physician, Dr. George C. Clark.
In 1972 the house was moved to what is now the middle of the Arboretum.
The restored house now serves as a museum of family life and medical practice of the 1890s.
Edible Parts: Flowers; Fruit.
Edible Uses: Coloring; Tea.
Fruit - raw or cooked. The flavor of the raw fruit is not acceptable to many tastes, though when cooked it makes delicious jams, preserves, pies and so forth. It can be used fresh or dried, the dried fruit being less bitter. The fruit is used to add flavor and color to preserves, jams, pies, sauces, chutneys etc., it is also often used to make wine. The fruit is about 8mm in diameter and is borne in large clusters. Some caution is advised, see the notes below on toxicity. Flowers - raw or cooked. They can also be dried for later use. The flowers are crisp and somewhat juicy, they have an aromatic smell and flavor and are delicious raw as a refreshing snack on a summers day, though look out for the insects. The flowers are used to add a muscatel flavor to stewed fruits, jellies and jams (especially gooseberry jam). They are often used to make a sparkling wine. A sweet tea is made from the dried flowers. The leaves are used to impart a green coloring to oils and fats.
CAUTION: The leaves and stems are poisonous. The fruit of many species (although no records have been seen for this species) has been known to cause stomach upsets to some people. Any toxin the fruit might contain is liable to be of very low toxicity and is destroyed when the fruit is cooked.
MEDICINAL USES: Anti-inflammatory; Aperient; Diaphoretic; Diuretic; Emetic; Emollient; Expectorant; Galactogogue; Hemostatic; Laxative; Ophthalmic; Purgative; Salve; Stimulant.
Elder has a very long history of household use as a medicinal herb and is also much used by herbalists. The plant has been called 'the medicine chest of country people'. The flowers are the main part used in modern herbalism, though all parts of the plant have been used at times. Stimulant. The inner bark is collected from young trees in the autumn and is best sun-dried. It is diuretic, a strong purgative and in large doses emetic. It is used in the treatment of constipation and arthritic conditions. An emollient ointment is made from the green inner bark. The leaves can be used both fresh or dry. For drying, they are harvested in periods of fine weather during June and July. The leaves are purgative, but are more nauseous than the bark. They are also diaphoretic, diuretic, expectorant and hemostatic. The juice is said to be a good treatment for inflamed eyes. An ointment made from the leaves is emollient and is used in the treatment of bruises, sprains, chilblains, wounds etc.. The fresh flowers are used in the distillation of 'Elder Flower Water'. The flowers can be preserved with salt to make them available for distillation later in the season. The water is mildly astringent and a gentle stimulant. It is mainly used as a vehicle for eye and skin lotions. The dried flowers are diaphoretic, diuretic, expectorant, galactogogue and pectoral. An infusion is very effective in the treatment of chest complaints and is also used to bathe inflamed eyes. The infusion is also a very good spring tonic and blood cleanser. Externally, the flowers are used in poultices to ease pain and abate inflammation. Used as an ointment, it treats chilblains, burns, wounds, scalds etc.. The fruit is depurative, weakly diaphoretic and gently laxative. A tea made from the dried berries is said to be a good remedy for colic and diarrhea. The fruit is widely used for making wines, preserves etc., and these are said to retain the medicinal properties of the fruit. The pith of young stems is used in treating burns and scalds. The root is no longer used in herbal medicine but it formerly had a high reputation as an emetic and purgative that was very effective against dropsy. A homeopathic remedy is made from the fresh inner bark of young branches. It relieves asthmatic symptoms and spurious croup in children. The German Commission E Monographs, a therapeutic guide to herbal medicine, approve Sambucus nigra for cough and bronchitis, fevers and colds
OTHER USES: Compost; Cosmetic; Dye; Fungicide; Hedge; Hedge; Insecticide; Litmus; Microscope; Musical; Pioneer; Pipes; Repellent; Wood.
The plant is a valuable addition to the compost heap, its flowers are an alternative ingredient of 'QR' herbal compost activator and the roots of the plant improve fermentation of the compost heap when growing nearby. The leaves are used as an insect repellent, very effective when rubbed on the skin though they do impart their own unique fragrance. They can be powdered and placed amongst plants to act as a deterrent, or made into a spray when they act as an insecticide. This is prepared by boiling 3 - 4 handfuls of leaves in a liter of water, then straining and allowing to cool before applying. Effective against many insects, it also treats various fungal infections such as leaf rot and powdery mildew. The dried flowering shoots are used to repel insects, rodents etc.. The flowers are used in skin lotions, oils and ointments. Tolerant of salt-laden gales, this species can be grown as a shelter hedge in exposed maritime areas, it is rather bare in the winter though. This is an excellent pioneer species to use when re-establishing woodlands. It is very tough and wind-resistant, grows quickly and provides shelter for longer-lived and taller woodland species to establish. It will generally maintain itself in the developing woodland, though usually in the sunnier positions. A dye is obtained from the fruit and the bark. The bark of older branches and the root have been used as an ingredient in dyeing black. A green dye is obtained from the leaves when alum is used as a mordant. The berries yield various shades of blue and purple dyes. They have also been used as a hair dye, turning the hair black. The blue coloring matter from the fruit can be used as a litmus to test if something is acid or alkaline. It turns green in an alkaline solution and red in an acid solution. The pith in the stems of young branches pushes out easily and the hollow stems thus made have been used as pipes for blowing air into a fire. They can also be made into musical instruments. The pith of the wood is used for making microscope slides and also for treating burns and scalds. The mature wood is white and fine-grained. It is easily cut and polishes well. Valued highly by carpenters, it has been used for making skewers, mathematical instruments, toys etc..

Vitamin B12 is a water soluble vitamin, essential for proper red cell formation, neurological function and DNA synthesis. Its deficiency is very common affecting 1.5-15% of the general population, the cause being unknown. Its deficiency results in anemia, fatigue, weakness, constipation, weight loss, neurological problems like tingling and numbness in hands and feet, neuropathy, poor memory, confusion and sore mouth.
Maternal vitamin B12 deficiency is associated with the increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes like low birth weight babies, premature delivery and neural tube defects i.e. defects affecting the brain and spinal cord of the fetus. During infancy it could result in lack of weight gain, delayed development of milestones, poor mentation and megaloblastic anemia.
The natural sources of vitamin B12 are fish, meat, poultry, eggs and milk products, fish and red meat being excellent sources. Vegetarian diet is a poor source of the vitamin.
Maternal vitamin B12 levels gradually decline throughout the normal pregnancy, thus requiring its supplementation during the pregnancy. Exclusively breastfed infants depend on maternal reserves for their nutritional needs. A women who is on a vegetarian diet is not able to meet the neonatal requirements of vitamin B 12. As a result the baby may suffer from significant neurological damage. Thus such babies often require supplementation to prevent the effects of its deficiency.
The recommended daily allowance of vitamin B 12 for healthy adult is 2.4 mcg whereas that during pregnancy and lactation is 2.6 – 2.8 mcg.
The neurological symptoms of vitamin B 12 deficiency can occur without anemia, as a result early diagnosis and treatment is essential to prevent irreversible damage. There are various formulations available for vitamin B 12 supplementation like oral , sublingual or injectable, depending upon the individual case requirement. Appropriate consultation with the physician is advised for management of the problem.

Pāpala kēpau or Umbrella catchbird tree
Nyctaginaceae (Four O'Clock family)
Indigenous to the Hawaiian Islands
Oʻahu (Cultivated)
The early Hawaiians used an adhesive gum from pāpala kēpau for repairing bowls.
The milky sap from pāpala kēpau was used for cuts. The cooked leaves were used to cure pāʻaoʻao (childhood disease with physical weakening) and for lepo paʻa (constipation).
Pāpala kēpau are truly fascinating plants with a sad, but interesting, cultural history. A sinistral use for the sticky fruit was to trap native birds. [6] The captured victims provided feathers for the strikingly colorful cloaks (capes), helmets, lei, images and kāhili. Birds such as 'ō'ō and mamo were plucked of their few moulting yellow feathers and set free to grow more for the next season. However, this was not the case with the 'i'iwi and 'apapane which were covered with red- or green-colored feathers and would not have survived the plucking. They were captured, plucked and eaten.
The former generic name Pisonia is named for William Piso (ca. 1611-1678), Dutch physician, pharmacist, botanist, and early writer on medicinal plants of Brazil.
The specific epithet umbellifera is from the Latin umbelliferum, umbel-bearing or shade carrying, from umbrella (altered from umbell), Latin for parasol, and named for the large leaves of this species.

(I put my seeds right in my vitamix before adding the other smoothie ingredients and it grinds them for me)
"Golden Flaxseed can be mixed into 10 to 12 oz. of juice or water (make sure you take plenty of liquids). The suggested minimum daily intake is 1/4 cup of flaxseed ground to a meal. The most beneficial amount for maximum nutritional value of the Flaxseed is to take 2 tablespoons both in the morning and evening.
Those with diabetes, diverticulitis, diverticulosis, insomnia, and chronic constipation should take 2 tablespoons of finely ground flaxseed 30-40 minutes before each meal for the maximum health benefit. Finely ground Flaxseed gently cleanses out any wrinkles and pouches that trap bacteria in the G.I tract, and it lubricates the whole intestinal system.
Those with insomnia will find that Flaxseed will stabilize blood sugars for a more restful sleep.
Weight Control is another wonderful benefit! Flaxseed acts as a bulking agent and swells 3-4 times its size when ingested. Take 2-3 tablespoons of ground flaxseed stirred into 10-12 oz. of juice or water 30-40 minutes before meals.
Flaxseed oil is the richest source of the omega 3 fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid. This fatty acid is considered essential, meaning your body cannot make it but requires it and so must derive all of it from the diet. The average American diet is sorely lacking in this healing fat.
Golden Flaxseed is unique in that 48% of its total fat content is omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3 fatty acids are necessary for proper infant growth and development, especially important in the formation of a healthy nervous system, and to help keep that nervous system functioning properly.
Flaxseed oil has been shown to be useful in the treatment of multiple sclerosis, behavioral problems such as attention deficit disorder, depression, and bipolar disorder in adults and children1,2,3. Omega 3 fats are also important in modifying the body’s inflammatory response, making them very helpful in the treatment of inflammatory diseases like allergies, asthma, arthritis and eczema4,5. Studies have shown that omega 3 fats can lower blood pressure, “bad” cholesterol, and triglycerides by as much as 25% and 65%6,7. It’s impact on the number one killer in our country, heart disease, might be it’s most exciting health benefit.
Flax (Linum usitatissimum) is a beautiful blue flowered plant grown on the plains of Central Canada and the North Central United States. Medical research has taken great interest in flaxseed. Study after study confirms that the oil and fiber components of the flaxseed are wonderfully health promoting and are curative for many disease states."

Now for my disclaimer: I don't buy the brand shown any more, although I did at first. Now I buy it in bulk in the supermarket and store the seeds in my refrigerator for a longer shelf life. Flax seed oil will go rancid very quickly, so I don't bother with that, and the seeds have additional healthful qualities not found in the oil. My other magic smootie ingredients are greek yogurt (so high in protein!, zero fat) and pomegranate juice along with blueberries (frozen usually) and whatever fresh fruit catches my fancy.

In Ayurveda, a healthy digestive system is referred to as the mainstream of our well-being. The root cause of most of the diseases is inefficient digestion. The metabolic energy of digestion called ‘agni’ helps in eliminating the body wastes and toxins. It breaks down the dense physical matter into subtle energy, which the body needs to generate internal warmth as well as produce a clear mind.
Understanding the Digestive Process
To help you understand this process better, let’s think of our digestive system as a juicer, the body toxins as fruit waste, ‘agni’ as the juicer blades and energy as juice! If the juicer blades are weak, less juice is produced and there is more fruit waste left over.
Similarly, when this ‘agni’ (juicer blade) is weak, there is not enough digestive power to metabolize food into energy (juice), resulting in more toxins (fruit waste) getting accumulated in the cells. Thus, a stronger ‘agni’ (better juicer blades) is required for a good digestive system. An easy way to support this digestive ‘agni’ is through the power of Yoga!
How Does Yoga Improve Your Digestive System?
Yoga synchronizes exercises with the rhythmic breathing in the body. Breathing ushers life force into the body and cleanses it of toxic materials formed due to wrong diet, unhealthy lifestyle and accumulated stresses. It improves ‘agni’, creates body balance and longevity while rejuvenating the whole system.
Benefits of Yoga
• A light and supple body
• A body that is alert and active
• Strong bones and muscles
• Reduction of fat
• Increased physical strength
• Improved appetite
• Increased capability to cope with fatigue
Yoga poses to aide digestion
1. Trikonasana – Improves digestion stimulates appetite and alleviates constipation.
2. Paschimottanasana – Relieves digestive problems like constipation.
3. Pawanmuktasana – Improves gastrointestinal problems.
4. Ardha Matsyendrasana – Massages the abdominal organs, thus alleviating digestive problems.
5. Ustrasana – Stretches the stomach and intestines, alleviating constipation.
A good digestive system is the key to a healthy lifestyle. Physical ailments like constipation, stomach ache, ulcers, acnes, pimples and bloating can be kept at bay if one’s digestive system is in a good condition.
Here are some important tips and long-term remedies that will aid digestion:
• Avoid drinking water half an hour before and after the meal
• Avoid eating heavy meals at night and overeating as well
• Do not lie down immediately after having your meal
• Avoid eating junk food or oily food
• Consume fibrous food
• Avoid irregular food timings
• Be happy and stay away from a stressful lifestyle
• Practice yoga regularly
Skipping meals or popping antacid tablet are not advisable. While it is difficult to bring a radical change in our day-to-day lifestyle, certain measures can be adopted to rejuvenate the digestive system and strengthen it.
Yoga is a time-tested technique for effectively restoring the body to optimum condition – naturally, and without making any major alterations in lifestyle. Simply practicing these basic yoga postures which can relax your abdominal organs and following these simple habits can help improve the functioning of the digestive system and restore your system back to an optimum level!
A ameixa fresca é indicada contra as hemorróidas e a hipocondria.

Colon cancer is one of the deadliest types of the disease, and this is partly because, among all types, it has the mildest symptoms. Causing no obvious symptoms especially at the early stages, most cases are diagnosed when lesion cancerous change already occurs. At this point, the disease is already in its advanced state and may already be harder to treat.
The physical signs of this disease arise gradually over time, making it difficult for doctors to diagnose it correctly. Most of these symptoms are felt only when the disease is already about to do significant damage to the colon. Thus, timely, quick, and accurate diagnosis is of extreme importance for sufferers.
Common Colon Cancer Symptoms
The main colon cancer symptoms include abdominal pain and discomfort that are often mistaken for digestive tract problems. The patients can experience one or all of the following:
1. Constipation
It is the condition when the person is facing difficulties for passing the stool. In the early stage the waste material in the colon becomes very mushy and this mushy waste can easily get accumulated around anything that gets in its way. But as the time get near to the end of the colon these accumulated waste material solidifies and creates problems for passing it out. There are possibilities of tumor in the rectum's far end and due to this reason the person can face difficulties in moving the fecal things through it. Therefore Constipation can also be a symptom out of several other colon cancer symptoms.
2. Thin stool
The thin stool from the body can easily indicate that some obstacles are there which don't allow the proper passing of the waste material from the body. If the stool can't remain in the mushy form and comes out through the colon region, the stool's shape can provide you information about the problem inside your body. The obstacle which stops the waste material in the body can be a tumor. So, the thin stool coming out from the body is considered as the second symptom among several other colon cancer symptoms.
3. Stomach cramps
Sometimes there becomes blockage in your stomach due to the tumor which causes problem in passing, solids, liquids, and even gas due to the blockage strictness. Finally it results in abdominal cramps that can be severe and the blockage can also stop the flow of blood to the colon. If there are Painful cramps occurring in your stomach it may also indicate that a tumor has perforate and it is a medical emergency. Thus this is also one of the colon cancer symptoms found now-a-days.
For tumors localized in the rectal area, the disease may also be accompanied by rectum irritation, anus pain, or difficulty in defecating. These may also cause dysentery, enteritis, and hemorrhoids.
In the Advanced Stages
The most common symptom of the advanced stages is the development of an irregular abdominal mass with a hard texture. In some cases, such as in transverse and sigmoid colon cancers, the mass can cause pain even at light pressure.
Patients in the late stages of the disease may also experience anemia or the heightened absorption of toxins. These may be accompanied by edema, hepatomegaly, ascites, cachexia, and hypoproteinemia, among many others.
All symptoms of the disease, as can be observed, are linked to painful sensations. Thus, if not diagnosed early, the patient can suffer greatly throughout the course of the disease. A cancer hospital in China specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease, including that of the colon, to make sure patients are given the best possible quality of life in their condition.
These lei are only given at major life passages, or "moving on" - not as decoration or celebration or appreciation.
'Pandanus odoratissimus' Ripe fruits fill the air with a pleasant aroma, much like flowers. The fruit is healthy and can be eaten raw or cooked. It is a major source of food in Micronesia, especially in the atolls. The fibrous nature of the fruit also serves as a natural dental floss. The tree's leaves are often used as flavoring for sweet dishes such as kaya jam, and are also said to have medicinal properties, the oil to cure headaches and the flowers to cure constipation.
The fibers on inner ends of dry keys are used as brushes for painting kapa/tapa. They also contain tasty seeds which are difficult to remove.
These ends of hala fruit are often strung to make leis.

Today in Weight Watchers we discussed the benefits of walking. I'm starting an 8 week training program and then will enter my first 5K. I need to quit smoking first but who wants to be around someone who is dieting and trying to quit smoking - NO ONE !
Here's a list of some of the benefits of walking :
Managing your weight. Combined with healthy eating, physical activity is key to any plan for long-lasting weight control. Keeping your weight within healthy limits can lower your risks of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer, sleep apnea, and osteoarthritis.
Controlling your blood pressure. Physical activity strengthens the heart so it can pump more blood with less effort and with less pressure on the arteries. Staying fit is just as effective as some medications in keeping down blood pressure levels.
Decreasing your risk of heart attack. Exercise such as brisk walking for three hours a week — or just half an hour a day — is associated with a 30% to 40% lower risk of heart disease in women. (Based on the 20-year Nurses' Health Study of 72,000 female nurses.)
Boosting "good" cholesterol – the level of high-density lipoproteins (HDL). Physical activity helps reduce low-density lipoproteins (LDL or "bad" cholesterol) in the blood, which can cause plaque buildup along the artery walls — a major cause of heart attacks.
Lowering your risk of stroke. Regular, moderate exercise equivalent to brisk walking for an hour a day, five days a week, can cut the risk of stroke in half, according to a Harvard study of more than 11,000 men.
Reducing your risk of breast cancer and type 2 diabetes. The Nurses' Health Study also links regular activity to risk reductions for both these diseases. In another study, people at high risk of diabetes cut their risk in half by combining consistent exercise like walking with lower fat intake and a 5% to 7% weight loss.
Avoiding your need for gallstone surgery. Regular walking or other physical activity lowers the risk of needing gallstone surgery by 20% to 31%, found a Harvard study of more than 60,000 women ages 40 to 65.
Protecting against hip fracture. Consistent activity diminishes the risk of hip fracture, concludes a study of more than 30,000 men and women ages 20 to 93.
The list goes on and on. Many other studies indicate a daily brisk walk also can help:
Prevent depression, colon cancer, constipation, osteoporosis, and impotence
Lengthen lifespan
Lower stress levels
Relieve arthritis and back pain
Strengthen muscles, bones, and joints
Improve sleep
Elevate overall mood and sense of well-being
