Piles, also known as hemorrhoids, is a common medical condition affecting millions of people worldwide. It occurs when the veins in the rectal area become swollen and inflamed, causing discomfort and pain.

While piles can occur at any age, the risk of developing this condition increases as you age. This is because the tissues supporting the rectum and anus weaken, making it easier for the veins to swell and become painful. Other factors that can increase the risk of developing piles include pregnancy, obesity, a low-fiber diet, and chronic constipation.

Symptoms of piles can vary from person to person, but the most common ones include rectal bleeding, itching, and discomfort in the anal region. In some cases, piles can also cause severe pain and discomfort, making it difficult to sit or have a bowel movement.

If you suspect you have piles, it is important to seek medical attention immediately. A doctor can diagnose the condition and recommend appropriate treatment based on the severity of your symptoms. In most cases, mild cases of piles can be treated with home remedies, such as increasing fiber intake, drinking plenty of fluids, and using over-the-counter creams or ointments.

However, if the condition is severe or has been ongoing for a long time, medical intervention may be necessary. Treatment option,s may include prescription medications, such as corticosteroids or painkillers, or surgical procedures, such as hemorrhoidectomy or rubber band ligation.

In conclusion, piles can be a painful and uncomfortable condition, but it is important to seek medical attention promptly to prevent the condition from worsening. With the right treatment, most cases of piles can be successfully managed, allowing you to live a comfortable and pain-free life.

CAUSES OF PILES:

Excessive Straining While Emptying Bowels Effect: Swelling and Inflammation of Anus Veins Symptoms: Difficulty Passing Stools, Bleeding, Pain

Experiencing difficulty passing stools, bleeding, and pain during bowel movements can be a result of excessive straining. This behavior causes the veins around the anus to become swollen and inflamed. It is essential to address this issue to prevent further discomfort and complications.

Chronic Constipation

Chronic constipation is a leading cause of piles and fissures. When you experience this condition for an extended period, it can lead to frustration and excessive straining during bowel movements.

3.The Challenges of Obesity: Obesity poses various challenges and health implications. One significant consequence of obesity is the increased likelihood of developing piles among individuals who suffer from constipation.

Being pregnant: can result in chronic constipation and pelvic complications that make passing stools challenging without prolonged straining. This straining can lead to piles.

Potential Risks of Regular Heavy Lifting

Regular heavy lifting can have negative effects on the pelvic and anal region. The strain caused by lifting heavy weights may result in the swelling of veins around the anus, leading to the development of piles. In addition, this type of lifting can increase the risk of bowel incontinence

Overindulging in Spices

Overindulging in spices may not be the root cause of hemorrhoids, but it can exacerbate an already existing condition. Consuming excessive amounts of spicy food, for instance, can irritate the rectum during bowel movements, causing excruciating pain and discomfort.

While Ayurvedic remedies for hemorrhoids can assist in managing the condition, seeking medical advice is recommended in the event of extreme pain and bleeding.

Furthermore, accurate diagnosis is critical for effective treatment since hemorrhoids come in various forms, and each necessitates a distinct treatment approach. If you are unable to identify the symptoms, it is advisable to consult with a doctor.

Ayurveda’s Take on the Digestive Concerns Relating to Piles:

Ayurveda associates piles, fissures, and related digestive issues with the three Doshas - Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. According to Ayurveda, each individual has a unique combination of Doshas, and the dominance of two Doshas determines their digestive concerns.

For instance, low levels of Vata and Pitta Doshas are usually associated with piles, and Ayurvedic medicines aim to balance the Dosha levels and improve the body's digestive fire, known as Agni.

Vata Dosha governs the body's movements, and its imbalance can cause dryness in the bowel contents, resulting in constipation and painful black haemorrhoids. On the other hand, Pitta Dosha is hot and excessive levels can lead to diarrhoea, excessive thirst, and inflamed bleeding haemorrhoids. Kapha Dosha, being cold and heavy, can cause large light-colored haemorrhoids when imbalanced.

In summary, Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of balancing the three Doshas to maintain healthy digestion and prevent digestive concerns such as piles and fissures.

How to Manage and Prevent Haemorrhoids Naturally?

1-

Title: Importance of Not Ignoring Your Urge to Go to the Bathroom

Content: One of the basic requirements of maintaining good health is to attend to our body’s natural urges promptly. Ignoring the urge to use the bathroom, whether it is to urinate or defecate, can lead to various health complications. Here are some reasons why you should not hold your urges, particularly when it comes to bowel movements:

Avoid Hard and Dry Stool

When we ignore the urge to pass stool, the stool remains in the bowel for a longer period. As a result, the moisture from the stool gets absorbed, making it hard and dry. Passing such a hard stool can be painful and uncomfortable. Moreover, it can lead to constipation, which can cause abdominal pain, bloating, and other digestive issues.

Prevent Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the rectum or anus that can cause discomfort, pain, and bleeding. Straining to pass stool when there is no natural urge can increase the pressure on the venous cushion in the rectum. This can lead to the development of hemorrhoids, which can be quite uncomfortable and difficult to manage.

Therefore, it is important to heed the body's natural urges to go to the bathroom. While it may be difficult to take a break from our busy lives, we must prioritize our health and well-being. By attending to our body's natural urges promptly, we can prevent health complications and maintain optimal digestive health

2-

IMPROVE YOUR DIET.

To maintain a healthy digestive system and prevent haemorrhoids, it's important to improve your diet. Avoid fried, salty, processed, and high-fat foods, as well as red meat, chocolate, candy, alcohol, and sugary drinks. Instead, increase your fibre intake by consuming beans, lentils, fruits, and vegetables. Staying hydrated by drinking more water can also prevent piles..

3-

EXERCISE REGULARLY.

Regular exercise can prevent digestive concerns and bowel problems. A sedentary lifestyle can slow down bowel movements and cause haemorrhoids. Moderate physical activity helps stool move comfortably out of the bowel. Brisk walking, sprinting, cycling, or Yoga are good options to keep your digestive tract healthy. If you have existing haemorrhoids, avoid heavy weight-lifting, squatting, or exercises that pressure the abdomen.

How can Ayurvedic medicine help in treating piles and fistula?

Ayurveda takes a comprehensive approach to manage and treat piles and fissures. The aim is to bring and maintain the natural balance of the three Doshas and to benefit the overall health.

Adding to that, some helpful herbs can make effective Ayurvedic medicines for haemorrhoids.

1. Touch-me-not plant

The touch-me-not herb has been recognized for its medicinal properties in the treatment of bleeding piles. It contains mimosine, an alkaloid known for its pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties.

Ayurvedic practitioners and Vaidyas have recommended the use of touch-me-not plants for treating piles since ancient times. To achieve optimal results, a paste made from touch-me-not leaves can be externally applied to the affected area. Kerala Ayurveda's Pilogest capsules incorporate touch-me-not and other beneficial herbs to alleviate symptoms and prevent future occurrences.

TRIPHALA:

Triphala, a combination of three powerful herbs namely Amalaki, Bhibhitaki, and Haritaki, can provide long-term relief from piles. This herbal mixture is known for its efficacy in alleviating constipation, which in turn reduces the risk of straining and developing piles. Its unique composition makes it an excellent ingredient for promoting smooth bowel movements.

3. Guggul for piles

Guggul, also known as Balsamodendron Mukul, is a highly effective anti-inflammatory herb in Ayurvedic medicine. It can assist in reducing inflammation, managing hemorrhoids, and offering quick and long-lasting relief from piles.

Guggul has both laxative and astringent properties, which aid in the metabolism of the bioactive etiologic elements of hemorrhoids. This aids in the elimination of toxins (Ama) and improves digestive health.

Key Takeaways

Haemorrhoids can cause pain and inconvenience, and lifestyle changes and a healthy diet are essential for managing them.

Piles may result from factors such as bowel strain, constipation, obesity, pregnancy, low-fibre diet, and excessive consumption of spicy food.

Ayurveda suggests that an imbalance in the three Doshas may contribute to the development of piles.

Natural tips can assist in managing and preventing haemorrhoids, and several Ayurvedic herbs are beneficial for treating piles and fissures.

6.Do the same thing with the Gruyere cheese, one small handful at a time.

7.Add salt and pepper to taste.

8.Serve with veggies, low-carb crackers, or throw on some low-carb nachos.

These keto tortillas are definitely delicious and perfect to make quesadillas and tacos combined with your choice of meat and veggies.

Servings: 10 tortillas

Ingredients:

1 cup coconut flour

4 tablespoons psyllium husk powder

½ cup softened butter, coconut oil, or grass-fed lard

¼ teaspoons garlic powder

¼ teaspoons cumin

½ teaspoons red chili powder

2 cups hot broth or hot water

Procedure:

1.Add all dry ingredients to a bowl. Mix well.

2. Add butter and/or coconut oil and mix thoroughly.

3. Pour hot broth into the bowl and stir with a spoon until the butter is melted and everything is well incorporated.

4. Roll dough into a log shape. Cut into 8 equal parts.

5. Grease a griddle, cast iron skillet, or frying pan lightly with butter or coconut oil, then heat to medium heat.

6. Shape each part into a ball. On a sheet of parchment paper, take each ball and roll out as well as you can. If necessary, use a piece of parchment paper on top of the dough, as well. If the dough tears, it is easily fixed. Just keep working with it. Your goal is to get it spread out evenly.

7. Grab a medium size pan lid, place it on top of the dough, twist, and lift. You will get perfectly round tortillas.

8. Lift the parchment paper and place the tortilla over your hand, peeling the paper off with your other hand.

9. Continue doing this until all of your dough is used. Don’t forget to use the excess dough to roll together for more tortillas.

10. Put into the hot griddle until the bottom begins to brown, then flip. Cook both sides until nice and browned, remove, and enjoy.

11. Use these to make quesadillas, tacos, and many other recipes!

Looking up through the cooling racks there are pumpkins, cats and bats.

Most of these are going to be for trick or treaters.

But some will be sent to my nephew who is poorly. He has such a bad diet, he won't eat fruit or veg and has ended up in hospital with severe er... digestive problems (thinking of a tactful way to put constipation!). So I wanted to send him something to make him feel a bit better both physically and emotionally. He loves my cookies so I thought I'd take stealth measures to make them a bit healthier. I experimented with my chocolate sugar cookie recipe with half the sugar I normally use, and added 1 crumbled up Weetabix (for the fibre), wholemeal flour, and whizzed up 6 apricots, 6 dates and a cup of mixed seeds (sunflower, pumpkin, linseed & sesame) into tiny pieces in the food processor, and added those too.

They taste yummy actually! I just hope my nephew will eat them without realising they're good for him...

The bend at the hepatic flexure collapses every night or traps an air bubble, preventing BMM (Big Mass Movement, the big motility that comes along every 1,5 hours) to move matter from ascending colon into traverse colon. The ascending colon swells, pain, awakening and insomnia. A fibre restricted diet, eating non-gas causing foods (FODMAP), eating early in the day and having a walk in the evening, together with rotating positions when in bed, prolong the sleep from 4,5 hours to 6 hours. Mindfulness during the day plus anti-dustmite measures prevent a severe stress-reaction at night, when wakened. Swelling and awakening still occur but turning on side and belly is enough to fall asleep again. No more insomnia. But still no sound sleep.

www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/phones-toilet-just-dont-sit-18081...

We all use phones on the toilet. Just don't sit more than 10 minutes.

Let's get this out of the way upfront: Plenty of people use portable devices - phones, chiefly, but also mobile gaming consoles like the Nintendo Switch and the Steam Deck - while on the toilet. There's a good chance, in fact, that you're reading this article on the toilet.

Incredibly, a few surveys have been conducted on the subject. In one conducted by NordVPN earlier this year, 65 percent of respondents (of 9,800 adults surveyed) said they used their phones in the bathroom. But it also just feels anecdotally true. The habit isn't a new one; people have kept books and magazines by the porcelain throne for decades. With ever-smaller and more portable devices in our pockets, it seems intuitive that we would turn to those devices in a quiet moment.

"Look, there are two types of people in the world," said Nir Eyal, an author and lecturer who writes about habits, focus and human behavior. "People who check their phone in the bathroom, and people who lie about checking their phone in the bathroom."

The practice is normally kept behind locked bathroom doors and left politely undiscussed. But in October, there was a vibe shift, brought about by the release of "Marvel Snap," a new card game available on phones and tablets. "Marvel Snap is the best game to play on the toilet currently," tweeted popular streamer and content creator Saqib "Lirik" Zahid to his almost 650,000 followers. "I hate Marvel Snap and so does my toilet seat," blared a headline on the video game website VG247. And although full disclosure may not be desired by readers of an article like this one, I feel compelled to say: I too play "Marvel Snap" on the toilet. I'm Spartacus!

Which prompted the question: Is it healthy to sit on the toilet with a phone? I turned to a gastroenterologist for answers.

"You generally don't want to spend more than about on average about 10 minutes," said Dr. Roshini Raj, a gastroenterologist at NYU Langone, and the author of "Gut Renovation," a book about digestive health. Though Raj acknowledged that - like with many things in medicine - there's not a one size fits all answer, she pointed to three potential pain points for preoccupied poopers.

First, sitting for prolonged periods of time could lead to hemorrhoids, sometimes-painful swollen veins in the anal area. Some of that comes down to the unique functional design of the toilet.

"There's a hole in the middle," Raj said. "And so the actual anal rectal area is hanging a little bit lower than the part that's supported - your thighs. Just by that position, gravity is causing everything to hang a bit, and that is causing pressure on the veins. So even if you're not straining, if you're just sitting there thinking of something else, doing something else, there is some pressure being applied to those veins."

More subtly, there's also the risk of your body starting to ignore its own signals. Peristalsis is the name for the progressive contractions that move stool through the intestine to the rectum. But sitting on the toilet for long periods of time not doing anything can hinder that process.

"If you're sitting for too long and not going to the bathroom, that kind of process actually stops," Raj said. "Your body can start to not recognize those signals as well, so it can lead to constipation if you're sitting for prolonged periods of time on the toilet without actually having a bowel movement." This risk, Raj noted, is more likely to be one of many factors in issues like constipation, rather than the driving force.

Then there's the most obvious factor: bathrooms can be gross. Research shows that a toilet flush can aerosolize pathogens, spreading them to nearby surfaces. That can include your phone, if you rest it on a sink by the toilet, for example. But even beyond aerosolized bacteria, there are risks posed by plain old bad hygiene.

"I see a lot of people who get food poisoning or catch different things by not having good hygiene practices in the bathroom," Raj said. If you're playing video games or using your phone on the toilet, you're probably touching a lot of things you might not want on your device. "I just think generally speaking, if you're on the toilet having a bowel movement or trying to have a movement, you shouldn't be using your fingers on anything else."

If you're staying within healthy time limits and - crucially - always maintaining good personal hygiene, your behavior probably doesn't need to change. But if you'd like to make a change, there are some simple ways to go about it.

For starters, don't assign a moral valence to staying in the bathroom for too long, cautioned Eyal, the author and lecturer. The rumination on the behavior can be "more mentally damaging for our mental health than the behavior itself," he said. Just be intentional about your behavior, setting plans for what you do in certain settings.

"There's nothing wrong with taking your phone to the bathroom for a few minutes and doing your business and then coming out," Eyal said. "But if you said, 'Oh, I planned to be with my kids, but now I stayed in the bathroom for 30 minutes scrolling on TikTok or Instagram,' well, now you're distracted, because you planned to do something and now you're not doing it. So that's the best piece of advice: to know what you wanted to do with your time so that you have a priority to spend your time doing that thing, rather than wasting it in the bathroom."

It's also important to remember: phones and other mobile devices aren't inherently bad, nor are they insurmountably distracting. If you find yourself perpetually losing track of time, consider whether you're attuned to bigger stressors in your life, and to how you're feeling in general.

"90% of the time that we get distracted by our phones in particular is because of what's happening inside of us," Eyal said. "Boredom, loneliness, fatigue, uncertainty, stress, anxiety. These sensations lead us to look for escape from our present reality. And so one of the important things to do with this problem, just like any distractions, is to ask ourselves: What am I escaping when I go to the bathroom for 30 minutes? What feeling am I trying to not feel by hanging out on my phone[?] . . . Is it my kids are driving me crazy? Is it work is too hard? Is it that I'm bored, I'm listless, I'm stressed, and now I can take my mind off of those problems?

"The fact of the matter is, if we don't deal with that, if we don't know how to deal with that in a healthy manner, I think we will always find a distraction."

So remember: Think about how you're spending your time, and wash your hands. And if you're playing "Marvel Snap," do no more than two matches if you're doing number two.

Pregnancy symptom - Most important signs and symptoms of pregnancy Signs and symptoms of pregnancy. In addition to a missed period, the earliest signs and symptoms of pregnancy might include. Tender, swollen breasts. Early in pregnancy, hormonal changes might make your breasts tender, sensitive or sore. Or your breasts might feel fuller and heavier. Nausea and vomiting. Morning sickness, which can strike at any time of the day or night, sometimes begins as early as, three weeks after conception. While the cause of nausea during pregnancy isn't clear, pregnancy hormones likely play a role. Increased urination. You might find yourself urinating more often than usual. fatigue. Fatigue also ranks high among early symptoms of pregnancy. During early pregnancy, levels of the hormone progesterone soar — which can make you feel sleepy. Food aversions or cravings. When you're pregnant, you might find yourself turning up your nose at certain foods. Food cravings are common, too. Pilot's Account

Baby born on board an Indigo flight Yesterday. Capt was Wg Cdr Mishra (Retd) now flying with Indigo

Surreal experience to witness a miracle in the air yesterday

Went through full range of emotions as the situation kept unfolding rapidly

It started with the lead informing me that the lady on seat 1C, is an expectant mother feeling a little restless…and that she had not eaten anything since morning

She was comforted and was given fluids and something to eat

A while later her anxiety and restlessness increased. She also started complaining if stomach pain

As the situation was developing, I asked the lead to page for a doctor

By sheer Providence and divine destiny of this would be new-born, there were two very accomplished doctors on board

One of them Dr Nagaraj, is a plastic surgeon who works in King Fahd hospital in Riyadh and the other Dr Shailaja a Gynaecologist and an Obstetrics surgeon, heading the fetal medicine department in Cloud Nine hospital

We were near Jaipur, cruising at FL 390

She was initially diagnosed with Gastric pain or just Constipation and the doctors felt that she would be fine

However her discomfort and restlessness kept getting worse. Both doctors were in constant attendance. I spoke to the lady doctor who assured me that she is watching her carefully

A little later North of Bhopal, came to know that she has started bleeding followed by the shattering news that she has suffered an abortion

Forward galley and the Lav were swiftly and efficiently converted into a makeshift ward/ labour room taking all precautions by an excellent team of cabin crew who rose to the requirements of the occasion

They were very brilliantly supported by several Captains and Crew travelling ACM and Dead Head

I was waiting for one final update from the doctors to decide on my next course of action

As I was mulling over this disheartening piece of news, heard and noticed sudden increase in the activity levels in the cabin… screaming… shouting… clapping and a faint cry of what sounded like a new born…It was a baby boy!!😀😀

From a feeling of deep sadness…it turned to a feeling of intense joy…never witnessed fortunes turning so swiftly and so miraculously!!

Don't think there was a single soul on board who didn't have goose bumps on him or her at this moment

So the youngster was born on Cloud Nine with the help of a doctor from Cloud Nine!!😀

The baby was premature and there was not much clarity on how many months pregnant she was…could have been anything…she had earlier mentioned 5 months??

My decision making skills were getting tested with rapidly unfolding situations!!

Although the doctors confirmed to me that the mother and child are doing well… things could again worsen any moment!!

Nagpur was 500m in TS…Indore had a closure…HYD was the best option to divert in case of any new contingency

At the bottom of my heart, I was hoping and praying that the youngster holds on for another hour and a bit…he did well…much better that expected at his ripe old age of 5mins!😊😊

I didn't want her to land up in Hyderabad in this Covid times and with a premature baby…she was travelling alone

In my address to the passengers I informed them that "We have an extra passenger on board…"

POB was also revised…plenty of congratulatory calls on air on Nagpur, Chennai and Bangalore frequencies!

Nagpur gave me direct BL552 for Bangalore 27L from just south of Bhopal…enjoyed the uninterrupted high speed run!

Post landing Birth on Board form was filled…don't think it has ever been filled in a domestic flight in India ever…and it is most appropriately titled FFS 007 😉😉

On ground amidst all the frenzy, I could sense a genuine sense of happiness and joy amongst all present, KIAL staff, Aster Clinic staff…in all the gloom surrounding us, people were looking for a reason to celebrate and they got one…!!

There were banners, chocolates, gifts…and the brave mother was given a rousing reception!

Met 007! Had a look at his face…of course he was unaffected by all the commotion around him…by now he was an hour and a half old…😎

As for me…I couldn't have asked for a happier Air Force Day eve!!🙏🙏

Luke had a midnight ordeal at the vets(so did we) after i decided he might have urethral obstruction.. it turned out to be constipation..

not funny :)

--------------

oh well...right after i wrote the above(the other day)..things started looking close to my initial suspicion..he did have trouble peeing after all..i gave him cranberry juice..which was very hard to do..because kitties hate it.. it did help looks like..at least a bit.. after another visit to the vet.. kitty Luke is now on pills and doing fine..hope it will not be anything reoccurring....he/they will be on a slightly changed diet... i learned on Flickr how serious this problem can turn out if they have crystals in the urine (which is still not clear in this case..it might be bacterial)..so it is important to act fast....

the cranberries for kitties are available in powdered form..

-----

they had blood and urine checked two weeks ago..so the vet was surprised..but she said stress can cause those things (well..just a guess)..we are moving and they are definitely noticing..

ok, i just thought cat owners may benefit from this info..i learned many things on flickr :)

Toddy - served in small clay jugs. One jug holds around 3 glasses for a person. Tastes nice...and helps in clearing your stomach if you got a constipation

This is california coffeeberry, Rhamnus californica. Note the purplish stems, the ellipitcal entire (no teeth) leaves that are slightly yellowish. 8 species of Rhamnus occur in California, this is the main one used for medicine, along with cascara sagrada, Rhamnus purshiana, which occurs in Mendocino county and north.

The bark is peeled on the 2nd to 3rd year old stems cut into 2-4 inch pieces and stored for making teas, tinctures. Tradition has it that one should store for up to 8 months to enhance the activity and reduce cramping, but it also works fresh.

Add other ingredients such as orange peel, ginger, yellow dock, burdock, to enhance flavor and reduce bitterness. Yerba santa was added to mask bitterness in pharmacy shops of the early 20th century.

Start with 1/2 cup of the tea before bed time, then go up to 1-2 cups if the effect is too mild. An enhanced bowel movement should occur the next morning.

The herb is also very useful for "draining dampness and heat" according to the system of traditional Chinese medicine. This is determined by looking at the tongue by determining If the coating towards the middle and back is yellow and somewhat thick, indicating pathogenic heat and dampness.

Indications: constipation, diarrhea (after gaining experience with its action), acne, boils, predisposition to inflammations and infections of organs in the lower abdominal cavity--hepatitis, colitis, vaginitis (with caution and experience)

In today's story and sketch "by me" we see Mandrake Gofish piloting his Liftglide transporter away from

Sanita City the home to one of the finest medical facilities in the galaxy. We shall start at the beginning,

that being when the young Mandrake Gofish was living with his pet monkey Marv, on Lippo the Blue Moon.

Mandrake was working on the development of a new Medical Moon Pie. Seems there was a lot of

medications being over prescribed to the little grey alien population, like little Grey Blood Pressure

Pills, Antidepressants, and such. Which was causing severe constipation to the Blue Moon inhabitants.

It seems Marv, Mandrakes monkey also suffered from Anxiety constipation, when ever he flew around the Galaxy

with Marv, which caused her, yes Marv is a female Moon Monkey, severe Constipation. Mandrake noticed one

afternoon, May 15th was the date, after returning from a short trip over to Earth, Marv had scurried off

into the back of there crater, and was munching on what Mandrake had never noticed, the Ground Lemon

plants fruit. Mandrake just thought Marv was hungry, but was surprised when after a few minutes,

Marv had an extreme purgative experience, (bowel movement). And in just a few minutes was back to her

usual happy bouncy monkey ways. The very next morning, Mandrakes went to visit his brother Kellogg Gofish

who was very helpful, (Kellogg had invented the graham cookie) used in many of the best selling moon pies.

Mandrakes told Kellog what had happened to his Monkey Marv after consuming a few of the Ground Lemons.

Kellog was of course interested, loaned Mandrake enough credits to do further research, and grow

enough of the fruit for Medical Moon Pie Production. Mandrake changed the name of the lemons to Mayapples,

thinking it sounded better than Ground Lemons. And now after many, many a century, you see the Sanita

Constipation Clinic, here just outside Boulder Co. And now health seekers, from around the galaxy, come

to Sanita, to enjoy the Mayapple Moon Pies, and Purge, (Sanita was Mandrake and Kellogg's mothers name)

Who herself was it seems always grouchy and constipated, (but that is a story for another time).

I feel lucky to capture this beautiful poppy today, because the wind was blowing about between 15-20 mph and the flower was moving a lot. Opium Poppy

With its array of colors ranging from white to pink to red to purple to blue, the poppy is a flower that has graced gardens around the world. Yet the juice from this botanical beauty has sparked wars, created incalculable wealth, and wreaked indescribable suffering upon millions.

HISTORY

A man collecting opium sap from a pod.

The poppy plant, Papaver somniferum, produces opium, a powerful narcotic whose derivatives include morphine, codeine, heroin, and oxycodone. The term “narcotic” refers to opium, opium derivatives, and their semi-synthetic substitutes. Narcotics are used therapeutically to treat pain, suppress cough, alleviate diarrhea, and induce anesthesia. However, they are some of the most addictive substances known to man. As misused drugs, they are often smoked, sniffed, or injected.

The earliest reference to opium growth and use is in 3,400 B.C. when the opium poppy was cultivated in lower Mesopotamia (Southwest Asia). The Sumerians referred to it as Hul Gil, the "joy plant." The Sumerians soon passed it on to the Assyrians, who in turn passed it on to the Egyptians. As people learned of the power of opium, demand for it increased. Many countries began to grow and process opium to expand its availability and to decrease its cost. Its cultivation spread along the Silk Road, from the Mediterranean through Asia and finally to China where it was the catalyst for the Opium Wars of the mid-1800s.

Today, heroin’s long journey to drug traffickers begins with the planting of opium poppy seeds. Opium is grown mainly by impoverished farmers on small plots in remote regions of the world. It flourishes in dry, warm climates and the vast majority of opium poppies are grown in a narrow, 4,500-mile stretch of mountains extending across central Asia from Turkey through Pakistan and Burma. Recently, opium has been grown in Latin America, notably Colombia and Mexico. The farmer takes his crop of opium to the nearest village where he will sell it to the dealer who offers him the best price.

THE SILK ROAD

The Silk Road is an 18th-century term for a series of interconnected routes that ran from Europe to China. These trade routes developed between the empires of Persia and Syria on the Mediterranean coast and the Indian kingdoms of the East. By the late Middle Ages, the routes extended from Italy in the West to China in the East and to Scandinavia in the North. Opium was one of the products traded along the Silk Road.

A map of the Silk Road from 200 B.C. - 300 B.C

OPIUM WARS

To fund their ever-increasing desire for Chinese produced tea, Britain, through their control of the East India Company, began smuggling Indian opium to China. This resulted in a soaring addiction rate among the Chinese and led to the Opium Wars of the mid-1800s. Subsequent Chinese immigration to work on the railroads and the gold rush brought opium smoking to America.

OPIUM DENS AND PARAPHERNALIA

Opium dens were established as sites to buy and sell opium. Dens were commonly found in China, Southeast Asia, the United States, and parts of Europe. Chinese immigrants came to the United States in the Mid-1800s to work for railroads and the Gold Rush and brought the habit of opium smoking with them. Opium dens sprang up in San Francisco's Chinatown and spread eastward to New York. Browse the images below to learn more about equipment used to smoke, measure, and weigh opium for centuries.

Opium Smoking Equipment: In addition to the traditional pipe, opium smokers could also use a lamp for heating the opium as well as various tools to manipulate the gummy substance.

Opium weights shaped like elephants

Weights and Scales: These scales and the elephant-shaped gold weights were used to accurately measure opium for sale.

MEDICAL USE: AN ANCIENT MEDICINE

Opium was known to ancient Greek and Roman physicians as a powerful pain reliever. It was also used to induce sleep and to give relief to the bowels. Opium was even thought to protect the user from being poisoned. Its pleasurable effects were also noted. The trading and production of opium spread from the Mediterranean to China by the 15th century. Opium has many derivatives, including morphine, codeine, oxycodone, and heroin. Browse the images below to learn more about each derivative.

Oxycodone is synthesized from thebaine, a third component of opium. Like morphine, it is used for pain relief. Oxycodone is taken orally. When misused, the tablets are crushed and snorted or dissolved in water and injected.

Opium (and the majority of its derivatives, with the exception of heroin which is Schedule I), is listed as a Schedule II controlled substance because of its medical benefit but potential for misuse. However, various opium derivatives manufactured in combination with other medical substances (like Tylenol with Codeine) may be assigned to Schedule III, IV, or V under the Controlled Substances Act. Click here to review detailed descriptions of the drug schedules.

A bottle of morphine

Morphine: In 1803, morphine, the principal ingredient in opium, was extracted from opium resin. Morphine is 10 times more powerful than processed opium, quantity for quantity. Hailed as a miracle drug, it was widely prescribed by physicians in the mid-1800s. Morphine is one of the most effective drugs known for the relief of severe pain and remains the standard against which new pain relievers are measured.

Bottles of codeine

Codeine: Codeine, another component of opium, is medically prescribed for the relief of moderate pain and cough suppression. It has less pain-killing ability than morphine and is usually taken orally. As a cough suppressant, it is found in a number of liquid preparations.

Two bottles of heroin

Heroin: First synthesized from morphine in 1874, the Bayer Company of Germany introduced heroin for medical use in 1898. Physicians remained unaware of its addiction potential for years, but by 1903, heroin misuse had risen to alarming levels in the United States. All use of heroin was made illegal by federal law in 1924.

A toppled bottle of Oxycodone

Oxycodone: Oxycodone is synthesized from thebaine, a third component of opium. Like morphine, it is used for pain relief. Oxycodone is taken orally. When misused, the tablets are crushed and snorted or dissolved in water and injected.

FORMS

A loaf of bread with poppy seeds

Poppies as Food: Besides being used for drug manufacturing, the poppy is also the source of poppy seeds which are greatly prized as food. Items such as poppy seed bagels and lemon poppy seed cake are sought after for their delicious flavors.

A McCormick bottle of poppy seeds

Poppy Seeds for Cooking: Poppy seeds for use in cooking can be purchased at local markets. The majority of poppy seeds used for food come from the opium poppy, Papaver somniferum. Although these seeds do have opium content, the amount used for cooking purposes is extremely small. Consumption of poppy seeds can produce a positive result on drug tests.

Opium poppy flowers growing in a garden

Poppies for the Garden: Poppy flowers come in a variety of colors and are prized for the beauty they bring to the landscape. In several states, various species of poppies are planted along the sides of highways for erosion control, for example, the red corn poppy (Papaver rhoeas). Although the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) has the highest concentration of narcotics, all poppies in the Papaver genus do contain some amount of narcotic.

EFFECTS ON THE BODY

A bottle of pills spilled over

Good Effects of Opiates: No other substance has been found to be as effective as opiates for the management of extreme pain. In addition to its analgesic qualities, it is a very effective cough suppressant, anti-diarrhea medication, and sleep-inducer.

A graphic outlining the bad effects of opiates on the human body

Bad Effects of Opiates: The major drawback of opiate use is the potential for misuse and addiction. Effects include drowsiness, slurred speech, confusion, memory loss, pupil constriction, dilation of the blood vessels causing increased pressure in the brain, constipation, nausea, vomiting, weight loss, fatigue, hallucinations, sexual dysfunction, convulsions, and respiratory depression. Effects from using non-sterile needles and adulterants mixed with opiates include skin, lung, and brain abscesses, endocarditis (inflammation of the lining of the heart), infected and collapsed veins, and diseases such as hepatitis and HIV.

THE HEROIN MOLECULE

Opium from poppy plants contains several natural alkaloids including morphine and codeine. All opiates share the same basic molecular structure, with just a slight change in the end molecules to differentiate heroin from morphine, codeine, oxycodone, and other varieties.

HEROIN CHANGES THE BRAIN

After heroin use is stopped, symptoms like depression, abnormal mood swings, insomnia, psychosis, and paranoia remain. These brain scans show a reduction in dopamine receptors which control judgment and behavior. This reduction is a result of regular heroin use.

HOW HEROIN WORKS

Heroin binds to receptors in the brain and produces feelings of euphoria. Its structure mimics that of a natural neurotransmitter and taps into the brain’s communication system, interfering with the way nerve cells normally send, receive, and process information. This similarity in structure “fools” receptors and allows the drugs to lock onto and activate the nerve cells. Below is a model of an opiate chemical attaching to a receptor in the brain.

HARVESTING OPIUM POPPIES

The milky fluid that seeps from cuts in the unripe poppy seed pod has, since ancient times, been scraped off and air-dried to produce what is known as opium. The seedpod is first incised with a multi-bladed tool. This lets the opium “gum” ooze out. The semi-dried "gum" is harvested with a curved spatula and then dried in open wooden boxes. The dried opium resin is placed in bags or rolled into balls for sale.

LEGAL PRODUCTION OF OPIUM

Legal growing of opium for medicinal use currently takes place in India, Turkey, and Australia. Two thousand tons of opium are produced annually and this supplies the world with the raw material needed to make medicinal products.

Mallinckrodt, one of the pharmaceutical companies licensed to deal in legal poppy production, uses crates such as this to ship its poppy products around the world.

HEROIN DRUG TRAFFICKING

Currently, there are three main sources for illegal opium: Burma, Afghanistan, and Colombia. Opium and heroin are ideal trade products–they are in great demand, are very profitable to produce, and the products take up little space. With modern transportation, opium and heroin can be moved from one country to another within days or a few weeks. Opium and heroin have an extensive and stable shelf life, allowing the products to be stored for long periods of time.

DEA is committed to halting the global trafficking of heroin. In 2008, DEA seized 13,719 kilograms (30,245 pounds) of heroin in operations around the world.

The majority of the world’s heroin is produced using the Southwest Asian Method of processing.

Step One: Raw opium that has been collected from poppy pods is mixed with a calcium solution and hot water in large barrels. It is stirred vigorously and allowed to settle for many hours.

Step Two: The clear liquid on the top contains the morphine and is siphoned out into another container. A binding chemical is added, then returned to the barrel and heated. This chemical binds to the morphine causing it to fall to the bottom of the barrel.

Step Three: The contents of the barrel are stirred and filtered out. The residue is dried in the sun resulting in a brown morphine base.

Step Four: Morphine base is combined with another chemical solution and heated until the solution turns black in color. It is then cooled down, quenched with water, and filtered to remove some impurities.

Step Five: In a separate container, sodium carbonate is dissolved in water, then added to the morphine base and stirred to create heroin base.

Step Six: The heroin base is mixed with several more chemical solutions, including charcoal and water, and then stirred. It is filtered multiple times to remove the charcoal, and the resulting residue is dried.

Step Eight: The final dried product is white heroin hydrochloride, or powdered white heroin.

COLOMBIAN METHOD

A slightly different processing method is used to make heroin in Colombia. Instead of leaving the opium to dry overnight on the pod, the liquid opium is harvested immediately for processing. The frequent rains in that region necessitate immediate removal of the opium from the pod to prevent it from being washed away. The liquid opium is then mixed with hot water and similar steps to those that are outlined in the Southwest method are used.

Poppies have long been used as a symbol of sleep, peace, and death: Sleep because the opium extracted from them is a sedative, and death because of the common blood-red colour of the red poppy in particular.[16] In Greek and Roman myths, poppies were used as offerings to the dead.[17] Poppies used as emblems on tombstones symbolize eternal sleep. This symbolism was evoked in L. Frank Baum's 1900 children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, in which a magical poppy field threatened to make the protagonists sleep forever.[17] A second interpretation of poppies in Classical mythology is that the bright scarlet colour signifies a promise of resurrection after death.[18]

Red-flowered poppy is unofficially considered the national flower of the Albanians in Albania, Kosovo and elsewhere. This is due to its red and black colours, the same as the colours of the flag of Albania. Red poppies are also the national flower of Poland. The California poppy, Eschscholzia californica, is the state flower of California.[19]

The powerful symbolism of Papaver rhoeas has been borrowed by various advocacy campaigns, such as the White Poppy and Simon Topping's black poppy.

Wartime remembrance

The poppy of wartime remembrance is Papaver rhoeas, the red-flowered corn poppy. This poppy is a common plant of disturbed ground in Europe and is found in many locations, including Flanders, which is the setting of the famous poem "In Flanders Fields" by the Canadian surgeon and soldier John McCrae. In Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand, artificial poppies (plastic in Canada, paper in the UK, Australia, South Africa, Malta and New Zealand) are worn to commemorate those who died in war. This form of commemoration is associated with Remembrance Day, which falls on November 11. In Canada, Australia and the UK, poppies are often worn from the beginning of November through to the 11th, or Remembrance Sunday if that falls on a later date. In New Zealand and Australia, soldiers are also commemorated on ANZAC day (April 25),[20] although the poppy is still commonly worn around Remembrance Day. Wearing of poppies has been a custom since 1924 in the United States.[21] Moina Michael of Georgia is credited as the founder of the Memorial Poppy in the United States.[22][23][24] Wikipedia

Artificial poppies (called "Buddy Poppies") are used in the veterans' aid campaign by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, which provides money to the veterans who assemble the poppies and various aid programs to veterans and their families.[25]
