St Mary Magdalene, Stilton, Cambridgeshire

Another locked church. I was now beginning to realise that the Stilton group of churches was a dead loss, although I had been advised that this one was ordinarily open. A small stone church, everything in proportion, nothing elaborated. There is a large and brave modern extension on the north side facing the main road, which contains the parish rooms. Normally these are hidden away, but here they make a virtue of it, and it is very well done. Still, none of this helped me see inside. In any case, the best feature here is a fine selection of 18th and early 19th Century memorials, a mark of this place’s prosperity when it was a main stopping off point on the Great North Road.

I headed down to the High Street. It is extraordinarily wide. Until 1958 this was the Great North Road, and traffic hurtled through between London and the north. It was superseded by the A1, and when Pevsner came this way he noted an air of dereliction, of Stilton being a dead end place. The A1 in turn was replaced by the A1(M) in the 1990s, and today nobody passes through Stilton. There must be several thousand people in the new estates, but of course they all work and shop in Peterborough. The one attraction the High Street has to offer is the Bell Inn, a lovely stone 17th Century coaching inn, where Stilton cheese was first sold - hence the name. It was never made here of course, it was brought for sale by farmers in the nearby villages of Leicestershire and Northamptonshire. The Inn was derelict in the 1990s, but today has been renovated as a boutique hotel.

Ever one to give a place the benefit of the doubt, I came back to Stilton church the following week, and it was still locked.

Installing the AirField System results in a more stable surface area and a more consistent GMAX across the project.

AirDrain's delivers a 14.7% on cement and a 19% reduction on an aggregate base in GMAX. And that reduction and consistency will stay for the life of the field with AirDrain .

AirDrain all but eliminates infill migration and a floating field, brings a consistent GMAX across the entire field. (which can drastically affect the safety of the project putting owners in an extreme liability risk scenario)

AirDrain Drainage ASTM D 4716 Synthetic Grass and Natural Grass Testing

What drains better than air!

Does your field float or have ponding or infill migration (which is an extreme player safety and owner liability issue) and you can’t figure out why, maybe because they said it would drain X amount per hour and in reality it doesn’t and never will.

Those issues don’t get better they get worse! Countless hours in maintenance and grooming, adding materials etc. etc. what’s the cost of that every month?

Over the years, many architects and engineers have asked us just how fast will the AirDrain grid drain. Our reply has always been that the AirDrain is only limited by what is above it and the exit drains.

Due to the fact that the area of an AirDrain part is 1” inch high and has a 92% air void.

Recently, our AirDrain grid was tested using the ASTM D 4716 Hydraulic Transmissivity Standard Test Method. The testing was done using plates on top and bottom of the AirDrain part, setting them to the required slope and adding water from one end down the slope.

AirDrain was draining so fast they had to modify their testing equipment to accommodate the volume of water AirDrain could move.

by Shauna Gibby

For thus saith the scripture: Choose ye this day, whom ye will serve. (Alma 30:8)

Conference Talk:

For more information on this topic read "Moral Discipline," by D. Todd

Christofferson, Ensign, Nov 2009, 105-8.

Thought:

Moral discipline is the consistent exercise of agency to choose the right because it is right, even when it is hard.

(D. Todd Christofferson, "Moral Discipline," Ensign, Nov 2009, 105-8.)

Song:

"Choose the Right," Hymns, #239.

Scripture:

For thus saith the scripture: Choose ye this day, whom ye will serve. (Alma 30:8)

Lesson:

Ask your family what the consequences are for the following choices:

Touching a hot stove with your bare hand.

Not paying your phone bill for several months.

Going to work late every day.

Write the following sentence on paper large enough for everyone to see and invite your family to rewrite that first situation by filling in the blank: "If you touch a hot stove, then ________."

Remind your family that often gospel principles fit that "if/then" format. It is a reminder that consequences are an important part of agency. Leviticus 26 contains the consequences for obedience and disobedience, and is written in an "if/then" format.

Turn to Leviticus 26:3-4 and ask your family to mark the words if and then. In the same manner, read Leviticus 26:14,16 and mark the words If and I also will. Read together Leviticus 26:3-12 and 14-28. Ask:

What blessings are listed for obedience?

What cursings come when we violate God's commandments?

What do D&C 130:20-21 and 82:10 add to help us understand why this is so?

How does understanding this principle make you feel?

Ask your family:

What do you believe the Lord specifically expects of you?

What promises has He made to you?

Do you believe He will keep those promises if you do what He expects?

Testify to your family that as we keep our promises and witness the Lord

fulfilling His, it increases our faith.

Story:

Elder Howard W. Hunter

I recall a young man in our stake when I served as a stake president. He traveled around with a crowd that thought it was smart to do things that were not right. On a few occasions he was caught in some minor violations.

One day I got a call from the police station and was told he was being held because of a traffic violation. He had been caught speeding, as he had on a few other occasions prior to this time. Knowing that the things he was doing might prevent him from going on a mission, he straightened up, and when he was nineteen years of age he received his call.

I shall never forget the talk we had when he returned. He told me that while he was in the mission field he had often thought of the trouble he had caused by the mistaken belief that the violation of little things was not important. But a great change had come into his life. He had come to the realization that there was no happiness or pleasure in violation of the law, whether it be God's law or whether it be the laws that society imposes upon us.

He said to me, "When I drive a car now and the speed limit is sixty miles an hour, I feel it is morally wrong to drive a single mile faster."

I was impressed by the great change that had come over this young man while he served on his mission and studied moral principles. How unfortunate it is that he had to learn his lesson the hard way, but what a great blessing comes when there is the realization that one cannot be in violation and feel good about that conduct.

Activity:

Use tape or yard to draw a large circle on the floor. This is the den. Pick someone to be the werewolf and stay inside the den.

The object is for the other players to taunt the werewolf by daringly stepping into the den. If the werewolf bites (tags) someone who is completely or partially in the den, then he also becomes a werewolf and helps the first werewolf catch others. The last person caught becomes the werewolf for the next round of play.

Gospel application: When we choose to put ourselves in situations where we can be tempted, we will often get caught. We need to choose to stay far away from the things that are wrong.

The Washington post: Iran preparing internal version of Internet

By James Ball and Benjamin Gottlieb, Thursday, September 20,

Last month, Iran’s communications and information technology minister unveiled a plan to take key government agencies and military outfits offline and onto the new network by the end of September. U.S. security researchers say they are for the first time seeing evidence of an operational network that is consistent with Iran’s publicly stated plans.

One of the most consistently recommended attractions in Rio was the Museu do Amanhã, the Museum of Tomorrow. It's basically a glorified science museum, with a sort of highbrow speculative fiction twist, but really the selling point is the spectacular soaring architecture on the banks of the baía de Guanabara. I thought it looked familiar, but immediately upon seeing it, Lonnie declared that it was basically a Rio version of the Oculus, the new transit center erected near us in downtwon New York after 9/11 by the renowned architect Santiago Calatrava. Smart man, Lonnie: he is also the architect of the Museu do Amanhã..

Answering to any number of names; Conga ant, bullet ant, 24 hour ant, lesser giant hunting ant, the one thing consistent is the pain they cause. In their natural range from Nicaragua to Paraguay, a single stink is likened to being shot with fiery waves of pain which continue unabated for up to 24hrs. It is no wonder then that a sting by a bullet ant is rated a 4+ on the Schmidt pain index, the highest of any insect. Though apparently some tribes, notably the Satere-Mawe of Brazil have put this dubious benefit to their advantage. They gather up a large number of these ants, up to 100 and then sew them into a glove, stingers facing inwards. This is then presented to a boy of the tribe. In order to graduate to manhood he must don the glove and leave it on for a set period of time without crying out. This process is repeated, sometimes 20 times until the tribe is satisfied and the boy has become a man. Fortunately there are other uses and the poneratoxin is currently being studied in modern medicine as a voltage gated sodium channel inhibitor which blocks synaptic transmission in insects though it acts as a smooth muscle agonist in mammals.

These are the largest of the Ponerine ants achieving lengths of 20-30mm long. They display little variation between castes, workers displaying variation only insofar as a normal distribution curve with no specialization. They make nests at the base of trees and forage on the surrounding trees, climbing into the canopy to search for nectar sources and small invertebrates. If they feel their nest is being threatened they release a musky odor and stridulate from a pair of organs in the thorax.

Yesterday the tire flew off my minibus, I cut the head off a pit viper and I was banned from a commercial flight by associating with a narco-trafficker. Today I am bushwhacking through the jungle in the remote trail-less backwaters of Guyana, waist deep in water and praying to make it through the rest of the day alive. What will tomorrow bring? God only knows. The adventure starts here- pbertner.wordpress.com/.

Rara la vita in due fatta di lievi gesti,

e affetti di giornata, consistenti o no,

Tutto l'universo obbedisce all'amore,

come puoi tenere nascosto un amore,

ed è così che ci trattiene,

nelle sue catene,

tutto l'universo obbedisce all'amore?

Come possiamo tenere nascosta la nostra intesa

ed è in certi sguardi che si nasconde l'infinito

Tutto l'universo obbedisce all'amore,

come puoi tenere nascosto un amore,

ed è così che ci trattiene,

nelle sue catene,

tutto l'universo obbedisce all'amore?

Weird? Sure.

This picture is something though. It is a total time machine! Seriously: Zoe looks exactly (_______) like my mom's boyfriend did at the same age, when they were together. Then they were married (I arrive at the very end of their relationship, or just after the end, depending on context).

Consistently seen on menus here in Iceland: things with a sauce they call Bearnaise but clearly is not. Tastes something like a combination of mayonnaise and margarine. I haven't acquired the taste yet!

Nothing if not consistent.

i am trying an experiment in taking consistently interesting pictures on my MacBook's iSight camera. my inspiration comes from Lisa Wiseman's idea that the iPhone is the "new polaroid" because it's portable, easy, and works with a set size and resolution. well, i don't have an iPhone; but given my laptop's lower mobility and positioning options, this should be a really interesting challenge in photographing within fixed technological parameters. i am also going to make an effort to focus on compositions other than the usual this-is-me-at-my-desk PhotoBooth shot, although i'm not going to rule them out.
