The 53rd annual Bon Odori Festival at Camp Zama was held Aug. 4. The festival is consistently the largest bilateral event of the year for U.S. Army Japan, this year attracting more than 30,000 visitors to the installation. The festival featured live entartainment, games for children, a variety of ethnic foods, bilateral sports, and a fireworks show.

There is no consistent distinction between cormorants and shags. The names "cormorant" and "shag" were originally the common names of the two species of the family found in Great Britain, Phalacrocorax carbo (now referred to by ornithologists as the Great Cormorant) and P. aristotelis (the European Shag). "Shag" refers to the bird's crest, which the British forms of the Great Cormorant lack. As other species were discovered by English-speaking sailors and explorers elsewhere in the world, some were called cormorants and some shags, depending on whether they had crests or not. Sometimes the same species is called a cormorant in one part of the world and a shag in another, e.g., the Great Cormorant is called the Black Shag in New Zealand (the birds found in Australasia have a crest that is absent in European members of the species). Van Tets (1976) proposed to divide the family into two genera and attach the name "Cormorant" to one and "Shag" to the other, but this flies in the face of common usage and has not been widely adopted.
The scientific genus name is latinized Ancient Greek, from φαλακρός (phalakros, "bald") and κόραξ (korax, "raven"). This is often thought to refer to the creamy white patch on the cheeks of adult Great Cormorants, or the ornamental white head plumes prominent in Mediterranean birds of this species, but is certainly not a unifying characteristic of cormorants. "Cormorant" is a contraction derived either directly from Latin corvus marinus, "sea raven" or through Brythonic Celtic. Cormoran is the Cornish name of the sea giant in the tale of Jack the Giant Killer. Indeed, "sea raven" or analogous terms were the usual terms for cormorants in Germanic languages until after the Middle Ages. The French explorer André Thévet commented in 1558 that "...the beak [is] similar to that of a cormorant or other corvid," which demonstrates that the erroneous belief that the birds were related to ravens lasted at least to the 16th century.
The word cormorant is pronounced /ˈkɔrmərənt/, with the stress on the first syllable.

We will continue our tour Niagara Falls by heading into Canada to take the Hornblower Cruise boat ride and see an informational movie at the IMAX Theater. We will also ascend the Skylon Tower. The tour then departs for Toronto, ON, one of Canada's largest cities. There we will visit the CN Tower and guests will have the option to take a Lake Ontario Cruise. During the winter when the cruise is not running, we will instead visit Casa Loma. We will have dinner in historical Chinatown.

Skylon Tower This observation tower on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls offers a bird's-eye views of one of the world's favorite natural wonders. The tower stands 520 feet from street level and 775 feet from the bottom of the falls.

One consistent factor of life in Hungary: car papers. These official documents must be with the car at all times when in operation. Not too hard there. These official documents must NOT be in the car when it is not in operation. Therein lies the challenge. Once you remove the papers, it is hard to always remember them.
I have never seen anyone's car papers in anything except these plastic wallets. I would expect people to want to customize the appearance of their own car papers, but apparently no one does. It's probably not allowed.
This will be another thing we will leave behind in Budapest.

Shrikes are the only songbirds to consistently prey on vertebrate animals. They feed on small mammals and birds for much of year and often store uneaten prey by impaling it on thorns. This habit has earned them the nickname "butcher birds."
This fellow had apparently eaten shortly before as there was still gore on his face.
Normally a solitary hunter, it perches atop trees and scans for prey. When prey is sighted, the bird drops from its perch and flies low over the ground, in slightly undulating flight to the attack. It knocks flying victims to the ground with a blow from its bill or seizes them with its feet. Once on the ground, it kills with a series of bites. Like the bills of falcons, shrikes' bills are hooked, with a toothlike structure on the upper mandible and a corresponding notch on the lower bill. Their eyesight is comparable to that of diurnal raptors. Unlike raptors, however, the shrike lacks the powerful talons that hawks use to dispatch their prey. Another hunting strategy is to move through the branches of trees trying to flush birds, which are then pursued. Birds as large as Blue Jays and Mourning Doves may be taken, as well as many smaller birds such as chickadees, Snow Buntings, crossbills, sparrows, and redpolls. Mammalian prey includes lemmings, voles, and mice. Insects such as grasshoppers, crickets, flies, beetles, wasps, and caterpillars are also eaten and may make up to one-quarter of the shrike's diet in season. Prey is often carried to a thorny tree or shrub to be impaled. If it's hungry, the shrike consumes its prey at once, but sometimes food is left impaled for short-term storage.
Northern Shrikes sing a medley of short liquid trills and whistles and harsh notes and often mimic the calls and songs of other birds such as Blue Jays, Gray Catbirds, American Robins, and Song Sparrows. The call is a harsh shek-shek or a grating jaaeg.
I consistently see or beat the sunrise now that I have a dog to walk in the morning. Never been a morning person before, it's kinda nice.

È una costruzione in acciaio, consistente di 9 sfere che rappresentano un cristallo di ferro ingrandito 165 miliardi di volte.
Venne costruito in occasione dell'Expo del 1958. Progettato dall'architetto André Waterkeyn, in origine doveva durare 6 mesi.
Il monumento ha un'altezza totale di 103 metri. Le sfere, che hanno un diametro di 18 metri, sono collegate da scale mobili e da scale dalle quali, tramite finestrature ed oblò, è possibile guardare le altre sfere o il panorama sottostante. Tre delle sfere superiori non hanno supporto verticale e quindi, per motivi di sicurezza, non sono aperte al pubblico. Dalle finestre della sfera superiore si può godere di una vista panoramica di Bruxelles, mentre le altre sfere ospitano diverse mostre (wikipedia it).

Great Egg-Fly Butterfly (Hypolimnas bolina)
Description: A large brown butterfly with a wingspan of 65-95 mm. The dry season forms are consistently lighter coloured and larger than individuals from the the wet season. In the males, the oval white patches on the upper sides are suffused with a beautiful iridescent royal blue. It is striking when viewed in bright light and with the proper wing orientation. The females lack the bold white markings above, but have a steely blue streak below the apex towards the front margin.
The underside of both sexes are similar, but are very variable in the width of the bands and markings. The ground colour is light brown and there is a diffuse purplish band at the center of the hind wing which runs from the lower margin to the front margin. The width of the creamy submarginal band is much reduced in females, especially in the dry season.
Status, distribution and habitat: This is a widely distributed butterfly and commonest with the onset of the monsoonal rains. It is found in open spaces with scrub jungle, along forest roads in the wet zone or along hedges and fences in cultivated areas or plantations.
Habits: It is a strong flier, but the females mimic the behavior of the the Common Indian Crow and hence fly slower and more leisurely. However, it is capable of very swift flight when alarmed. The males are territorial and love to sit at a premium location along a forest path, or the opening to a glade, and spend much of their time waiting for females to come by. They frequently inspect those passing by going after them, but soon come back to take charge of the area. In the wet zone, the males love to perch on the dead leaves of the bracken fern commonly found on either side of gravel roads through forests and plantations. At such locations, it often searches out a concealed area with some shade and sits with its head pointing down, almost vertically (image above). On other occasions, the females prefer to sit on the underside of leaves with their wings closed over their backs, and take off suddenly on close approach. They frequent flowers for nectar but do not mud-sip or feed on rotting plant food sources.
