Dreamscape Number One by Michael Arpino

My dreams are almost always lucid, recurring, and internally consistent, and this has fascinated me ever since I was very young. I've written about the subject matter of my dreams many times, but I have never tried to capture the visual essence of them using a three-dimensional medium before. That's where my dreamscape...s project comes in... I will be building a series of models or dioramas that portray my more memorable dreams as accurately as possible, in accordance with my memories of them. I will then photograph them to try and convey the fantastic scenery that I have seen in my sleep.

This dream, like many of my more memorable ones, began with me driving down a long, winding, desolate highway as the sun began to set. I passed a clearing in the dense forests that lined the side of the road and saw an eerie old clapboard building with a single circular window that stared back at me like the unblinking socket of a cyclopian skull. I remembered that earlier in my dream, an old man had told me that he used to go to school there, but the building had long since been abandoned. I've dreamed of this building several times.

Pulling a consistent "Guinness" pour with each espresso shot is a sign of great coffee. The last three are part of her book series, The Lieutenant James Mysteries. The work features the main character Lt. Hallmark Hall of Fame movies are consistently excellent. Chill Wills' (1902/3-1978) final film role was in Hallmark's "Stubby Pringle's Christmas" aired two days after his death.

The made for TV movie was partly shot in the ghost town of Silver Plume, Colorado.

Wills' first film was an uncredited bit as a campfire singer in W.C. Field's masterpiece "It's a Gift" (1934).

FBI Uniform Crime Reports consistently indicate the majority of officer involved shootings occur between 18:00 and 02:00, under reduced light or in conditions where no light is present. Human night vision is poor so we depend heavily on artificial light in conditions with little or no light. For various reasons, very few agencies issue pistol mounted lights to every officer. Firearms instructors receive little if any instruction in the tactical use of their flashlight and few departments have any kind of ongoing reduced light firearms or tactical light training.

Popow v. Margate mandated that police officers must be trained in the conditions they are likely to work including conditions of dim or no light. Every law officer is likely to encounter reduced light conditions during their shift whether it is a dark basement on the day watch or working during the hours of darkness. Tactical Flashlight Instructor was designed to meet the needs of the law enforcement trainer to create and integrate realistic training with sound tactics designed around modern tactical illumination tools for their training program.

This course will not teach you how to be an instructor. Prior basic firearms/DT instructor level training is required as a pre-requisite.

The antecedents of the Carreras business began trading in the eighteenth century (the company's products and advertising materials consistently bore the motto 'Established 1788'), and forebears of the founder’s family were Spanish apothecaries. The founder of the business was a Spanish nobleman, Don José Carreras Ferrer, who fought in the Peninsular War under the Duke of Wellington (1808–1814). After serving and receiving the highest military honours, it is believed he was obliged to leave Spain on account of his political views.

In 1881, the first cigarette-making machine was patented in the United States by James Bonsack, and by 1883 one of the British manufacturers, W. D. & H. O. Wills, had pioneered the use of the Bonsack machine in England. Wills joined with twelve other companies to form the Imperial Tobacco Group, from which both Rothmans and Carreras chose to remain independent, and by 1901 the Bonsack machine, making 200 cigarettes a minute, was exclusively available only to members of this Group. Around this time another of the cigarette machine makers, Bernhard Baron, had returned to London from the United States in 1896 with a patent for a new machine which could make 450 cigarettes a minute. Baron's progress was watched with interest by Mr. Yapp who was by then running the Carreras business but who was keen to make cigarettes a paying venture.

Having been unable to sell his machines to the newly formed Imperial Tobacco Company, which had a monopoly on the Bonsack machines, Yapp was able to negotiate a business arrangement with Baron in 1903. On 6 June 1903, Carreras became a public company with Yapp and Baron as directors and, under the leadership of Bernhard Baron, heralded the beginnings of competition for the Imperial Tobacco Group and the new American maker, James Buchanan Duke, who was also capturing large slices of the British market with Ogden’s Guinea Gold, the first Virginia cigarette made in England. The original Carreras prospectus was heavily criticised in the City press, but within a short time, the shares were fully subscribed, particularly by members of the tobacco trade, who saw potential in the new venture. The Baron family had a reputation as good employers who treated their staff well.[citation needed] Bernhard Baron would walk amongst his employees daily, enquiring after their families, and his son, Louis, and his grandson, Maurice, also made regular visits to the factory floor. A tradition developed that on Bernhard's birthday, each December, all employees were given two weeks' wages and a cake to take home.

In 1904, an allied company was established. Called Carreras and Marcianus Ltd and operating from St James's Place, Aldgate EC3, the former Baron Machine Company works, the company’s purpose was to commence production of machine-made cigarettes. During the last six months of 1904 three brands made their debut, including Black Cat, the first cigarette in the United Kingdom to contain coupons that were redeemable for gifts.

In 1905 yet more brands were introduced such as Chick, Jetty, and Sweet Kiss and Carreras began coupon trading in Black Cat. The business prospered and in 1906 additional premises were opened nearby, introducing new brands such as Carreras Ovals and Seven Up. Baron chose many novel schemes for the promotion of Carreras’ pipe tobacco and cigarette brands. In 1909, the company introduced the Baron automatic pipe filler in cartridges, which revolutionised pipe smoking and sold by the millions.

In 1921, after the launch of Craven A, Carreras launched more brands such as Wall Arms, Piccadilly, and Turf. By 1927 the business had outgrown the Arcadia premises in City Road; the war had increased demand for cigarettes. In 1928, the famous Arcadia Works was opened in Mornington Crescent NW1, formerly a favourite residence of artists and writers. This building, which has become a major London landmark, was unusual in its design. It was the first factory in Britain to make use of pre-stressed concrete technology, and the first to contain air conditioning and a dust extraction plant. The company was also the first to provide full welfare services for its employees.[citation needed] The Arcadia Works was often visited by royalty, including the Duke of Windsor when he was the Prince of Wales, King George VI when he was the Duke of York, and the Duke of Kent. Many other important visitors from every part of the globe were entertained at Mornington Crescent. Leading to the entrance of the building were two large bronze cats.[3] Cast at the Haskins Foundry in London, these versions of the Egyptian god Bastet were each eight feet six inches tall and stood guard over Arcadia Works until 1959 when Carreras merged with Rothmans of Pall Mall and moved to a new factory in Basildon, Essex. The cats were separated, with one making the short journey to Essex, while the other went to be displayed outside the Carreras factory at Spanishtown, Jamaica.

La Jagua del Pilar Seguimiento Obra Barrio Paraíso by Prosperidad Social

Satisfactoriamente avanzan las obras de infraestructura adelantadas por Prosperidad Social en los municipios de Villanueva y La Jagua del Pilar al Sur de La Guajira, consistentes en la construcción y renovación de tres parques y la pavimentación de más de mil metros viales en el barrio El Paraíso, respectivamente.

Así lo evidenció el director general de Prosperidad Social, Nemesio Roys Garzón, quien hizo un recorrido por las obras junto a la comunidad y autoridades locales de los dos municipios en donde se ejecutan estas obras con una inversión superior a los $8.300 millones.

"Estos proyectos de infraestructura llevan calidad de vida a la población de estos dos municipios del Sur de La Guajira, los terminaremos este año satisfactoriamente y están incluidos en las 65 obras que de manera histórica estamos ejecutando en el departamento con una inversión superior a los $128.000 millones durante el gobierno del presidente Santos", afirmó el director general de Prosperidad Social, Nemesio Roys Garzón.

El proyecto de construcción y remodelación de los parques 6 de Abril, La Fe y Román Ovalle en Villanueva registra un avance de cerca del 45%, beneficiará a más de 19 mil habitantes con una inversión superior a los $6.400 millones. Los espacios deportivos cuentan con cancha polideportiva, sintética y sistema de gimnasio biosaludable, brindando a la población

escenarios de encuentro, ampliando el potencial cultural y deportivo del municipio.

Por su parte, el proyecto de construcción de más de 1.000 metros de pavimento vial en el barrio El Paraíso en La Jagua del Pilar, registra un avance del 92% e incluye además la construcción de más de 1.000 metros de andenes, zonas verdes y señalización con una inversión de $1.905 millones.

La obra mejorará la calidad de vida de la comunidad que ya no padecerá afectaciones por el polvo o el encharcamiento en época de invierno. Se mejorará la conectividad del barrio con otros sectores, optimizando y reduciendo tiempos de desplazamiento. La obra, generó 35 empleos y beneficiará a unas 170 familias del barrio El Paraíso.

En La Jagua del Pilar también iniciará próximamente el mejoramiento de condiciones de vivienda de 100 hogares.

The West had consistently described China's zero Covid policy as "draconian". However, with China now slowly loosening up its Covid lockdowns, they have now changed their tune to millions of Chinese citizens will likely die because most of them don't have natural immunity. Well, Dr. Fauci had a heated argument with Senator Rand Paul on natural immunity when Paul said he had natural immunity due to his previous Covid infection. Fauci is just another politician saying one thing one day and another thing on another day.

I don't know whether the nRNA vaccines are really more superior to the Chinese indigenous vaccines. All I know is we have some 1.1 million Covid deaths in the US and many studies have suggested the latest Covid variants are highly vaccines evasive, meaning low vaccine efficacy. So it sounds like Fauci's pushing China to allow mRNA vaccines may have more to do with drumming up business for Pfizer and Moderna.

Most have acknowledged that the latest variants are less severe with many asymptomatic infections. In fact, a Southern China province recently had 160,000 cases with zero death.

The difference between China and the West is that China puts the health of its people first while the West puts its economy over the health of its people.

The prevailing Omicron variants, compared with the original and earlier strains, are more transmissible, but much less virulent.

With the original and the Delta strains, about half or 60 percent of the patients would show lung damage to varying degrees, but with the current strain, 90 percent of the patients are asymptomatic or very light cases, with extremely rare incidence of pulmonary infections, to say nothing of severe pulmonary inflammation.

Of the more than 160,000 COVID-19 cases treated in Guangzhou so far, there has not been a single death. There have been only four severe cases, all attributable to underlying medical conditions, which might have nothing to do with COVID-19. Thus my assessment is that the current variant has become significantly vitiated in its virulence, and is very similar to influenza. Fauci isn’t just worried about a ‘wave of infections’ as China reopens. He sees a risk in a whole new wave of mutant variants

“Whenever you have a large wave of transmissions of a virus, you give it ample opportunity to mutate,” he said.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, President Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser, warned about the risks of China’s planned retreat from its zero COVID policy—and reiterated that the pandemic isn’t over.

On Wednesday, China eased some of its quarantine requirements in a move away from its zero COVID policy that has, at times, included lockdowns of major cities. The move comes after anti-government protests that erupted throughout China over the strict anti-COVID measures.

But to “reopen” without the widespread adoption of vaccines— particularly western vaccines that are considered more effective than Beijing’s—would be a huge risk, Fauci said.

“If they don’t do things like mount and implement a proactive vaccination campaign, and you open up, you are going to have a wave of infections which are certainly going to be associated with a certain degree of severity of disease,” Fauci told the Financial Times’ Global Boardroom conference on Wednesday.

Experts previously told Fortune that because of China’s zero COVID approach, its population has limited immunity from infection due to an overall lack of exposure. That coupled with low vaccination rates among its older residents and less effective vaccines—as Fauci said—could trigger a huge wave of infections.

If that happens, there’s an increased chance of mutations, Fauci said, that could create new variants. New variants can sometimes spread more quickly than the original virus, as seen with Omicron.

“Whenever you have a large wave of transmissions of a virus, you give it ample opportunity to mutate,” he said. “And when you give a virus opportunity to mutate, that allows it to form potentially new variants. And once you get a brand new variant that could have an impact on the rest of the world.”

Still Fauci said that China’s strategy was “flawed” from the beginning because the country didn’t use its lockdowns to vaccinate its population. In an interview with the Washington Post last week, Fauci said policies like China’s zero COVID should come with an “end game” and a purpose.

“In the era of vaccination, you might want to restrict until you can get your population in totality vaccinated, particularly the highly vulnerable elderly individuals, but as it turned out, that’s not what happened,” he said. “The vaccination of the elderly has not been well performed, and the vaccine they have has been not a particularly effective vaccine.”

Fauci advised that China’s citizens be given more effective vaccines.

“I would suggest that they import western ones, particularly the highly effective mRNA vaccines that are used in most countries in the world,” he said. “Unfortunately, the original Chinese vaccines did not have the level of efficacy of some of the other vaccines.”

World’s Best Surfers Ignite Aproador to Complete Round 1 of Billabong Rio Pro

APROADOR, Rio de Janeiro/Brazil (Tuesday, May 17, 2011) – After a week of lay-days, the world’s best surfers tore into consistently changing conditions at the lefthand pointbreak of Aproador to complete Round 1 of the Billabong Rio Pro.

Stop No. 3 of 11 on the ASP World Title Series, the opening day of men’s competition saw ASP Dream Tour veterans earn the day’s top scores while defending event winner Jadson Andre (BRA), 21, made an impressive entrance in the Billabong Rio Pro’s opening round.

Kelly Slater (USA), 39, reigning 10-time ASP World Champion, got off to a strong start to open his Billabong Rio Pro campaign. Slater unleashed two furious tail-drifting backhand turns to notch the day’s highest single-wave score of a 9.00 (out of 10) midway through his bout to overtake ASP World Tour rookie Julian Wilson (AUS), 22, and event wildcard Peterson Crisanto (BRA), 18, after nearly missing the start of his heat.

“That 9 felt good,” Slater said. “I went down to grab my jersey and there was some confusion. By the time I got out, the heat had already started and Julian got that first one. It wasn’t a good start. I knew there were going to be some good ones and I just had to be patient. That one good wave actually let me bottom turn and hit the lip, most of the waves were soft and had a lot of horizontals.”

Slater, who finished runner-up at the Billabong Pro last year, was also quick to admit that several goofy-footers will be tough to beat at the lefthander of Aproador and noted that the natural-footers will need to be especially selective in their wave choice at the Billabong Rio Pro.

“A little left like this is going to play well for goofy footers,” Slater said. “Owen (Wright) and Jadson (Andre) are probably frothing on it and licking their chops ready to go. We (natural footers) have been on our frontside at Snapper and Bells and now it’s their turn. We’ve just got to try and be smart. Mick (Fanning) looked good and there are waves out there to do it, you’ve just got to be smart.”

Taj Burrow (AUS), 32, opened his Billabong Rio Pro campaign with a sharp backhand attack by belting two Arpoador lefthanders to the tune of a 16.83 (out of 20) on his first two waves to earn the highest heat-total of the day. “It was kind of scary for a second there, right when they decided to start the competition the wind started howling, but then it cleaned up heaps,” Burrow said. “I got two fun ones at the start so I’m happy.”

Jadson Andre, defending event winner, reveled in Aproador’s lefthanders with a combination of aggressive carves and snaps to take a convincing Round 1 heat victory with the support of the Brazilian crowd behind him.

“I’m so happy to be here competing in Brazil and I love Aproador, I feel like a local,” Andre said. “I’ve competed here several times before and have friends here. I know everyone says I should feel pressure as defending champion, but I’m not worried about it. I’m just thinking about the next heat. That’s what I did last year.”

Mick Fanning (AUS), 29, two-time ASP World Champion, slowly built momentum in his opening Billabong Rio Pro heat, eventually igniting two lefthanders by combining a series of seamless backhand turns to notch a 15.07 heat total to advance directly through to Round 3.

“It was tricky trying to find the right one out there, but I watched the heat before and noticed that guys that were doing turns back-to-back were getting scores, so I tried to concentrate on that,” Fanning said. “They weren’t the biggest waves, but they just allowed three turns straight away.”

The Australian talent also expressed the importance of advancing directly through to Round 3 with Brazil’s ever-changing conditions.

“It’s really good to skip as many rounds as possible, especially here in Brazil where it can be really unpredictable,” Fanning said. “I’m stoked to get through Round 1 and I’ll go back and assess what’s going on and hopefully keep going.”

Billabong Rio Pro event organizers will reconvene at Aproador at 7am local time tomorrow morning for a possible Round 2 start.
