The Irati forest or jungle (Iratiko oihana in Basque) is a forest distributed between the north of Navarra (Spain) and the Atlantic Pyrenees (Sola and Lower Navarra) in southwestern France.

For its Spanish part, it is located in the valley of the Irati river, between the Orzanzurieta and Roncesvalles mountains to the west, and the Orhi mountain to the east. The southern limit is set by the imposing mass of the Sierra de Abodi. The main accesses are to the west through Orbaiceta (Valle de Aézcoa) and to the east through Ochagavía (Valle de Salazar).

It is the largest forest mass in Navarra and one of the largest and best preserved beech (Fagus sylvatica) and fir (Abies alba) forests in all of Europe. Despite being a forest exploited by forestry since the 16th-17th centuries, the respect and good work of the inhabitants of these valleys has made it fully preserved. There are several protected areas within the area: the entire Irati is a ZEPA (Special Bird Protection Area), as well as protected areas such as Natural Reserve or Integral Reserve of the total 17,000 ha of forest.

Its architecture resembles many of the 13th century towers preserved in the Lot.

The tower belonged to the Viscount of Turenne and in 1748 became the property of the Duke of Noailles at the same time as the castellany of Martel (H. Ramet, 1920). The first mention in the texts appears in 1352, where it served as a watchtower and prison. The land registry of 1757 still indicates it as a prison (J. Pardinel, 1978).

It owes its name to a bourgeois family of Martel, the Tournemire, known at the beginning of the 14th century.

Aligned with the enclosure, the tower is square in plan, about 7.70 m on a side for a height of 25 m with four levels to which is added the crenellated roof level. A gatehouse established on the third floor made it possible to beat the foot of the tower on the side of the ditch.

About as shot.

🇬🇧 Connected to Notre-Dame Abbey Church by the Charles VII passageway, Saint-Pierre Church preserves interesting remains from the Carolingian period: the façade and the first two bays of the nave, punctuated by circular niches and mullioned windows. The rest of the building was completely rebuilt in the 13th century on the south side and in the 14th century on the north side. On the south wall, you can admire a rare example of Carolingian painting: a bust of a man.

Journey comleted

Definitely not as frosty as yesterday's Finch, but I think the pose tells the story here with it's puffed up look, and how it's head appears to be sunken into the feathers of it's chest. I am sure it is doing what it can to conserve it's body heat.

The warm weather has arrived here. Last night the temperature soared about 12 degrees in an hour or two. It was like a switch was turned on. Along with that warming we got just a bit of freezing rain which I am not thrilled about, but it is nice to see the temperature moderate as it as.

I think the next time I see this dove it will have a completely different pose for me.

The Chapel of the Madonna di Vitaleta (Chapel Of Lady Vitaleta) is located in the hills of the Val d’Orcia on the road between San Quirico d’Orcia and Pienza. It is one of the most beautiful and photographed locations in this incredible Tuscany landscape, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The small chapel, framed by two rows of cypress trees was built in the spot where legend says the Virgin Mary appeared to a shepherdess. In 1533, a statue of the Virgin Mary by Andrea della Robbia was installed in the church, today conserved in the Church of Madonna di Vitaleta in San Quirico.

The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia is an early Christian-style monument built in the first half of the 5th century in Ravenna, Italy. This monument is world-renowned for its sumptuous mosaics, which are among the oldest preserved in the city and mark the beginning of the transition from early Christian to Byzantine art.

The mausoleum is one of eight Ravenna sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996

Capo Figari

Conserve the beauty of our planet!

A lucky day where we sighted two Greater Spotted Eagles hunting Spot Billed Ducks in a small marshland right next to a river. There were a large number of ducks, ruffs, Stilts and other waders in some marshes next to a river - the Eagles waited for a long time before one dived and made an attempt. He chased away the birds to another wet patch nearby and maybe that was the goal - to tire out those ducks. Then he came back and landed on a tall tree 30 feet away.

These are formidable top-line apex predators of the sky in the country. This is a large bird of prey with a range much of Europe and Asia. Almost 70 cm in height and around 2-2.5 kgs in weight, this is a big predator. Like every other large predators / eagles, this too is a sluggish hunter that tries to conserve its energy while hunting. The two were perched on a tree for a long while before we saw some action. And they continued to sit still after this brief action. As the day became too hot and light was harsh, we moved on.

Thanks in advance for your views and feedback. Much appreciated.

A friend in RL has started sending recipes to friends, showing us different ways to cook good, healthy food with minimum ingredients and using as little resource as possible. Given the world's current situation, it's probably one of the best ways we can help others. Show them how to conserve food, because shortage is inevitable, especially with people constantly hoarding.

Galapagos Islands

Iguanas are large lizards within the family Iguanidae

Charles Darwin described the Galápagos land iguana as "ugly animals”, of a yellowish orange beneath, and of a brownish-red colour above: from their low facial angle they have a singularly stupid appearance. The Galápagos land iguana is one of the largest lizards in the world, growing to a length of 0.9 to 1.5 m (3–5 ft) with a body weight of up to 13 kg (29 lb), depending upon which island they are from. Being cold-blooded, they absorb heat from the sun by basking on volcanic rock, and at night sleep in burrows to conserve their body heat. These iguanas also enjoy a symbiotic relationship with birds; the birds remove parasites and ticks, providing relief to the iguanas and food for the birds.

This is the best-preserved monument in the archaeological site of Delphi. It is located on the sacred road leading to the sanctuary of Apollo. According to Pausanias, the Athenians built the Treasury perhaps after 490 BC to thank the god Apollo for their victory at the Battle of Marathon. It is the oldest example of a Doric marble treasury from Paros.

🇬🇧 Alghero is one of the few Italian fortified towns to have preserved around 70% of its walls (the section from the Fort of La Maddalena to the Esperò Rejal tower is missing), with adjoining towers: recently enhanced by restoration work, the bastions offer a promenade over the sea that surrounds the old town.

The bastions defending the old town from the sea date back to the Catalan-Aragonese period and, from Piazza Sulis onwards, are dedicated to the memory of famous navigators:

At the northern end of the Bastioni Marco Polo, the mid-eighteenth-century Polveriera Tower was used as an arsenal and gunpowder depot.

Columns evoking trees and branches, Antoni Gaudi's La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona exhilirates with the stunning tonality of its illumination. I took this photo on March 10, 2017: 135 years after construction began, 2.25 years before a building permit was issued, and 9.25 years before completion is expected (the 100th anniversary of Gaudi's death). Multiple generations and pragmatic modifications were anticipated by Gaudi, who wrote, "I will grow old but others will come after me. What must always be conserved is the spirit of the work, but its life has to depend on the generations it is handed down to and with whom it lives and is incarnated."

Posso farci poco

Ma quando ti aspetto

Mi sento come dentro a un gioco

2018 NJ BALD EAGLE PROJECT REPORT

by: Larissa Smith, CWF Wildlife Biologist

The Conserve Wildlife Foundation of NJ in partnership with the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife, Endangered and Nongame Species Program, has released the 2018 NJ Bald Eagle Project Report.

“Two hundred-four nest sites were monitored during the nesting season, of which 185 were documented to be active (with eggs) and 19 were territorial or housekeeping pairs. Thirty new eagle pairs were found this season, 20 in the south, nine in central and one in the north. One hundred-twenty-one nests (66%) of the 182 known-outcome nests produced 172 young, for a productivity rate of 0.94 young per active/known-outcome nest. The failure rate was well above average with 61 nests (33%) failing to produce. The Delaware Bay region remained the state’s eagle stronghold, with roughly half of nests located in Cumberland and Salem counties and the bayside of Cape May County.”

The number of active nests has increased while the number of young eagles fledged has decreased since a high of 216 young fledged in 2016. During the 2018 eagle nesting season there was an abundance of cold, wet, windy and snowy weather which was the cause for a portion of the nest failures. As the eagle population increases, there are more eagles competing for territories. This can also be a contributing factor in nest failures. NJ is still in the range of 0.9 to 1.1 young per nest which is needed for population maintenance with a productivity rate of 0.94 young per known-outcome/active nest in 2018. The 2018 NJ Eagle Project Report has all the details on the project including telemetry, re-sightings and recoveries.

The success of the eagle project is due to the tremendous dedication of the NJ Eagle Project Volunteers. They monitor the nests in all types of conditions and education people about the eagles with enthusiasm.

Designed by the Beguin-Massart architectural firm, the building, covered with an opaline mesh with gently rounded contours, sits like a lantern in the heart of the city. It is the result of a reflection in which the architects have been able to meet the poetics of the place, its history, its beauty, and all the functional requirements of a museum today. With more than 600 m2 of exhibition space, a bookstore space, a documentation center, a meeting space and educational activities and all the technical rooms necessary for the conservation of works, the Trinkhall is part of a new dynamic . Its café-restaurant, widely opening its terrace onto Avroy Park, remains freely accessible to the public and reinforces the dimension of exchange and sociability that has characterized the place since the 19th century.

NEW JERSEY 2017 BALD EAGLE PROJECT REPORT

ANOTHER PRODUCTIVE YEAR FOR NJ’S EAGLES

by Larissa Smith, CWF Wildlife Biologist

The Conserve Wildlife Foundation of NJ in partnership with the NJ Endangered and Nongame Species Program has released the 2017 NJ Bald Eagle Project Report. In 2017, 178 eagle nests were monitored during the nesting season. Of these nests 153 were active (with eggs) and 25 were territorial or housekeeping pairs. One hundred and ninety young were fledged.

In 2017 the number of active nests was three more than in 2016, but the number young fledged decreased by 27 from a record high of 216 fledged in 2016. The productivity rate this season of 1.25 young/active nest is still above the required range of 0.0 to 1.1 for population maintenance. Productivity could be lower this season for many reasons including weather, predation and disturbance to the nesting area. In 2017 nest monitors reported several instances of “intruder” eagles at nests which did disrupt the nesting attempts of several pairs. One of these “eagle dramas” unfolded at the Duke Farms eagle cam watched by millions of people. An intruder female attempted to replace the current female. This harassment interrupted the pairs bonding and copulation and no eggs were laid.

This year’s report includes a section on Resightings of banded eagles. Resightings of NJ (green) banded eagles have increased over the years, as well as eagles seen in NJ that were banded in other states. These resightings are important, as they help us to understand eagle movements during the years between fledging and settling into a territory, as well as adult birds at a nest site.
