“Sketches of possible Apollo configurations for the earth-orbital, circumlunar and lunar landing missions. In all cases, the spacecraft will be rather compact, in order to minimize its weight, and to facilitate the reentry into the earth’s atmosphere.”
Brief, but concise. I like it.
The ‘sealed’ tunnel (occupied by one of the crewmen), appears to be an airlock. Possibly as a result of being the Direct Ascent mode? So, extrapolating, egress was via the capsule’s apex? But, If the plan was for a two-crew member EVA (for safety), was egress one out at a time, keeping the main cabin pressurized at all times? And descent to surface? Via what...the good old original rope ladder? If so, was that the conveyance regardless of landing method/orientation, i.e., tail-first or belly/skid pads?
Surely there must be some sort of definitive documentation out there that contains the answers to these burning questions. Like, gee, I dunno, possibly even a NASA site? Nah...what am I thinking. 😕
There IS the NTRS website, but wait, IF there, it’s likely in the ‘Members Only” section. And I don’t have the creds nor permission to access it, nor have I submitted a “Mother may I” for such. 😠 Drats.
Well then, I suppose it’s time to check out that Indonesian document hosting site again.
Not that it matters; however, I applied/submitted for access to the hallowed inner sanctum repository of NTRS treasures. I met none of the prerequisite requirements, so I’m sure it was an exercise in futility. I’m hoping to post their “form letter” rejection. That is, if their auto-generated response system (if such exists) is capable of extending such basic courtesy.

45231 (5231) was one of 842 Stanier Class 5 4-6-0, commonly known as the Black Five as mixed traffic, jack of all trades, locomotives which where the workhorses of the post nationalisation steam engines
The Sherwood Forrester is a preserved Stanier Class 5 4-6-0 locomotive built by Armstrong Whitworth for the LMS (London Midland Scottish Railways) in August 1936, originally carrying the number 5231. It spent most of its early career at Patricroft shed, working mainly to North Wales and Leeds. In 1954 it was transferred to Aston (Birmigham) were it remained for nine years after which it spent time at Rugby, Chester, Speke and Carnforth, still in use on the last day of steam, it was sold directly into preservation.
After being initially preserved at Carnforth, 5231 became associated with the preserved Great Central Railway (GCR) in Leicestershire. In 1973, it hauled the official opening train between Loughborough and Quorn. Never having carried a name in BR service, the locomotive was nonetheless named 3rd (Volunteer) Battalion The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment in 1976 before withdrawal in 1977 for overhaul. Returning to the GCR after a spell with the Nene Valley Railways it returned to the GCR for the filming of the feature film Shadowlands, about the life of C S Lewis. in 1997 it was painter BR Black and aquired its present name The Sherwood Forester

Homing in on the final design, this drawing shows a fixed sphere inside a tapering lower cowling or shroud with a flat landing 'foot', the viewport angled at 20 degrees down, a science drawer and robotic manipulator arm on an extending rail under the sphere. 'Egress trunk' refers to the combined view port/access hatch design, rather than the earlier idea of keeping the sphere as two halves bolted together and opening a bit like a clam shell.

Model of a mining excavator in front shovel configuration in scale 1:28.5. This 300 tonne machine is a representative of Liebherr's most popular size class and is ideally suited to load a fleet of 100 tonne payload mining trucks.
When LEGO introduced its 42100 Liebherr R 9800, I knew I had to get that set immediately after release. But I also knew from the beginning, that I would not like the official model's Technic design and that I had to build my own version.
Here it is, scaled larger than 42100, but on the other hand representing a much smaller machine than the 9800. About 300 vs. 800 tonnes in real life. This allowed me to use the main components of the official LEGO model to build my R 994 B. I used the clamshell bucket, the Power Functions XL actuators and the tracks and sprockets.
The main difference from 42100 lies in the electric components of my model. The following functions are all powered by two Power Functions rechargeable battery boxes and controlled by three SBricks via bluetooth connection and Brick Controller 2 app:
- Left and right crawler treads each using a Power Functions L motor
- Slewing of the upper structure using two Power Functions M motors
- Boom cylinders: one Power Functions XL motor
- Stick cylinders: one Power Functions L motor
- Bucket cylinders: one Power Functions M motor
- Clamshell bucket: one Brick Engine V1 motor (compatible to Power Functions)
- Access ladder: one Power Functions M motor
- Service flap: one Power Functions M motor
- Lighting: three pairs of Power Functions LEDs
Besides the main drive and digging functions, the model features a retractable access ladder and a lowerable service flap on the underside of the upper structure frame. The service flap is used to refuel and grease the excavator.
While building the Liebherr R 994 B Litronic in 1:28.5 scale, I could refer to a highly detailed diecast model of the very same machine in 1:50 scale.

No idea. Some sort of dual-component lunar orbiter/comms relay configuration? Despite the red shift of the ink, I’m pretty sure that it’s at least the moon. The nearer “lower orbit” vehicle looks quite instrumented, not a lander though. Sort of like a Voyager precursor. The inclusion of the arrow depicting the direction of flight, while considerate, is totally pointless. 😉
Based on the photo ID number, this must be a JPL concept. Also supporting such is that it looks to be another wonderful Ken Hodges work. The photograph is from the collection of Eric Burgess.
...Thanks to Flickr user "plutogno"...with insider knowledge 👍 - please read "Comments" below - the concept depicts the following:
"Lunar data from previous automated and manned exploratory missions have now been analyzed to the point where it is possible to define objectives for new missions to the Moon. The most logical next step is a polar orbiter designed to measure the Moon's gravity field, figure, heat flow, magnetism and surface composition. NASA has commissioned a study of this mission at JPL with participation by lunar scientists from JSC, and also has tentatively selected a group of investigators who constitute a Science Working Team. This paper describes the mission objectives and reports progress in the mission-definition study. As presently visualized, the orbiter will be launched by a Delta vehicle in 1980. After insertion into an eccentric, polar lunar orbit it will deploy a small, spinning subsatellite whose purpose is to relay precise radio Doppler measurements from the orbiter on the Moon's far side.
After subsatellite delivery, the orbiter will maneuver into a low, circular polar orbit whence the instrument fields of view will be continuously pointed to the nadir for a nominal mission time of one year. Tracking and data acquisition will be via 26-m ground antennas and the JPL Mission Control and Computing Center, with distributed computing elements used in both flight and ground systems to simplify the data interfaces. Significant design advances are intended to include: (1) all systems designed to cost, (2) advanced scientific sensors aboard the spacecraft, (3) ground operations systems designed for largely automated, routine operation, and (4) design and operations concepts applicable to a variety of low-cost orbital missions in the Solar System."
The above is per the abstract of an article entitled "Lunar polar orbiter: A global survey of the Moon", by James D. Burke, at:
www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/00945765779...
Credit: Science Direct website
Additionally, from the abstract to another article, "Lunar Polar Orbiter considered for 1980", by Gloria B. Lubkin:
"Another lunar mission is being studied at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the first US lunar mission since Apollo 17 in 1972. This one, to be launched in 1980, would be unmanned. It would consist of an instrumented polar‐orbiting spacecraft (at an altitude of 100 kilometers) and a smaller companion subsatellite (at an altitude of 5000 km), which would serve to track the orbiter for gravity sensing when it is hidden from the Earth by the Moon. The ensemble would be launched by a single Delta launch vehicle. The spacecraft would orbit the moon for one year, examining the Moon's surface with a variety of instruments. These would measure lunar gravity, shape, magnetism and heat flow, and allow the determination of the chemical and mineral composition of the Moon's surface."

“This is an artist concept of the enhanced configuration of the permanently manned Space Station, produced by Martin Marietta. The enhanced configuration includes an upper and lower keel for attaching external payloads, a 50 kilowatt solar dynamic system mounted on the ends of the transverse boom, a servicing bay and a co-orbiting platform (not pictured).”
One of several “dual-keel” proposals during this time period. Note the module(?) which sorta looks like a large telescope, recently delivered by the docked orbiter and being positioned by the station’s manipulators. In fact, the possible “receiving” RMS is attached to some sort of cradle (akin to those in the cargo bays of orbiters). For final placement/further translation along the truss? There appear to be cameras and some sort of optical/sighting (tele?) scope on one end. No idea what the appendages on the other end are. Even an MMU-clad Astronaut conducting an EVA, possibly inspecting the far-left solar array.
Interesting pseudo-negative/silhouette-like depiction…creative…by Les Pettus.

This artist concept shows the 70-ton configuration of NASA's Space Launch System (SLS) during launch.
(Note: artist concept updated July 30, 2013)
America’s new heavy-lift rocket, the Space Launch System, will be the largest launch vehicle ever built and more powerful than the Saturn V rocket that carried Apollo astronauts to the moon. The 70-metric-ton configuration (77 tons) will lift more than 154,000 pounds and will provide 10 percent more thrust than the Saturn V rocket.
The first SLS mission — Exploration Mission 1 — in 2017 will launch an uncrewed Orion spacecraft to demonstrate the integrated system performance of the SLS rocket and spacecraft prior to a crewed flight.

The sculpted part is of Hagueneau Nicolas (1490)
The painted part is of Matthias Grünewald 1515.
The work was confiscated by the Revolution and began at this time, his profane career in the museums of France and Germany.
The Crucifixion depicts Christ, Mary and John, Mary Magdalene and John the Baptist. The altarpiece was installed in the patient's room, of the monastery of the Antonines of Issenheim. The Antonine monks dedicated themselves to relieve patients of all kinds, including the plague, but especially the patients of "burning sickness" ("evil of the ardent) or "fire of St. Anthony." currently named ergotism, caused by ergot of rye. The view of the the sufferings of Christ was a form of psycho-somatic assistance to the patients. The table with the subject of the Saint Anthony temptations represent also a patient with this disease.
SAINT ANTOINE, TOUS LES SAINTS ET... L'HOMEOPATHIE
SAINT ANTOINE, ALL SAINTS ... AND HOMEOPATHY
The monks Antonine of Issenheim had the task of heal the sick. The altarpiece was installed in the large common room of the sick. It represented, in addition to the suffering Christ, Saint Anthony supposed to cure the "evil of the Ardents" Saint Jean Baptiste supposed to treat epilepsy, St. Sebastian invoked against the plague.
Ridiculous and obscurantist beliefs, according to some hyper- rationalists. But this is the same kind of beliefs that underlie and explain homeopathy.
From time immemorial men have observed surprising healing, unexpected. This so-called "miracles".
Modern Western doctors have had the same experience. Especially during the tests of allopathic medicines. They came to the following experimental observation: about 30% of patients were cured inexplicably, when we had administered their "placebo" instead of the test drug.
Very intelligently, the doctors decided not to ignore this phenomenon, statistically significant. They have dressed the placebo effect by using homeopathy, and its principle of extreme dilution. Scientifically homeopathy is a ridiculous farce, but it works sometimes.
Not by itself, but by our spirit. Exactly as the Issenheim Altarpiece.
At the time of Matthias Grünwald, Europe was a believer in God, Christ, the Virgin and the saints. The Isenheim Altarpiece was the homeopathy that time.
Our time is believing in Science, Technology, Drugs. Homeopathy uses the beliefs of our time to treat the men.
Ready to Byahe na! :)

I forgot to mention that for the 2nd half of the year for Biscuits' weekly photo I'll be using 1 lens a month.
July was the 100mm f/2.8 macro.
This is the last week, and I prioritized getting a close-up especially of his "flowery" configuration of spots around his left eye, he added the extra "look" to complete the image :-)
