Model of a mining excavator in front shovel configuration in scale 1:28.5. This 300 tonne machine is a representative of Liebherr's most popular size class and is ideally suited to load a fleet of 100 tonne payload mining trucks.

When LEGO introduced its 42100 Liebherr R 9800, I knew I had to get that set immediately after release. But I also knew from the beginning, that I would not like the official model's Technic design and that I had to build my own version.

Here it is, scaled larger than 42100, but on the other hand representing a much smaller machine than the 9800. About 300 vs. 800 tonnes in real life. This allowed me to use the main components of the official LEGO model to build my R 994 B. I used the clamshell bucket, the Power Functions XL actuators and the tracks and sprockets.

The main difference from 42100 lies in the electric components of my model. The following functions are all powered by two Power Functions rechargeable battery boxes and controlled by three SBricks via bluetooth connection and Brick Controller 2 app:

- Left and right crawler treads each using a Power Functions L motor

- Slewing of the upper structure using two Power Functions M motors

- Boom cylinders: one Power Functions XL motor

- Stick cylinders: one Power Functions L motor

- Bucket cylinders: one Power Functions M motor

- Clamshell bucket: one Brick Engine V1 motor (compatible to Power Functions)

- Access ladder: one Power Functions M motor

- Service flap: one Power Functions M motor

- Lighting: three pairs of Power Functions LEDs

Besides the main drive and digging functions, the model features a retractable access ladder and a lowerable service flap on the underside of the upper structure frame. The service flap is used to refuel and grease the excavator.

While building the Liebherr R 994 B Litronic in 1:28.5 scale, I could refer to a highly detailed diecast model of the very same machine in 1:50 scale.

No idea. Some sort of dual-component lunar orbiter/comms relay configuration? Despite the red shift of the ink, I’m pretty sure that it’s at least the moon. The nearer “lower orbit” vehicle looks quite instrumented, not a lander though. Sort of like a Voyager precursor. The inclusion of the arrow depicting the direction of flight, while considerate, is totally pointless. 😉

Based on the photo ID number, this must be a JPL concept. Also supporting such is that it looks to be another wonderful Ken Hodges work. The photograph is from the collection of Eric Burgess.

...Thanks to Flickr user "plutogno"...with insider knowledge 👍 - please read "Comments" below - the concept depicts the following:

"Lunar data from previous automated and manned exploratory missions have now been analyzed to the point where it is possible to define objectives for new missions to the Moon. The most logical next step is a polar orbiter designed to measure the Moon's gravity field, figure, heat flow, magnetism and surface composition. NASA has commissioned a study of this mission at JPL with participation by lunar scientists from JSC, and also has tentatively selected a group of investigators who constitute a Science Working Team. This paper describes the mission objectives and reports progress in the mission-definition study. As presently visualized, the orbiter will be launched by a Delta vehicle in 1980. After insertion into an eccentric, polar lunar orbit it will deploy a small, spinning subsatellite whose purpose is to relay precise radio Doppler measurements from the orbiter on the Moon's far side.

After subsatellite delivery, the orbiter will maneuver into a low, circular polar orbit whence the instrument fields of view will be continuously pointed to the nadir for a nominal mission time of one year. Tracking and data acquisition will be via 26-m ground antennas and the JPL Mission Control and Computing Center, with distributed computing elements used in both flight and ground systems to simplify the data interfaces. Significant design advances are intended to include: (1) all systems designed to cost, (2) advanced scientific sensors aboard the spacecraft, (3) ground operations systems designed for largely automated, routine operation, and (4) design and operations concepts applicable to a variety of low-cost orbital missions in the Solar System."

The above is per the abstract of an article entitled "Lunar polar orbiter: A global survey of the Moon", by James D. Burke, at:

www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/00945765779...

Credit: Science Direct website

Additionally, from the abstract to another article, "Lunar Polar Orbiter considered for 1980", by Gloria B. Lubkin:

"Another lunar mission is being studied at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the first US lunar mission since Apollo 17 in 1972. This one, to be launched in 1980, would be unmanned. It would consist of an instrumented polar‐orbiting spacecraft (at an altitude of 100 kilometers) and a smaller companion subsatellite (at an altitude of 5000 km), which would serve to track the orbiter for gravity sensing when it is hidden from the Earth by the Moon. The ensemble would be launched by a single Delta launch vehicle. The spacecraft would orbit the moon for one year, examining the Moon's surface with a variety of instruments. These would measure lunar gravity, shape, magnetism and heat flow, and allow the determination of the chemical and mineral composition of the Moon's surface."

July was the 100mm f/2.8 macro.

This is the last week, and I prioritized getting a close-up especially of his "flowery" configuration of spots around his left eye, he added the extra "look" to complete the image :-)

Commentary.

Ocean, land, harbour – an unusual configuration.

The geology of south-west Argyll provides a series of land-protected harbours and ideal sailing waters.

Therefore, this ancient but mellow coastline of Dalriada is a mecca for yachting marinas.

In this scene, looking west, Tayvallich is one of very few east-facing villages on the majestic western seaboard.

A strip of land shelters the multifarious blue, yellow, white and red craft from the Atlantic elements.

Uncommercialised, unspoilt Tayvallich in early morning reflects the land and water dwellings in a crystal-clear symmetry.

Loch Melfort, Crinan, Tayvallich, Ardfern and Craobh Haven. Hidden jewels in an immensely fractured, twisting and convoluted coastline.

With island vistas and visits to Islay, Jura, Scarba, Luing, Seil, Kerrera and Lismore these cosy, calm and peaceful harbours

act as perfect sanctuaries to the incredible sea-kingdom of Dalriada.

The Northrop N-1M, also known by the nickname "Jeep" (although I'm not sure why) was an American experimental aircraft used in the development of the flying wing concept during the 1940s.

The aircraft designer Jack Northrop became involved in innovative all-wing aircraft designs in the late-1920s, with his first flying wing being built in the 1928–1930 time period. That first prototype, the 1929 Flying Wing X-216H, had an open cockpit in the centre-wing section and single, rear-facing, pusher propeller connected to a piston engine blended into the all-wing shape. It was first test-flown in 1929 with Edward Bellande at the controls; the aircraft displayed adequate performance and was noted for its unique all-metal stressed skin and multi-cellular construction. At about this same time, Jack Northrop became aware of Walter and Reimar Horten's record-setting "tailless" flying wing glider designs being tested in Germany beginning in 1934.

The N-1M was one of a progression of experimental aircraft that further developed Northrop's all-wing concept. The aircraft was developed during 1939 and 1940 as a flying test-bed for the purpose of proving Northrop's vision of a practical flying wing. Built mostly of specially-laminated layers of glued wood, the design of both wooden wings allowed for easy configuration changes with the central blended fuselage, which was made of tubular steel. The diminutive, twin-engine test aircraft served its purpose well, first taking to the skies on 3 July 1941 at Baker Dry Lake in California.

Northrop's chief test pilot, Vance Breese, flew the N-1M on its maiden flight, unexpectedly bouncing into the air during a planned high-speed taxi run. He reported that the aircraft could fly no higher than five feet off the ground. Flight could only be sustained by maintaining a precise angle of attack, but Theodore von Kármán solved the problem by making adjustments to the trailing edges of the elevons. Control of the aircraft was achieved through the use of a system of elevons and wingtip rudders. The elevons served in tailless type aircraft both as elevators and ailerons, while split flaps on the downward angled wingtips took the place of a conventional rudder; they were later straightened after that angle proved unnecessary during flight testing.

The flight test programme continued with Moye W Stephens, Northrop test pilot and secretary to the Northrop Corporation, serving as a test pilot. The early tests showed the N-1M to be satisfactory in stability and control, but overweight and underpowered. The aircraft's two 65-hp Lycoming 0-145 four-cylinder engines (buried in the wing to reduce drag) were replaced by two 120-hp six-cylinder 6AC264F2 air-cooled Franklin engines. By November 1941, after having made some 28 flights, Stephens reported that when attempting to move the N-1M about its vertical axis, the aircraft had a tendency to "Dutch roll." The oscillations proved to be manageable when adjustments were made to the aircraft's wing configuration.

The N-1M proved to be basically sound, paving the way for Northrop's later and much larger Northrop YB-35 and YB-49 aircraft. The -1M was then donated to the US Army Air Forces in 1945 and placed in the storage collection of the National Air Museum the following year. It sat there for nearly 30 years but was finally brought back to static, non-flying status, in its final flight configuration, after several years of painstaking restoration during the 1980s. It is now on public display at the National Air and Space Museum's Steven F Udvar-Hazy Center (above).

The aircraft is tiny (5.46m long, 11.8m wide, 1.5m high and 1.77 tonnes in weight). That's in stark contrast another Northrop aircraft, the later WWII-era P-61C Black Widow night fighter which can be partially seen, towering over the rear of the -1M.

May pagka-classic ito dahil yung crown nya ang nagdala. :) Nostalgic na nostalgic talaga ang itsura nya dahil sa crown maski bagong henerasyon ang body nito.
