Bùn gì đâu, may có cái bàn màu timtím an ủi vậy

An opportunity to shamelessly mention "Flora & the Prince", the brand new oratorio I've been writing for Dundee University, and which will be premiered in Dundee on 12th March! The first performance of the complete new piece will be recorded.

I believe I met the goal of effectively using the element of composition to improve the picture I took. My picture uses the rule of thirds by my subject being placed where the lines would intersect if you could see them. I took this picture by having my brother stand in our backyard, pick up a bunch of snow, and throw it up in the air, so it would fall down on him. I also wanted to include the rule of thirds in my picture somehow, so I could have some composition. I took many pictures, but I liked this the best since the snow could be seen easily and the picture wasn't blurry. I edited the picture by turning down the amount of blue, turning up the amount of red to make his skin more skin colored, turning down the brightness, and clone stamping out distracting houses and poles in the background. I like how the photo turned out, and how I used the rule of thirds effectively. I think I could have improved the picture by retaking this picture so that the tip of his glove wouldn't be cut off.

A composition for Week 03 - Colour and texture - set by the Compositionally Challenged Group.

A series of compositions using the contrasts of colours, textures, and male/female shoes to inject some interest(!) J's shoes taking centre stage of course.

This composition uses the contrast between colour versus monochrome, and plain versus textures. Textures exaggerated in Photoshop elements 2021. The Pink shoes accented with the use of a torch.

Compositionally Challenged week 1 is Shadows.

Thanks to a tripod and a 2-second shutter delay, I was able to take a selfie of my own hands typing. The shadows were provided by a floor lamp.

Spent a fantastic couple of days over in Skye last week with a wonderful wild camp at Camasunary.

Earlier though, I took a trip up to the North of the island to photograph The Kilt Rock at sunrise. Another oft photographed Scottish landscape, and one where there is no feasible way to achieve a wildly different composition from the thousands of others taken from this spot. (bar taking out a sea kayak - now there's a thought).

Again it is a patient wait for the right light here. Not my first time photographing this place, my first attempt earlier this year was pleasing enough with some ok light, but this days light was fantastic.

Compositionally Challenged: Books

Vintage jointed doll made entirely of composition, 8 inches (20cm) high. Beautifully dressed in her original silky costume. I am not sure how old she is, but I have seen similar dolls offered for sale in their original boxes with a very 1960s/70s look. It would be interesting to know why Chinese makers were still using composition long after plastic and vinyl had come to dominate in commercial doll production. I certainly much prefer composition, even if it is prone to cracking and crazing as seen on this girl's face.

Ralph Waldo Emerson. The happiest man is he who learns from nature the lesson of worship.

Lucius Annaeus Seneca: On entering a temple we assume all signs of reverence. How much more reverent then should we be before the heavenly bodies, the stars, the very nature of God!

Pictures somehow showcasing separation of main subject with color, contrast, focus, texture or pattern, and any combination of those.

Coincidentally, after three weeks at the gym, I found out that my pledge brother was a technician at the school's human performance lab and could use me for body composition data. It was perfect timing for a check-up. So under the dexa scanner I went and the above image is a composite of my skeleton and everything else. After the nuking, results showed a gain of 4lbs of muscle and a reduction in fat. Woot!

When it came for his initiation hearing, he was asked how well he got to know his "big brother." Well, he said, "I can trace out his colon, his heart is a bit oversized, his skeleton a bit under-calcified, and he hangs to the left. I saw more than his wife will ever see!"

Compositionally Challenged week 32 is The 'Eyes' have it.

The eyes, and the facial structure around them, portray emotion and I wanted to illustrate that for this challenge. So I stood in front of a mirror and made faces at myself. The camera was set on 'Creative Shot' which creates multiple images with effects. Then I sat down at the computer and cropped as per the challenge requirement.

This is a detail crop of Composition #68. View Original for full effect.

Prints are available for sale up to 60"x60". Send me a flickrmail for details.
