Portrait of a steel factory in Abu Dhabi. It wasn't easy to find an interesting composition with some purpose and order amidst this industrial chaos. I find it incredibly rewarding to spot a pattern when there seems to be non and capture it with camera.
Tech talk: I used Nikon 14-24 ultra-wide zoom on Canon 5Dmk2 and composed my frame by keeping the foreground elements as close as possible to the lens while using the arrangement of pipes to frame the DRP tower in the center.
I started by bracketing 9-stop exposure which was later processed into an HDR tone-mapped image with Oloneo PhotoEngine Pro. Late afternoon sun created very harsh contrasting scene, hence the 9-stop HDR. It was imperative to preserve all highlight and shadow details before proceeding onto BW conversion.
This is where the real work began; I removed the existing background with Perfect Mask Pro 5.2. This is probably one of the most complex masks I ever had to extract from an image. Getting a clean alpha channel between the tiny grates on the upper edge of the image was particularly cumbersome. It took me more than 3 hours to extract a mask which was clean enough for my purpose.
I created the motion blurred cloud by painting blobs of white colour and motion-blurring/radial blurring them in Photoshop. Once I was happy with the fake long exposure sky, I placed it below the transparent foreground image. Composite was clean and I was satisfied.
Last phase was the B/W conversion. I used Silver Efex Pro and placed the Red filter over the sky which turned all blues into solid blacks. Some of the pipes in the upper and side edges of the image were quite dark and they failed to contrast well enough with the black sky. I decided to create individual layers of clouds which I moved in strategic places in order to expose the pipes where bright background was needed in order to obtain a proper separation.
Careful tweaking of the sky took approximately 1 hour until I was happy with overall detailing and luminance.
Final grade was done with Topaz ReStyle. I opted for soft/sharp look where highlights give off a bit of exposure blooming while maintaining all details with surgical sharpness.
Additional image sharpening was performed with Nik Software Sharpener Pro which intelligently adds details where it's needed while keeping the noise at minimum level in areas with low detail.

I went over the Highland Park today as I figured I'd find some Autumn Crocuses in bloom. Indeed there were some. But look at what else I found - a ready-made composition that an earlier photographer had set up - fall leaves, some fruit from a nearby tree..and...an Autumn Crocus! I didn't see how I could improve on that set-up.
I also felt a nice connection with an unseen photographer. So, whoever you are, I thank you for my picture
No luck at takeoffs this afternoon. The planes took off either very early or very late. You can see how hot it is outside with this heat haze, but I like the composition with the control tower, so here it is :-). Had more luck though with the landings!
Dos formas de conquistar el cielo se encuentran en un mismo encuadre bajo un manto de nubes. Mientras el ave transporta con esfuerzo los cimientos de su hogar, el avión surca el aire impulsado por la tecnología. Es un contraste visual entre lo ancestral y lo moderno capturado en una escala de grises atemporal. Una imagen que nos invita a reflexionar sobre las diferentes velocidades de la vida.
Το καλοκαίρι ξανά σχεδόν απόγευμα κάπου στη Νέα Υόρκη με την κόρη τους η μικρή Taylor ξεκινώντας απ' την παιδική της ηλικία στα χέρια της να κρατάει το μικρό αρκούδο, και στο βάθος ο Αντώνης η κούκλα της μάνας της και ποιο κάτω μια πραγματική ιστορία τρόμου.
Μην ξεχνάτε πως απόγευμα πέθανε έτσι τους είπαν μα το σώμα της στο τέλος δεν βρέθηκε ελπίδες πως θα τη βρουν ψέματα, και στο τέλος η αλήθεια νεκρανάσταση μπροστά τους εμφανίστηκε και στα χέρια της ο Αντώνης γεμάτος νερά ζωντανός μα συντριβάνι χωρίς νερό.
Ο ποιητής με την κόρη του σε ένα ξύλινο παγκάκι κάθονται και λίγο πιο πέρα το σιντριβάνι δίχως νερό και μια γυναίκα που η ιστορία της θα κρίνει αν είναι η μητέρα της, και στα χέρια της επίσης ο μικρός αρκούδος ολόλευκος και πεντακάθαρος σαν την κόρη του ποιητή.
Η ερώτηση της κι από περιέργεια μπαμπά μια γυναίκα στο συντριβάνι κρατώντας ένα μικρό αρκουδάκι ο δικός μου αρκούδος είναι μεγαλύτερος, το βλέπω της λέει μια στεναχωρημένη γυναίκα κι από μακριά στη μάνα σου μοιάζει κατά βάθος αργοπεθαίνει δίχως να το ξέρει.
Έπειτα από λίγο μέσα στο συντριβάνι τον άφησε ζωντανός μα δίχως σταγόνα νερό αμαρτίες που δεν πρόκειται να φύγουν εκτός και βρέξει μα είναι καλοκαίρι, ξηρασία και το δέρμα της επίσης ταλαιπωρημένο γέρασε κι ακόμα τον χρησιμοποιεί αμαρτωλοί και διψασμένοι.
Ο ποιητής τότε ήταν που από την τσάντα του έβγαλε ένα μπουκάλι με νερό δίνοντας το στη μικρή του κόρη πιες να ξεδιψάσεις της λέει, κι από μακριά όπως τώρα βλέπεις ο μικρός και λερωμένος της αρκούδος ακόμα υποφέρει περιμένοντας το μάννα εξ ουρανού μια συγχώρεση.
Ύστερα από λίγο έφυγε αφήνοντας τον στο σιντριβάνι δίχως νερό παρακαλώντας τον θεό έτσι ο ποιητής κι από μακριά πίστεψε διότι ψηλά κοιτούσε, κατά τα άλλα εγκατάλειψη νεαρού παιδιού έξω από την πόρτα σας στο σπίτι σας με τον ποιητή και την κόρη τους να φεύγουν.
Καθώς έφευγαν του είπε μπαμπά πως το μικρό της αρκουδάκι το παράτησε μέσα στο σιντριβάνι να το πάρουμε μαζί μας με την απάντηση του να είναι πως θα ξαναγυρίσει, πως ο Αντώνης ακόμα ζει δεν έχει πεθάνει το μόνο που του λείπει είναι το νερό της δημιουργίας του.
Φεύγουμε τις λέει επιστρέφουμε στο σπίτι μας με την μικρή Taylor κάθε τόσο πίσω να κοιτάζει και με τον πατέρα την να της λέει η ζωή συνεχίζεται μα ο Αντώνης δεν ξέρω αν στο τέλος επιβιώσει γεννήθηκε ακόμα ζει με το πεπρωμένο του να βρίσκεται μέσα σε ένα σιντριβάνι.
Μονάχος και χωρίς νερό κάποιοι θα τον χαρακτηρίσουν ως τρελό ο καιρός θα δείξει το πότε και το πώς τα λόγια του ποιητή στην κόρη του, κι αυτή για μια ακόμα φορά πίσω της κοίταξε φωνάζοντας μπαμπά μπαμπά ένας σκύλος στο στόμα του το μικρό της αρκουδάκι.
Ο διάβολος λίγο πιο πέρα βρισκόταν και με την μορφή ενός αδέσποτου σκυλιού τους παρακολουθούσε κι όταν για λίγο από τα μάτια της τον άφησε μέσα στο σιντριβάνι, αμέσως τον άρπαξε αρχίζοντας κι ως μέρος του παιχνιδιού του να τον κατασπαράζει τελικά πέθανε.
