A friend gave me this hand warmer as a present. When you press down on the metal disc suspended in the liquid, the liquid begins to crystallise, at the same time releasing a surprising amount of heat. To reset it, you simply boil it in water until the crystals disappear.
I thought the whole crystalisation process so fascinating that I had to take a photograph of it. The 10 shots you see here show the process in time lapse, from left to right, as my wife presses down on the metal disc. The whole thing takes less than 10 seconds to crystallise completely and start releasing heat.
