Composite of smoke images and flower.

Went to Aberystwyth yesterday. It was warm and sunny in town, so much so we sat outside to have lunch. Down on the beach, it was another story.

I'd like to say that's why I had my camera set up wrong. It wasn't. I was just being a dick. As for these shots resulting in my first try at compositing... Mark had his eyes closed in 50% of them and the dogs had their arseholes pointed at the camera for most of the rest. This is the combination of three separate images to come up with one half decent one.

We won't talk about the level of noise from my camera being set to ISO 100 in such overcast conditions. Maybe I'll reframe less between shots next time too.

Composite shot of the old riverside wharves - now gentrified into a pedestrian way, with the old buildings converted to flats - of Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. These views are actually taken from the other side of the River Trent to the Town, so are actually taken of Lincolnshire, but from Nottinghamshire. Much of the old waterfront dates back 200 years and more, and is evidence of more prosperous times, when the Town was one of the busiest inland ports in England.

yes, its a little (a lot) "cut-and-paste-y" but it was interesting to work through the difficulties of doing composite and green screen photography (matching lighting, perspective, shadows, blending edges, etc.) and I'm ready to go learn more so the next one is even better. Here are the original photos.

So just to get something posted, once I combined the photos (select>>color range on the green screen), I applied a lot of different layers to minimize the most glaring problem, the mismatched lighting. I tried to pull over the shadows from the greenscreen images but that was leaving too many other artifects of the green (and again, I wasn't trying to spend too much time, just a quick attempt). There are obviously other issues, the next most glaring one that I think I'll need to learn is to blend the edges into each other.

The green screen is thanks to Alan and Terrance at the latest garage shoot for the Seattle Flickr Group. About 30-40 photographers with over 10 different set ups including green screen, 3 different motorsycles and a lot of models.

I've been taking photos of street scenes lately, attempting to stitch them together... This is a view from yesterday, an area close to my office, looking south down Peachtree Street. (Larger view is a little more interesting if you're interested in Peachtree Street.)

Two originals from Library of Congress; composited, repaired, and colorized. Since the originals are in the mirror-reverse like all of those early daguerreotypes, I decided to leave the restoration that way also. While working on this image, it occurred to me that the two originals were not intended as an end in themselves but made to serve as a portrait artist’s reference for a painting. An artist’s studio sitting would have required far too much time for the subjects. The early daguerreotypes were a hastle; however, they were often used by artists to project a much larger first impression on canvas. Color was also in the artist’s professional advantage in going this route. I have never seen any such painting of the Lincolns that were taken from these originals. Maybe the project never materialized. Perhaps this is why the their arms fit together so well; it was part of someone’s clever plan way back there in time past.

For Our Daily Topic - Wheels

Homework assignment for Anne Edgar's photoshop course - also through the Cambridge Library and Gallery. Top - left is a simple cropped shot; bottom left - spun on an Ikea lazy susan to suggest the turning of a pottery wheel; right - multiple exposures of the vase moved slightly as to overlap, then adjusted, rotated and cropped. All three shots done in a photo box. BTW - there is no Grand River Pottery that I know of - I made it up. www.anneedgarphoto.com/
