Today my volks tanned bodies arrived! I was happy and sad at the same time, since I had to pay really high taxes. Anyways... I was so excited that I decided to take some comparison photos. The thing is that it was already dark so they're not really good.

From left to right: volks tan 22cm (for my future Katoya), Dal stock body, obitsu 21cm white and obitsu 23cm white.

Comparison of the skull of a spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta) with a gray wolf (Canis lupus), a coyote (Canis latrans), and a domestic dog of mixed breed (Canis familiaris).

Clockwise from upper right: hyena, dog, coyote, wolf.

Spend some time observing the differences between each skull.

Most apparent in this picture is the difference in width of the jaws, and the differences in the size of the sagittal crest at the back of the skull. The coyote's crest is the smallest, indicating that it has the weakest jaw strength.

Some dog breeds lack this crest almost entirely. This specimen has a fairly well-developed crest for a medium-sized dog.

Totally didn't realize that I didn't upload my box opening + comparisons onto Flickr.

Comparison of the center versus corner performance of the Leica Vario-Elmar-R 21-35 f/3.5-4 with a Metabones Speed Booster on a Sony NEX-3. Both images at 15mm f/2.9 (the lens was set to 21mm f/3.5). Left image is crop of extreme corner; right image is crop of center. Both images were focused using the 14x live view focus aid. The corner crop was taken at a focus distance of approximately 8 feet, while the center crop was taken at just to the side of the infinity setting. Actual distance between sensor and chimney: approximately 90 feet (calculated using gmap-pedometer.com).

My conclusion:

The Vario-Elmar 21-35, combined with the Speed Booster, has substantial field curvature. (I believe this is due to the zoom lens' nature, not the adapter.) When this is accounted for, however, light editing can reveal meaningful details in even the extreme corners. Pulling back from optimum center focus will result in increased corner focus performance, assuming the same subject distance. Adjusting focus distance can then be considered akin to using small apertures: if one is willing to sacrifice peak performance, meaningful gains can be found elsewhere at the photographer's discretion.

Notes:

Center crop is enlarged 3:1; corner crop is enlarged 2:1. This is to compensate for perspective distortion, giving the subject approximately the same visual size.

Light edits were made in Lightroom. The corner crop has enhanced contrast and clarity. Both crops have edits for chromatic aberrations. I only spent a few minutes trying to equalize the two; as they're both in excess of 100% crops, feel welcome to download the original image and make your own edits.

42 pounds later...

Knowing that Europeans eat cheese, cream, potatoes, bread and pasta and, yet, aren't chronically obese, I made a point of NOT giving up those things. I love those things. They make me happy. And, indeed, when I eat raw veggies, my stomach sounds like Treebeard. Instead, I've stuck to 1200-1400 calorie count a day. I've been Ms Portion Control - I do eat spaghetti, but I don't each much of it. Instead of thinking, "I'll never be able to eat potatoes again", I plan a fantastic supper absolutely celebrating potatoes, and lovingly prepare them - and eat half a serving if I had more than a salad or Glucerna for lunch. Breakfast is just coffee, and I'll switch back to cereal eventually - just not now. I still ate two Christmas cookies or a piece of chocolate every night in December and every month since then, and if that kept me from losing weight more quickly FUCK IT because cookies are DELICIOUS. And I have a cheat day once a week where I get to eat up to 1800 calories. Those cheat days are great days... no, seriously, they are fantastic. I am so happy after them. Food makes me feel whole. I don't mean gorging myself - I'm not a binge eater. I mean just having a simple, delicious meal. But I can't eat like other people - like my Mom, who can eat everything I do and stay oh-so- fit and trim. Or like most of my friends, who can eat two or three meals a day. I can't do that without gaining weight. So I'm accepting the reality that I cannot eat three meals a day, that I cannot eat until I'm full - I have to pick an amount, put it on my plate, and that's IT.

Stan is 5'9" and Mom...isn't. Stan is 13, mom..isn't..

Bibi Ka Maqbara (Urdu: بیبی كا مقبرا, Hindi, Marathi: बीबी का मकबरा) is a maqbara built by Prince Azam Shah, son of Emperor Aurangzeb, one of the Mughal Emperors, in the late 17th century as a loving tribute to his mother, Rabia Durrani alias Dilras Banu Begum. The comparison to the Taj Mahal has resulted in a general ignorance of the monument. This monument is also called the Dakkhani Taj or the Taj of the Deccan.Originally planned to rival the Taj Mahal (but was prevented from doing so due to budgetary constraints--Aurangzeb gave Azam Shah Rs. 7,00,000 only for the construction, where Taj Mahal's cost was 32 million Rupees approximately). It is situated in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. The tomb in itself represents the transition from the ostentatious architecture of Akbar and Shah Jahan to the simple architecture of the later Mughals.

After successful completion of the Phase-I of the Ajanta-Ellora Conservation and Tourism Development Project with loan assistance from the Japan Bank of International Cooperation (JBIC), the works for Phase-II have been taken up. An integrated programme of comprehensive conservation, chemical preservation and overall environment development of Bibi-ka-Maqbara along with various other monuments has been taken up in Phase-II of the project with an outlay of Rs.37.68 crores.

A comparison image to aid identification of the mystery mandible. From top, is a Muntjac deer mandible (Muntiacus reevesi); middle is a very elderly Roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) with extremely worn teeth, and finally the mystery mandible. My problem is that I have only one specimen of the Muntjac and Roe mandibles so I am not at all sure that they are particularly representative of their species. Both seem to have much more angular angular processes than the mystery mandible, and are actually rather more lightly built.

I always like a size comparison photo! :D

It gives my viewers a good sense of the different sizes, IMO.

Fed 3.5 at 6.3

(All shots taken on a Leica M9)

Since I'm one photo away from my 3000th post, I thought it'd be funny to post a photo of myself for anyone who's curious as to what I look like. However, there are plenty of photos of me on here if you know where to look so I decided to post this comparison photo instead. Both photos were taken on the same bridge which crosses the Keil Burn, near Lower Largo.
