BREEDING TIME. This one was chasing a female and performing (and warning off the photographer?).

Rufous Whistler

Scientific Name: Pachycephala rufiventris

Description: The Rufous Whistler is a stocky bird with a large head, short stubby bill and a narrow, relatively long tail with a square or slightly forked tip. The sexes differ, with the male dark-grey above with a white throat, black breast and a reddish underbody. Many males also have a black face mask (except in northern subspecies). Females are dull grey to brown, with streaked underparts. Young birds are much redder than adults and have heavily streaked underparts.

Similar species: The male Rufous Whistler is quite distinctive with its reddish underparts, grey head and white throat, combined with black mask (over most of range). The female and immature birds can be distinguished from most other whistlers by heavy streaking on the underparts.

Distribution: Found throughout mainland Australia, the Rufous Whistler is also found in New Caledonia.

Habitat: The Rufous Whistler is found in forests, woodlands and shrublands, with a shrubby understorey. Is also found in gardens and farmland with some trees, and in remnant bushland patches.

Seasonal movements: Sedentary, with some seasonal migratory movements in eastern Australia; south during spring and north in autumn.

Feeding: The Rufous Whistler mainly eats insects, and sometimes seeds, fruit or leaves. It usually forages at higher levels than other whistlers, and rarely is seen on the ground.

Breeding: The Rufous Whistler breeds in monogamous pairs, and both sexes incubate the eggs and care for the young. The female builds a fragile, cup-shaped nest from twigs, grass, vines and other materials, bound and attached to a tree fork with spider web. Two broods may be produced in a season.

Calls: A long loud series of ringing notes.

Minimum Size: 16cm

Maximum Size: 18cm

Average size: 17cm

Average weight: 25g

Breeding season: July to February

Clutch Size: Usually 2, sometimes 3

Incubation: 13 days

Nestling Period: 11 days

Silvereye

Scientific Name: Zosterops lateralis

Description: The Silvereye is a small bird with a conspicuous ring of white feathers around the eye, and belongs to a group of birds known as white-eyes. The Silvereye shows interesting plumage variations across its range. The grey back and olive-green head and wings are found in birds through the east, while western birds have a uniformly olive-green back. Breeding birds of the east coast have yellow throats, pale buff flanks (side of the belly) and white on the undertail. Tasmanian birds have grey throats, chestnut flanks and yellow on the undertail. To complicate this, the birds in the east have regular migrations within Australia and may replace each other in their different areas for parts of the year. Birds in Western Australia have yellowish olive, rather than grey, backs.

Similar species: There is only one similar species found on Australia's mainland. The Yellow White-eye, Z. luteus, lives in Australia's north and north-west. It is more brightly coloured above, is lemon yellow below and has a smaller white eye-ring. The ranges of the two species do overlap slightly.

Distribution: Silvereyes are more common in the south-east of Australia, but their range extends from Cape York Peninsula, Queensland, through the south and south-west to about Shark Bay, Western Australia. They are also found in Tasmania.

Habitat: Silvereyes may occur in almost any wooded habitat, especially commercial orchards and urban parks and gardens.

Seasonal movements: In the south of their range, Silvereyes move north each autumn, and move back south in late winter to breed. Although one of Australia's smallest birds, the Silvereye is capable of travelling great distances during migration, with Silvereyes from the most southerly regions of Tasmania travelling all the way up to Southern Queensland.

Feeding: Silvereyes feed on insect prey and large amounts of fruit and nectar, making them occasional pests of commercial orchards. Birds are seen alone, in pairs or small flocks during the breeding season, but form large flocks in the winter months.

Breeding: Silvereye pairs actively defend a small territory. The nest is a small, neatly woven cup of grasses, hair, and other fine vegetation, bound with spider web. It is placed in a horizontal tree fork up to 5m above the ground. The nest is constructed by both sexes, who both also incubate the bluish-green eggs. If conditions are suitable two to three clutches will be raised in a season.

Calls: The contact call, a thin "psip", is given persistently.

Minimum Size: 10cm

Maximum Size: 12cm

Average size: 11cm

Average weight: 11g

Breeding season: August to February; later in the north

Clutch Size: 2 to 3, rarely 4

Cockatiel

Scientific Name: Nymphicus hollandicus

Description: The Cockatiel is an unusual member of the cockatoo family. It is small in size, and has a slender body and long pointed tail, which is more characteristic of the smaller parrots. Its plumage is mostly grey, paler below, with a white wing patch, orange cheeks and a distinctive pointed crest. The male can be identified by its bright yellow forehead, face and crest. Young Cockatiels resemble the adult female, although the young males usually have a brighter yellow face. The Cockatiel is not found naturally in any other country, but is a popular cage bird, second only to the Budgerigar, Melopsittacus undulates. The Cockatiel does not have the screeching voice of many other parrots and may learn to 'speak'.

Distribution: The Cockatiel is widespread throughout mainland Australia, but is uncommon in Tasmania, with only a few sightings being reported to date.

Habitat: The Cockatiel is seen in pairs or small flocks, in most types of open country, usually near water. It is common throughout its range, especially in the north and the more arid inland areas.

Seasonal movements: Throughout its range, the Cockatiel is strongly nomadic, moving around in response to the availability of food and water.

Feeding: Cockatiels feed on a variety of grass seeds, nuts, berries and grain. They may feed either on the ground or in trees, and always in small to large numbers. Cockatiels roost in trees near water and travel from these areas in large flocks to feeding grounds.

Breeding: Cockatiels may breed at any time, in response to suitable periods of rain, especially in the more arid regions. Both sexes share the incubation of the eggs, which are laid in a hollow, high up in trees. Suitable trees are either in or close to water. Cockatiels enter the nest hollow tail first.

Calls: Although mostly silent, the Cockatiel gives a long and distinctive "queel-queel" in flight. It does not have the screeching voice of many other parrots and may learn to 'speak'.

Minimum Size: 30cm

Maximum Size: 33cm

Average size: 32cm

Average weight: 90g

Breeding season: Normally July to December in south of range

Clutch Size: 2 to 9, usually 5

Incubation: 19 days

Nestling Period: 30 days

How can a library, a theatre and other cultural partners successfully coexist under one roof? Firstly by breaking down the walls...and secondly, by combining the architecture of public space with the design of programmability. The result is called Hub Kerkrade: not only a resource centre, but also a hotbed of knowledge, information, education and entertainment.

Kerkrade is a city in the southernmost province of the Netherlands, close to Germany. Hub Kerkrade, located in a former shopping centre, has a surface area of no less than 5,000 m2, which houses the theatre, the library, various cultural partners and the nearby Kerkrade Music School. This location is part of the revitalised city centre. The design of the Hub is a new co-creation of international creative guide and architect Aat Vos (design concept, strategy, creative direction) in collaboration with Mars Interior Designers (design, engineering).

Originally, the library occupied half of the building's surface and was separated from the theatre by a wall. The removal of the partitions created more space, light and a new idea for the foyer. This almost always empty space has been transformed into a multifunctional shared living space where people can work, study or meet. The focal point of this space is in the foyer: the theatre staircase is equipped with a beautiful banister and a reddish-pink carpet, covered on both sides with blue steel. The foyer bar was made of copper and is now set against a background of raw bricks, combined with an LED screen and a light box. The "break drinks cabinet" steals the show, both in terms of its size and the colour-changing lighting.

__

After work a couple weeks ago, I stopped by the art festival in Hammonton, New Jersey to visit and pay my cousin some support ! *So happy for her*. I went to visit her at her booth, which was awesome BTW! (She is such a talented artist!) I have always been her # 1 fan.. and her mine! :)

Well, we parked our car over by the antique shop.. So on our way out we decided to swing by the antique shop (which we do a couple times a month or more.. to check out what they have!) And I had my camera with me, (because I took some photos of Lori at her art stand).. So I decided to take some photos.. (not even thinking about the challenge). I was really intrigued by this doll. AT FIRST, I thought she was creepy.. But after photographing her an looking at this photo.. I've begun to love her. She is very old and slightly damanged.. and I think that's what really creeped me out about her. However, I think she's beautiful.. and I hope she finds a great home! And for the price she was..I KNOW that whoever buys her will take VERY good care of her! So that makes me happy.. Because she seems so lonely to me. If I was okay with spending the amount that was on her price tag on a doll, I might have considered it.. But she's just gorgeous. And I love her. I'm so glad I took this photo..

___

I hope that everyone out there is doing well. I've been really REALLY enjoying church every week. We've begun our OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD & I also have got a couple of my co-workers involved too (which is awesome)! If you're unaware of what *Operation Christmas Child* is.. I'll briefly explain: Each year we get a shoebox and a list of OK items. We pick an age group and fill the box for them.. (toys and essentials). Juan and I always choose the older children (11-14yrs I believe) - he does a boy and I do a girl. We choose that particular age because apparently most people want to do YOUNG children so they have the least amount of gifts for the older kids.. So we make sure to cater to them each year. Anyway, you can fill the box with essentials (soap, tools, sewing kits, fishing kits, hair brushes, notebooks, pencils and sharpeners etc.. & something special *like one main item*. You can also include a note / photo of yourself. - When the child receives this shoebox filled with goodies, they also get a lesson on Jesus Christ.. and a booklet to teach them about him. They are told about how people from far away care about them so much and want to bring them closer to God and help them. **

--

>> So also, we were told that many of the boxes go to teh whole family.. So the child brings them home and maybe the mom gets the sewing kit, the dad some tools, etc.. So we make sure to think about that when filling the boxes. Doing this each year REALLY means A LOT to us!

>>Also, the past couple weeks at church they showed us some videos.. Some of the videos are of the children telling their story of when they received the box.. and the lesson about Jesus.. and how it changed their lives, etc. And how NOW they believe in God.. & they're so grateful for that box. etc.

So, a couple weeks ago they showed us a video of HOW SOME OF THE BOXES GET TO THESE CHILDREN..

>>>It BLEW OUR MINDS!! I still cannot get over what I saw!

-First it shows them loading up the boxes into planes, boats, etc. Then it shows them getting to the larger cities in jungles, etc around the world.. Then it shows dedicated indivudals who risk their health/sometimes lives even (to venture into the jungles/mountains/even walk across streams on slippery logs) carrying several boxes, or bags of boxes with them... a group of people.. carrying these boxes to little villages in the middle of no where. Then it shows them sitting around while the children learn about God.. and giving the kids the boxes. I cried.

.. It is such a great feeling. I am so grateful to be able to be a part of this mission each year.

If anyone is interested in it, you could message me and I can send you a link TO the project.. *It's a big charity organization thing*. And it's my favorite .. it's so beautiful and it makes me feel so good.

I just found out that they actually recommend collecting stuff for the boxes ALL year each year.. I guess when you see a sale, etc. So we're going to do that now for next year.. We actually just found a sale on cray ons, markers, notebooks, and colored pencils at Walmart the other day (25 cent and 15 cents - YES you read right!) So we bought EXTRA - for this year and next year. Pretty awesome.

Juan found the coolest little hammer for his box, for the boy... It's a smaller metal hammer with approx 5 screwdrivers and stuff INSIDE the handle.. (it's so cool how it works) i was blown away and I'm so glad he found it! He also got the boy stuff for fishing, sewing, a tape measure, among many other things..

______________

I just thought I'd let you all know what's going on and how I've been.. We're DOING VERY WELL! - Praying for you ALL- ALWAYS! Have a fantastic week!

Masked Lapwing

Scientific Name: Vanellus miles

Description: Masked Lapwings are large, ground-dwelling birds that are closely related to the waders. The Masked Lapwing is mainly white below, with brown wings and back and a black crown. Birds have large yellow wattles covering the face, and are equipped with a thorny spur that projects from the wrist on each wing. The spur is yellow with a black tip. The Masked Lapwing has two subspecies resident in Australia. The southern subspecies has black on the hind neck and sides of breast, and has smaller facial wattles. Northern birds are smaller, without the partial black collar, but have a much larger wattle, which covers most of the side of the face. The sexes are similar in both subspecies, although the male tends to have a larger spur. Young Masked Lapwings are similar to the adult birds, but may have a darker back. The wing spur and facial wattles are either absent or smaller in size. The southern subspecies is also known as the Spur-winged Plover.

Similar species: The Banded Lapwing, V. tricolor, is much smaller (25 cm to 29 cm). It has a mostly black head and upper breast, with a distinct white eyestripe and bib. It also has a distinctive red patch at the base of the bill.

Distribution: The Masked Lapwing is common throughout northern, central and eastern Australia. Masked Lapwings are also found in Indonesia, New Guinea, New Caledonia and New Zealand. The New Zealand and New Caledonian populations have been formed from birds that have flown there from Australia.

Habitat: The Masked Lapwing inhabits marshes, mudflats, beaches and grasslands. It is often seen in urban areas. Where this bird is used to human presence, it may tolerate close proximity; otherwise it is very wary of people, and seldom allows close approach.

Feeding: Masked Lapwings feed on insects and their larvae, and earthworms. Most food is obtained from just below the surface of the ground, but some may also be taken above the surface. Birds are normally seen feeding alone, in pairs or in small groups.

Breeding: Masked Lapwings may breed when conditions are suitable. Both sexes share the building of the nest, which is a simple scrape in the ground away from ground cover. This nest is often placed in inappropriate locations, such as school playing fields or the roofs of buildings. Both sexes also incubate the eggs and care for the young birds. The young birds are born with a full covering of down and are able to leave the nest and feed themselves a few hours after hatching.

The Masked Lapwing is notorious for its defence of its nesting site. This is particularly the case after the chicks have hatched. Adults will dive on intruders, or act as though they have a broken wing in an attempt to lure the intruder away from the nest.

Minimum Size: 33cm

Maximum Size: 38cm

Average size: 36cm

Breeding season: At any time of the year

Clutch Size: 3 to 5
