Geelwangschildpad (Trachemys scripta troosti) by Mia Moreau

Geelwangschildpadden zijn koudbloedig, dat betekent dat ze hun temperatuur niet zelf kunnen regelen zoals wij dat kunnen.

Geelwangschilpadden komen vooral in het zuiden van de Verenigde Staten voor, waar een subtropisch klimaat heerst en de temperatuur niet onder de 18 °C komt. Ze leven voornamelijk in drassige en moerasachtige gebieden met allerlei beekjes en meren. Als er maar stromend water is.

Geelwangschildpadden kunne lopen op het land en kunnen uitermate goed zwemmen. Ze ‘praten’ met elkaar door te trillen en door elkaar aan te raken, ook kunnen ze erg goed ruiken. Ze houden geen winterslaap maar een winterrust.

Geelwangschildpadden zijn overdag actief, 's avonds slapen ze in het water.
