Last flames in the silky oaks of a bushfire in the desert uplands in November 2012 which burnt out about 50,000 hectares..
I like this part of outback Australia around Barcaldine. The textures of the dense woodland against the red soil are wonderful under the bright light.
The Desert Uplands Region covers 75,000 square kilometers of Outback Queensland. Straddling the Great Dividing Range and between coastal and inland catchments, this elevated landscape has created unique internally draining lakes and is the headwaters of two major catchments (the Burdekin and Lake Eyre Basin) that almost split the region in half, north-south.
1182169628_desert_uplands_map.jpg
The region extends to the north of the Flinders Highway near Torrens Creek whilst the southern boundary is approximately 50 km north west of Tambo. The area is bounded by a line from Blackall to Hughenden through Barcaldine in the west and the Belyando River in the east. Towns within the Desert Uplands are Barcaldine, Jericho, Alpha, Hughenden, Prairie, Torrens Creek, Pentland, Aramac, and Muttaburra.
The term âdesert' is used to describe the bioregion because of the abundance of spinifex, a hardy, spiny-leaved tussock forming grass common to the drier inland areas of Australia and the predominant red coloured soils, along with the semi-arid climate. Although the soils are sandy, the area is well covered with native trees, shrubs and grasses, unlike the traditional view of a desert comprising loose, slow moving sand dunes. The red earths of the Desert Uplands are morphologically and chemically similar to the soils of the Mulga lands.
The Desert Uplands Bioregion is characterised by hard, red sandy soils with relatively low fertility. Sandstone ridges and sand plains dominate the landscape, supporting predominantly native pastures, including; spinifex (Triodia pungens spp.), wire grasses (Aristida spp.), and small patches of Mitchell grass (Astrebla spp.). Buffel (Cenchrus ciliaris) grass, an introduced pasture species can be found throughout the region. The majority of the area is heavily timbered with species such as Desert oak (Acacia coriacea), Gidyea (Acacia cambagei), Box (Eucalyptus populnea), Ironbark (Eucalyptus melanophloia), Yellow Jacket (Eucalyptus similis), and a number of Wattles (Acacia spp.).
Sandstone ranges and sand and clay plains dominate, with Mitchell grasslands in the west and narrow patches of Brigalow in the east. To the north the region abuts granite ranges and basalt tablelands. To the south the sandstone continues into the Carnavon Ranges. (Source: www.desertuplands.org.au)

Bearded Tit or Bearded Reedling Notes:-
The bearded reedling is a small, sexually dimorphic reed-bed passerine bird (Sexual dimorphism is the condition where the sexes of the same species exhibit different characteristics, particularly characteristics not directly involved in reproduction. The condition occurs in most animals and some plants). It is frequently known as the bearded tit, due to some similarities to the long-tailed tit, or the bearded parrotbill. It is the only species in the family Panuridae. Wikipedia
Scientific name: Panurus biarmicus
1. Not a bearded tit
Despite its name, the bearded tit is neither bearded nor a tit! It actually has a moustachioed-look to its plumage and for a while it was considered a member of the parrotbill family, but now it is thought to be more closely related to larks.
2. Reedbed inhabitant
Bearded tits are the only British songbird to stay in reedbeds all year round. Originally they were limited by the availability of reedbeds in Britain, but thanks to newly created or expanded reedbeds, they are now more widespread and can be found in parts of eastern and southern England, Morecambe Bay in northwest England and around the Tay estuary in Scotland.
3. Occasional movements
Although bearded tits are not well known for migration, there is some movement in the autumn through local dispersal. On occasion, there is also an influx of continental birds from mainland Europe. They are more gregarious outside of the breeding season, and therefore tend to be easier to see.
4. Breeding behaviour
There are only around 630 breeding pairs of bearded tits found in Britain, most likely due to the fact that they are limited by habitat. They build their nests low down in the reeds, often on piles of dead reed stems. They will use specially designed nest boxes, which were created to bypass their susceptibility to flooding. They are prolific breeders that can have up to four broods a year, with four to eight eggs per brood!

5. Alterations
Bearded tits survive in the reedbeds all year round by changing their diet from insects during the spring and summer, to seeds in the autumn and winter. They cope with this by altering their gut morphology, and by eating large amounts of grit particles that help to grind down the tough seed fibres.
6. Vulnerability
Due to their range restriction, bearded tit populations can be vulnerable to particularly harsh winters, flooding and saltwater inundation into reedbeds. As a result local extinctions can occur. For example, in the cold winter of 1947 the East Anglian population decreased to just four or five pairs in Suffolk and a lone male in Norfolk. It is thought that the snow cover prevented them from accessing the seeds they needed to survive.
7. ‘Moustachioed tits’
Bearded tits are sandy brown with long tails, yellow bills and eyes. The males have grey heads with a conspicuous black ‘moustache’ that flanks the throat. Females are duller and lack the moustache. They have a distinctive ‘ping’ call when they fly, which you will usually hear before you see them.

Ushuaia is the capital of Provincia de Tierra del Fuego, Antártida e Islas del Atlántico Sur Province, Argentina.
It is commonly regarded as the southernmost city in the world.
Ushuaia was founded on October 12, 1884, and the meaning of its name in Yámana language is "bay that penetrates towards the west."
Ushuaia is located in a wide bay on the southern coast of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, bounded on the north by the Martial mountain range and on the south by the Beagle Channel.
