(part of a project I'm working on for my photo class. It's one of three for a "hoax". My idea is that there are cannibals in the mirrors that kidnap people. My teacher has a preference for more non-cutesty photography.)

Peaceful Dove
Scientific Name: Geopelia striata
Description: The Peaceful Dove is a small, sturdy dove, with a long graduated tail and wedge-shaped wings. The eye-ring, eye and cere (the soft parts above the bill) are all blue-grey. The upper body is mainly brown-grey, with dark barring. The head and lower throat is a softer grey, with dark scallops. The throat is white and lower body pinkish. The feet are a deep pink. They are usually seen in pairs or small parties, never far from water. The flight is direct, low to the ground and undulating. Their call is very distinctive and is the source of one of their common names, 'Doodle-Doo'. They also may be called the Placid, Zebra or Barred Dove.
Similar species: The Peaceful Dove has a similar shape but is larger than the Diamond Dove, G. cuneata, and is much smaller than the Bar-shouldered Dove,G. humeralis, which has a bronze shoulder patch. They can also be distinguished by their characteristic calls.
Distribution: Peaceful Doves are found in Asia, south Burma and the Malay peninsula, through Indochina to eastern New Guinea and Australia, where it is widespread in the north west, north and eastern mainland. They have been widely introduced to islands.
Habitat: Peaceful Doves are found in open dry woodland with a grassy understorey and the edges of rainforest. In drier areas, they are often in woodland beside rivers, pandanus and vine thickets. They feed on the ground and roost in trees.
Seasonal movements: Peaceful Doves are sedentary, though some seasonal changes in distribution occur in the south and flocks may form briefly in some areas.
Feeding: Peaceful Doves forage on the ground in open, bare areas, in paddocks, beside roads and in gardens. They feed mainly on small seeds of grasses and sedges, and sometimes small insects. They need to drink at least twice a day.
Breeding: Peaceful Doves place their nests in trees or shrubs, including in garden and street trees. They build a small, flimsy platform of twigs, grasses and roots, which is built by both parents. Both parents also feed the young, with 'crop milk' or small seeds.
Calls: A musical 'doodle-doo' repeated often and a loud 'coo-lo-lue'.
Minimum Size: 20cm
Maximum Size: 24cm
Average size: 22cm
Average weight: 54g
Breeding season: August to April
Clutch Size: 2
Incubation: 14 days
Nestling Period: 16 days

Black-fronted Dotterel
Scientific Name: Elseyornis melanops
Description: The Black-fronted Dotterel is a small wader with a distinctive black face-mask and breast-band and prominent chestnut scapulars (shoulder feathers). In juveniles, the breast-band is initially absent but a brown band slowly appears as the bird develops. Legs are pink orange, and the bill is red with a black tip. The dark eye is ringed with red. In flight the wings look broad and the tail short, while the black and white contrast is striking. Flight is slow with almost hesitant wing beats. This species is also called the Black-fronted Plover.
Similar species: The adult and immature Black-fronted Dotterel are unmistakable, though the juvenile could be confused with the juvenile and immature Red-capped Plover.
Distribution: The Black-fronted Dotterel is widespread throughout Australasia.
Habitat: The Black-fronted Dotterel is found in the shallow margins of wetlands, lakes, rivers, sewage farms, storm drains and marshes. It is normally always near freshwater and is not often seen on the coast.
Seasonal movements: Breeding resident.
Feeding: The Black-fronted Dotterel eats small molluscs as well as aquatic and terrestrial insects. When it forages, it keeps its body horizontal while bobbing its head to look for food, often running then stopping suddenly to peck at food items.
Breeding: The Black-fronted Dotterel lays its eggs in a shallow scrape, often on pebbly ground and quite close to water. It may have more then one brood per year. Both parents incubate the eggs and look after the young.
Calls: Sharp 'tip' call, singular or repeated three or four times.
Minimum Size: 16cm
Maximum Size: 18cm
Average size: 17cm
Average weight: 32g
Breeding season: September to February
Clutch Size: 2 to 3 eggs
Incubation: 27 days
Nestling Period: 25 days

An experienced observer can find as many as 70 species in one hour of observation during the spring about 10% of all Australia's bird species and several times the diversity one could find walking the suburbs. In the past eleven years over 190 species have been recorded on the Common. (Source: University of Queensland)
Double-barred Finch
Scientific Name: Taeniopygia bichenovii
Description: The Double-barred Finch is one of the long-tailed grass-finches and is notable for its 'owl-faced' features, having a white face bordered black. It is grey-brown, with white underparts banded black above and below the chest, giving the species its name. The wings are black, spotted white, the tail is black and the bill and legs are blueish-grey. Juveniles are dulller, with indistinct chest bars. These grass-finches usually feed in flocks and have a bouncing, undulating flight pattern.
Similar species: There are two subspecies of Double-barred Finch: the eastern race has a white rump and the western race has a black rump. Otherwise, distinguished form other finches by its 'owl-face'.
Distribution: The Double-barred Finch is found in the Kimberley region through to west of the Gulf of Carpentaria (the western race annulosa), and then from Cape York down the east coast to south-eastern Victoria (the eastern race, bichenovii).
Habitat: The Double-barred Finch prefers dry grassy woodlands and scrublands, open forests and farmlands. It is never far from water.
Seasonal movements: Nomadic; only an occasional visitor to extreme south-eastern part of range.
Feeding: The Double-barred Finch feeds on the ground on seeds. It will also take insects, especially when breeding. It usually feeds in groups or flocks of up to 40 birds.
Breeding: The Double-barred Finch builds a rounded nest, with a side entrance and short tunnel into a inner chamber lined with fine grass, feathers and plant down. The nest is placed between 1 m to 5 m from the ground in pandanus or thick shrubs, or even in the eaves of a building, often close to an active wasps' nest. Both parents incubate and feed the young.
The nestlings of Double-barred Finches beg with their heads down to one side. This is unique to the grass-finch and waxbill family.
Calls: A brassy, drawn-out 'tzeeaat, tzeeaat'; also a low 'tat tat'
Minimum Size: 10cm
Maximum Size: 12cm
Average size: 11cm
Average weight: 10g
Breeding season: After rain in north and inland.
Clutch Size: 4 to 7 eggs
Incubation: 14 days
Nestling Period: 21 days

The roof cracks beneath my feet. The coward has fled to the other side before I arrived.
“Look what the cat dragged in.”
I clench my fists in anger.
“Did it feel good? Killing him? Killing a poor defenseless man. A man who was my friend!” I shout.
He smiles.
“Oh it felt good. But I didn't kill just him. I killed his whore wife and the nurses attending him. Nothing better than a good barbeque, ay?” He laughs at me.
“You will pay for your deeds Solar. I'll personally make sure of it.”
“Then what are you waiting for? I'm yours.”
We stare into each other's eyes, waiting, anticipating what's to come. The tension snaps and we rush into each other's fists. I feel his punch connect with my stomach. Another one hits my bottom jaw. But I also hear him gasp for air as my fist meets his chest. I take a swing at his jaw but he dodges, parries, and my my left shoulder explodes with pain. He uses this to his advantage and takes a jab at my left cheek followed by a hit to my nose. I stagger backwards, disoriented from his attacks.
“Tired already?” He asks with a smirk.
“I'm just getting warmed up.” I reply as I wipe the blood from my lips.
We begin to circle around each other, our eyes locked to each others. His eyes are cold, but I can see the fire behind the ice, waiting to be unleashed.
“You think rage will help you. But it will only destroy you.” He says just as he leaps at me, and knocks me down. He grips my left arm and pushes it down. I feel it begin to burn, as he heats up his hand. As I open my mouth to freeze it, he punches my face, disorienting me.
“You are blinded by rage. I know how it feels, since I've been there, just under different circumstances.”
He lets go of my left arm, and hits me in the face with his burning fist, causing my cheek to blister with blood.
“I grew tired of being Zod's little lapdog. So as we were getting inside our life pods to escape, I tampered with his. His pod exploded upon liftoff.”
“You..you killed Zod?..” I mutter in shock.
“It was easier done than said. And now, now I’ve left that foolish madman. He thought he could control me, tell me what to do. No..I've had enough about being second in command. Now it's time for me to shine. And what better way to do so, than to kill the one person who could stop me in doing so. You.”
He raises his fist, ready to strike once again. I grab onto the floor and tear out a piece of it the size of my hand and swiftly hit him in the side of his head letting him roll over me.
“I thought there were more kryptonians.” I say as I get back up on my feet.
“There are. But none as powerful as you and I.” He gets up and outstretches his right arm in my direction. Seeing it begin to turn redder and blacker I freeze it with my breath. The ice cracks under the heat. I manage to duck right before the fire burns my head. I roll over to the left and fire my heat vision into his right knee, causing him to lose balance. He growls as his other arm turns into flame as well. He lunges at me and I welcome him free handedly as I drive my knee into his gut. He lands on his back with a *thump*. I get on top of him and before he can react I drive my fist into his teeth, shattering them.
“Ghet offv mge” he mumbles as his whole body turns into fire causing me to get off of him and take a few steps backwards.
“Solar I think you should cool off befo…” The explosion sends me to the very edge of the rooftop. It's a miracle that the roof hasn't caved in by now. I wave my hands through the air for the smoke to clear a bit faster. Finally I get a good look at the effects this had on him. His body is completely destroyed, the burnt flesh is falling off of him revealing charred bones beneath. I look into his eyes that now scream madness and try to look for at least a spark of humanity but I can’t find anything. His body twitches, and his breathing is fast and heavy. I wonder if this is somehow my fault. Suddenly his body bursts into flame once again, furthermore hurting him.
“Solar you need to stop this, look at what it's done to you.” I try pleading with him, and he responds by shrieking in a unnatural voice.
“I...I'm going to tear you apart.” Unlike the rest of him, his voice is cold and menacing. He swings towards my head, I dodge and parry with the same move except mine connects. As my fist meets his face, his skin burns my own. I breathe in the hot air, and exhale cold air into his direction, diminishing his powers. I take a jab at his lower jaw, and another one at his neck. He growls, and counters with a kick to my left leg. He takes a swing with his fist, but I catch it in the air with my hand. I crush it, and break it. He yells out in pain, and rams me down into the floor. The roof finally gives in and we fall into the fiery inferno down below.

Images flash in my mind. Her. Them. The ones I left behind. Am I a coward? Was I wrong to save myself? I see their hands outstretched to me. They want me to join them. But I can’t. Not now. Never. I look away from the light and back into the dark.

I found this little book in a shop today and I simply had to buy it... I LOVE it!

Oh and... hello October! my favourite month is here! It's going to be a month full of my favourite things, ending with my husband and I celebrating our wedding anniversary with a holiday! We are going to stay in a beautiful cottage in the middle of nowhere for a week, ending with firework night! ♥

Galah
Scientific Name:Eolophus roseicapillus
Description: The Galah can be easily identified by its rose-pink head, neck and underparts, with paler pink crown, and grey back, wings and undertail. Birds from the west of Australia have comparatively paler plumage. Galahs have a bouncing acrobatic flight, but spend much of the day sheltering from heat in the foliage of trees and shrubs. Huge noisy flocks of birds congregate and roost together at night.
Similar species: The Galah is generally unmistakable, but in flight may resemble aGang-gang Cockatoo in shape.
Distribution: The Galah is one of the most abundant and familiar of the Australian parrots, occurring over most of Australia, including some offshore islands.
Habitat: The Galah is found in large flocks in a variety of timbered habitats, usually near water.
Feeding: Galahs form huge, noisy flocks which feed on seeds, mostly from the ground. Seeds of grasses and cultivated crops are eaten, making these birds agricultural pests in some areas. Birds may travel large distances in search of favourable feeding grounds.
Breeding: Galahs form permanent pair bonds, although a bird will take a new partner if the other one dies. The nest is a tree hollow or similar location, lined with leaves. Both sexes incubate the eggs and care for the young. There is high chick mortality in Galahs, with up to 50 % of chicks dying in the first six months. Galahs have been recorded breeding with other members of the cockatoo family, both in the wild and captivity. These include the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, C. galerita.
Calls: The voice is a distinctive high-pitched screech, 'chi-chi'.
Minimum Size: 35cm
Maximum Size: 36cm
Average size: 36cm
Average weight: 337g
Breeding season: February to July in the north; July to December in the south
Clutch Size: 3 to 4
