We were lucky to receive a gift from Mother Nature. It has warmed up quite nicely so we've decided to drag our boys to Elk Island with us. It has been quite some time since they have visited (we've taken them so often before, that for a while they just didn't want to hear about coming here..). And as a bonus we have gotten an opportunity to shoot some lovely sunset colored sky.. What fun! ;D

Sorry for sparse comments -- I'm away, in a bed & breakfast up on a mountain that doesn't have wi-fi. Back home tomorrow evening. Can't wait to tell you all about this B&B -- it is also an observatory, and I got to operate the telescope and take some photos of celestial bodies!! Being a theme B&B, they have star-shaped cushions. What better for a prop for today's We're Here! theme!!

Sorry, I have not been commenting over the Holiday and last couple weeks. I feel like I've been out on a limb being so busy with hosting family and other chores.
I will try and catch up on commenting the best I can and should be back on until Christmas holidays!
I took a picture of the road in the morning next to the resting position. I had just left the Mo I Rana.
it is not long shutter timing...
Trying to catch up my delay ... (which is still very big) ... but I need to post a new photo from time to time ...

France. Vosges. Alsace. Bas-Rhin. Cet étang est situé au Col de Steige (534m), qui relie la Vallée de la Bruche et le Val de Villé. Photo prise en improvisant de faire le tour de l'étang.
La photo a été prise depuis la rive ouest de l'étang.
En ce samedi 17 décembre 2022, il y avait encore beaucoup de neige à basse altitude en Alsace, une mer de nuages pas trop épaisse sur la plaine d'Alsace et au-dessus du grand soleil dans un ciel peu nuageux. Ce cocktail est tellement rare, surtout un samedi, que j'ai eu envie d'en profiter au maximum, en allant faire des mini-randonnées à plusieurs endroits différents. Je me suis fixé 2 objectifs principaux. Le 1er à la Cascade de l'Andlau près du Hohwald et le 2nd au Donon. Et pour relier ces 2 endroits, j'avais prévu de passer par le Col du Kreuzweg, Breitenbach, le Val de Villé, le Col de Steige, Ranrupt et la Vallée de la Bruche. Tout au long de cet itinétaire de liaison, je m'autorisais à faire une halte à tout endroit que je trouverais très beau.
Et c'est ce qui s'est passé au Col de Steige. Pourtant, j'y étais déjà passé à d'autres moments de l'année et je n'avais pas estimé que ça valait le coup de s'y arrêter, mais ce n'était pas en conditions hivernales. Il faut dire, que cet étang est particulièrement défiguré par les cicatrices de la civilisation humaine, avec :
- Une grosse et vilaine ligne à haute tension sur sa rive OUEST
- La route D424 sur sa rive EST
- La route D50 sur sa rive SUD
Et avec 2 ronds-points entre les 2 routes. Sa seule rive préservée est la rive NORD mais elle est toute petite ...
Mais ce jour-là, avec la neige et l'étang gelé, le cadre était magique alors je me suis laissé tenter pour en faire le tour (que j'ai bouclé en 30 minutes en prenant tout mon temps). Et je ne l'ai pas regretté, d'autant que je n'y ai croisé que 3 personnes. Sans doute parce qu'il faisait froid (malgré le soleil) et que c'était samedi, où les gens vont beaucoup dans les magasins (surtout si près de Noël).
Sur ce cliché, on peut voir au centre ce petit îlot caractéristique, qui lui apporte une touche bien sympathique, avec sa 10aine d'arbres feuillus et résineux. Pour ce qui est des cicatrices de la civilisation, elles ne sont pas trop visibles sur ce cliché car :
- La ligne à haute tension était dans mon dos,
- Il n'y avait aucune voiture sur les 2 routes au moment de la prise,
- Le Col de Steige et les 2 ronds-points sont cachés derrière l'îlot,
- Les quelques panneaux de signalisation routière ne se voient presque pas grâce aux branches devant ou à la distance.

Mammoet heeft drie PTC 210-DS hijskranen. In 2011 zijn ze opgeleverd en af fabriek direct aan het werk gegaan. Ook al is de PTC 210-DS een Hollands product, de kranen zijn nooit in Nederland geweest. De afgelopen 12 jaar hebben de hijskranen over de hele wereld gewerkt. Nu is voor het eerst één van deze kranen in Nederland en aan het werk op de thuisbasis van Mammoet in Schiedam. Aan weerszijden van de kade liggen twee Deense schepen, die gebruikt worden bij de bouw van windmolens op zee. Door het steeds groter worden van windmolens hebben de schepen ook een grotere kraan nodig. Het is wel handig dat er aan twee schepen tegelijk gewekt kan worden.
Een paar cijfers:
Gebouwd op een ring met een diameter van 56 meter.
De kraan kan binnen een kwartier om zijn as draaien.
Maximaal hijsvermogen 3200 ton. (3,2 miljoen kilo)
Maximale hoogte 246 meter.

Mammoet bouwt op dit moment aan een nog grotere kraan met een hijsvermogen van 6000 ton.
Eén van de Deense schepen ligt prominent in het zicht aan de kade bij Mammoet.

El puente de la Salve (antiguamente, puente del General Mola) une Artxanda con el centro de Bilbao y se ha convertido en el guardián del Guggenheim. Desde 2007 destaca el añadido que le ha puesto el artista francés Daniel Buren en forma de puerta roja y que teóricamente comunica a la ciudad con el Universo. Se buscaba transformar el puente en monumento aprovechando el décimo aniversario del Guggenheim. El recubrimiento rojo oculta los cables y parte de la estructura del puente de La Salve. Además, las luces nocturnas realzan mucho el arco. El nombre "La Salve" proviene del saludo religioso, ya que éste era el primer punto en el que los marinos podían ver la Basílica de Begoña al remontar el Nervión.

The name "Salve" comes from the religious greeting, as this was the first point at which the sailors could see the Basilica of Begoña to trace the Nervión.

Splendid Fairy-wren
Scientific Name: Malurus splendens
Description: The breeding plumage of the male is predominantly blue, varying from cobalt-blue in the east of its range to violet-blue in the west.It has black bands at the base of the tail (absent in the violet-blue birds), across the breast and from the beak, through the eyes to join a band across the back of its neck. Its crown and cheek patches are paler blue. Wings and long tail are brown with a blue wash. His beak is black and his legs and feet are brown-grey. In non-breeding plumage, called eclipse, he is very similar to the female, being pale brown above and buff to white underneath although he retains the blue wash on wings and tail. The female does not have the blue wash on her wings, but does have a reddish-tan line from beak to eye that extends into a ring around her eye. Her beak is reddish-tan.
Similar species: The male in breeding plumage is quite distinct but in eclipse he is similar to the males of other fairy-wrens in eclipse. A faint wash of blue on male wings during eclipse distinguishes this species from others. The female is similar to females of other fairy-wren species, but has a bluer tail than most.
Distribution: These birds are widely distributed across Australia in two areas. One area is from about Shark Bay south through WA, through SA except the coast to about the Flinders Ranges and the southern and central parts of NT. The eastern area include SA from the Flinders Ranges, the far north-western tip of Vic, NSW east to about Moree and Balranald and south central Qld.
Habitat: These birds live in arid to semi-arid areas, in mostly dense shrublands or woodlands of acacia, and mallee eucalypt with dense shrubs.
Seasonal movements: These birds are mostly sedentary, defending a territory all year, but the younger females may disperse to another territory. In some areas they are semi-nomadic, depending on local conditions.
Feeding: Like most of the fairy-wrens, Splendid Fairy-wrens eat mostly insects and forage on both the ground and in shrubs. They live in groups which forage together.
Breeding: The Splendid Fairy-wren female builds an oval domed nest of dry grass, strips of bark and rootlets, with an entrance two thirds of the way up one side. The female is the only member of the group to incubate the eggs, but all members of the group feed the chicks.
Calls: A rapid series of slightly metallic, high-pitched pips that blend into an "undulating" call.
Minimum Size: 12cm
Maximum Size: 14cm
Average size: 13cm
Average weight: 9g
Breeding season: mostly September-December, but can extend from August to April
Clutch Size: 2 to 4, mostly 3
Incubation: 15 days
Nestling Period: 11 days
