Our new home in West Virginia has given us an opportunity to observe native birds from a treetop level. These 2 Mourning Doves were huddled against a recent bitterly cold morning. The shot was taken with my S23 Ultra at approximatley 50 feet.
Driving from Derwent water to Buttermere,i had to stop the car and take a walk along the banks of the Derwent river. There had been a very hard frost the night before and everything was covered by its whiteness.
The calmness of the river and the lack of any breeze made it a very tranquil setting. The rising sun illuminated Castle crag on the other side of the river and with everything reflecting perfectly in the water,it was once again time for to get the tripod set up :)

It's a cold, dreary February day, as C&NW GP15 #4411 approaches the BN crossing near Shabbona, IL. The conductor is climbing down off the locomotive, preparing to call the BN dispatcher and get the signal to cross the main line. This is the C&NW's Troy Grove job. Back then, 3 to 4 cars long. Now, I guess 50 or more cars. The main commodity hauled off of this line is silica sand. The CNW unit became UPY 542, was returned to the lessor and is now roaming around as LLPX 1514.

A thick fog was over Oslo yesterday, but no wind and the sea is still open, It was not cold nor too hot...a special and eerie day ;)
The visibility was about 100m. only, we paddled next to land, naturally.

I’ve already told you that I have some old film in our fridge (see here), but what I didn’t tell you is that some of those rolls have pictures in them. Grown at the digital age I never clicked with an analog film, but there is one thing I’ve always liked about it – its physicality and worldly character. Image forms into a film with the aid of emulsion which contains light-sensitive chemicals. As such it is trace of physical reality and light that once run through the emulsion. Film rolls that are situated in our fridge contain these kind of traces from at least ten years back when me and Sari where younger and the life we now live didn’t yet exist. I didn’t develop these films because I wanted to preserve the images they contain for some unknown day in future, when we would develop them and find our past again. I think this kind of ‘time-capsule scenario’ represents perfectly the worldly character of the film. Film is a living artifact of our past same way as ceramic pottery or other everyday stuff is for example. I understand that hard disks are very much physical objects too, but I don’t experience same with them and their digitally coded files. A 30 megabytes jpg-representation of Mona Lisa doesn’t substitute the real thing (and yes, I’m aware of philosophical way around this assumption, but it doesn’t satisfy me). And one could easily picture software that would create same kind of situation with help of cryptography, but it doesn’t have same feeling. Digital photography forms a different experience and while I like it better because of many reasons, I still have this persistent feeling of nostalgia when I have those rolls in my hand. Being physical and worldly, they provide feelings of comfort which virtual and untouchable files can never do (though the next best thing is to print your pictures to real paper).

The Sangre de Cristo Mountains keep watch over Cold Creek Canyon in Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve.
Much of this scene is outside the national park proper but inside the national preserve. The preserve designation allows some additional activities like a Jeep trail and hunting in season.

It's been many years since I've spent autumn in California, so naturally I've been traipsing through the mountains and enjoying the changing colors. I've heard raving comments about the color out in the Eastern Sierra this year, but alas I haven't made the long drive out that direction. Here is some aspen color (and perhaps some cottonwood too?) closer to home along Cold Stream in the Truckee area.
There were some Jeffrey pines nearby which smelled like vanilla!
