Cold Harbour Bridge over the Herefordshire & Gloucestershire Canal near Newent.
The canal was last used in 1881, after which the route was converted into a railway by the GWR. In order to avoid the expense of enlarging the Oxenhall Tunnel for railway use an alternative alignment was used for this section of the line, hence the tunnel and a short stretch of canal on either side survives.
25th March 2006
St Stephen, Cold Norton, Essex
Open. The doors were latched back open. On the map it appears in the ground of the Hall, but the hall is out of sight and it just has a few cottages for company, very pretty. The land drops away dramatically down towards the Crouch, and I could see all of North Fambridge and the river below.
The church was rebuilt in the 1860s out of greenstone, a harsh material more familiar in Kent, although I have visited a couple of Essex churches made out of it, including Goldhanger. An expected 19th century interior of course, but the corbels holding up the roof are very fine, Epsteinesque figures of the apostles with their symbols.
A pleasant place to stop. I ate my sandwiches overlooking the view below, and then headed on to Latchingdon.
Cold air was spewing from a hole in the ground. The air temperature near the cave was around 65 degrees - the ambient was in the mid 90's. As I rode the trail about 75 feet away my legs felt the cold prompting me to explore.
The cold air comes from the entrance to an abandoned dolestone mine in Joppenbergh Mountain.
Large quantities of 55 degree air spew from this hole cooling the nearby area.
Much of my water had turned to ice. I had to use my ice axe to open the water bottle, or bang the cap on a rock. This was even colder than my Rainier climb.

Cold, cold water surrounds me now
And all I've got is your hand
Lord, can you hear me now?
Lord, can you hear me now?
Lord, can you hear me now?
Or am I lost?
Love one's daughter
Allow me that
And I can't let go of your hand
Lord, can you hear me now?
Lord, can you hear me now?
Lord, can you hear me now?
Or am I lost?
[chanting] Cold, cold water surrounds me now
And all I've got is your hand
Lord, can you hear me now?
Lord, can you hear me now?
Lord, can you hear me now?
Or am I lost?
