If you ever wondered what it takes to keep the rear of your camera from frosting over in zero temperatures?

This is the back of my hand with gloves on covered with frost from my breath, the trick here is to breath out of the side of your mouth and allow the gloves to collect the frost. Using either fleece or wool that has a rough surface to help the frost to collect. It is important to clean the frost off when you're done, so the material doesn't become wet. I carry a paint brush to clean of the frost of myself and camera gear.

The frost on the back of my hand took only about 15 to 20 seconds to form. Working in the cold its best to work slow and limit the time the camera is up to your face. This takes practice along with working with gloves on. Here I have two pair of gloves on one a fleece fingerless and thumbless glove with have covers for your fingers.

The most important layer is the base layer, which is considered the anti contact glove. These can be of any thin warm material to avoid skin contact of any cold objects, in this case wool.

Face masks do work in the cold but with one fall back, they frost over, and the frost will stick to the camera.

If you're venturing out in the cold this winter and are not familiar with working in the cold start out with short trip and find out what works best for you. If your plans include stepping out into less traveled areas it's best to find some to join you and or leave your plans with a friend. When things go wrong in the cold things get dynamic real fast and usually end with less than favorable results.

Be careful and get out and enjoy what winter has to offer and create some great images.

circa 1989. My brother, Bob, and I played a set while the real band (The Ackerman Orchestra) were taking a break at my cousin's wedding in Saskatoon Saskatchwan.

Our band was called Cold Fusion. We named it that because we saw a news report about the Fleischmann–Pons Cold Fusion "discovery" just before we left.

The Peavey guitar amp is mine and the red guitar pick behind the logo plate is from Loverboy's guitarist, Paul Dean.

Waking up to 35 degree weather isn't always my idea of fun and excitement. In fact, there's nothing more I can't stand then to be forced out of bed into the cold at 6:30 in the morning for a class I despise:).

Who doesn't agree that nothing is more comforting than the feeling of warm sheets on a cold night or cold sheets on a warm night? Come on now.

Wind blowing, going right though you as you are shooting. Truck was nice and warm.

Good Morning?! You've got to be f**king kidding me?! There is nothing good about this! In fact, as I sit here writing this at 11:41am, it has only warmed up to 12 degrees!

The weatherman said snow flurries and cold for the new year. We've gotten 2 inches and the wind chill is 3 degrees. I don't know how the birds do it...

It's been really cold where I live, so I got Dory's scarf out for her to wear. :)

The track meet was a little cold(in the 30's)The red in her eyes is a reflection from the track. Hdr with Topaz Adjust 4 and color thru Color Select Studio.

You have a way of coming easily to me

And when you take, you take the very best of me

So I start a fight cause I need to feel something

And you do what you want cause I'm not what you wanted

Oh what a shame, what a rainy ending given to a perfect day

Just walk away, no use defending words that you will never say

And now that I'm sitting here thinking it through

I've never been anywhere cold as you

You put up walls and paint them all a shade of gray

And I stood there loving you and wished them all away

And you come away with a great little story

Of a mess of a dreamer with the nerve to adore you

This is another image from the Doug Gordon Work Shop taken a last week, a few steps away from where this image was taken:

Shanon an employee of PatKen Photographer was a real standout as she walked around on the pier in her sleeveless tiny strapped Wedding Gown with a slight breeze off the water and 45 degree weather.

This is a signature DG shot from his website, after I took the shots of the set up I fired this and two others just to mess around.

Again, the bottom line for this workshop for me was NOT to build a portfolio of someone else's poses and styling - it was to see how the magic is created. This session in NYC was more towards the "Glamour and Fashion" of bride and groom portraits and its really incredible to see how the shots are setup.

Finally - this was also an excuse to try out some new branding and logo stuff I've had being worked on the last few weeks. I won't say its ground breaking or super original - but its mine - and thats that.

This is a residential garage without a door. Homeless people take shelter inside on colder nights.

I've peeked in here periodically over the winter, and absolutely nothing changes except the position of the snow shovel, paint can, blanket, or who and how many might be sleeping.
