Awoke the other morning to find the first snow of the season had fallen in the pre-dawn hours. A couple of heavy, wet inches covered the landscape. There's always a feeling of magic seeing snow again for the first time in several months. It doesn't last very long, but it is real at least for a short time. The temperatures ever since have been on the cool side, so some of the snow and ice remain. I wandered about the village cemetery yesterday with the camera to explore this strange world created by the early snow. Autumn leaves are still everywhere, juxtaposed against green grass and now snow and ice. It's like seeing three different seasons all balled into one. The bright midday sun sets up extreme temperature gradients as I found here. This small figurine seemed trapped in-between a mini ice age and an inferno. A microcosm of climate caused by a trick of light and shadow.

Two dog night during the polar vortex. It's extremely rare that these two sleep together...they usually each claim their own separate sofa, but when the temp outside is -31 degrees, it's time to do some cuddling!
Mrs. Flibble has just found out that she's to appear on Ready Steady Cook next week. For those who might not know of this cherished British daytime television programme, each contestant must bring a bag full of ingredients that cost under a fiver, with which the celebrity chef will rustle up something snazzy.
Well, always looking to be different, and having overspent on the eggs, she had to improvise on the cut of meat.
*sigh*
One quick slash of her knife and I was duly refrigerated in readiness.
Oh well.
Destined to be turned into some kind of posh omelette... probably by some smarmy egocentric overpaid excuse of a cook that doesn't realise we all hate him.
*sobs*
I know you'd love to:
I will never tire of the views of the San Luis Valley from my deck. This golden light after a snowfall made for a fine dinnertime view.
... at Terras Bridge near Looe, Cornwall. Despite the warm colours it was bitterly cold with, strangely, frost on the seaweed on the exposed riverbed but nowhere else.
The abandoned dinghy and the boathouse it is in look ever more decrepit with every visit. 😥
Someone asked me to photograph my setup for cold smoking, so here it is. The thing on the right is a snake type pellet burner. It is supposed to be able to burn for 10-12 hours, but I have only needed 2-3 hours for smoking cheese. Doing a bacon will take all 12. I use Traeger pellets (although any brand will probably do). For me applewood works best for cheese, but you can use any wood type you like. I light the pellets with a kitchen torch (like the ones used to make creme brulee). Mine is fueled by butane.
On the left is a tray topped with a grid type cooling rack and a silicone mesh (both from Amazon in the US). The tray is to hold ice or freezer packs to keep the food cool. Air temperature around the food should be between 50 and 80 F (10 and 27C). If the air is cold enough not to need the ice, you can just lay the mesh directly on the grill grate. The burning pellets will not raise the temp by a huge amount, but it will be warmer under the lid.
You can use a smoker or a grill to do this. This is a Texas style offset smoker, but a gas grill or Weber type charcoal grill will work fine as well. You just need enough room for the pellets and the target food, and a lid that allows smoke to flow through. Keep the food and pellets as far apart as you can.
Enjoy!

With snow forecast for tomorrow - it seemed sensible to post a shot of the last time I went in search of snow up on Kinder Scout. I'm thinking of heading over to Swine's Back tomorrow afternoon/evening in the hope of catching the best of the snow in the Peak again... if anyone fancies a trip out, in spite of the forecast wind... do let me know!...

This is a good example to show how cold it was in the mornings...
We got up early to rent snowshoes for some back country hiking. There were only 10 pairs available in total, so we had to get there early enough to grab some...
On the way to the trailhead, we saw a tree out in a snowfield glowing bright white. We slowed down and eventually parked the car. It was a tree covered in ice crystals. It looked absolutely beautiful. I had to get close to take pictures, but on the first step trying to reach it, my foot sunk deep into the snow.
That's where the snowshoes came inn... I have never tried it before, so I was awkwardly strapping those things on to my feet and started wading into the snow. I still sunk in a little bit, but it was much more comfortable.
The tree was amazing. It was radiating light from the early morning sun. I took a couple of pictures from different angles. This one I liked the best, because you can see the snow field sparkling in the background. I really like how the background is out of focus and it almost looks like snowflakes are falling.
All the crystals were gone when we drove past the tree again later in the day. I think they only lasted for a brief moment before the sun melted them away.
