Tuesday Cocktail Hour: Something Like It #cocktailrobot -•- If you are doing a Venn Diagram with circles for “Easy to Make”, “Refreshing”, and “Unexpectedly Delicious” this cocktail would be the overlap of those three. @creativeDrunk from Amor y Amargo did a ‘ask me anything’ on Instagram the other day and this cocktail came up in a discussion of Amaro Meletti. It’s his take on a Rum and Coke - sans Coke. Let me show my work here… -•- 1.5 oz. white rum (eh, kind of lite - used Ten Cane Rum (RIP!)) 1.0 oz. Amaro Meletti Heavy dash of lime bitters -•- Stirred with ice. Added a few ounces of seltzer and then strained into chilled glass with fresh ice. Garnished with a lemon peel because I had one. Easy. Sunday Cocktail Hour: Alpine-y Sour #cocktailrobot -•- I saw a recipe for a Braulio Martinez but I also have a lot of citrus so I wanted to use that. I took the Martinez recipe and added lemon. It was tasty. That said, I may attempt again and do 50/50 on the Braulio and gin as the Braulio got lost in it all. -•- 1.25 oz. Gin 0.75 oz. Braulio 0.75 oz. Lemon Juice 0.76 oz. Honey Syrup -•- Shake with ice. Strain. Lemon peel express + garnish. Oh, here’s a weird thing: I used that Fee Brothers Foam. Maybe 3 dashes. Did a reverse dry-shake and had lots of handsome foam. Strained into glass. Had handsome foam. Took the lemon peel and expressed it and: BAM! No more foam. It just cleared it out and you can see the results. Well we went shopping at Kalustyan's and purchased entirely too many tasty things. And then I made cocktail onions. I was reading Robert Simonson’s ‘3-Ingredient Cocktails’ book and he mentioned how easy they are to make and how much better than store bought. -•- 2.00 oz. I was part of a little online thing tonight and this was the cocktail that was made by @belvederebrian 1.00 oz Belvedere Vodka 0.75 oz Lime juice 0.75 oz simple syrup or honey syrup 4-5 mint leaves 4 cucumber slices Place all ingredients in a shaker and shake with ice. Duly noted.
This evening Lovely Wife requested a cocktail before dinner so I had to oblige! The last time I made this cocktail (according to my notes) was 2017. For real? It’s straight up delicious.
According to Martin’s Index, this first appeared in 1937 in the Cafe Royal Cocktail Book. Page 52.

1.50 oz. Cognac (used Hennessy VSOP)
.75 oz. lemon juice
.50 oz. green chartreuse
.25 oz. simple syrup
1 dash of Angostura

Thursday Cocktail Hour: The Mai Tai #cocktailrobot -•- I had a new bottle of rum. I wanted a Mai Tai. I had a lime shortage issue and remembered I had made lime cordial over the weekend. The standard recipe is below. Using lime cordial means you kind of knock out the simple syrup and lime in one swoop. 2 oz. Rum (Maggie’s Farm "50/50" Dark Rum) 0.50 oz. Curaçao 0.75 oz. Lime juice 0.33-ish oz. Orgeat 0.25 oz. Simple Syrup Shake with ice. Strain. I bet a garnish would be swell. I was in Pennsylvania this past week and picked up a locally (Pittsburgh) made rum. Maggie’s Farm "50/50" Dark Rum. Blend of their column rum with rum from the Caribbean that is molasses-based. The Corpse Reviver cocktail is our Spooky Season drink of choice. The drinks were originally made to help ‘revive’ people. This particular version is said to be so strong as to revive a dead person.
There are different variations. Last year ( #MySpookyDayCocktails ) we did a Mezcal version of what is known as the Corpse Reviver no. 2 and this year we did the Cognac + Apple Brandy based no. 1.
1.50 oz. Cognac (Hennessy Pure White!)
0.75 oz. Apple Brandy (Lairds)
0.75 oz. Vermouth (Cochi Torino))
Dash of Orange Bitters
Stir with ice. Strain. Orange peel express and garnish.
Spooky.

While in Barbados earlier this year we bumped into a lot of Clayton’s Tonic.
Their website tells the story…
“Claytons is an exotic, Caribbean made tonic, originally created by the Clayton brothers in Battersea, London England circa 1880. Now made in Barbados and distributed around the world, Claytons has retained its mystical allure for well over 100 years. Claytons Kola Tonic contains the Kola Nut of West Africa, long known as a mild stimulant and widely claimed to revive the body from a variety of ailments. This 0% Alcohol tonic is a refreshing, invigorating drink that can be enjoyed in a variety of combinations or by itself.”
It is an interesting tasting tonic. I’m struggling to describe it.
There is an “invigorating” quality on the palate. I really haven’t wrapped my head around the taste profile.
This is a variation of a Corn & Oil with a small amount of Clayton’s. Not sure it brings a ton to the table. I will play with it again (apparently it works well with cognac).
45ml Rum (Doorly’s 14!)
15ml Claytons Kola Tonic
10ml Falernum
20ml Lime Juice
Metric! Sorry not sorry.
Shake! Strain!
(I thought Clayton’s might be carbonated - it’s not)

In a box where I saved some special bottles, I came across this jewel that had been sitting there for maybe 10 years and needed to be opened: Germain-Robin Apple Brandy XO. Oh my.
Germain-Robin, now owned by Gallo, are based in California and make some interesting/awesome/tasty American brandy. The Apple Brandy is no exception. It spends 10 years in oak and has a depth and complexity that I’ve never tasted in an Apple Brandy.
Let’s make an Old Fashioned on this dark and stormy night.
2.00 oz. Apple Brandy
0.25 oz. Cinnamon Simple Syrup
2 dashes of Fig & Poppy Bitters
2 dashes of Angostura
Stir with ice. Make little dip in ice for a cherry to rest.

I also served on a cube instead of up. It was a hot apartment day.
Orange peel flamed would be ideal.

0.50 oz Simple Syrup
0.25 oz Grenadine
5 dashes Absinthe
1 dash Angostura
2 Drops Saline
Shake with ice! Strain onto handsome ice.
I enjoyed this one as well. The absinthe (man, I do love absinthe) and the grenadine play really well together. The absinthe notes remind me of the Alpine Sour I love to make which is a bourbon + Braulio split whiskey sour.
