A cliff of ignimbrite rises near Ponta do Mistério on the Island of Terceira in the Azores. Ignimbrites are deposited by very hot clouds of ash; pumice, lithic blocks/fragment and gases. Called pyroclastic flows by geologists, these flows are dense and because of their density, hug the ground at high speeds. The volcanic cone rising behind the cliff in the fog is part of the volcanic complex associated with the Pico Alto volcano.

Standley Chasm, a narrow gorge in the West MacDonnell Ranges, located 50 km west of Alice Springs, Australia.

When I arrived there, the sun unfortunately disappeared behind the clouds, but the red colour of the cliffs was still very impressive.

Huangyaguan (Yellow Cliff Pass) lies on a steep and abrupt mountain ridge, and got its name from the yellowish hills and rocks nearby. To the east there are cliffs, and to the west crags. The Great Wall at Huangyaguan encapsulates the essence of the Great Wall, with outstanding architectural variety and some of the unique features of the Wall.

With various forms of watch towers along the walls, the largest tower on the Great Wall, Phoenix Tower, and the most unique castle, Bagua (‘Eight Trigrams’) Castle, Huangyaguan Great Wall is considered to be a miniature representation of the whole Great Wall with the greatest variety contained within one section.

I enjoy seeing young birds that look distinctly different from the adults of the species. That may be partly because often it is a plumage held for such a brief time. For identification purposes, it's too bad that you can't really see the typical Cliff Swallow pale rusty rump patch from this angle (there's a hint of it back there just above the rope and wing). And at this angle you can't see the flecks of whitish feathers in the forehead, where the adult has a pale patch.

Rocky shore off west cliff in Santa Cruz, CA. Nice sunset/sun star with nice sized waves breaking with the birds hanging on the rock. Pleasant evening :)

I saw that there was going to be some sun at Mosier today, so I thought it would be a good time to test out the new IR camera. By the time I got there, though, the clouds had declared victory. I took a picture anyway. It’s not bad.

Focusing with an IR camera is not a simple thing. I remember from many years of using IR film, that many vintage lenses have an infrared mark that shows you exactly where to set the focus. Modern auto-focus lenses… not so much. I though that I could just stop down to F16 like I have done with film, but the image here is still a little fuzzy. I will have to experiment further. Some sunshine would help.

The Cliffs of Sangstrup and Karlby are up to 17 meters tall and stretches 5 km along the coast of Djursland. The limestone originates from a 65-million-year-old coral reef in a prehistoric and tropical sea.

See all the footprints where some enterprising people have go to this hidden beach? See the huge great lump of cliff that has fallen on the footprints?

Ooh-er!

This is Marinha, near Benagil, Portugal - the main beach is safe enough, this is a sub-beach only reachable via a scary path down the cliffs.

I got up at 5AM for this one, and the sun is rising behind the camera...
