Reformed Great Church of Debrecen year ~ 1930
The Reformed Great Church or Great Reformed Church in Debrecen (Hungarian: Nagytemplom) is located in the city of Debrecen. It stands in the city centre, between Kossuth square and Calvin square. It is the symbol of the Protestant Church in Hungary, and it is because of this church that Debrecen is sometimes referred to as "the Calvinist Rome". With a ground space of 1500 m² it is the largest Protestant church in Hungary. It also has the largest bell of all Hungarian Protestant churches. The Great Church was built between 1805 and 1824 in neoclassical style.
History

A church already stood here in the Middle Ages, but it burnt down. St. Andrew Church, a Gothic hall church was built in its place between 1297 and 1311. Its area was about 16x46 meters. This church burnt down in 1564. In 1626 the already Protestant citizens of Debrecen started to build the St. Andrew Church again. With the support of George I Rákóczi construction was finished in 1628. In 1640-1642 a tower was constructed and a large bell – about 300 kg, made of Austrian cannonballs – was placed in it. In 1707, during the freedom fight led by Francis II Rákóczi the church suffered heavy damages from the imperial troops. The church burnt down on June 11, 1802, during the great fire which destroyed most of Debrecen.
The construction of the Great Church began on April 8, 1805. It was designed by Mihály Péchy, but the plans were altered several times during the construction, causing much frustration to the builders. The original plan featured a church with a cross-shaped ground plan and a large dome, but the plan was discarded, mainly due to financial reasons.
The western tower was finished by 1818, the eastern tower on August 6, 1821. The towers are 61 meters high. Originally a dome was planned to crown the building, this was not built, but when the construction was finished, the facade seemed unattractive with the large empty space between the towers, so in 1823/24 the facade was slightly modified, using the plans of Károly Rábl. The tower roofs feature Baroque elements. A nice panorama can be seen from the left (western) tower. The old Rákóczi bell, restored after the fire, is in this tower too.
Architecture
The organ
The main nave of the church is 55 m long and nearly 15 m wide, the transept is 38 m long and more than 14 m wide. Similar to other Protestant churches, the inside walls are painted white. The interior is 21 meters high. The church accommodates about 5000 people (with 3000 seats).
The Great Church also has historical significance: during the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 Lajos Kossuth made the Hungarian Declaration of Independence here on April 14, 1848, and was elected governor of the country here. The armchair in which he sat can be viewed in the church.
The church has two organs, one of them is in the southern part, above the main entrance. This is a new, electronic organ with resonance pipes, three manuals and 52 registers, built by Péter Albert in 1981. The older, Classical organ is behind the pulpit. It was built in 1838 by Jakob Deutschmann. It is a cabinet organ with 3 manuals and 43 registers.

Jamestown.
John Bristow Hughes took out the first pastoral lease in this area in 1841. The country is high, with good and reliable rainfall and ideal for pastoralism. He named his property Bundaleer. This was later held by Charles B Fisher. The other early pastoral run near the township was Old Canowie established by Daniel Cudmore. The hundred was surveyed in 1870-71 and the land opened up to small farmers. The town itself was surveyed in 1871 and named after the Governor of South Australia, Sir James Fergusson. The Scottish influence is still present in Jamestown with many Scottish street names. The Main Street is called Ayr Street and is especially wide for a country town. The District Council was formed a few years later in 1875. Within a few years the town was well established and was one of the largest towns in the mid north in the 1882 census after Port Augusta and Port Pirie. In 1882 the town had almost 1,000 people. Jamestown is situated on the banks of Belalie Creek.
The first shop or business in Jamestown was a saddlery which opened in 1872. The butcher’s shop in Jamestown is meant to be the oldest butcher shops in South Australia. Dr Cockburn’s House built in 1876 still stands in the extension of the Main Street. Other old buildings in the Main Street area include the Lutheran Church, built in 1876 for the Presbyterians; St James Catholic Church, built in 1929, the Memorial Hall built as the Institute in 1876 and the Uniting Church built as a Wesleyan church in 1878.
The town was linked quite early (1878) with Port Pirie by rail and later to Peterborough in January 1881. The station building was built in 1885 and is now a museum. A new railway station was built when the rail line was standardised to Broken Hill in 1969. The largest employer of labour in Jamestown's history was Humphris' Emu Butter Factory, which employed over forty people around 1900. Earlier Humphris had purchased the first aerated waters factory in Jamestown in 1878. The firm had 750 suppliers of cream in 1908 and by 1912 it had increased to over 1000.The factory was underground and the more important work, such as churning, was done in the basement even in the hottest weather. 'Emu’ butter was sold in Broken Hill, Adelaide and Great Britain. In 1899 the firm opened a factory in Adelaide in Carrington Street and most of the manufacturing of the sauces and pickles was transferred to this factory from Jamestown. The depression of the 1930s took its toll and in 1932 the Emu Factory closed its doors at Jamestown. Aerated waters were still manufactured in the factory until 1965. The factory was demolished in 1975 to make way for the Homes for the Aged.

Recently I felt in love with Pullips!
My very first one is Classical Alice. It was hard to make a choice at first (tere are so many Pullips) but her make up is so detailed and gorgeous and her stock is great that it became obvious she would be my first :-).
There she is with a first customisation with an obitsu body 27cm, new eyechips and wig ! I love their cuteness and the posability is so great and a lot of fun !

My new photobook is finally complete :)! If you like Cafés, Jazz, antique furniture and Japan this book is for you. Unfortunately the price is quite high since there is hardly an alternative for Blurbs Print-on-Demand service at the moment. I don't get a single Penny from the sales but would be very happy for every sold book, since photography is my passion.
Please check out my Blurb page for more information ;-). I hope this is an inspiration for people to explore Japans very unique retro focused café culture...but maybe just in a few years. Japan is struggling with overtourism at the moment.
