Lucius Annaeus Seneca: On entering a temple we assume all signs of reverence. How much more reverent then should we be before the heavenly bodies, the stars, the very nature of God!
John Muir: All the wild world is beautiful, and it matters but little where we go, to highlands or lowlands, woods or plains, on the sea or land or down among the crystals of waves or high in a balloon in the sky; through all the climates, hot or cold, storms and calms, everywhere and always we are in God's eternal beauty and love. So universally true is this, the spot where we chance to be always seems the best.

I'm currently updating a translation with the Greek names for the gods and goddesses--will publish soon! :)
"RAGE--Sing, O goddess, the anger of Achilles son of Peleus, that brought countless ills upon the Achaeans. Many a brave soul did it send hurrying down to Hades, and many a hero did it yield a prey to dogs and vultures, for so were the counsels of Zeus fulfilled from the day on which the son of Atreus, king of men, and great Achilles, first fell out with one another. The Wolfson galleries in the basement of the British Museum were accessible during the late 1980s and early 1990s and contained a fascinating display of Greek and Roman sculpture and architectural fragments, much of it clearly considered less worthy than the pieces on display in the main galleries upstairs but no less interesting, and including essential supplementary sculptural elements of two of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus and the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus. Also displayed here was the Townley Collection of classical sculpture, a room brimming with somewhat restored Roman white marble sculptures, made all the more fascinating by the cluttered and confined spaces, which seemed as much warehouse as museum!
Most of the galleries seem to have been closed to visitors since the mid 90s (the first room with architectural pieces is still open on rare occaisions). I'm not sure why, it could be something to do with the confined, cluttered spaces not being considered satisfactory as display areas though I suspect it's more likely to be cutbacks (shut rooms don't need to be staffed!). It's a real shame, as these rooms in the bowels of the building were one of my favourite areas.
A few of the better pieces are back on show upstairs in various parts of the mueum but the bulk presumably remains shut away in these cellars, unlikely to be seen by anyone beyond museum staff.
These pre-digital photos are from my last visit to these galleries in the early 1990s.
Mohiniyattam, also spelled Mohiniattam (Malayalam: മോഹിനിയാട്ടം), is a traditional South Indian dance from Kerala, developed by the great Tamil nattuvanar (dance master) Vadivelu, one of the Thanjavur Quartet. It is one of the eight Indian classical dance forms. It is considered a very graceful dance meant to be performed as a solo recital by women. The term Mohiniyattam comes from the words "Mohini" meaning a woman who enchants onlookers and "aattam" meaning graceful and sensuous body movements. The word "Mohiniyattam" literally means "dance of the enchantress".

The Paris Pantheon was a rationalist reaction against the Baroque (or rather, against the Rococo). This Neoclassical structure, was its first great monument, designed by Jacques Germain Soufflot (1713-80) as a Catholic church, Ste-Genevieve, but secularized during the French Revolution.
Its dome is derived from St. Paul's Cathedral in London, indicating England's new importance for continental architects.
Maurice Abravanel, conductor of the Utah Symphony, at a convenience store in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, after a performance (probably at the University of Wisconsin in Stevens Point) earlier in the evening.
This is from when I took a darkroom class in my senior year of college. Written on the back of the print:

Taken while on a bus tour with the Utah Symphony, for which I took off a couple weeks of my last semester at USC's School of Music.
Bombastic Banker's renaissance confection framed in the entrance to Bristol's more restrained Georgian Corn Exchange. The Piranesian framing was an opportunity too good to miss peering from the troglodytic gloom onto a building imbued with the age of enlightenment. Two of Bristols finer buildings.

The Library of Celsus is Ephesus's best known landmark, owing to the remarkable preservation of it's facade which, having collapsed at some point in the Middle Ages was meticulously pieced back together and re-erected in the late 1970s (with a concealed steel frame to protect against further earthquake damage).
Ephesus is justly famed as one of the finest ancient Roman sites anywhere. The ruins of the city are extensive with many impressive monuments to amaze the visitor (that have often been partially reassembled to give an indication of their former glory and context).
Unfortunately the fame and popularity of the site means that, unlike most of the classical sites we visited elsewhere, it is constantly crowded with tourists. However the city has always attracted visitors, and among those who spent time here centuries ago were St Paul and St John (and possibly Mary herself if one believes in the authenticity of her nearby residence).

Ludwig van Beethoven: "Music/poetry/art should strike fire from the heart of man, and bring tears from the eyes of woman."
This was commissioned by the music department when I was on staff at Barnes & Noble's product development department. It was to be used on some gift packaging, but I left soon after this and don't know how or when it was finally used.
I have long loved to draw portraits with Prismacolor pencils, so this was sort of a fun twist on that ... not quite portraits, but more still life. I believe this was the last commercial piece I did in colored pencil. I'd like to do more as it's my favorite media. As with most of my colored pencil pieces, I snuck my name into part of the design. ;-)
Colored pencil on paper.

Marbach am Neckar is a town of about 15,000 inhabitants on the river Neckar in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
Marbach is known as the birth place of the classical poet and dramatist, Friedrich Schiller. Although Schiller moved away as a child, he is commemorated in Marbach by the Schiller-Nationalmuseum und Deutsches Literaturarchiv (Schiller National Museum and German Literature Archive), one of the main archives of literature history in Germany.
The town has a photogenic center with several churches (the older one is from the 16th century), a medieval tower and many older houses, including the house in which Schiller was born.
