Old Custom House 1838
These magnificent columns stand at the entry to one of colonial architect John Lee Archer's finest buildings. Archer (1792-1852) is most famous for coming up with the basic design for the Ross Bridge (1836), which stonemason Daniel Herbert then set about turning into a masterpiece of symbolic design. You can check out my album on "The Story of the Ross Bridge". www.flickr.com/photos/183221334@N02/albums/72157716105920156

I could have titled this "Memories of Max", but that would have been presumptuous. The great Australian photographer of the 20th century Max Dupain (1911-1992), although well known for his iconic Australian landscapes and beach scenes, was a superb architectural photographer. In 1963 he published a book for the National Trust on Georgian architecture in NSW and Tasmania. It is loaded with magnificent monochromes. Here's a link (not to promote the selling site), but to give you an opportunity to scan some of its pages that are displayed here. It's a wonderful collection of historic photographs:

Here's a build I've been waiting to photograph for ages! It's a 'classical' steampunk city diorama, with an open back and full interior. I also lit it up using Lightailing lights!
It can also split into 2 parts, and a section comes off to reveal another hidden interior.
This main shot is a bit like the 18+ ones, with a more natural background, and some steampunky objects.
Pszczyna Castle (Polish: Zamek w Pszczynie), is a classical-style palace in the city of Pszczyna (formerly called "Pless") in south-western Poland. Constructed as a castle in 13th century or earlier, in a Gothic architectural style, it was rebuilt in a Renaissance style in the 17th century. During the course of the 18th and 19th centuries, the exterior of the castle was partially changed into a Baroque-Classical style. The Classicist modernization transformed the complex into what is usually described a palace.
In its history the castle was a residence of Silesian and Polish Piast nobles, then the Promnitz family members (mid-16th to mid-18th centuries) and later the von Pless family. The castle has been state-owned since 1936, after the death of the last Prince of Pless, Hans Heinrich XV. In 1946 it was turned into a museum operating until today.
In 2009 it was voted as one of the "Seven Architectural Wonders of the Silesian Voivodeship" by the Silesian authorities and is often described as one of the most beautiful castle residences in Poland.
In the early the Middle Ages, Pszczyna was a stronghold of the Piast dynasty and several dukes of Poland. The city belonged to the historical region of Lesser Poland until 1177, when it became part of the Duchy of Ratibor. From this time on, it also was part of the Bishopric of Kraków. In 1548, the palace was sold to the noble Promnitz family from Saxony and given a Renaissance appearance, which it lost after a fire. It was subsequently rebuilt in a more baroque style.
In 1705, Baroque composer Georg Philipp Telemann became Kapellmeister to Erdmann II of Promnitz, privy Councillor to Augustus II the Strong, elector of Saxony and king of Poland, and spent considerable time at the Pszczyna Palace when the latter's court summered there. This gave Telemann an opportunity to study Polish and Moravian folk music, which fascinated and inspired him.
In 1742 Pless became part of Brandenburg-Prussia. In 1848 the Duchy of Pless became a Principality, ruled by the Hochberg-Fuerstenstein family until 1939. Between 1870 and 1876, reconstruction of the palace was directed by the French architect Gabriel-Hippolyte Destailleur.
During the First World War, the palace, then in the German-controlled Silesia, at times hosted William II, German Emperor, and there are pictures on display of him together with Generals such as Erich Ludendorff and Paul von Hindenburg discussing military operations. After the war and a plebiscite in 1921, the town became part of Poland. Following the invasion of Poland in September 1939, the complex was occupied by the Wehrmacht.
After the Second World War, Upper Silesia became part of the Polish People's Republic. For a brief period there was a Soviet military hospital in the palace, but in May 1946 it was turned into a museum, which still operates today.
The classical view of Hallstatt. Uploaded to the internet a million times (at least). So I asked myself, how can I possibly add something new? For starters, I came in winter, and (of course) I waited for my favorite light which is at blue hour, just when the city lights turn on. And then there was the ferry. I noticed the little ferry boat already during the day and thought its lights might provide nice trails during blue hour. So I studied the schedule and came back to the right place at the right time ...

Sydney Habour in evening light. I am no the first one and not the last one to make a panorama from Kiribilli side of the habour.
I'm surprised this kind of path or road was built in the 1930s. It's miniscule by DC standards but would probably still be an open road in Philly. Today it's closed by bollards and is wonderful pedestrian path.

A shrine to wabi-sabi, transience & imperfection… former Los Alamos National Laboratory scientist, Johnnie Meier has been collecting road culture artifacts since 1987; in 2002 he retired & created the Museum. There is wabi-sabi beauty in the thoughtful organic arrangement of the road culture artifacts and in the fond remembrance of things that once populated our early memories.
On Highway 68, between Santa Fe & Taos, along a beautiful stretch of the Rio Grande River, the Classical Gas Museum is wonderful. Johnnie is an artistic, kind, & friendly soul. There is no admission fee instead donations for the Dixon Animal Protection Society are encouraged.

Centre: Queen's house, 1616-1635, architect Inigo Jones, the first deliberately classical building in Britain. Built for Anne of Denmark, Queen of James I. Either side are the wings of the Royal Hospital for Seamen, now the Old Royal Naval College, laid out so as to protect the view to the Thames from the Queen's house, by order of Queen Mary II. Built 1696-1751, architect Sir Christopher Wren.
