In June 1987 we had a 2 week holiday in South Devon - and guess who spent most of the time on the sea wall between Teignmouth and Dawlish Warren? This is 47440 leaving Teignmouth on the 16.35 Paignton-Manchester on Monday 29 June 1987.

47440 was originally numbered D1556, built at Crewe in early 1964. It was withdrawn from service in July 1991 and was cut up at OOC (by MRJ Phillips) in April 1997.

Settle to Carlisle Railway. An unidentified Class 47 approaches Armathwaite in April 1982 with a Glasgow Central - Nottingham service. The River Eden is in the valley below and a Midland Railway wooden, square signal post supports an upper quadrant arm. Armathwaite box was already locked out of use with all semaphores in the "off" position and this signal along with all the others around Armathwaite disappeared not very long after this shot was taken.

On 9 May 1987 I travelled on the "Anglia Diesel Farewell" railtour, which featured a non-stop run behind D200 from Norwich to Liverpool Street, and, after arrival at the terminus, I took this photo. Liverpool Street station has certainly changed a lot in the last 34 years, and a shot like this would now be impossible for any number of reasons. What a lot of BRUTES* there were at Liverpool Street in those days!

Unfortunately I neglected to record the number of the Class 47 that has evidently arrived. The Class47list website has 47574 on 15.05 ex-Kings Lynn, and 47577 on the 14.30 from Norwich (577 came on at Ipswich). Could it be one of these?

An unrecorded 47 at the rear of its engineers train through Port Sunlight station connected with the coming activation of third rail electrification on the Chester to Birkenhead line. The down platform was a wooden structure in the sixties and there was no central platform. When the four track line was reduced to two a new platform was built on the up side.

Yesterday I saw that this path from Crewe Heritage Centre - Derby was put in through Kidsgrove at 16:46. After that I saw that there was a path from Derby - Orton Mere on the Nene Valley Railway. So there it was a path for 47712 and 47192 to get to the Nene Valley Gala. There was a path from Wembley - Crewe Heritage Centre which was 31452. I saw that it hadn't arrived at Crewe Heritage Centre and that it wouldn't run. I was right then a path for 31452 to get to Crewe the next day was added from Derby - Crewe Heritage Centre. And then all of the other paths for the 47s were added. It was due at 09:51 through Kidsgrove. So I caught the 09:25 train from Congleton - Kidsgrove. The 31 had arrived at Crewe Heritage Centre at 08:58 so everything was running fine. But I stood there for an hour before I saw that anything had happened! So, here is 31452 hauling 47712 and 47192 past Kidsgrove working 0Z47 the 09:15 Crewe Heritage Centre - Derby, before working the 11:46 to Orton Mere. This move was running 52 minutes late when it passed Kidsgrove at 10:43 1/4/16
