The 1Z66 made a brief stop at Dawlish to drop off passengers returning from their day out to Shrewsbury. This gave me the opportunity for a night shot. This is a time exposure taken with my drone. I anticipated the duff would run off the end of the platform so this was my only option. Time exposures with a drone are a real hit and miss affair. The slightest movement will ruin the shot. The wind was almost non existent on this evening and any breeze was blowing off the land. If the breeze was blowing from the sea then the drone would have been buffeted quite a bit.

The train departed Shrewsbury for Paignton at 1550 in the charge of 47805 with 47810 on the rear.

I had seen a few shots online taken at this location but struggled to replicate the composition. Maybe I could blame the local foliage.

47593 Galloway Princess passes the former Breydon Jn. (a mile or two from Great Yarmouth, where the lines to Reedham and Acle diverge), at the head of the return leg of Locomotive InterCity Ltd.'s "The Norfolk Coast Express", 1Z76 15.29 Great Yarmouth - Manchester Piccadilly. The train reversed at Norwich, so that the class 40 would lead the rest of the way back to Manchester. [Pole, 5/6 sections (~6.8m)]

I wasn't completely sure about the sun angle here, as some photographers suggested it would be too far round, but I thought it would still be just OK; it's about 35 degrees to the track. The bridge at Stracey Arms was not an option, despite the sun angle definitely being better, as there is now a large bush at the side of the track which means you have to shoot much more head-on. (And as I drove past after taking this, I noticed some crossings between Stracey Arms and Acle which would have been very good - including one which looked to be easily accessible and where you could even park close by.) But a few other people thought the same as me, and I think the visible part of the train is lit perfectly well

We knew the train was leaving Great Yarmouth in two ways. Firstly, we could see it move on on-line signalling maps. Secondly, the loco produced so much black exhaust as it went under the bridge across the station throat that we could see it, prompting one of the photographers in the gallery to make the comment that it looked like there was a steam train coming!
