Michael Symon's Sicilian cauliflower recipe. Cauliflower, olive oil, capers, toasted pinenuts, golden raisins, orange and lemon juice and zest, honey, chili flakes, cumin, and shallots.
I do like to record the successes (not the failures!) on the veg patch. This variety is proving to be very productive for me once again.
Cauliflower
Roasted, pickled, grated. (Decoded: 3-way preparation of cauliflower: (1) Creamed cauliflower terrine, (2) pickled cauliflower, and (3) pureed (purple) cauliflower.)
Notes: This was not only one of the prettiest dishes of the evening, it was one of my favorite.
I love all things pickled. The acidity in the pickled colourful florets paired excellently against the soft, creamy, cauliflower terrine (think cauliflower gratin at room temp). There was also a nice, fresh-tasting swatch of cauliflower puree to help make everything adhere together nicely.
This was a simple dish. One that I would enjoy in a (much) larger portion for summer brunch al fresco with some chilled white wine.

Cauliflower with butter, garlic, truffle oil, paprika, red pepper flakes, and thin slices of Bavarian beer cheese on top
Made this recipe from the book Japanese Light by Kimiko Barber - donated by mum on our recent trip home. Cauliflower, broccoli, carrot and silken tofu with a miso sauce, sprinkled with (fake) parmesan and baked in the oven. It was quite nice but things I will need to do next time: drain the tofu better, make more sauce, use real parmesan...
(Yes, I know I'm never going to have a career in food photography but we were hungry!)
This is commonly known as sea cauliflower (Leathesia difformis) or sea potato. It is a brown seaweed. This was in the intertidal zone at Cresswell in Northumberland.
Cauliflower Soup
My mum used to often make cauliflower soup when I was a kid, and I have always loved it. She would thicken it through the roux method of course, but trying to keep it syn free, this is not an option for me. My mum also used to buy a glass jar of baby food containing miniature meatballs which she would add to the soup. I have been known to chop up some chipolatas into it, a very good combination, but today I didn't have any so the soup was naked.
Serves 2
Syn Free on Extra Easy
½ large cauliflower
1 litre water
1 tbsp bouillon powder
2 egg yolks
Cut the cauliflower into florets, and boil in the water with bouillon powder added until very soft. Using a potato masher, squash the cauliflower until roughly mashed. Take off the heat and allow to cool ever so slightly. Give the egg yolks a little whisk with a fork and add to the soup while stirring continuously and vigorously. Serve immediately.
Yes... cauliflower. Cauliflower ice cream with curried apple topped with toasted almonds to be precise. Now, I know what you're thinking but in fact it was surprisingly tasty. I liked it. I really liked it.
We were having a celebratory meal for my nephew's graduation in a a very nice restaurant called the Wild Bergamot. It was the sort of place that spends as much time making the food look pretty on the plate as they do cooking it. Normally, I get miffed about that sort of thing - usually I'm a quantity over quantity person. However, this meal was fantastic. I enjoyed every course. It was fantastic.
I've posted a picture of the menu, the kitchen and one of my other courses too.
