Dendrites | Soap Bubble Freezing

Today’s subzero temperature (-10°C), calm wind and bright blue clear skies amounted to an irresistible invitation to photograph freezing soap bubbles. Herewith are a series of still images along with a relevant short video I produced 6 years ago showing the growth of dendrites in soap bubbles.

The bubbles in my mounting medium were observed on an Olympus BX51 microscope equipped with a darkfield condenser. The condenser was defocussed to produce the various colours seen in the bubbles.

The image was taken with an Olympus DP71 digital microscopy camera and processed in Adobe Photoshop CS6.

My son and I were playing with the bubbles. I was having a hard time getting any in focus. We'll be trying again as soon as the clouds clear.

We've been wanting to try some bubble teas from the new shop in town for a while now... finally got some today because A) it was nice and B) I had a coupon (hehe). So Una and I sat out on the Green and did homework and tried to make sense of those silly black squishy things coming up our straws. It would have been a really cool thing if they actually tasted good, or like anything at all... but they didn't. So we drank around them (hey, the tea was still good) and, well, needed to find something to do with the leftover "attack balls." I think our net enjoyment of the teas exceeded anyone's expectations (or intentions)...

I had so many cute images that I wanted to post. Soooo, I decided that a collage of his bubble bath was my best choice :) I think this pretty much should cover it!!

It is finally winter and I can try to make Frozen Bubbles, or so I thought. Apparently it isn't cold enough here in Australia where we only get down to -10c at night. Ah well it was fun all the same :-)
