I had this Ibis giving me the eyeball as I was out hiking at Brazos Bend State Park, Texas. I love the brown, blurred backdrop that is highlighting its color.
This was last June when the park was drying out. As the water went away, the wading birds had a feeding frenzy on the newly exposed creatures. In a few weeks, the area would be dry and offer little to eat. Thankfully, we are now getting some rain. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas - 6/2022
It was nice to get back into Brazos Bend State Park, which had been closed since Hurricane Harvey flooded it back in August. The seasons have changed since my last visit, and the fall/winter birds are arriving. 11/2017
Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas, 6/2017. Hurricane Harvey's flooding damage will keep the Park closed until at least early November.
This morning I arrived at the park well before sunrise, and was privileged to see and hear the start of a beautiful day. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas. 1/2020
How cattle egrets lived before there were cattle:) I like that both the deer and egret are looking back and have the same pose.

A Great Horned Owl camouflaged, yet standing out with its fierce looking eyes!! I love the greenery around the brown of the owl.
Winter skies can be amazing, even in a place that doesn't have a real winter (like SE Texas). 12/2019 at Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas.
My wife hung back to avoid flushing the heron I was watching, then this big fellow crossed the trail between us. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas. 8/2018 (her phone pic in comment 1)
FYI this is a pretty common occurrence at this location. The gator simply wanted to get to the area across the trail. I have received a few messages about risky behavior. This was not the case.
Brazos Bend State Park has a spillway that runs like a river after a large rainfall. We had a pretty big rain last week. The water was running and lots of birds were feeding in it. I set up early Sunday morning and watched/shot for 4 hours. Great time!

Behold the mighty anhinga. He's sort of like a cormorant, but more colorful. He can swim submerged underwater with only his neck and head showing above, which is how he got the nickname Snake Bird.
I very gradually got closer and closer to be able to take this picture, but unfortunately he started getting agitated. His posture in the picture is a threat to back off. He flew away a little later.
The areas beyond the water way on either side of Spillway Trail at Brazos Bend State Park is ablaze with beautiful yellow wildflowers. I believe these wildflowers to be Cut Leaf Groundsel. If incorrect, please let me know! Also, I would like the correct identification of these trees.

Two years ago, I purchased a small Olympus mirrorless camera (B&H Black Friday). Combined with a small ball head, this has allowed me to capture wider shots while in the field with a telephoto on my dSLR (I've always been uncomfortable changing lenses along the trail).
